BELLEVUE, WA – -(Ammoland.com)- Widespread rioting, arson and looting across London clearly demonstrates the need in any civilized society for the right to personal protection and the tools to make it possible, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

Rioting that reportedly began over the police shooting of a man over the weekend has now exploded into anarchy, leaving British citizens stunned and fearful. People have been forced to flee from their homes.

CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb noted that in Great Britain, where firearms are so strictly regulated that relatively few people own them legally, and self-defense is treated like a criminal offense, citizens are literally at the mercy of the mob.

“One wonders if the thugs now terrorizing British citizens would behave better if they thought their next intended victim might be armed and willing to fight back,” Gottlieb observed. “How would these rioters fare if citizens were able to defend their homes and businesses?”

Gottlieb, co-author of America Fights Back: Armed Self-Defense in a Violent Age, noted that the riots suggest far more is at work than anger over a shooting.

“The Second Amendment has provided American citizens with the means, and the tools, to protect themselves, their families and their property,” he observed. “Rather than flee from their homes as is now happening in some London neighborhoods, people should be able to defend what is theirs rather than surrender the streets to a mob.

“Evidently,” Gottlieb added, “Americans understand that. According to data from the National Shooting Sports Foundation, people in this country – despite the economy – are buying increasing numbers of firearms. There was an 8.3 percent rise in the number of background checks with the National Instant Check System in July over the same month last year. This has been going on now for 14 straight months, according to the data.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the innocent citizens of London,” he concluded. “Anarchy is always easier when people lack the means to protect their homes and neighborhoods.”

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of the nation’s premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States. To papaeagle911: No, I'm afraid your comment "The Right to bear arms does NOT exist in GB today. Your laberal politicians took that right away years ago" is nothing short of an outright LIE.

The Bill of Rights Act 1689 defines the right to bear arms and because the Act has never been repealed nor amended, it's still current.

"If anything the rioting in England further demonstrates why modern societies should not be armed. If they were, the consequences would be far worse."

It's not worse in Switzerland, and they're armed to the teeth.

Remember, Adm. Yamamoto stated invading the US was impossible; because there was a gun behind every blade of grss. (paraphrased)

Rollo – The Right to bear arms does NOT exist in GB today. Your laberal politicians took that right away years ago and the poor decent people of your country are now suffering the consequesces. You completely missed the point that the best way to defend against your person or property being harmed is to shoot the attacker BEFORE they can throw the molotov cocktail. I see the news films of the riots and I am flabergasted that there aren't police snipers on the roof tops picking off the rioters and looters as they try to turn over a vehicle… Read more »

Well having guns helped save the property of store owners who had them in the LA Riots of '92, a SHTF scenario when it happened! And the incidents in places like DC and Chicago are BECAUSE of tight gun laws, NOT liberal gun laws….

Several things here: The right to bear arms has existed at law in the UK from 1689 with the Bill of Rights Act; that's 87 years before the existence of the United States. Secondly, if the firearms were more relaxed it would have the effect of placing more firearms into the hands of undesirable people. To have the rioters themselves armed would be utter mayhem. Thirdly, just how do you propose that a burning building is better served by firearms? What are you going to do, shoot the fire out? To suggest that a closely confined country like the UK… Read more »
