Geneseo, IL –-(AmmoLand.com)- Who could have imagined it? An idea sprung just a week ago has now gone viral on the Internet. On March 10th, ArmaLite President Mark Westrom came into the office and said we’re having a truckload sale.

He said if you buy a truckload of ArmaLite, you get to keep the truck. The trucks... and we have a parking lot full of them here in tiny Geneseo… are military M35A2’s, commonly known as a “duece and a half.”

But that wasn’t enough for the folks here at the factory. After our crack engineers figured out how many AR10 shipping boxes would fit in the back of a deuce, we took it a step further. We announced a “guess how many guns fit in a deuce and a half contest.” It’s along the lines of guessing how many jelly beans are in a jar. The prize for our contest is a complete upper of our new SPR Mod 1 Continuous Optics Platform (COP).

Gun Manufacturer’s Social Media Campaign Goes Viral

Washington, DC --(AmmoLand.com)- PETA, the organization known for publicity stunts, is at it again. This time it is in the wake of rumors that an Ocean Task Force established by the Obama Administration could threaten recreational fishing.

While there was almost an immediate response from the White House stating that was not the intention, this didn’t stop PETA from jumping on the band wagon.

In an interview with Fox News, Ryan Huling, a PETA spokesman, stated that fish suffer “the same as cats and dogs, and that if we wouldn’t put a hook through a dog’s mouth, we shouldn’t put one through a fish’s mouth.” Click above to see the complete video.

Bismarck, N.D.--(AmmoLand.com)- The announcement that the U.S. Department of Agriculture will offer a general Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) signup later in 2010 is good news for ducks and duck hunters, according to Delta Waterfowl Senior Vice President John Devney.

“CRP is a proven, time-tested voluntary program that provides numerous benefits to our land and waters, including grass nesting cover that each year produces hundreds of thousands of ducks for duck hunters across the U.S.,” said Devney.

“This is welcome news because we haven’t had a signup since 2006.”

Established in 1985, CRP pays farmers and ranchers to idle environmentally sensitive lands and plant them to grass and other cover types. The voluntary program currently has 31.1 million acres enrolled nationwide, down nearly 7 million acres in the last three years. In addition, the 2008 Farm Bill reduced the national CRP allotment from 39.2 million to 32 million acres, and the Obama administration has floated the idea of reducing the existing cap to 24 million.

“We need to keep CRP acreage at that 32-million cap, especially considering the millions of acres that were lost in the last farm bill,” said Devney said, noting that contracts on 4.4 million CRP acres nationwide expire on September 30th.

Despite the announcement of a new general signup, Devney says the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR), often called the nation’s duck factory, is slated to lose millions of CRP acres in the next several years because of expiring contracts.

For example, North Dakota currently has 2.7 million CRP acres, down from its historic high of 3.4 million in 2007. Devney says significant acreage losses could happen, and fast.

“Starting in 2010 and by the end of 2012, contracts on an additional 1.5 million acres are slated to expire in North Dakota,” he said. “That’s a lot of lost nesting cover for ducks and other ground-nesting birds. And that’s why the Prairie Pothole Region should be a national priority area for signup in 2010.”

According to research conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, CRP in the Prairie Pothole Region produces as many as 2 million incremental ducks each year to the fall flight. From 1992 to 1997, some duck species, according to the research, increased 46 percent, adding roughly 12 million birds to the migration.

In addition, Devney said he’s pleased with the USDA’s decision to increase acre allotments by 300,000 for three practices under continuous CRP to help bolster habitat for ducks, pheasants and quail. The allotment for Conservation Practice 37, also called the Duck Nesting Habitat Initiative, will increase by 50,000 acres for Prairie Pothole Region states, the majority of which going to the Dakotas.

“That’s welcome news, too,” he said.

ArmaLite President Mark Westrom Demonstrates the SPR Mod 1 Rail Sysytem

MISSOULA, Mont. --(AmmoLand.com)- In letters to legislators and newspapers across the West, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is calling out groups like Defenders of Wildlife, Western Wildlife Conservancy and others for their disingenuous use of data on wolves and elk.

