Salt Creek, CO --(AmmoLand.com Firearms News)-Tred Barta is in his living room, watching an episode of his TV show, “The Best and Worst of Tred Barta.” It’s the last one he taped before a pair of rare medical conditions put him a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
There’s Barta, in blue pajamas, on the business end of a fly rod. He’s running around a Guatemalan resort trying to mimic how a sailfish might behave. Finally, he jumps in the pool, splashing, bobbing, filled with the glee of the moment.
Originally diagnosed with a a rare spinal stroke, Barta is actually suffering from an equally obscure condition known as Waldenstrom’s Disease, a cancer-like illness that thickens the blood.
The damage from the disease cost Barta the use of his legs, but it remains to be seen how much this will slow him down — he has been steadily practicing archery from the wheel chair to which he is now confined.
Versus has renewed his show for next year, and all of his sponsors are still with him.
“My goal now is to encourage others,” Barta said. “I want to inspire people, to be a role model.”
“Life is good, life is happy,” Tred says. “What a privilege to be here.
“You can change a life, you can change the world,” he added. “That’s what I want the rest of my life to be about.”

12/30/07 I was paralyzed at the T-9 level by a spinal stroke although different from yours.
While mowing a sendero on my ranch in Texas a dead tree fell on me pinning me on my tractor. My chest was on the steering wheel and my butt on the seat. the tree fell across my back bending it forward to the point it pinched off the artery to my spine and thus a stoke.
I have since returned to hunting and would like to share with you some of the adaptive equipment I use.
I am shooting my bow some but because of fractures to all my ribs in the left side and my shoulder drawing and stabilizing my bow is tuff. I am back to work as a surgeon in Houston. You can read my story in the March issue of Reader Digest.

Hang in there Tred. I am also a T-4 para. wheelchair bound. I have been since 1972. Have not let it stop me from fishing and hunting. I know it will not stop you either. Just learned of your illness while watching veres on Dec 18 it brought tears to my eyes a man so active.I am 62 and could never do what you could so I will always have you in my prayers till you get better.

Mr. Barta as many others found out about your illness on versus. Sir you can and will beat this, to continue on to bring the people what they want to see (keeping it real). I came home from Iraq with disabilitys and am working to over come them one hunt at a time.

I always admired the fact that you were a business owner that realized some pretty awsome dreams. In your show you always keep it pretty real and entertaining…good humor. Dear Tred, Hang in there brother. I was amazed to see what had happened to you.I was completely paralyzed back in 1985 and to make a long story short now walk with a cane.However I am extremely weak in all four extremeties.I use everything from wheelchairs walkers canes Jazzy etc to get around.I shoot guns crossbow, blackpowder, compounds, recurve and anything else I can get my hands on.Your show has always inspired me to do things that might not be the easiest but with the tenacity that could have the greatest of rewards.I have been blessed and touched by many as I hope you are .Take care & rehab as hard as you can for as long as you can!PS. If you see wheelchair tracks going up a tree just me deer hunting; )

You are such an inspiration to me. I had a spinal cord stroke two years ago and was paralyzed from waist down. I can now walk unasissted but still have a way to go. Like you I go to the gym every day. I recently obtained a recurve bow and am enjoying it very much. I love your shows and watch them daily.

You are such an inspiration to all and your show has been my favorite for a couple of years. I am an avid bowhunter and hope 1 day to have a long or recurve bow. I know you will never give up and will always take life by the horns in the positve way you know how. You are such a inspiration to me and God has amazing plans for your life. I absolutley love your talks about hunting and its all about who you are with and the journey. I am only 15 years old and unfortuantly my generation has lost some outdoor situations and sit on their butts all day. I encourage you to encourage young people

I too suffer from Waldenstrom’s and am currently dealing with weak legs due to a tumor that impacted some nerves below my spine…I continue to work towards getting around on my own two feet and find your story to be quite an inspiration.

I don’t always uderstand why God does the things he does, but I can’t help but believe he has a plan for you. I love you’re show and the hunting ethics you preach. Both my daughter and I know the Tred Barta of the future will be every bit as legendary as the Tred Barta of the past. Keep being Tred and know that thousands of poelpe are praying for you and your family. You are still “The man”!!!
