Scouting For Autumn Gobblers
Bass Pro Shops - -(AmmoLand.com)- If your goal is to take an autumn gobbler, get out there and find their roost trees and under them, look for gobbler tracks, j-shaped droppings, and black-edged breast feathers.
If you can, also find the sunny, shallow, loose, soil depressions they use for dusting areas.
Now, find their preferred food sources like grasshoppers in the fields and acorns in the woods. To really improve your odds, get out real early one morning and find out which way they fly down from the roost.
Once the season is underway, you will know all their preferred areas. When you find them, rush the flock to scatter them and then set up and wait for them to regroup while listening and calling sporadically. Do not call aggressively and stay alert. Gobblers will sometimes answer with a cluck or yelp.
Hunting autumn gobblers will test your skills, senses and patience but it sure is fun! Walter Parrott is a member of the RedHead® Pro Hunting Team.
