Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- Apparently, things are going so well in the Middle East that the State Department now feels it can turn its attention to banning the lawful possession of firearms by American citizens.

In a little-noticed decision in March, the Obama administration reversed an earlier decision and moved to block the importation of 857,470 lawful M1 semi-automatics which were being sold by South Korea in an effort to raise money for its military. According to Hillary Clinton’s State Department, this action was taken because the M1′s “could potentially be exploited… for illicit purposes.”

Even worse, a spokesman for the State Department left the impression that the valuable historic relics could even be melted down, as Clinton’s husband did during his administration. Suffice it to say that this is just another reiteration of the same anti-gun political theater. And the cheers coming from anti-gunners like Dennis Henigan of the Brady Campaign are ample proof of that.

Possession of these guns by Americans is lawful. They are antiques of historical interest, particularly for those who, unlike Clinton and her husband, served this country honorably in America’s foreign wars. And anyone wishing to acquire one would have to go through an Instant Background Check as they would for all other firearms purchases.

If any American, going into the November elections, had any doubt that Barack Obama and the Democratic Party leaders hate guns and have contempt for the Second Amendment, this is proof.

Reps. John Boozman and Paul Broun are submitting a letter to State Department Secretary Hillary Clinton — demanding that this unlawful decision be reversed.

And we are working with several legislators to offer an amendment on the next available legislative vehicle which would prohibit the administration from blocking the importation – or even the destruction – of these firearms. Please see the ACTION item and pre-written letter below.

Have you recently renewed your GOA membership?

If you haven’t renewed your membership lately, then there’s a lot of information that you could be missing. In our newsletters, GOA takes on recent UN efforts to impose global gun control and has provided its members with postcards to inundate their Senators in opposition to any arms control treaties that would infringe upon our gun rights.

In fact, current members should be expecting another update on UN gun control efforts that will be arriving in their mailboxes soon. We can’t fight all our battles through email and that’s why we need you to be a member of Gun Owners of America.

You can go to http://gunowners.org/ordergoamem.htm and join Gun Owners of America for the cost of a box of ammunition. Get your friends and family to sign up as well. You’ll be glad you did!

ACTION: Write your Representative and urge him or her to cosign the Boozman/Broun letter which demands that the unlawful decision against the M1s be reversed. You can go to the Gun Owners Legislative Action Center at http://gunowners.org/activism.htm to send your Representative the pre-written e-mail message below.

—– Pre-written letter —–

Dear Representative:

Please stand up for the Second Amendment in opposition to the Obama administration’s anti-gun efforts to block the importation of — or even destroy — over 850,000 legal, historic M1 semi-automatic firearms.

Reps. John Boozman and Paul Broun are submitting a letter to State Department Secretary Hillary Clinton protesting this unlawful action.

I urge you in the strongest terms to cosign that letter with them. You can contact either Boozman’s or Broun’s office to get a copy of the letter and to indicate your desire to add your name to this effort.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

    1. Obama is worried that Americans will arm themselves when the U.S. declares bankruptcy and he imposes martial law.

    2. I believe Obama wants to erase pride in our firearms history and traditions, which the M1 represents very well.
More government abuse and beat downs for Americans to come.

    3. Is the $5000 donation that the nra sent reid an endorsement?? or does it depends upon what it is.? I think maybe cox-la pierre-and piccone have been in the swamp too long. If you like harry reid-joing the nra!! Maybe their next test balloon will be boxer and paloser-all they have to do is be pro gun-their character does not count-it’s your $$$$. Throw $20,000 to the big “o” and you can stay in the Lincoln bedroom. Shame on the NRA.

    4. Have you noticed that a huge quantity of brand new SKS’s have flooded the market, as not seen in thirty years. Where do you think those SKS’s were imported from? China? For sure. Importing the M1 Garands from South Korea would infringe on China’s ability to sell their SKS’s to the American public. This issue has nothing to do with the American public arming themselves, it is purely economic.

      Just more of the same…..COMMUNISM!
      IT WON’T BE LONG NOW.

    7. To melt these icons of American military history down would be a sin. As far as being a danger One can go to his local gun shop or even a Military PX that sells firearms and purchase any number of makes of Semi autos that the gun banners love to label assault rifles. Shows their total ignorance in that they have no concept of what an assault weapon is but are fast to affix the name to anything that fits their fancy. I want one of these M1 Garands. It would make a great concealed weapon. Like the single shot Barrett .50 that can bring down an airliner?

Can these people get a clue anywhere? “could potentially be exploited… for illicit purposes.” What the hell? What gang-banger is going to tote around a 9 lb battle rifle that only holds 8 rounds? I’ve fired an M1. It rings your bell after about 4 rounds. I have to stop to clear the fog out of my eyes!! Drug dealers in Mexico can buy true full-auto assault rifles on the black market for 1/8th of what these M1′s will retail for. Maybe we can all chip in so the Obama administration can buy a clue.

    9. THESE WEAPONS COULD BE PURCHASED BY THE GOVERNMENT , TURNED OVER TO THE ..”CIVILIAN MARKMANSHIP PROGRAM (CMP) THAT WOULD EXAMINE , DISASSEMBLE , REPAIR , CLEAN , REASSEMBLETHE WEAPONS FOR SALE MARK THEM AS EITHER FAIR, GOOD , OR TOP QUALITY AND SELL TO THE PUBLIC AS LOMD AS THE BUYING MEMBEMBER BELONGED TO A CARD CARRING MEMBER OF AN ASSO. STATE MEMBERSHIP TO THE CMP ORGANIZATION.
THE OTHER RIFLE’S WOULD BE USED FOR SPARE PARTS THAT WOULD BE SOLD UNDER THE SAME CONDITIONS ! NONE WOULD BE WASTED OR BE SUBJECTED TO A MELT DOWN S CLINTON WANT’S ANS OBAMB APPROVES OF !

On a purely economic basis this refusal to alllow the M1′s to be sold in USA is untenable and grossly unfair to our citizens. Taking into account the cost that M1s sell for in the average gunshop, plus transfer fees, sales taxes, etc.,
(and adding the original manufacturing cost of these rifles to the taxpayer@ approx $30 each) the loss to the USA
of blocking this arrangement is around $370,000,000,
less S&H of course. Figure it out.
Of course American gun manufacturers may (behind the scenes) support this move by the Pres. because they could lose sales opportunities for their own products. I hope not!
