U.S. recession a hot topic; innovative thinking on the agenda.
Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin - The country’s economic condition is topic number one at the semiannual meeting of Whitetails Unlimited’s field directors, being held this week at WTU national headquarters in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.
“Like all businesses in the country we are examining every aspect of our operations to make us more efficient, responsive, and resourceful so we can continue to expand our mission of conservation and education, said Dave Hawkey, vice president of field operations. “Our field directors are the core connection to our members, and so far we’re holding on through this bad economy.”
“We’re working hard to keep our events compelling and entertaining, and still have them be effective fundraising tools for our local chapters,” said Gary Ramsey, field director for New York and New England. “It’s great when we can all get together, face-to-face, and exchange ideas on what works and how we can make things better.”
Kevin Greb, field director for Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, added, “We spend a lot of time talking about what our chapters are doing, and how we can help them achieve their goals. Our events can range from 100 to 800 members, and our goal is to raise funds for conservation, both locally and nationally. Each event is unique, and some areas of the country have really been hammered by the economy, while other areas are doing OK, so we just have to work a little harder in some areas.”
Darrel Martin, field director for Illinois and western Indiana, said that despite the nation’s economic condition, the overall strategy in attracting banquet attendees remains the same this year as in the past – offer great merchandise at a great, entertaining banquet, and return 50 percent of the net banquet proceeds to fund projects in the local area. “We want to provide the best reasons possible for them to choose a Whitetails Unlimited event, but we’re not going to drop the quality of the events or the merchandise we have. We get people at banquets who just want to have a great night with their family and friends, and we get people who are really involved with either local or national conservation projects. Either way, they know they’re going to have a great time. The most heartening thing is that we have seen many, many members who are going out of their way to continue supporting Whitetails Unlimited, and we remain committed to supporting our members and chapters.”
