World’s Best Shooters Poised for NWTF’s Turkey Shoot

EDGEFIELD, SC --(Ammoland.com)- Many of the world’s best shotgun-shooters are set to compete at the National Wild Turkey Federation’s 17th annual Turkey Shoot at the Meadows National Gun Club in Forsyth, Ga., Aug. 20 to Aug. 22.

Hundreds of shooters from across North America are pre-registered for the event, which features three days of intense sporting clays action. Known to many enthusiasts as “golf with a shotgun,” sporting clays is a form of clay pigeon shooting in which clay targets are thrown at a wide variety of speeds, distances and trajectories to simulate hunting scenarios.

“Turkey Shoot is the perfect place for shooting enthusiasts to hone their skills, while many hunters enjoy practicing for upcoming hunting seasons on the challenging courses,” said Rhett Simmons, NWTF director of special events. “Year after year we have great prizes, but people keep coming back because they enjoy a weekend of fun and laughter.”

Turkey Shoot participants will compete for $100,000 in cash and prizes.

Shooting events include the 200-target Sporting Clays Championship with prizes for concurrent divisions including ladies, juniors, subjuniors and veterans, the 100-target Browning preliminary event, and the 50-bird, Briley squaded sub-gauge competition.

Prizes for top performers in each division include cash and more than 80 guns. During what promises to be one of the event’s most dramatic moments, the NWTF will announce the winner of a raffle for a 2010 Chevrolet truck.

Turkey Shoot is known for its friendly environment for shooters of all skill levels. Proceeds from this family event benefit the NWTF’s Wheelin’ Sportsmen outreach program, which serves outdoor enthusiasts with disabilities.

For Forsyth-area businesses, Turkey Shoot is always a highly anticipated event because of the money generated for the local economy. Tourism officials have estimated that the three-day event generates nearly half a million dollars in local revenue, a figure that includes food, lodging, gas and merchandise purchases.

Michael Waddell

On Aug. 20, NWTF National Spokesperson Michael Waddell will attend a "Gun Blast," at Turkey Shoot, the NWTF's annual three-day sporting clays competition.

As part of the festivities, the NWTF will host a “Gun Blast” at the Central Georgia Convention Complex in Forsyth, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. Outdoor television star Michael Waddell will join attendees as the NWTF gives away dozens of guns through door prizes, raffles and auctions.

This event is open to the public. To purchase tickets, contact Tammy Condrey at (800) THE-NWTF or tcondrey@nwtf.net.

While spots to participate in the 2010 Turkey Shoot are limited, spaces are still available. Registration is first come, first served, and registration forms are available at www.nwtf.org/shoot.html.

The NWTF is a nonprofit conservation organization that works daily to further its mission of conserving the wild turkey and preserving our hunting heritage.

Through dynamic partnerships with state, federal and provincial wildlife agencies, the NWTF and its members have helped restore wild turkey populations across the country, spending more than $306 million to conserve 14 million acres of habitat for all types of wildlife.

The Federation works to increase interest in the outdoors by bringing new hunters and conservationists into the fold through outdoor education events and its outreach programs – Women in the Outdoors, Wheelin’ Sportsmen, JAKES and Xtreme JAKES.
