Winchester Deadly Passion

USA (Ammoland.Com) —How do you use decoys to bring in numerous whitetails within bow range in South Dakota? Melissa Bachman shows how on this week’s Winchester Deadly Passion. Using rattling, grunting and decoys, Bachman successfully brings in close to 30 deer to her treestands and ground blinds for a rut bow hunt like nothing she’s ever encountered.

“Sure South Dakota is known as the pheasant capital of the world, but if all you’ve done is that, you are missing out on some giant whitetails,” said Bachman. With a full season whitetail archery membership at Warne Ranches, Bachman is on a self-guided deer hunt in mid-November. She quickly starts pattering the bucks’ movements and continues to adapt by setting up new stands daily to maximize her hunting strategies.  “The rut was on so we just needed to get the bucks attention by rattling and grunting.  The entire area was covered in sunflower fields and the deer couldn’t see what was going on.  So I used that audio to bring them in and then gave them a visual with the decoy to seal the deal,” she commented.

Within 30 minutes Bachman had a nice 8-point check out her decoy. “I’ve never seen a deer snort-wheeze at a decoy. He was completely fooled,” she said. But she passes on that one as he needed another years’ growth to fully mature. Hoping she didn’t make a mistake, Bachman continues her decoy strategy.

“When you are sitting there and you have a buck, I don’t care how big he is, come in to your decoy, it is an adrenaline rush. And I had it happen over and over and over again. It was amazing,” commented Bachman.
