Body Armor Choices for Serious Preppers

USA - -(Ammoland.com)- The first question that you need to ask yourself as a prepper, is whether or not you need body armor.

Surely, there are some who believe that body armor won’t help as flexibility is something that can and should, by no means, be jeopardized.

Though this thought is one that does have substance to it, it’s not wholly true. Food and protection are two of the main things that preppers need to have on hand and body armor falls into the category of protection.

In a SHTF situation, the likelihood that guns and other harmful and potentially deadly weapons will be involved is high and unless you’ve got skin made of Kevlar, body armor is a necessity.

Covert or Overt
Upon realizing that body armor is a must, deciding whether covert or overt gear should be the one chosen is something that needs to be done. Yes, it can’t hurt to have both a covert and overt vest, however, because everyone’s not made of gold, a decision between the two needs to be made.

Overt body armor is worn above clothing and is available in higher levels of protection. These are the types of vests you’ll see used in combat. For preppers, an overt vest is not a necessity, specifically due to the fact that it’s heavier and is more likely to restrict movement.

On the other hand, covert body armor, which is worn underneath clothing, is the ideal choice for preppers.

These vests are typically lighter and more comfortable than overt gear. Rather than wearing a piece that is not only uncomfortable but weight bearing, preppers should opt for a piece that can be worn day in and day out without feeling irritated.

In the face of a threat, there is no time to waste. You can’t just tell the enemy to hold on while you up your level of protection to prepare yourself for the weapons he/she may unleash.

Many covert vests incorporate cotton which means that no irritation is caused when worn directly on the skin.

One of the most important features of a covert vest is its concealability. Overt vests may instigate an attack as perpetrators can easily spot you as an enemy. However, with a covert vest, you’ll be able to offer yourself a high degree of anonymity, and thus, prevent yourself from being an immediate target.

On the other hand, if you are spotted as a threat or are being attacked for your resources, your body will be prepared by means of your protective gear.

When on the go in covert body armor, you, as a prepper, will not only feel comfortable but also confident in knowing that you’re adequately prepared for just about any harmful situation you may face.

Covert body armor with CoolMax should be considered by preppers. Especially in regions where temperatures can be unbearable, protective gear with CoolMax is the ideal option due to the fact that it keeps the wearer cooler in hot temperatures and warmer in colder temperatures.

Level
Due to being lightweight, a Level II covert vest is a great option for a prepper. The need for flexibility and quick movement won’t be compromised when wearing a Level II covert vest. Level II offers protection against lower power rounds of ammunition including those of hand guns as well as spikes, knives and other sharp objects.

How it fits
The way in which a vest fits is directly related to the level of protection it will provide. A vest that is too tight, or too short will limit movement and therefore not be as effective as it needs to be.

The same is true for a vest that is too large. Before purchasing body armor, proper measurements need to be taken. It’s important to keep in mind that the purpose of body armor is to protect the vital organs.

The heart, lungs and kidney need to stay out of harms way, and thus, it’s important to make certain that the vest is long enough to cover the organs in the lower region of the body, but not too long to restrict movement.

Ideally, body armor should stop slightly above the belly button.

Female or Male
As a female, there is no reason to opt for body armor designed for men as suggested by SafeGuard Armor. Though in previous years, there were limited options, this is not the case in today’s day and age.

Vests designed for females take the bust region as well as the slimmer waist lines into consideration, and thus, are able to offer more protection than the loose fit that is common when a female opts for a vest designed for men.

There are some pretty small plate carriers on the market today that hold a 10″x12″ ceramic plate in Level III or IV. That may add 15 pounds, plus whatever you attach to it, but it won’t hinder your movement.

Well, body armor can reduce body’s flexibility only for untrained preppers. Once you are an experienced campaigner, your armor is a grace!
