Madison, NC –-(AmmoLand.com)- After almost a century, the Model 1911 R1 marks the Remington brand’s return to the manufacture of the legendary 1911 handgun.

In 1917, the U.S. Ordnance Department issued an order to Remington-UMC to manufacture 500,000 1911s for our fighting men in the armed services.

The first Remington-UMC produced 1911 pistols were delivered in August of 1918. On November 11, 1918, the Armistice ending WWI was signed and the contract from the Ordnance Department with Remington-UMC was suspended. In all, Remington-UMC produced 21,677 1911s.

You could say the 1911 was firmly implanted in our DNA, and now after 91 years, its back.

The Remington-branded 1911 R1 is an A1 variant of the 1911 with modern upgrades. Like the original 1911, the 1911 R1 has a flat mainspring housing, short trigger and double diamond grips. 1911 devotees will appreciate the modern enhancements on the 1911 R1, such as a flared and lowered ejection port; beveled magazine well; loaded chamber indicator; high profile dovetailed single-dot front and two-dot rear sights; a crisp 3.5 – 5 pound trigger pull; and a match grade stainless steel barrel and barrel bushing.

It also has the Series 80-style firing pin block safety. The Remington new 1911 R1 pistol will be shipped in a custom carry case with two seven-round magazines and a barrel bushing wrench. Most importantly, it’s made in Ilion, New York, with all the pride, precision and out-of-the-box performance you have come to expect from the Remington brand.

The 1911 is the most customized and proven pistol design ever manufactured. This single-action, semi-automatic, magazine-fed, recoil-operated handgun chambered for the 45 ACP cartridge has left its mark on battlefields and at competitions all over the world.

On March 29th, 1911, this John M. Browning designed pistol was selected as the official sidearm of America’s Armed Forces. It was their standard-issue sidearm from 1911 to 1985 and is still used by some U.S. forces to this day. On May 14, 2010, the Remington R1 1911 Pistol will be unveiled at the 139th National Rifle Association Annual Meetings in Charlotte, North Carolina, and will help this iconic American pistol shine brighter than ever.

Initially, the Remington 1911 R1 Handgun will be available through select independent dealers beginning in June 2010. Make it a point today, to own a part of history, the first Remington 1911 in 91 years.

I have broke in both the Springfield 1911a1 and the Remington r1s groups of three shots at 25 yards. And after a good break in. even the biggest piece of junk will. well it will be the best piece of juni it can be.

I have a 1911A1 Springfield stainless and a 1911R1s stainless by Remington took them both out to shoot. I am old school as far as breakin the first rule is all guns are loaded rule 2 all guns are dirty before cleaning refer to rule 1. when I went through. training was simple. first before you ever shoot you unload and clean the pistol, then you fire one end then you break it down and clean it. then you fire again this procedure is done got the first 50 shot. for the next 30 it is every 3 shot you… Read more »

Bought the R1 a couple months ago and have fired approximately 1000 rounds through it and still no jams. I have tried hot boxing and all sorts of methods and cannot jam this thing. As a police officer I have to rely on my sidearm to get me home at the end of my shift and I have made the R1 my duty weapon…100% confident in this exceptional firearm

Phimsiri,Decha

It is a good firearm. It must be me 1 unit atleast. (from thailand)

Interesting video about the "fatal flaw." I shoot with my thumb. To maintain proper control of the firearm requires it to be pointed back at me. I am very accurate using this technique and have no problem hitting the target. I love my Kevlar vest.

Brian

"Fatal Flaw" I've never seen anyone shoot like that. Personally, I use my PINKY finger to shoot. And I keep wondering why I miss my targets and the gun FLIES out of my hand every time I shoot it. Oh, well, maybe I'll try using the middle finger.

The Guy

Bouth a .22 pistol that required high velocity ammo. Bought 2 bricks (1000 rounds) of Remington ammunition. Had a 23% failure rate with Remington (made in China?) Lots of members in our Club are now staying away from Remington products because of all the problems with their products! I think they are still trading on their past reputation of quality.

Hankmeister

I have never ever seen anyone shoot with their middle finger. Anyone who "teaches" this form of shooting style is an absolute idiot in my book and I don't care how many credentials he/she has. The most instinctive way to shoot (at least here in America) is with the index finger … period. The only way I can see someone shooting with a middle finger is if they are missing their index finger but then there wouldn't be a problem there either. I've shot all kinds of pistols including the Tokarev, Makarov, Browning Hi-Power, SA XDs, Glocks, S&W 469s, Lugers,… Read more »

Just bought the 1911 r1 Enhanced on 07-19-2011. I have shot 150 rounds and then some. Gun shoots great, no issues. I will put it against anything out there that is $400 to $500 more. Paid $799 great deal!!!!!! Gun retails for $940.00

I purchased a R1 On the 7th of April and all I can say is: get it on Remington. I put 100 Rounds of 230 Ball through it and it functioned flawless. I own a Kimber and a Springfield 1911's and This R1 Hit the target as good or better than My other 2. I also own a Llama Firestorm 1911 and it is also a good Pistol. The Remington 1911R1 is a OUTSTANDING weapon ( I paid $1,100 for the Kimber) and the price is with in most people's budget ( Mine was $686.99) and damn well worth it.… Read more »

