I wish more people would use the official version of the 2nd Amendment:
A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
This is the version ratified by the states and used by Congress in their official documents.
It has only two clauses, a dependent and an independent clause. (The orginal, as submitted to the states, is grammatically incorrect.) Any high school student should be able to tell you that the independent clause is "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." This clause is capable of standing on its own, and the dependent clause relies upon it (not the other way around), just as in real life the "militia" relies upon the arms borne by the people. The independent clause is merely an exposition of a reason for the guarantee of arms to the people. It does not suggest that the exposition is exhaustive (also, see 9th Amendment), nor can it be construed grammatically such that the independent clause relies in any way upon the dependent clause. (Of course, that's illogical and impossble by definition of the terms "dependent" an "independent.")
