Florida – -(Ammoland.com)- On October 3rd, Florida Carry, Inc. filed a lawsuit against the University of North Florida (UNF) to end their unlawful ban on firearms and other defensive weapons in student’s vehicles.

Since 1987 the Florida Legislature has preempted firearms law and issued statewide licenses to carry for self-defense.

Since 1982 it has been legal for law abiding adults to keep a handgun in their glove-box or closed console without any licensing requirements.

Last Thursday, UNF President John Delaney joined Florida Carry Executive Director Sean Caranna and Attorney Eric Friday on WJCT radio’s “First Coast Connect”. During the debate on students being able to keep their lawfully possessed firearms in their cars, President Delaney conceded that adult students should be allowed to have a firearm in their car on the way to and from campus for self-defense. Despite this assertion, he then went on to attempt to defend the university’s ban. Mr. Delaney, an attorney himself, repeatedly attempted to dodge questions about the university’s anti-gun policies and would only speak about one aspect of the lawsuit.

The UNF president also took the opportunity to publicly announce that university visitors, faculty, and staff may keep their firearms in their cars. The university will now only enforce the ban against its students.

This leaves students’ lives at the mercy of potentially armed criminals while in largely unprotected campus parking and on the way to and from the campus and class.

  • This weekend, at the University of South Florida (USF), a student was robbed at gunpoint as he sat defenseless in his car in a university parking lot.
  • Also this weekend, two students were robbed at gunpoint on the Florida State (FSU) campus.
  • Late last week, three students walking in a group were defenseless when robbed on the UNF campus by a group of assailants armed with knives.

Once again the old adage holds true… “Only outlaws will have guns where gun possession is outlawed.” These gun control efforts have been proven to provide safe havens to criminals and be deadly to law abiding citizens.

Despite the recent spike in violent crime on campuses statewide, UNF and President Delaney have foregone the use of their regular lawyers and retained the services of the powerhouse law firm of Holland & Knight in their effort to keep college students unarmed.

Holland & Knight is one of the largest, and best politically connected, law firms in the nation. With its active presence in Florida and D.C. politics, Holland & Knight is a threat to its opponents inside and outside the courtroom. The firm’s PAC has spent millions on elections over the past few years. Holland & Knight is proud to be the “Go To” law firm for the Obama Whitehouse. These cases are expensive to file and fight, our opponents have nearly unlimited funds and will attempt to bury us in these lawsuits. Florida Carry Executive Director Sean Caranna recently stated:

“We must win, if they bury us in these cases I fear we will be burying more college students.”
