Springfield, VA – -(AmmoLand.com)-Recently, there have been a lot of emails and phone calls about SB 2099 — a “new” bill that purportedly requires Americans to claim guns on their 1040 federal tax forms, provide fingerprints, and pay a $50 tax on each individual handgun they own.

The Hoax Reads:

Senate Bill SB-2099 will require us to put on our 2009 1040 federal tax form all guns that you have or own. It may require
fingerprints and a tax of $50 per gun.

This bill was introduced on Feb. 24. This bill will become public knowledge 30 days after it is voted into law. This is an amendment to the Internal Revenue Act of 1986. This means that the Finance Committee can pass this without the Senate voting on it at all.

The full text of the proposed amendment is on the U.S. Senate homepage, https://www.senate.gov/

You can find the bill by doing a search by the bill number, SB-2099.

This is simply not true. There is no S. 2099 in the Congress right now. This is simply a case of taking a little bit of truth from an old bill that was shot down, and creating a hoax. This is a hoax, the bill was introduced in 2000, not 2009. Il languished in committee and died. It had nothing to do with the IRS or tax reporting. The proposed $50 charge was not to the gun owner but the manufacturer.

Has Sb-2099 passed and if so when does it go into effect?

Thank you for looking at this and letting us know what is going on.

I see things like this and because I don't trust the government, I think there might be some truth there. Thanks

SB-2099 is an old bill, but currently there is the house bill H.R. 45: Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act of 2009.

Here is the link to Govtrack.us: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h11

Don't take it from me, go and read it for yourself. There are no co-sponsors for the bill currently but that doesn't mean that they are ever going to give up!

H.R 45 is for all intensive purposes a dead bill and not to be worried over at this time.

We have more dangerous problems with the radical supreme court appointments like Sotomayor.

This is the kind of thing every person on every forum SHOULD be doing.

Double check everything you hear. It is so easy to get suckered into some of this BS and I've seen people ignorantly post this stuff and it only leads to misinformation which dilutes the list of things that should actually concern us.

We should all make a point to verify what we hear. Thanks for pointing this one out.
