Prior to 1928, Germany was in a state that was almost civil war, with the Friekorps enforcing it’s own idea of victim disarmament. The official disarmament began in 1928 with the Wiemar Republic and registration of all firearms, followed by the seizure of firearms from political opponents by the Nazi party in 1933.

It was in 1938 that a new firearms law was signed that kept guns out of the hands of “enemies of the state” – which meant pretty much anyone who wasn’t a Party member. Kristalnacht followed 5 months later.
