EDGEFIELD, S.C. --(Ammoland.com)- Youth in New Mexico will have more opportunities to hunt, thanks to a measure supported by the NWTF’s Families Afield program.
New Mexico became the 34th state to approve a Families Afield-style measure designed to open access to youth hunting.
Passed unanimously by the New Mexico State Game Commission, the measure, effective for the 2013-14 hunting season, will allow youth under 18 the opportunity to hunt with a licensed adult prior to completing the state’s hunter education course.
New Mexico youth still must complete the hunter education course within two years to obtain a full license and hunt without supervision.
“I am extremely excited about what this means for the future of hunting in New Mexico,” said New Mexico Department of Game and Fish director Jim Lane.
Applications will be available beginning Jan. 3, 2013 at www.wildlife.state.nm.us/index.htm.
The NWTF is a partner in the Families Afield program, which has resulted in 800,000 apprentice hunting licenses purchased since 2004 and an increase in the number of youth enrolled in hunter education classes.
