HARRISBURG, PA – -(AmmoLand.com)- As part of its 50th anniversary of hunter education, Pennsylvania Game Commission officials recently honored 24 dedicated volunteer instructors who now have been teaching hunter education for half a century.
“This corps of instructors has witnessed the historic events that have changed the world and our lives over the past 50 years, and rolled with the changes that have defined hunter education in Pennsylvania along the way,” said Keith Snyder, Game Commission Hunter Trapper Education Division chief. “We offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to these individuals, as well as all of our volunteer instructors, for their service that is a keystone in the Game Commission’s efforts to pass along our state’s rich hunting and trapping heritage to current and future generations.”
To commemorate this 50th anniversary, the agency commissioned George LaVanish, noted Pennsylvania wildlife artist, to create Tomorrow’s Hunters, a painting that captures the essence of hunter education by depicting an instructor and two students involved in a training exercise overlooked by a ethereal vignette of popular game birds and animals, symbolizing the dreams and aspirations of young hunters everywhere.
Tomorrow’s Hunters was produced as a print and together with a companion embroidered patch were presented to each active hunter education instructor earlier this year. As part of the ceremony, Snyder, Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe and Board of Game Commissioners President Gregory Isabella presented those instructors with 50 years of service with their prints and patches.
Those instructors honored were: Leonard Anderson, Indiana, Indiana County; Randolph Bogolea, Conway, Beaver County; Michael Brandon, North Versaille, Allegheny County; Glenn L. Clark, Greenville, Mercer County; Mahlon Crawford, York, York County; Oran L. Deemer, Zelienople, Butler County; Everett E. Denlinger, Ronks, Lancaster County; Claude Dranzik, Forbes Road, Westmoreland County; David J. Dyer, Elysburg, Columbia County; Jack Kenyon, Mansfield, Tioga County; William E. Levan Jr., Northumberland, Montour County; Jay F. Livziey, Williamsport, Lycoming County; Leon D. Ochs, Reading, Berks County; Arthur Olsen Jr., Stoystown, Somerset County; Harry J. Onspaugh, Meadville, Crawford County; George Parsell, Galeton, Potter County; Alfred N. Pedder, Marienville, Forest County; Clifford F. Riffle, Ligonier, Westmoreland County; Truman L. Shaffer, Mt. Pleasant Mills, Snyder County; Harry J. Shellito, Conneaut Lake, Crawford County; William D. Smith, Aliquippa, Beaver County; Justin M. Stuckey, Summerdale, Perry County; George Szilvasi, Midland, Beaver County; and Russell M. Whisler Sr., Manchester, York County.
Of the 5,000 patches, nearly 2,000 patches will sell for $5.66, plus shipping/handling and state sales tax. Orders for the patch are being accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis via “The Outdoor Shop” on the Game Commission’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us). Of the 3,000 prints, roughly 200 prints will sell for $79.95 for unframed print, and $179.95 for framed prints, plus shipping/handling and state sales tax.
