Rochester, New York – -(Ammoland.com)- My dad and I once killed two deer during a blizzard. The snow was up to our hips and in dragging those two deer out of the woods, I am surprised he didn’t have a heart attack then.

It was in this trek against the compacted white material (which some kid probably prayed for in order to cancel school) I was reminded of the painful reality of using a dull knife.

It was terrible.

With two winter fattened doe before us, we had to dress both with a dull blade. Instead of nice clean cuts I felt like a clumsy chef with bad motor skills. From that day forward I have been a stickler for having a sharp edge in the woods. While there are great knives on the market, this past season I chose to use blades from a company near my home.

Case knives are built in Bradford, PA. A beautiful little town on the boarder of New York and the Keystone State, the company employs many in the area and has built its reputation on quality blades for work in the kitchen to the field. Case is known for its thoughtful and handcrafted approach using only the best materials in their production.

Available in multiple handles and with various blade options, the Case Cutlery XX-Changer Lightweight Camo Knife became my go-to knife this fall. With four interchangeable blades you can carry one small pack and have a blade for each part of the skinning, deboning and butchering process (a Clip, Fillet, Saw and Drop Point). The entire knife itself weighs only 9.0oz and is only 5 inches when closed. The handle is a custom made Zytel Handle which adds to the strength and lightweight profile of the knife.

From the perspective of hunting in the mountains, every inch in my backpack is valuable. Regardless of hunting in the elk mountains or if I’m just carrying a tree stands up and over a few ridges, I love having the ability to have four knives in one in a lightweight option and not having to worry about carrying extra knives for each part of the deboning process.

While each individual blade is sharp and reliable, I appreciated the aggressive nature of the saw. Other knife blade saws I’ve used in the past always fill with fats and become stuck in the bone. With this Case knife edge the teeth of the blade are wide enough to cut effortlessly without becoming stuck.

The fillet blade I also have taken a particular liking to. While there are other knives the market with small blades for detail work and small cuts this blade is thin and study and I found it to hold an edge much longer than other thinner blades. After packaging a few deer this season, this blade made it easy to get each deer packaged with the least hassle.

Eventually, after three hours of work and pulling a few hundred pounds of meat through the snow up to the truck we were only half way done. To this day we still roll our eyes at the thought of having a dull knife. It’s one thing to talk about, another to experience a dull knife. Don’t let it happen to you.
