MSSA’s flagship bill last session, the “Montana Ammunition Availability Act,” was SB 122 carried by Senator Matt Rosendale, passed by the Legislature, and signed into law by the Governor. It is now codified in the Montana Codes Annotated.

30-20-202. Legislative findings:
(1) In recognition that the people of Montana have reserved to themselves the individual right to bear arms in Article II, section 12, of the Montana constitution, the legislature finds that both this right and the firearms that the people possess are at serious risk if the people cannot obtain ammunition for firearms. An adequate source of ammunition is an indivisible and essential part of the right to bear arms. The people of Montana are totally dependent upon a very few manufacturers of smokeless propellant, small arms primers, and cartridge cases located in other states for small arms ammunition used in Montana.
(2) The legislature intends to encourage the manufacture of smokeless propellant, small arms primers, and cartridge cases within the borders of Montana to ensure availability of small arms ammunition for the people of Montana and to fully implement the right to bear arms that the people have reserved to themselves.
The MAAA provides significant tax breaks for any business that starts up in Montana to manufacture smokeless powder, small-arms primers, or cartridge brass, it provides defectless product liability protection for such products, and it offers access to all existing Montana economic development programs for any such business.
If you know of or hear of any entity intending or wishing to establish a business in Montana manufacturing ammunition components (does not apply to loaded ammunition), please let me know.

Taking the long view, this is a particularly wise effort. As big cities seize control and implement unwelcome agendas over protestations of small town and rural citizens, hostility is escalating. Although secession and civil war are highly unlikely, commercial Balkanization is a real possibility. We’re already seeing many political programs that function through businesses, e.g., Operation Choke Point or Fast and Furious. It’s not unlikely that businesses in one state might be pressured not to sell certain products to businesses in other states, and boycott those businesses too. I’d like to see the word “affordable” included in this description. Having a steady supply of ammunition is only beneficial if said ammunition can be purchased by the average Montanan. Newly produced ammo from within the state that costs $1, $2, $3+ per round won’t benefit most gun owning folks there, or anywhere for that matter.
Ammunition companies need to stay in business too, you know. If it is the state dumping ammo taxes, then yes, I agree. They need to get that under control, but i don;’t know of anywhere that a basic 9mm, .308 or other basic caliber ammo costs that much. .44Mag or .50 . . yeah, agreed.
So, maybe I am just not informed. but are you saying that ammo produced in Montana for sale in Montana is $1 to $3 a round?