The RMEF action was prompted by each group’s recent op-ed articles in the media, as well as testimony before Utah lawmakers by Western Wildlife Conservancy Executive Director Kirk Robinson. All cited RMEF statistics to argue that restored wolf populations have somehow translated to growing elk herds in the northern Rockies.

“The theory that wolves haven’t had a significant adverse impact on some elk populations is not accurate. We’ve become all too familiar with these groups’ tactic of cherry-picking select pieces of information to support their own agenda, even when it is misleading,” said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO. “We will not allow that claim to go unchallenged.”

RMEF population data, which come from state wildlife agencies, show that elk populations are expanding the most in areas of the northern Rockies where wolves are not present. However, where elk share habitat with wolves, such as the greater Yellowstone area, some elk populations are declining fast. In fact, since the mid-1990s introduction of gray wolves, the northern Yellowstone elk herd has dropped from about 17,000 to 7,100 animals—a 58 percent decline. Other localities in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming also are documenting precipitous downward trends.

Additionally, some research shows that elk remaining in areas of concentrated wolf populations are suffering nutrition loss, lower body weights and decreasing birth rates.

Allen said, “Every wildlife conservation agency, both state and federal, working at ground zero of wolf restoration—Idaho, Montana and Wyoming—has abundant data to demonstrate how undermanaged wolf populations can compromise local elk herds and local livestock production. There’s just no dispute, and emotion-over-science is not the way to professionally manage wildlife.”

RMEF continues to support state-regulated wolf management to include hunting and other viable methods. This position is supported by new reports of diseased wolf populations in the Yellowstone area.

“When wolves are too abundant, they’re more susceptible to diseases, just like all wildlife. The viruses and mange now spreading through wolf packs is another sign of way too many wolves,” said Allen. “Defenders of Wildlife would like to spin sick wolves as a reason to end hunting. But real conservationists know that diseased wildlife populations need better management. Hunting as a management tool delivers that, period.”

He added, “Remember, pro-wolf groups make their living by prolonging this conflict. There is no real incentive for them to admit that wolves are overly recovered. Fundraising is their major motive and they’ve built a goldmine by filing lawsuits and preaching that nature will find its own equilibrium between predators and prey if man would just leave it alone.

That’s a myth. The truth is that people are the most important part of the equation. This isn’t the Wild West anymore. People live here—actually quite a lot of us. So our land and resources must be managed. Wildlife must be managed. Radical spikes and dips in populations show that we should be doing it better. It’s not profitable for plaintiffs, but the rest of us would be better served if the conflict ended and conservation professionals were allowed to get on with their business of managing wildlife, including a well regulated hunting strategy.”

In 2009, RMEF got involved in the ongoing wolf litigation, supporting defendant agencies by filing legal briefs used in federal court to help delist wolves and proceed with hunting—

“facts conveniently ignored by groups who misuse our name, data and credibility to prolong the conflict. We stand for elk and other wildlife and what is happening right now is simply not good wildlife management,” said Allen.

Arizona - -(AmmoLand.com)- John McCain has gone out of his way to earn the ire of conservatives and gun owners in his 20-plus years as a U.S. Senator from Arizona.

Perhaps his crowning legislative achievement was so-called campaign finance reform, or the McCain-Feingold law. This law put the muzzle on organizations such as GOA, prohibiting any broadcast advertisements within 30 days of a primary election and 60 days of a general election that even mention the name of a candidate for federal office.

Not surprisingly, there is frequently a flurry of activity in Congress in the months right before an election, as politicians try to ram bills through at the end of a session. Forbidding criticism of sitting legislators during these crucial times (although media corporations were exempt) made McCain’s bill the perfect “Incumbent Protection” act.

McCain’s bill prohibited the most important form of speech the Founding Fathers meant to protect with the First Amendment — political speech — so it was welcome news when the Supreme Court recently repudiated much of the McCain bill as an assault on liberty.

But it should not come as a surprise that McCain does not want voters hear about what he’s up to in Washington, because the same person who holds the First Amendment in contempt would also like to run the Second Amendment through a shredder.

John McCain may have begun as a pro-gun legislator, but when he decided to become a gun control “maverick,” he went all out.

Since his conversion to a gun control advocate over the last ten years, McCain has favored a ban on small and inexpensive handguns and considered a ban on certain semi-automatic firearms (so-called assault weapons).

