A store that helps clients build their own guns is daring the federal agents to raid their stores for a second time.

The controversial build-it-yourself gun store Ares Armor has once again started selling a questionable piece of equipment without the approval of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

Its called an 80 percent lower polymer receiver and you can buy them on Amazon. Federal agents claim the plastic gun part actually qualifies as a fire arm and is therefore illegal to sell. Federal agents raided the four Ares Armor store locations in San Diego County in March and confiscated its supply of 80 percent lower receivers.

“I don’t care what they do, but if they have a problem with it they can come and see me,” said Dimitrios Karras, owner of Ares Armor.”

The business has been praised by gun rights advocates, but gun control activists say the business helps people build guns without having to go through a background check.

“We are in complete compliance of the 1968 Firearms Act, and unless the ATF changers the laws their is nothing they can do about it,” said Karras.

Fox 5 attempted to contact the ATF for comment but has not received a call back.

Just curious, has anyone tried to melt the insert away using some type of iron or torch?

It was silly for the ATF to involve themselves in this to begin with. The man hadn’t done anything illegal. I believe he was more than patient in waiting for the ATF get their act together by having a law to support their actions or leave this man alone. Also with our government wanting more and more control over its citizens, does it really make sense to have a firearm that has a serial number when the ATF can zero in on that registered number and confiscate it any time they want? It’s much better to have a firearm that… Read more »

MLB, What the ATFE was trying to say, was that they believed the company making the polymer lowers, were making the lower, and then filling the gap with more polymer, when in fact they made the biscuit, then formed the lower around it. Which means that they are one part. Their newest lower is actually 3 stages. Biscuit, hammer chamber, then the rest of the lower. It is a hunk of plastic, and not regulated by ATFE. The brady act, is what requires a background check, it does not require one by the FBI, but some States do not want… Read more »

I wish the owner of Ares the best of luck. The BATFE are ruthless. The people that work for that agency either like disarming American citizens or they couldn’t get law enforcement jobs anywhere else. If they really were trying to fight crime, they would spend their time working against organized crime vis a vis illegal firearms acquisitions…but they don’t…never forget Ruby Ridge and the Waco incident. (I don’t care about Koresh, but all those little kids…)

Where is it Illegal to build a firearm at home? Haven’t most ideas began at home? When is it Illegal to have a Thought Big brother is here.

Still a Citizen

I was just wondering when the ATF itself, began making the laws? I read all the time about “ATF Law” and how the ATF changes or enacts laws, determines “the rules” etc. Really? I thought that was congress’ job? As for the owner of ARES ARMOR, you go dude! And watch out, now that you’ve “challenged” them, I’m sure you’ll get a Cliven Bundy type response because they “feared for their safety because your comments were a threat”. OOOHHH…big bad boogie-man small business owner you are…

F the ATF. I will no longer play by their unconstitutional rules. Eat shat ATF!

All citizens in states where it’s legal can make their own weapons that are otherwise legal to own. 80% finished receivers have always been legal. No transfer on finished home made weapons. I’ll go to Ares now and give them some business, buy a few paperweights with a new jig for making my own AR without a background check.

DavebinAZ

It is not illegal. Not even a little. We can make our own weapons PERIOD. If 80% finished it’s a paperweight. Ok, make it 70% then. PEOPLE CAN MAKE THEIR OWN WEAPONS NOT FOR TRANSFER TO OTHERS.

steven

i wana b a atf man then i can get all 80 percent lowers i want at no cost. lol

The ATF is a criminal organization….and needs to be abolished.

THEIR? Nice job. Must be a professional typing this up. Or did he really say “THEIR” Wow. Pretty damned sad effort THERE……

Joe

Background checks do nothing to stop crime.

Chgo Dave

Never back down…all of us are watching and stand with you !

MLB: Those receivers are from a different manufacturer, Polymer80. They revamped their receivers just recently to remove any argument from the ATF over the differently-colored fire-control pocket.

vet4freedom

f**k the ATF and OBOZO

sk1951

If it is a fire arm…what kind? Lets see it fire something? Stupid…

Looks like he removed the white ‘insert’ about which the remaining plastic was molded. I read the original ATF letter that said it was two-parts and therefore a receiver with an insert. Looks like the new 80% rcvr is molded all at once. I give this guy major credit. As long as they don’t try to scare him, he looks to be in full compliance and fully legal…

HappyClinger

Where in the US Contitution or Bill of Rights or any other amendments does it say that gun purchases require a background check?

RDNK

Always pay with cash for 80% lowers.Ares Armor needs to be careful what they ask for and I emailed them and told them that. There is nothing the ATF like more than to hassle legal gun shops. They think that because they have ATF badge they can intimidate people,…NOT !

Fed Up

If I lived there, I’d buy a bunch of these with cash.

Mr Stoner said “There is an exception in federal firearms laws that allows someone to build their own firearm, without requiring it to have a serial number, as long as they never sell it.” I believe Mr. Stoner is mistaken about the need for a serial number. As I recall the federal regulations on making your one firearm a year it did require a serial number, but you did not have to report it to anyone. A further consideration is that an unserialized firearm, under most State Law is considered altered or stolen and subject to at best forfeiture. I… Read more »
