Lummis Bill Gets State Department Out of the Gun Control Business

Bill reverses State Department decision to block the importation of historic, U.S.-made rifles from our ally South Korea.

Washington, DC –-(Ammoland.com)- On Tuesday U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo) introduced H.R. 2247, the Collectible Firearms Protection Act.

The bill reverses a State Department decision to block the importation of historic M1 Garand rifles and M1 carbines from South Korea.

Originally furnished by the United States to South Korea for military purposes over 50 years ago, the rifles are widely sought collectors’ items and among the most popular rifles in marksmanship competitions.

The rifles are perfectly legal to manufacture and sell in the United States and like all firearm imports would be subject to the federal rules and regulations governing retail firearm sales.

A similar sale from South Korea was approved during the Reagan Administration. The current State Department’s interference with the sale runs counter to the intent of Congress, which on two prior occasions amended the law to allow for this kind of transaction.

“It’s disappointing that legislation is even necessary to allow U.S. citizens to access perfectly legal and regulated firearms, in this case storied, U.S.-made rifles that are pieces of U.S. military history,” Rep. Lummis said.

“This is a political stunt on the part of the State Department, pure and simple, while denying the exercise of Second Amendment rights by law-abiding citizens, firearm collectors, and competitive marksman. The State Department has no business blocking domestic firearm ownership; they are way out of bounds and my legislation will put them back in their place.”

Congresswoman Lummis- I applaud your views and efforts on bringing our nations heritage, the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine rifles, back into the United States from South Korea. As a collector, firearms instructor and former law enforcement officer I believe that we should bring back the firearms of our heritage from South Korea. It is with taxpayers money that they were procured as with blood, sweat, tears and lives of our soldiers. We as United States citizens have paid the price. Bring these fine examples of American Democracy home where they so justly belong. Again, thank you for your efforts.… Read more »

How many more people do we have to kill to stop the amount of weapons in this country? As a military officer I left my weapons on post and am not a hunter.

There was a law passed, after Clinton had loads of US Military surplus rifles destroyed, at tax payer expense, that cost Millions. The law was passed to prevent any additional guns from destruction. Not only do we not have to Pay to have guns destroyed, but the CMP pays all costs to get the guns back and sells them, in order to fund marksmanship programs. This has also prevented the Fraud, Waste, and Abuse of Tax Dollars. Clinton had loads of M14 rifles destroyed, but a few years later, these surplus guns was needed for fighting in the Middle East… Read more »

I’m glad that she has introduced this bill, as Obama can’t stop our 2nd Amendment Rights. Obama must be a Racist, because gun control was brought up to keep the recently freed slaves from getting guns. Yes, this was done right after the Civil War, and the liberals must be Racists for wanting gun control. These are guns that could be sold by the CMP to support Youth firearms programs, and to get some historic and collectable U.S. Military rifles back into American hands. I have some CMP guns, Garands, 1903A3, M1 Carbine and 1903A3 drill rifles that I have… Read more »

Well, let’s see, they have the chance to re-import essentially lend-lease US made legal to own firearms and possibly make a few bucks. Nah, wouldn’t want that, it’s MUCH better in their view to have tax payers illegally pay for guns and give them to drug cartels (Fast & Furious – in case I wasn’t obvious enough)…………

Great job Congresswoman Lummis . I also would like to commend you on your sense of American rights . However , we also need to bring back the M-1911 45 ACP , another very historic American firearm , a handgun , also legal for sale and ownership in the United States as well as manufactured here .

Lol. I think BO is paranoid that whitey is out to get him. Get over it brother. Most white people don’t care about supposed race any more.

Unless they’re expecting to be on the receiving end of rounds fired by that firearm, there’s nothing for them to be worried about.
