How to Remove Gas Assembly From a Fn49 In 30.06 Rifle?

Question: I’m trying remove the gas assembly from an FN49 in 30.06. I can’t get the pin in the gas assembly out. I’m also trying to take off the gas assembly on another FN49 and have the pin out but the assembly won’t move. Which punch set would be the best to try (have already broken one punch on this) and how do I get the gas assembly off? In the firearm’s disassembly book I have, the chapter on FN49s has this in one step: take out the pin in the gas assembly and remove the gas assembly. At the moment, I have the end caps off both barrels and I want to switch the gas assemblies from one barrel to the other, both in 30.06.

Gunsmith Professional Punch Set

Answer: If you’re trying to remove the entire sight base you may need to drill out the pins and replace them for the next barrel. They do not often come out cleanly. If you are working on the gas tube that goes into the sight housing, the whole assembly could be rusted together due to corrosive ammunition used on the past. Those parts would need to be soaked in penetrating oil for a few days to get them to free up. Even then you may have to resort to drilling the pin out if there is corrosion present. As far as Gun Tool Punches go, be sure to us a starter punch in the beginning until you are sure the pin is moving. Then switch to a standard punch.

Question: I have a Remington Model 742 Rifle, which was made in 1967, and I’m looking for a scope mount. I’m interested in a dovetail type mount on a two piece base if possible. Also, I need some detachable rings for quick removal. What would you recommend?

Remington Rifle Scope Mounts

Answer: We don’t really have a set for the 742, but the one for the 7400 can be made to work by drilling and tapping an extra hole or two. The number for the Leupold mount is (#526-492-180) and the medium rings are (#526-471-810) along with other heights on that page. This is all we have for quick detachable rings that can be made to work on that gun.
