Federal Premium Ammunition Sponsors National 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Workshop for 32nd Consecutive Year
ANOKA, Minn. --(Ammoland.com)- Federal Premium Ammunition has been supporting 4-H and the Shooting Sports program for 77 years.
4-H encourages outdoor conservation efforts and wildlife management in youth through many camps and outdoor workshops. The Shooting Sports program is a “train the trainers” program that enables nationally-certified instructors to go on and host statewide shooting sports certification courses. Certification disciplines include: archery, rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader, pistol, and coordinator or hunting skills.
Federal Premium Ammunition helps sponsor the 2011 National 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Workshop May 15-20 in Madrid, Iowa. Volunteer shooting sports instructors attend this workshop to gain 4-H Shooting Sports instructor certification. Federal donates the ammunition used by instructors during the workshop, and also sponsors many 4-H state training programs.
Strong Bond with 4-H
The 2011 National 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Workshop marks 32 consecutive years of support from Federal. Federal Premium Ammunition began its support of the 4-H Shooting Sports Program in 1979 and helped launch the program. The company has also been supporting 4-H conservation efforts since 1934. This 77-year bond signifies the strength of the relationship between Federal and 4-H.
“The 4-H program has a proven track record as a youth development organization,” said Federal Conservation Manager Ryan Bronson. “The Shooting Sports Program is reaching a whole new generation to help recruit and train safe and thoughtful shooters, hunters and conservationists.”
Training for Teachers
4-H has 14,000 certified volunteer shooting sports leaders nationally. Those leaders go on to teach more than 100,000 youth and 300,000 total participants in the 4-H program each year.
Instructors will be shooting ammunition donated by Federal during the National Training Workshop. Nearly 4,000 volunteer 4-H shooting sports instructors from 115 programs were certified in 2010.
Instructors at the workshop will gain national certification in many 4-H Shooting Sports disciplines, including: archery, rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader, pistol, and coordinator or hunting skills. Certified instructors also teach volunteer instructors in their own state.
Recruitment and training of certified instructors at the national and state level is extremely important. The number of certified instructors in each state is often the limiting factor for youth participation in 4-H Shooting Sports programs.
Illinois’ first year of having a 4-H Shooting Sports program was in 2010. In its inaugural year, the program certified 188 instructors at four training sessions. Those instructors went on to teach more than 800 youth. Enrollments are expected to be even greater this year.
Working to Educate our Youth
In 4-H Safety and Education in Shooting Sports (SESS) youth work with trained adult volunteers to learn safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment, including sound decision-making, self-discipline and concentration. The program also encourages youth to develop an understanding of natural resources and environmental stewardship through participation in the shooting sports.
“We are training volunteer instructors to work with kids to develop skills for their future—because shooting sports are lifelong activities,” said Brian Whaley, who coordinates the program. “4-H shooting sports bring together youth and trained adults and emphasize positive youth development through building shooting, wildlife, conservation and outdoor skills.”