Just a addition to the March 27th letter. First time I shot the 1911R1 the gun would not chamber the first 2 rounds and several times after that, had another NRA teacher come in and the same thing happened to him, he tried different ammo and different clips. Sent gun back to Remington, got it back in a week. Tried to shot it again and the same thing happened again, same NRA teacher tried shooting it plus a store salesmen, same thing happened again ( plus the sights fell off.). Bought my wife a S&W 686, that gun has it… Read more »

Just bought a remington 1911R1. What a piece of sh**. Shells would not chamber several times, sent it back to Remington and still does not chamber all the time. Both sights fell off, set screws not tight. Wish I never bought this gun.

Darrin Green

My 21 year old son just bought an R1. The gun will not chamber a hollow point round. ( three different brands tried ) After shooting 100 rounds the first time out , the rear sight was missing in action on his second outing at the range. I have owned , hunted with and shot Remington rifles for 35 years without one problem. I think they should stick to rifle production. I will stick with my glock 30 .45. My glock will digest any ammo you can feed it and I can feel safe carrying it knowing it will go… Read more »

one of my gun that i always use in firing

D.Carter

Purchased the new Remington 1911 R1 and was very happy that American craftsmanship had produced the gun. Field striped the gun and the ejector fell off. I never fired the first round. So much for American craftsmanship ?

When the feces impacts with the wind-producing device, and you have to grab something to protect yourself against the unknown, something to trust your life with, this is the weapon of choice.

robert krawiec

Saw one at NRA convention, between waiting for availability to stores, and time spent in Republik of New Jerseys paperwork. Cant wait.

P Murphy

A local gunsmith told me this pistol is made by Rock Island and bought then assembled by Remington…is this true?

Gary

Just got my R1 and can't wait to test it. What a great feel and looks. Takes me back in time to Bien Hoa.

Oh, by the way, the "Fatal Fire" thing is laughable. Guy needs to get a real job.

Doug

Jim, I have not encountered any tolerance problems with the 1911 R1. The gun doesn't rattle like my Colt 1911 A1. The Remington is a real "nail driver". As far as acuracy, most firearms are more accurate than most shooters. The R1 is as accurate as my Colt if not more so and is definately more accurate than my Glock 23. Any time you can fire a 2 in. group from 25 yards tolerances don't seem to be a issue.

Jim Skelton

Middle fingers are not for triggers! As for the R1, all I can do right now is drool and read reviews. I looked at one in the Portland Gun Show last week and was very impressed, but one of the local gun stores says tolerances in the R1 are looser than in the XD, so no way it will shoot as well. We'll see about that……soon. In the meantime, does anyone know anything about this "tolerance" claim?

Big Gay Al

With regard to the video, "1911 fatal flaw," the only flaw is in the head of whoever made that video. I've carried a 1911 off and on for over 30 years, and there is no way I can exert enough pressure with my finger alone, to push the slide stop pin out. Also, if you look at the position of the finger, anyone who fires a 1911 like that, is going to injure their finger on the slide, as it recoils. Do NOT shoot a 1911 this way. It could really hurt. 🙂

David Leveille

I have been shooting 1911A1s since I was 18 and in the Army. I am nolonger 18 and the high rise sights are a plus for my 57 year old eyes. I do wish they would come with a lanyard loop. I dont want to lose it in the drink somewhere. Thanks

Doug

Well, I finally got a chance to fire my new 1911 R-1. I fired 250 rounds of everything from the cheap Chinese junk to the best hollow points made. I even staggered the magazines with hollow points, round nose, Cor-Bon and the afore mentioned Chinese junk and fired 15 rounds as fast as I could. I could not get this weapon to malfunction. The accuracy is spot on from the factory with no adjustments. Trigger pull is lighter than my Glock 23 with 5 lb. trigger bar and breaks perfectly with no creep. I did a few hostage take down… Read more »

I am somewhat of a novice when it comes to handguns, but I have always wanted a 1911. Most were out of my price range, but I bought the 1911-R1 back in Sept. On my 1st trip to the range it would jam about 1x per clip, esp. on the 2nd or 3rd round. After 50 or so rounds I gave up, thinking I just threw away $600. Called Remington, returned it and received it back at my house, in 1 week, all paid for by Remington. I wasn't able to get back to the range until yesterday, but I… Read more »

The Fatal Flaw??? I have been shooting a 1911 in various configurations for over twenty years, some in competition, and have never seen this happen, heard of it happening nor had it happen to me… This is a joke right? The only Fatal Flaw I can see is that someone might actually follow this guy's advice…

Doug

Just bought 1911 R-1 have not had a chance to fire it yet but it sure feels great. I'm not anticipating any problems since I do not fire from the "fatal flaw" position. I have been a Ga. certified Police firearms instructor since 1998 and have never seen anything as rediculous as that grip!

