Reno, Nevada – -(AmmoLand.com)-Members of the American Custom Gunmakers Guild recently honored Frank Brownell, CEO of the gunsmith supply house bearing his name, with a specially built, custom rifle.

The group gave the gun in recognition of Brownells’ long time service to the industry and his unflinching support of the Guild and its programs. Famed gun writer and long-time Guild advocate, Tom Turpin presented the gun to Frank at the Guild’s show in Reno, Nevada.

“I’m absolutely stunned, thank you all,” said Brownell. “Guild members are truly the finest gunmakers anywhere and to be recognized by them is indeed a most special honor. It’s just so darn humbling when I see all the famous names involved with creating this gorgeous rifle.”

The idea for the project came from writer/Guild supporter Terry Wieland who donated the Mauser action which was already equipped with Blackburn bottom metal. As plans were made, the group decided that a peep sighted, classic stalking rifle would best exemplify their respect for their friend. Bill Dawtin, from Old World Walnut, donated the circassian walnut stock blank which was shaped, and inletted by Al Lind. Lind also applied a traditional, hand rubbed oil finish to the wood and did the final assembly of the components. Gary Goudy checkered the wrist and forend in a point pattern that matched the lines of the rifle. Dan Peterson fitted and chambered one of his own cut rifled barrels in 7×57. Lee Hegeland installed the NECG sights, three-position safety and trigger and also shaped the action. Sam Welch did the tasteful engraving in his unique scroll style. Pete Mazur did the final polishing and bluing of the metal. As a final touch, Dick Murray built one of his carefully fitted cases and split the cost with the Guild.

According to project instigator, Wieland, “I was talking with Tom Turpin one day and Frank’s name came up. We talked about all the help he had given everyone over the years, and I asked if anyone had ever done anything to show our appreciation, we couldn’t remember anything. I had the Mauser action, and Tom made some phone calls – and everyone he called said yes instantly when they were told who the rifle was for.”
