A recent Pew Research Center study shows new gun owners cite protection as the primary reason they own a gun. The same study says 65% of women listed protection as their top priority.**
But what happens when homeowners have to use their gun in self-defense? Nearly 30 percent of all home burglaries are home invasions.*** What many gun owners don’t realize is they are at risk financially and emotionally if they use their firearm in self-defense during a home invasion. An effort to protect loved ones and property has led to the arrest of many homeowners. Some are sued by the home invaders; some have had to pay clean-up and burial costs. But many gun owners don’t know a gun is not the last line of defense.
The Second Defense Alliance is a new organization based in Cincinnati that offers members trying to protect their families a new layer of protection. Similar to AAA, membership benefits cover multiple aspects in the immediate aftermath of a home invasion shooting, including legal support, emergency financial support for medical bills, clean-up, bail bonds and funeral costs, and mental health counseling. Second Defense Alliance provides immediate “boots on the ground” support so families can begin the recovery process after a home-invasion shooting. SDA’s financial resources and services are designed to protect their members, their children and their home. In the event of a home invasion shooting, members have a script they can show police officers, members will have immediate access to an attorney and SDA will pay bail bond and emergency medical expenses.
