NRA – ILA

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)-  On May 12th, Governor Mark Dayton (D) publicly called for a vote by the state Legislature on politically motivated measures aimed at suppressing political speech by membership organizations such as the NRA.

Governor Dayton has strongly supported House File 1944 and Senate File 1915, which have been actively opposed by the NRA-ILA this session.

In fact, language similar to these measures was defeated last week when added as an amendment to another bill.

It is critical that you contact your state legislators today and urge them to oppose this misguided legislation.

If passed and enacted into law, HF 1944 and SF 1915 would impose broad and vague disclosure requirements – requirements that must be met just for issue advocacy organizations to participate in discussion on important issues of the day – that would go far beyond what the Supreme Court has ruled as constitutional and beyond the scope of federal regulations.  No organization or its members should have to submit to vague, broad government regulation to participate in or facilitate a meaningful discussion on the current issues or policies.  This is simply an effort by thin-skinned politicians to bully or control anyone who criticizes them for any reason.

As previously reported, HF 1944 and SF 1915 would require organizations like the NRA, who engage in political speech, to disclose the names of many of their donors, including those who pay membership dues.  The NRA strongly opposes this attempt to inhibit fundamental First Amendment rights by forcing disclosure of the names, addresses and contributions by those who affiliate themselves with groups that disseminate candidate information.

Your immediate action is needed – please contact your state Senator and Representative TODAY and demand their opposition to SF 1915 and HF 1944.