al gentry

Say, why not try this? Hold a little higher, and to the right a little. just kidding…sort of. I just put a deposit on the first one I've seen in person. I would rather carry one of these in a military type combat situation, than anything super tuned. I like them a little loose, so they work in really bad environments. I carried a 1911 10 hours a day, in SE Asia, in the Monsoons, for what it seems like was a couple of months, and it kept on ticking. This one feels very similar, maybe better put together. Like… Read more »

shot the 1911 r1 today…. the only thing i found a bit troublesome was that it shoots low to the left… is this a barrel break in problem or should i adjust the sights??

new1911user

just got the new 1911 R1… taking it to the range tomorrow..hope it shoots as well as it looks…

Matt

The 1911 "fatal flaw" video has to be the most rediculous thing have ever seen, who shoots with the middle finger? Gee do you think this just might happen to be an old soviet prop. video? ;>)

Joe

I purchased the R1 on Gunbroker.com and have shot 100 rounds so far. I was attracted to the R1 for a couple of reasons:

1) the good looks

2) the price

The gun performed flawlessly, no malfunctions what-so-ever. The only thing is mine shoots a little low & left. The rear sight is windage adjustable but not for elevation. I am contemplating replacing the sights.

Overall, happy I bought the R1.

Tony

I purchased a Remington 1911 R1 a few weeks ago and put it through its paces. The gun functions flawlessly and accurately, and the recoil is very controllable. When you handle the pistol it feels great in the hand. While it is "mostly" true to the old 1911 design I do appreciate the upgraded sights. They are very easy to line up and stand out in most lighting conditions. The overall quality of the pistol is good, but there are some sharp edges in spots on the pistol that will require some "softening." It is not a collector's grade pistol… Read more »

While I am a fan of Remington, I do have my doubts about this pistol and other products produced in the past few years. I have purchased several of their products in the past 2 years, and the quality isn't what it used to be, it seems like the QC dept. only works weekends. I purchased a 700 SPS Varmint and the front scope mount holes were .080 left of the rears which made zeroing my scope near impossible without adjustable rings. The stock is garbage. I also purchased an 870 slug gun. The quality is far from either of… Read more »

hey guy up there with the video now how many people have you seen injured from the "supposedly" design flaw on the 1911 I havent heard of anybody and if it was a serious problem the U.S. would have changed it along time ago so I think that video is total horse shit. I have several 1911s and I have never never never had a problem like what was proposed in you so called warning. So I think you need to do a little more research on what you call a warning and whoever is shooting needs to go to… Read more »

What sort of prices are you seeing on the new Remington 1911?

Chris

People who actually shoot, shoot the 1911. Everybody with a brain knows that………..

Larry Pickett

I saw the Remington 1911 R1 at one of the local Gun Stores here in the Brazoria County Texas area and held and functioned it. I decided to buy it and went back to the store to get it and it was gone, just 3 hrs. later. I've not seen another one at all, just hear the same story, "we don't know when we are going to get any". Hope they are out soon, it's a great pistol.

Douglas

My friend works at the Ilion plant and does the test firing. Says that all shoot under 3 at 25 and some shoot less than one. For those, he write down the serials. The first time in 20 years I ever heard him say that he was tired of shooting.

unhappy

K..Took my new Remington R1 for its first test run at the range today. Was a disaster right out of the box.Weapon would fire the first round chambered but failed on the second shot. After the first round either the trigger or some safety system would not allow the hammer to fall."Felt bound up"..once I did get the hammer to fall on the second round but failed to engage the firing pin??????.So its on its way back to Remington..Will say the 5 rounds I did manage to fire I was able to cut center target on all 5 at 15… Read more »

SP AMES

On the video about the 1911 fatal flaw.I would never shoot with my middle finger unless my right hand index finger gets blown off.In that case the pin will still be safe.Lefties need not to worry either!!

jlong

I am a gunsmith in north Carolina and look forward to the return of the remington. I believe for the price you can not beat the performance of a Kimber. I am not happy about the Remington having a loaded chamber. That is ridiculous to have that on your 1911.

stuart conner

still think you should have brought new 1911 out in 2011 and called it the 2011. you and no one else will ever replace the original 1911.

Bill

I couldn't pull and shoot like that if I had to..Although it may be a bit steadier in target shooting where you actually think about gripping the gun for accuracy. (and I'm not even sure about that) Holsters aren't made to have the gun pulled that way. Bill

shooter J

Mr. Veit AKA 5shot has been pushing this ridiculous point shooting method of using the pointing finger along the slide while using the middle finger to pull the trigger.

This goes against all teaching and common sense. Since the point shooting "grip" cannot be utilized in this fashion.

icarus

how many people shot with their middle finger? I don't know of anybody that teaches that method of point and shot. No police departments, federal or local. This is the reason why the design wasn't changed on the 1911.

Joihn Veit

The 1911 past the reliability shoot off with flying colors way back when.

And I don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but I just put this video up on U-tube:

The barrel bushing wrench is to assist in removing the barrel bushing during normal breakdown procedures. It's nothing new or radical and is actually a pretty useful tool to prevent accidents and it's easy on the barrel.

Moishe

Vern you don't HAVE to use it, but it makes things easier.

john

it's a pretty radical redesign if you need a wrench to take off the barrel bushing….
