Remington Launches Opposition to Firearms Microstamping in New York

Ilion, NY –-(Ammoland.com)- Remington Arms Company, LLC. – with more than 1,000 employees in Ilion, N.Y., manufacturing rifles, shotguns, and pistols for our nation’s men and women in the military, law enforcement, hunters, shooters, and law-abiding citizens – voiced its strong opposition to firearms microstamping this week.

Microstamping is a patented process that micro-laser engraves the firearm’s make, model, and serial number on the tip of the gun’s firing pin so that, in theory, it imprints that information on discharged cartridge cases.

Three independent studies to examine the sole-sourced concept of firearms microstamping has concluded that the would-be technology should not be mandated.

In a letter sent to key New York legislators and Governor Cuomo (D), Remington at once dispelled misinformation that it micro stamps firearms for the military – it does not – and addressed some of the potential consequences of passing microstamping legislation in New York.

“Mandating firearms microstamping will restrict the ability of Remington to expand business in the Empire State. Worse yet, Remington could be forced to reconsider its commitment to the New York market altogether rather than spend the astronomical sums of money needed to completely reconfigure our manufacturing and assembly processes. This would directly impact law enforcement, firearms retailers and law-abiding consumers throughout New York– if not the entire country.”
