Hunting Heritage Trust Partners In Recognition of Guns & Ammo 50th Anniversary
Firearm News ,Hunting Heritage Trust Partners In Recognition of Guns & Ammo 50th Anniversary
Hunting Heritage Trust
The Hunting Heritage Trust has partnered with Guns & Ammo magazine to help spread the word on a special series of one-of-a-kind firearms that have been crafted by major manufacturers and are now being made available to the hunting and shooting sports community in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Guns & Ammo.
In recognition of the unique position Guns & Ammo has held in the shooting sports over the last five decades, and in concert with GunBroker.com, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and the Hunting Heritage Trust, Guns & Ammo has donated the complete series of one-of-a-kind guns for auction on GunBroker.com. Proceeds will benefit programs in support of our hunting and shooting sports heritage.
“The Hunting Heritage Trust is pleased to have been selected by Guns & Ammo to help coordinate this special project,” commented Bob Delfay, President of the Trust. “Working with our partners at GunBroker.com, we look forward to bringing word of this project to GunBroker.com’s active audience of more than 1,000,000 registered users and to maximizing the revenue generated in support of our hunting and shooting sports heritage”.
Currently posted for auction on GunBroker.com are special Ruger and Marlin rifles and a Smith & Wesson revolver. The high bids on each of the guns is already near or in excess of $1,000.00.
The Ruger is a handsomely stocked Ruger No. 1 in .270 caliber. Ruger supplied the blued rifle with highly figured walnut stock and Baron Technologies worked their magic by highlighting the re-polished receiver with the Ruger eagle on the right side and the Guns & Ammo 50th logo on the left.
Many of those who admire engraved firearms believe the lever-action rifle is the perfect platform for the engraver’s art. Marlin turned an 1895 GS over to Baron Technologies and they in turn have produced a one-of-a-kind lever action with a bear engraving on the receiver and the 50th Anniversary Guns & Ammo logo laser-engraved in the stock. The Model 1895 features superb wood and is chambered in .45-70.
A tribute to Guns & Ammo would not be complete without a revolver and a specially-engraved Smith & Wesson Model 500 fills that bill extremely well. Chambered for “the most powerful handgun cartridge in the world”, the 8 3/8-inch stainless-steel revolver has 24-carat gold engraving of the Guns & Ammo 50th Anniversary logo on the side plate and was completed by Baron Technologies.
Coming up next in the special series are offerings from Remington, Springfield Armory and Savage.
Interested collectors can view and bid on these special guns at www.GunBroker.com

Ohio Upland Game Hunting Season Begins November 7
Hunting News ,Ohio Upland Game Hunting Season Begins November 7
Ohio Department of Natural Resources
COLUMBUS, OH – The season for three of Ohio’s most popular game species, ring-necked pheasant, cottontail rabbit, and bobwhite quail begins Friday, November 7, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife.
“The state’s rabbit population is at its highest level since 2003, so opportunities to take cottontails should be plentiful,” said Nathan Stricker, project leader with the division’s Olentangy Wildlife Research Station.
Two years in a row of February snow storms, cool wet springs and dry summers has had a less positive impact on Ohio’s upland game birds, noted Stricker.
“Generally that combination of weather conditions is not good for upland game birds. Quail and pheasant populations have declined in some areas, but there are still locations that will produce wild birds consistently.”
Cottontail rabbit hunting continues through February 28, 2009. Ring-necked pheasant hunting is open through January 11, 2009. Both seasons are closed during the statewide 2008 deer-gun hunting season, December 1 through December 7, as well as the extra weekend of deer-gun hunting December 20-21.
Rabbits, pheasants and quail may be hunted from sunrise to sunset. The daily bag limit for all three species remains unchanged from last year at four rabbits, two pheasants (roosters/males only) and four quail.
Hunters are reminded that snowshoe hares are not legal game in Ohio and may not be taken. Recently reintroduced to northeastern Ohio after nearly a century of absence, snowshoe hares are brown early in the season, resembling cottontail rabbits. To avoid confusion between cottontail rabbits and snowshoe hares, portions of Geauga and Ashtabula counties will be closed to all rabbit hunting from November 7 through December 7. The coats of most hares will have turned white by early December, allowing for proper distinction.
There are two restricted zones that cover portions of Geauga and Ashtabula counties.
The first restricted area encompasses parts of Geauga and Ashtabula counties and is bordered by U.S. Route 6 to the north, U.S. Route 322 to the south, Kile Road to the west, and State Route 534 to the east. The second restricted area is in Ashtabula County bounded on the north by Cork-Cold Springs Road, on the west by Windsor-Mechanicsville Road, on the south by New Hudson Road and on the east by U.S. Route 45. A map of these two areas can be viewed in the 2008-2009 Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations and on the Internet at wildohio.com.
The Division of Wildlife releases pheasants on selected public hunting areas throughout the state prior to opening day of the pheasant season, the second Saturday of the season, and Thanksgiving Day. Hunters may call 1-800-WILDLIFE for locations of specific release sites.
Bobwhite quail hunting is limited to 16 counties in southern Ohio: Adams, Athens, Brown, Butler, Clermont, Clinton, Highland, Jackson, Meigs, Montgomery, Pike, Preble, Ross, Scioto, Vinton and Warren. The season continues through November 30.
Additional hunting information is contained in the 2008-2009 Ohio Hunting Regulations brochure, which is available where hunting licenses are sold, on the Internet at [...]

