Shelbyville, IL -(AmmoLand.com)- Instead of holding violent criminals accountable for the high cost of their crimes,  Board President Toni Preckwinkle wants to punish law-abiding gun owners with an outrageous ammunition tax.

Three years ago, the board passed a $25 tax on gun sales under the pretense that it would help to defray healthcare costs caused by violent criminals.  A proposed ammo tax failed at that time but now Preckwinkle is back to try again to punish law abiding gun owners for crimes they did not commit.

This is not an equal  tax on everyone.  It is specifically targeting law-abiding firearm owners. The only people who can legally purchase ammunition in IL must have a valid Firearm Owner Identification card, so the only people who will be taxed are the people who are NOT committing violent crimes.

The proposed tax will add 5 cents a round to the cost of centerfire ammo, over 20% increase in cost, not counting the regular sales tax.  A 1 cent per round for rimfire ammo means an increase of $5.00 a box for 500 .22 rimfire!  This is not just about revenue, it is an attack on the 2nd Amendment!

If you live in or shop in Cook County, contact the board members and oppose this unfair tax.

Certainly hope the the illinois firearm owners win this fight! But the reality is ‘they will never give” up. (in Wisconsin a bill was just proposed to make semi-automatics illegal!). I can assure my 17 legally purchased, legally used, and legally owned: will not be given up. Of course that is now the rallying cry for the democrats. With obama and hillary wanting Austraila’s gun confiscation laws implemented here, a fight of EPIC proportions is on the horizon. So, gunowners keep up the fight; no matter how small or trivial it seems to be. Buy all you can now; and… Read more »

This has been a gleam in the eye of the Social Democrats for at least 10 years I can remember. Originally, a US Congressman floated the idea of a $1 tax on each bullet. They do it for shock value, repeat it later in another state for 5o cents. Then, eventually, a city or county pushes something like this through when they find an area with enough clueless, KoolAid drinking, apathetic sheep.

That’s what I was going to say. New Jersey has an ammo tax. I have never paid a penny. I do most of my shooting in PA anyway.

Isn’t this close to the same situation that caused a revolution about 240 years ago? Taxation without representation. As a law abiding gun owner and not prone to causing harm to any other law abiding citizen I would derive no benefit whatsoever by paying health care costs to an individual who had been injured or killed by a criminal. Fortunately I don’t live where this tax would apply to me…at this time. The problem is these grossly unfair laws, once passed in one community, tend to spread like a malignant growth to other communities who’s representatives are under the delusion… Read more »

Go for it. Then we can tax any alcohol at $2.00 per ounce for increase healthcare costs by alcohol related items. Oh, then $5,000 more for every vehicle or motorcycle sold to cover accident related costs. Hey, it’s about control and money.

IL is a blue state, it should be a paradise according to the dems. I left IL 30 years a go and have never looked back.

What’s Prickwiggle’s phone number?

Looks like it will soon be worth a drive across the border to purchase ammo.
