Nebraska National Archery in the Schools Tournament Set for March 28 in Lincoln

LINCOLN, Nebraska - -(OutdoorWire.com)-  The 2009 Nebraska National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament looks to attract more than 400 young archers to the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln on Saturday, March 28.

“The Nebraska tournament is an amazing culminating state event for archers who have taken part in NASP within their schools,” says Aaron Hershberger, a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission outdoors education specialist. “The 2009 event looks to be the biggest and best yet.”

This is the fourth year for the Nebraska state tournament, and some major changes have been made to help more archers and schools participate. “The tournament has been scheduled for March to better avoid other sporting events, it’s been moved indoors to better re-create the environment where these archers normally shoot, and this year we’ve added more activities in which the archers can participate,” said Hershberger. “This is a family event and organizers hope that families will come to support not only their archers and participate in the activities.”

In addition to the standard NASP competition shoot, archers can take part in a Pop-Up 3D range hosted by the Lincoln Prairie Bowmen, they can challenge fellow archers to a duel at the Saunders Archery SACO Shoot-Out, and attend an exhibition shoot by Nebraska’s very own archery sharpshooter, Erika Anschutz.

“Our goal is to make the Nebraska State Tournament a family event and not solely a competition,” said Wes Sheets, Nebraska NASP coordinator. NASP instructors have an added incentive as well, thanks to several local bow-shop professionals. The national NASP board phased out the old brass nock locators we have been using for a safer string alternative,” said Sheets. “With that in mind, we are offering a free service to all NASP instructors who bring their archers and bows to the tournament. We will replace all the brass locators on your bows with the newly approved string nock locators.”

“I am still amazed by how much fun the archers have taking part in this friendly competition of the NASP tournament,” said Hershberger.

“Even though archers hope to take home an individual award or be part of a team that takes a trophy back to school, the smiles on everyone’s faces prove they just enjoy being there – being part of something great.”

“Many people who attend the state tournament are also impressed by the diversity of the archers taking part. Archery is quite unique in that you don’t have to be very strong, super quick or even tall to be successful. Archery is truly a skill that anyone enjoy throughout their life,” Hershberger said.

Registration for the NASP State Tournament is done through your school’s archery program. Schools are encouraged to field a team, however individual archers from a school can take part as well. More information, as well as guidelines and forms, is available online at www.OutdoorNebraska.org under NGPC Programs. Registrations will be taken through March 15.
