This leads to two conclusions:
1. That magazine capacity is irrelevant. Although the shooter had 30 round mags, he did not empty all of them in an unbroken string of fire from each mag. The fact the he would shoot some rounds and then reload means that he could have accomplished the same amount of destruction with magazines of lesser capacity and without reloading any more often than he did.
2. That one of the alleged purposes of restricting magazine capacity – to force a shooter to reload more often to give his victims more opportunities to stop the assault – simply doesn’t work in real life. The Newtown shooter reloaded more often than was necessary, as if his magazines had less than their actual capacity, and it did not result in presenting an opportunity to disarm him.

An additional newly-revealed fact about Newtown is that the shooter’s long gun’s sling broke, at which time he switched to a handgun. Had he at any time been challenged by someone while he was doing a reload, he could have likewise transitioned to one of his handguns and continued to shoot, even though his long gun had run dry. (This may have also have been done in Aurora, as the shooter allegedly experienced a malfunction with one of his long guns and then transitioned to another.) The carrying of multiple firearms is a simple and effective way to overcome limits on magazine capacity, making such legislation simply useless to affect its avowed purpose of reducing the amount a violence that can be perpetrated by a deranged individual.