Improvements Made to Shooting Ranges on Pennsylvania State Game Lands
Competitive Shooting News ,Improvements Made to Shooting Ranges on Pennsylvania State Game Lands
HARRISBURG – Benefiting from Growing Greener II monies,
Pennsylvania Game Commission
Pennsylvania Game Commission officials announce that the agency is nearing completion of its first major overhaul of public shooting ranges on State Game Lands, as it seeks to address lead remediation, repairs and safety issues.
“As hunters head off to the range to sight in their firearms for the upcoming seasons, we urge them to make sure that the public shooting range they may be planning to visit still is open,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “While the agency has been spending more than $200,000 annually to maintain these ranges, vandalism and other examples of misuse of these ranges have required far more investment in upkeep than the agency is able to budget.
“However, thanks to the Rendell Administration and General Assembly providing the Game Commission a portion of the Growing Greener II monies for environmental projects, we are able to address some of the needs of these ranges.”
Through Growing Greener II, the Game Commission has already spent more than $1.7 million on lead remediation and clean up. Safety upgrades have cost $454,000, so far.
The specific services the Game Commission requested and contracted from the National Rifle Association (NRA) are “Range Use and Procedural Evaluations” and “Range Safety and Design Evaluations” at each of the State Game Lands public ranges. The agency has received a written detailed report of findings and recommendations for future operation of these ranges. Several Game Commission staff participated in outdoor shooting range evaluation and operational training conducted by the NRA’s Range Technical Team over the past four years. The agency reviewed documentation and information included in their NRA Range Source Book, including the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s Best Management Practices for Outdoor Ranges. This has resulted in the Game Commission’s desire to objectively evaluate and improve upon its existing shooting range setup.
As was announced in Feb. 9, 2005 (See News Release #010-05), the Game Commission temporarily closed four ranges due to safety concerns: SGL 50 in Somerset County; SGL 91 in Luzerne County; SGL 157 in Bucks County; and Indian Rock (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers property) in York County.
Roe noted that, over the past three years, the agency has been closing ranges for needed work and then reopening them as soon as possible. Work started in the Northwest Region and then moved across the Commonwealth, and the final projects are being conducted in the Northeast Region.
“In addition to having the NRA make an objective review of safety conditions at each range, we contracted with Metals Treatment Technologies, a leader in the nation among companies providing lead remediation and stabilization services on outdoor shooting ranges,” Roe said. “This contract includes the services of Dick Peddicord and Associates, a nationally-recognized expert in environmental range issues and lead remediation and abatement. We are requesting lead remediation and stabilization of soil materials removed from backstop berms, side berms and range floors at all Game Commission shooting ranges.
“Lead remediation measures [...]

