Perhaps a metaphor of our future…
Wisconsin -(Ammoland.com)- I am not a science fiction person.
I honestly do not believe I had ever read any science fiction either until Red Moon by Benjamin Percy came out.
Now I do faithfully watch the Walking Dead series on AMC, but I have been advised by reliable sources that it is based on a true story… I had a thirty hour round trip drive to Alabama at the end of July. I enjoy listening to books on CD and left the selection up to the Colonel for this trip.
She had heard a review on socialist public radio and decided to check out Red Moon for our road trip. The book is about werewolves or Lycans as they are called.
I have never read books or seen any of the current genre of vampires and werewolves movies. I have seen the movie trailers for this genre, where beautiful, sexually desirable young adults are willing to suck the blood out of you as they profess their undying love for you, of course as they bleed you to death.
In the story the Lycans are sometimes normal people who can change into wolf-like creatures. According to the story line of the book it was my ancestors who unknowingly introduced the bloodborne pathogen to the world that cause’s people to become Lycans. My DNA is Sami.
In the old days Sami were known as Laplanders, the reindeer herders of the most northern parts of Scandinavia. Lap or Laplander is now considered a pejorative word and not politically correct to use. It would allegedly appear my Sami relatives thousands of years ago ate the brains of wolves they killed and ingested the Lycan pathogens that basically produced an entire mutated new human race…?
The history of Lycans and werewolves that prey on and terrorize “normal” humans has been molded and adapted into the folk lore of many cultures around the world. Percy took the Lycans and wove it into a modern day story that takes place around the world, but more importantly in the State of Oregon.
As I listened to the story on my drive south it was a little hard for me to follow, but very quickly I started to pay attention the way I watch the Walking Dead series.
I consider the Walking Dead great entertainment, but also I view that series as real world training films. This was how I adjusted my listening skills to Red Moon being read to me by the author–as training CDs.
In the book there are no defined lines as to who is bad and who is good. There are good Lycans who only want to get on with their daily lives as normal US citizens who work, go to school, get drunk, have sex and take care of their Lycan or non Lycan family members. There are also bad Lycans who kill and terrorize.
I got my copy of Red Moon by Benjamin Percy on Amazon here.
There are good “normal” humans (GNHs) who only want to get on with their lives and don’t have any real problems with Lycans, in fact many of their close family members may be Lycans. Some GNHs do not even know their own mothers are Lycans. And of course there are GNHs who are not really so good and are extremely cruel to Lycans. The symbolism is off the chart in this book.
A nation state in northern Finland has been set up for Lycans to immigrate to, sort of on the lines of Israel.
Good Lycans and bad Lycans prey on each other like Sunni and Shiite Muslins battle each other. Not so good humans prey on good Lycans in the manner of Nazi Germany preying on Jews and gypsies. The Pacific Northwest of the US is eventually shut down to GNHs and good Lycans, when bad Lycans go nuclear on Oregon. Electric power is lost to that region of the country and the world becomes a very dangerous place to live and maybe survive.
Again I say Red Moon is a great training aid for those who may want to read in the safety of their homes, just how hard it is to survive when power and water is cut off to millions of Americans. In the book, the US economy crashes and so goes the rest of the world’s economies.
When the rest of the world is tied to the US dollar what can you expect?
I am sure my Sami ancestors did not really eat infected wolf brains and give the world Lycans, but you have to wonder sometimes where all the werewolf stories originated from. Take the Lycans out of the equation and just add in the good and bad people in an economy that is pressing the edge of the envelope of disaster (read modern/current USA), and a crisis like Red Moon could happen without a single wolf bit or any howling at the moon.
Silver bullets may not be needed, but fresh ammo is always advised. A political full moon is coming to this nation, are you ready?
