Within hours of KSL’s announcement, founders launched the leading alternative.
Notes by Alan Murdock: Within days following the Sandy Hook mass shooting, KSL, an NBC affilliate covering the Utah valley suspended all private firearms listings. Previously KSL, owned by Deseret Media, itself owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was a primary outlet for private citizens selling or trading privately owned guns. Shortly after the announcement, a new site for private Utah gun sales was launched, the Utah Gun Exchange. On December 19, the Utah Gun Exchange issued the following announcement:
Salt Lake City, UT – Within hours of the announcement that KSL suspended private firearms sales through its classifieds service a new website was launched offering Utah citizens a place to buy and sell guns.
UtahGunExchange.com was launched to provide a cooperative marketplace for Utah residents to offer and find firearms for sale. Utah Gun Exchange will fill the void left by KSL’s decision to depart from Utah’s private firearms market Tuesday, said Exchange co-founder Nick Moyes.
“Our site’s launch gives KSL an easy out,” said Moyes. “We appreciate what they’ve done thus far and understand that offering Utahns the ability to buy and sell firearms may not be a stance they wish to champion anymore.”
Those wishing to use the website may list their firearms at no charge. Utah law allows for the private purchase of firearms between adults in Utah with no registration.
“We applaud Utah legislators for protecting the free market for this fundamental tool of self defense,” said Moyes. “We want to enable Utahns to take advantage of that market to better be able to deter any life-endangering threats they might face.”
