Reciprocity Bills Will Protect the Rights of Concealed Carriers

Springfield, VA -(AmmoLand.com)- Sources inside Congress have told GOA that they may soon be taking up a concealed carry reciprocity bill.

If enacted, this legislation would mean that your right to carry would no longer end at your state border.

It would mean we would be one step closer to enjoying the full protections of the Second Amendment, which says the right to keep and bear arms “shall not be infringed.”

To this end, Gun Owners of America is supporting H.R. 923 and S. 498 — legislation introduced by Rep. Marlin Stutzman (R-IN) and Senator John Cornyn (R-TX).

H.R. 923 and S. 498 are the best reciprocity bills in the Congress. Yes, there are similar bills, but they don’t protect citizens who travel from Constitutional Carry states.

As we reported last week, there are now ten Constitutional Carry states in the union — states that have passed laws which don’t require gun owners to get permission to exercise their constitutionally-protected rights or to be registered like sex offenders.

These states are Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Vermont, West Virginia, Wyoming and most of Montana. The Stutzman-Cornyn bills do not punish these states for being too pro-gun.

They do not require a gun owner from these states to get a concealed carry permit before carrying a firearm out of state.

Sadly, the other reciprocity bills in Congress would impose this restriction, forcing people to get registered through the permitting process before exercising their rights.

About Gun Owners of America (GOA):

Gun Owners of America (GOA) is a non-profit lobbying organization formed in 1975 to preserve and defend the Second Amendment rights of gun owners. GOA sees firearms ownership as a freedom issue. `The only no comprise gun lobby in Washington’ – Ron Paul.

I DO NOT support H.R. 923 or S. 498. Said bills do not help me. Instead they only help those that already have a CCW issued from their home state. I have an Arizona CCW which is good in thirty-something states, but NOT my home state of California. I live in Los Angeles County and the county Sheriff does not believe the Second Amendment is “good cause” to carry. So I can’t carry in California. I would rather support H.R.986 – Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2015 or H.R.402 – National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2015. Both of these bills… Read more »

Reciprocity is something I look forward to passing. But other laws must also change. Particularly the gun free school zone law which only recognizes a CCW/CCH issued by the state where the school is located. While revision of Title 18 922 (q) to recognize reciprocity, the right to self-defense needs to include lawful self-defense within a school zone falls under an exception to discharging a firearm. Of course repeal of the law would be best

This is wonderful news and exactly what’s needed. If we feel strongly about 2A, it’s time we as a country “put up or shut up”. Anything short of blanket respect for 2A is a compromise (at best) that nibbles away at any pretense of constitutional meaning. Bravo! Let’s all help this thing get through. Thanks!
