Washington, DC – -(Ammoland.com)- Remember a year ago – February 13, 2015, to be precise – when the Obama administration presented a convoluted rationale by which M855, the second most popular variety of ammunition used in the nation’s most popular rifle, was to be banned?
At the time, Obama’s White House spokesman said that banning M855 would be a “common sense step” about which “everyone should agree.” Banning the ammunition would mean “greater gun safety,” proclaimed the New York Times. Failure to ban it would be “untenable” and “preposterous,” pontificated the Washington Post. Or, as the Los Angeles Times put it, “another loss for public safety.”
They all said that the ban was necessary to protect law enforcement officers, as did the increasingly inconsequential Brady Campaign and Violence Policy Center.
How the proposed ban played out was chronicled extensively in NRA-ILA Grassroots Alerts from February 13 through March 13, 2015.
Suffice it to say now that the ban was opposed by law enforcement experts, 238 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, 53 U.S. senators, 80,000 Americans who submitted comments to ATF, and the NRA. And in the end, the ban was shelved. [Obama & gun banners lost.]
And the result? The same that followed gun control supporters’ prediction, during the 1970s and 1980s, that crime would rise unless handguns were banned. And the same prediction, beginning in 1987, when there were 10 Right-to-Carry (RTC) states, that RTC laws would cause crime to rise. And the same prediction, beginning in 1989, relative to banning some or all semi-automatic firearms and magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.
Since those predictions, the number of handguns Americans own has nearly quadrupled, the number of Right-to-Carry states has more than quadrupled, the numbers of semi-automatic firearms and their ammunition magazines have risen by even greater margins, and violent crime has fallen to a 44-year low.
And as for M855, well, when was the last time you heard anyone in the law enforcement field mention it?
Today, the anti-gunners’ worn-out “sky-is-falling” prediction centers around background checks for private transfers of firearms. Same degree of hyperbole. Same type of rhetoric. Same shameless use of distortion.
And the White House continues to act unilaterally to try to impose gun control on the U.S.
We’ve said it before, gun control advocates are counting on American voters to have short memories this November. If you don’t want more of the same, choose wisely and vote freedom first.

Does anyone remember Winchesters so-called recall of green tip ammo two or three years ago. When they finally got around to replacing the green tip ammo they gave us 55 grain FMJ in exchange. I have always suspected some kind of government collusion to request us to turn in the green tip, to either supply it to law enforcement or just get it away from as many owners as possible.

With the military moving towards lead free bullets and the wars winding down (in Obama’s mind), there will be surplus M855 available to the general population. The last thing Obama and the anti-gunners want is a source of inexpensive ammunition to be enjoyed by Americans. Therefore, they concocted a phony argument in an attempt to keep this ammunition from US. It’s no more complicated than this.
Has anybody tested this round on it’s penetrating body armor level 4?
Level 4 body armor stops up to .308 winchester/7.62 nato ball. . . Good level 4 armor does anyway.

I understand how you feel, but I disagree. In my humble, retired military opinion, that will be the time the REAL fight starts. And we’re not taking any Wacos or Ruby Ridges this time.
In November before committing your vote to a Democrat just ask yourself “How is the Democratic Party going to further restrict my Liberties and Rights?”
If you vote Democrat, you may as well hand over your first and second amendment rights and make room for refugees to get free housing in your neighborhood
I bought a 90 round box of those when I bought my first AR a little over 2 years ago.
Most inaccurate ammo I ever shot, never bought it again.
Even 55gr FMJ was better.
Geoff: What is the twist rate on your AR? Mine is 1/9 and handles it just fine with acceptable accuracy for what it is. You want match accuracy buy Match King ammo or better.

The Marine Corps told me to grab the weapon load the ammo get my sight alignment sight picture breathe properly and squeeze the trigger and hit the target ever since I’ve been shooting expert even with m855 ammo. The only problems we ever find it’s either the weapon or the shooter.

here is a little secret most don’t know… putting steel in the rounds is just “cheaper” to make the bullets than lead ! if you shoot a 223 fmj and a m855 at a 3/8 piece of cold rolled steel both will go right through it !
so why do you even need m855 ? when standard 223 does the same job ? with better accuracy !
You left out the twice the price.
Maybe because I WANT TO. Why are you even questioning the choice of law abiding citizens when the most lowly .223/5.56 round will slice through soft body armor as though it was not even there? This round, like all law-abiding firearms-owning citizens, is not and never has been an issue.
