NEWTOWN, Conn – -(Ammoland.com)- The New Jersey General Assembly Thursday held a hearing on smart gun legislation, ignoring its own rules regarding advance public notice.

The Assembly committee held the hearing and then voted on a straight party line to replace its current failed state “Smart Gun” mandate with another one.

The bill introduced by State Sen. Loretta Weinberg, sponsor of the original New Jersey mandate law, will repeal the original mandate and instead force firearms retailers to carry at least one model of an authorized-user technology equipped firearm in their inventory.

It is expected that the legislation will be voted on in the Assembly as early as Monday and then head to Gov. Chris Christie’s desk for his action.

Contrary to false claims made by some anti-gun groups, the firearms industry is not opposed to the development of this technology.

Our industry is opposed to legislation that would either mandate the use of this technology as a one-size-fits-all solution or that would require it to be placed in stores by state law as if that would create demand for it.

Please contact your NJ Assembly member and tell him or her that forcing retailers to carry a smart gun in their inventory is the wrong approach. If a market demand develops for smart guns, consumers will tell retailers that they want the product. Tell them that artificial markets cannot be created by state law and that responsible New Jersey gun owners know how to safely store their firearms when they are not in use.

There is a reason many call it The Peoples Republic of New Jersey.

Any mechanical device can and will be disassembled and modified.

Smart Guns are not the solution, safe storage is the best way to keep guns out of hands of children.

As for criminals, they are too stupid to use a smart gun.

Big Daddy, Great commentary. The sad part is our educational (indoctrination) system is already corrupted
Bandit, That’s why every collection should have a Revolver or two. never had a failure in over 50 years of use. As you can see I’m talking old school . nothing wrong with have a Vaquero or two around but the old police service revolver is just tough. That’s where real gun control comes into play. Practice so you can control where the bullet ends up.

If INTELLIGENCE was a requirement to be a politician or legislator in New Jersey, they would have no one in their governors office NOR in the New Jersey “General Assembly”; And probably a large load of empty local offices too.

Is it any surprise that governments are criminal?

We the “good” people are reticent to talk for fear of making waves. Folks the “good” people should be creating a maelstrom.

What would happen if the Secret Service was required to convert to ‘smart guns” and the FBI is required to convert to smart guns, when every LEO is forced to convert, will there be a backlash regarding the fitness of the technology? Reality – I am sure there will be an exemption for those in Law Enforcement who also will statistically never have to fire their weapon in defense of themselves or others, but their job by definition maintains that definite risk and I sure wouldn’t want to always be wondering if the “smart gun” was going to be a… Read more »

I have seen these so called smart guns, they are either very expensive or only come in .22 caliber. To force a person to have to buy one of these things is beyond stupid after a few shots they can lock up or the electronics get damaged, either way you bounce them they just are not that great, and kids can still get access to them. The only thing they ears thinking about is how manycriminals they can save by using tech. If theyforce the people to have to use it then the police should have to as well and… Read more »

The legislators have given Christie an easy ‘out’ if he forces the legislators to obey their own rules and a veto will do that.

How is it remotely legal to force a store to sell something? That’s ridiculous! That’s tyrannical!

I don’t understand why so many people of Jewish descent are for gun control, therefore gun confiscation and disarmament of the population. There’s a saying “never again”, the people of Israel live by those words the people of the USA have forgotten how Hitler rose to power. They forgot how the Jewish people were helpless because they had no way to fight back. Oh it can’t happen here, well keep on destroying the Constitution and it will happen here, it already is happening. Are these people hardcore socialists or communists? If they are I ask haven’t you seen observed that… Read more »

NJ’s continued disregard for the law, public notice and it’s voting residence is appalling.
