Boston, MA --(Ammoland.com)- Residents of Boston do not need shotguns or rifles, according to Boston Police Commissioner William Evans.

Boston’s top cop made that statement Wednesday on Boston Public Radio in response to Massachusetts state senator Stan Rosenberg’s position that there are already “sufficient controls” on long guns at the federal level, giving no need for new state laws that grant police additional powers to deny ownership to citizens.

According to WGBH, Evans responded:

I don’t agree with that. Having long guns–rifles and shotguns–especially here in the city of Boston. I think we should have, as the local authority, some say in the matter. [And] the federal [government] doesn’t really allow us to have the discretion that we want in these particular cases.

…For the most part, nobody in the city needs a shotgun. Nobody needs a rifle.

Police have been urging lawmakers in Boston to restore a provision to a gun bill allowing them to deny someone a license to own a rifle or shotgun even if the person passes a background check.

The Massachusetts House voted to give police those powers, but the senate later stripped that section out of the bill. Lawmakers are now expected to attend a conference committee, where the dispute could kill the bill altogether

    1. What a idiot this ” So Called Police Commissioner” is. I’m a Law Enforcement Officer and when it comes to ” MY GUNS” nobody is going to tell me what i can own, where i want to take them, nor where i reside to have them. Also i don’t need a permit to carry, i can in all 50 state, ( LEO safety act of 2004 ) It makes me sick of what’s going on in our country about guns. I guess just some people believe they are above the law and can do whatever they want,,,wake up LEO

    2. And, where exactly does Fire Marshall Bill think that he gets the “authority” to tell anyone what they can own and how they can defend themselves??!!!! Did this moron even bother to read the Constitution, before swearing an oath to it??? Seems to me that Boston is where Americans were told to cower in their own homes and wait for men with guns to come around and search for terror suspects, following the Boston Marathon Bombing. If the Tsarnaevs had shown up at my house, they would have suffered a severe case of buckshot infection. We need to end these leftist utopian pipe dreams of a perfect “gun free” society. Criminals are not following current laws and will ignore any future laws…………..PERIOD!!!

    3. Another worthless bureaucrat trying to make a change. Looks like too much radiation or anorexia has effected his faculties.

    4. It appears that this Barney Fife wannabe has some twisted ideas.

We have become a country where common sense is an uncommon virtue — a museum piece. No one “needs” a Ferrari that can travel at 120mph. No one “needs” toasters with four slots. And no one “needs” a 70 inch Television. IT’S A MATTER OF WANTING SOMETHING AND WILLING TO PAY FOR IT.

Does John Kerry “Need” a yacht? He could just stay home and watch his shows on his iPhone.

Mr. Justice Hugo Black stated on a CBS interview that he lamented that we have become a nation where people believe that what they don’t like should be banned — and what they DO like should become mandatory for everyone.

Sooner than later, EVERYTHING will be banned by order of some timid mouse of a police official. After all, fast cars could be used for a speedy get-away after you rob the bank with a shotgun or rifle. And a yacht (usually owned by – horrors – a rich person) can carry you to international waters after commiting your crimes where you can life safely.

Every male in my family (since we LEGALLY immigrated) has fought for, bled for, or died for this nation that has now abandoned the ideal of self sufficiency to settle for the degenerate willingness to allow small men with big titles to ban everything.

Remember that a “liberal” is just a person haunted by the terror that somewhere someone might be enjoying life the wrong way.

    5. Of course you still need long guns in Boston. They still burn witches, even in Boston, citizens cannot make up their minds whether or not to join the U. S. They are still considering staying loyal to King George and most of them are drunks from my experiences while I had to be in that lousy city…Oh, and in the Boston Commons, keep an eye out for fornicators doing it in plain sight and completely naked. True! I have seen such behavior..This cop looks like a product of such a coupling actually!!!

    6. Oh, how far has Boston fallen! From the days of old, when that once great city was a hotbed of revolutionaries willing to give their lives, fortunes, and swear on their “sacred honor” to defend their city and its inhabitants, against those who would disarm them, or force them to humble themselves before an oppressive government, they have BECOME that oppressive government. Oh how Boston has changed in little more than 200 years! Today her citizens should be ashamed to cower beneath their beds, “sheltering in place,” at the orders of their overlords, when once they would have taken the fight to their enemies and taught them that “We the People,” citizens of a proud and free nation, are not afraid, but willing, and able, to fight for our liberty. Well, the rest of us hope your self-wrought chains of slavery will sit lightly on you, citizens of Boston, and let posterity not reflect that you were once counted among our brotherhood of free men.

    7. @PA Constable since when does the PA Constabulary require annual weapon proficiency exams to carry a weapon? The LEO weapon act of 2004 is for officers from jurisdictions that require annual proficiency exams and can prove they passed the exam to carry nationally. When I left PA many years ago atleast the constabulary did not require such exams therefore is a participant in the bill’s blanket authority. Things might have changed Dr Dave

    8. I think if the Commissioner looks back into the Boston law books, he will find that there is still a law on the books that says it is illegal for anyone to cross the Boston Commons WITHOUT a shotgun. (historical trivia really puts a wrench in the works occasionally, huh?)

    9. Does anyone even take this guy seriously? I can’t imagine sitting across the table from him and not having problems taking him seriously.

His attitude about private firearm ownership is becoming more and more outdated, as the supreme court continues to return the Second amendment to it’s full meaning.

Sounds like he’s, desperately, trying to remain relevant.

    10. Ask this question. Will every officer, in every city, clean out their home of guns? Hell no they won’t. This is
another bullshit liberal telling free Americans to do as I say, not as I do. Here is what I have to say to this
issue, and Boston Police Commissioner William Evans. Kiss my ass, and stop stepping on, and disrespecting , the Constitution of the United States. I’m sure Russia has a job for you if you ask.