Muzzleloader season brings a first to "Kentucky Afield" TV
Shooting Industry News ,Muzzleloader season brings a first to “Kentucky Afield” TV
Kentucky Afield
Frankfort, Kentucky – Early muzzleloader season for deer sees one hunter harvest dinner in an unexpected fashion this weekend, October 25 and 26, on the “Kentucky Afield” television show.
Hunting deer the old-fashioned way – that is, with traditional flintlock firearms – is savored among many hunters. The effective range of a period muzzleloader is far shorter than with a modern rifle, plus you’ll only get to fire once. While the longer barrel of a rifle improves your chances, “Kentucky Afield” Host Tim Farmer chooses to take his shot with a flintlock pistol. Even for the nation’s oldest hunting show, the opportunity to showcase this seldom-seen style is a milestone. Follow Farmer into the fields of Nicholas County for an unusual hunt.
Also on the program, we wrap up our three-part series, “Deer Processing: From the field to the freezer.” In part III, Scott County butcher Sim Harp joins Farmer in the kitchen for cutting the venison into steaks, hams, roasts, and more before concluding with freezer-friendly packaging tips. DVR users take note: These are excerpts from the popular DVD normally sold on the program’s website.
“Kentucky Afield” is a production of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. It is the longest continuously-running outdoor television show in the nation. The program airs Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Eastern /7:30 p.m. Central and is repeated Sunday at 4 p.m. Eastern/3 p.m. Central on KET 1. NRA Announces First Annual Disabled Indoor Air Rifle Sectional Championships
Competitive Shooting News ,NRA Announces First Annual Disabled Indoor Air Rifle Sectional Championships
NRA Disabled Indoor Air Rifle Championships
Fairfax, Virginia – NRA’s Disabled Shooting Services announces the creation of the 2009 National Disabled Indoor Air Rifle Sectional Championships. Sectional Championships will be hosted at clubs and facilities across the country.
Each year the NRA conducts National Open Rifle Sectional Championships in NRA 3-position Smallbore Rifle, 4-position Smallbore Rifle, International 3-P Smallbore Rifle and International Air Rifle. The Championships are the largest event of the indoor season and will now include International Indoor Air Rifle for disabled shooters.
The NRA National Disabled Indoor Air Rifle Championships will give competitors with physical disabilities a chance to compete in national individual and team events by comparing their scores with those fired in clubs all over the country. Scores are compatible because of the similar conditions existing in indoor ranges.
“We are very excited about the creation of this championship. It was created with the goal of full integration into the NRA Open Indoor Air Rifle Championships in the future,” stated Vanessa Warner, NRA’s Manager of Disabled Shooting Services. “The plan is to eventually be able to remove “Disabled” from the title, create a Disabled category and allow both disabled and able-bodies to compete shoulder to shoulder for the title of National Champion.”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau survey in 2003, there are currently 50 million people living with disabilities in America today. The integration of the Disabled Indoor Air Rifle Championships with the Open Indoor Air Rifle Championships will expand opportunities for disabled individuals to participate in the shooting sports.

TASK FORCE 20/20 MEETS With the Future in Mind!

National Shooting Sports Foundation
The 2008 Shooting Sports Summit ended last summer with a commitment by attendees to form a task force that would focus on recruitment and retention strategies for growing hunting and target shooting in the face of such serious challenges as urbanization, a changing culture and lack of access to huntable lands and shooting ranges.
At the core of the NSSF-sponsored Summit was a new three-year research project that is expected to play a key role in developing recruitment and retention strategies. And now the process has begun. Representatives from 26 organizations representing six industry segments came together in person and by teleconference last week in Dulles, Va., for the first meeting of Task Force 20/20.
Out of this gathering came the significant goal of increasing participation in hunting by 20 percent and target shooting by 20 percent over the next five years. “With hunting and shooting facing serious challenges in the near future, these individuals checked their hats at the door and with enthusiasm and optimism made an auspicious start for Task Force 20/20 and all that it means to the future of hunting and shooting,” said NSSF senior vice president Chris Dolnack.
