Comments on: Virginia Democratic Candidates for Senate Seats Cant Answer if they Support 2nd Amendment

The right approach to remedy the lack of knowledge on the Democratic side is to provide fact-based briefs to key constituencies.

I have discussed this idea with several members in the VCDL leadership and I think there will be an effort in Virginia to provide direct briefings to Democratic Committees in 2010.

The Democrats are not the enemy, but some very misinformed Democrats have been allowed, for too long, to steer Democratic Party policy on gun issues in the wrong direction.

I believe with better information, presented in fact-based briefings to the state and local leadership committees, Democratic policies toward gun issues will swing back into the direction of freedom and individual responsibility.

Mr. Bill Fleming is a good example of a Democrat who has demonstrated the ability and willingness to listen, when presented with good data. Prior to our conversations on the subject, Bill was relying on rather sloppy opinion research provided by the local media. Unlike many of his Democratic predecessors, he openly discusses gun issues on the website and pledges to consult with the VCDL (When has any candidate stated that on their website?) along with law enforcement and other “stakeholders” before making policy decisions.

While some Republicans and some Democrats will remain anti-gun, no matter what information they are presented with, it is prudent to continue to push good data out to the public and especially helpful to provide briefings for key political leadership groups regardless of where they appear on the political spectrum.

Just the fact that he believes there is a “Gun Show Loop Hole” shows he has no idea about gun ownership in VA and is repeating the same anti gun BS of “I believe in the 2nd amendment as long as I get to decide who it applys to…”

He should call up his like minded buddy Bloomberg for some election support.

If I want to purchase a weapon, my personal preference is to buy it from a reputable licensed dealer who will stand behind the transaction, and unlicensed dealers selling equivalent guns to a those of a licensed dealer strikes me as unfair competition for licensed dealers.

Since there appear to be extenuating arguments for leaving this so-called loophole open, I would need to talk with “stakeholders”, including law enforcement officers, the NRA, and the Virginia Citizens Defense League about the specific piece of legislation that may be brought up.”