In what was his boldest move against American gun owners, however, McCain authored a bill to that could only have been designed to close down gun shows. In addition to regulating all private sales at gun shows, his bill would have placed onerous licensing requirements on gun show promoters and would essentially have registered the millions of people who attend gun shows. Under the burdens of the McCain bill, no promoter in the country would put on a gun show and, if they did, gun owners would likely not attend.

Thanks to McCain, the inaccurate and misleading phrase “gun show loophole” became a part of the anti-Second Amendment crowd’s lexicon.

The truth is, there is no gun show loophole; firearms transactions are conducted the same inside a gun show as they are anyplace else.

In 2000, McCain became a spokesman for a gun control organization (now defunct) called Americans for Gun Safety, a group that advocated licensing and registering all gun owners. The group ran radio and TV ads with McCain supporting ballot initiatives in Colorado and Oregon that would impose McCain’s favorite restrictions on gun shows.

These ads were a way for McCain to “stick it” to gun owners, after a gun show bill stalled in the Congress.

“I think that if the Congress won’t act, the least I can do is support the initiative in states where it’s on the ballot,” McCain said in an interview.

In 2001, the group ran advertisements in movie theaters featuring McCain urging people to keep their guns locked up “for the sake of the children.” In the ads, he greatly exaggerated the risks of children gaining access to firearms in the home, and at the same time completely ignored the danger of having guns locked away if they are needed to thwart a criminal attack.

After the 2001 terror attacks, when Gun Owners of America and tens of thousands of commercial airline pilots were pushing legislation to arm pilots as a defense against terrorism, McCain prepared an amendment that would have replaced “firearms” with “stun guns.” GOA pointed out at the time how stun guns would not be effective against the type of attacks that could occur in a cockpit.

John McCain may pretend to be pro-gun (especially in election years) but he has plunged his dagger deep into the backs of gun rights supporters. He may fancy himself as a “maverick” in shining armor, riding to rescue the American people, but all the while he has trampled the Bill of Rights underfoot.

Thankfully, this year gun owners have a choice. Former Rep. J.D. Hayworth, who was “A” rated by Gun Owners of America in his twelve years in the House of Representatives, is challenging McCain in the 2010 Republican primary.

J.D. respects the Constitution and understands that the Second Amendment was put there by the Founding Fathers to always ensure that the people would have the means to preserve their liberty.

During his time in the Congress, J.D. Hayworth did not vote one way in election years and another way when in nonelection years. J.D. consistently supported the Second Amendment, and that is just the type of leadership gun owners in Arizona will vote for in November.

The 45-minute presentation, which was given Feb. 2 at the Game and Fish Phoenix office, identifies the many successes and valuable programs achieved through the Heritage Fund and points out how elimination of the fund could have significant impacts on Arizona’s land use and growth that will be vital for the state’s economic recovery, as well as impacts on outdoor recreationists and the future well-being of the state’s wildlife.

In mid-January the Governor’s office released a budget plan that proposes to eliminate the department’s voter-approved Heritage Fund and redirect all Arizona State Lottery revenue to the state’s general fund. That proposal has been sent for consideration by the Legislature.

The department acknowledges the difficulties the state faces in addressing the budget situation. Arizona Game and Fish is a “business-model” agency that does not receive Arizona tax dollars. It is important that the customers who pay the bills in this “user pay, user benefit” model are informed and educated about the potential impacts to them that could result from a loss of Heritage funding.

Passed as an initiative in 1990 by an overwhelming 2-1 bipartisan ratio of Arizona voters, the Heritage Fund provides up to $10 million each year from lottery ticket sales for the conservation and protection of the state’s wildlife and natural areas. The Heritage Fund is one of the department’s significant funding sources, and it makes a difference in communities across Arizona and benefits all citizens.

At the start of 2010, he said, the industry remains strong — and that by working together as an industry in meeting the challenges that lay ahead, it will continue to thrive.

“I have to say that the state of the industry in 2010, at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century, is about as strong as I’ve seen it,” Sanetti said. “Working together, staving off the challenges as we take advantage of the many opportunities we have with millions of new firearms owners that have joined our ranks since we last met in Orlando, we will all, individually and collectively, make a difference.”

Sanetti attributed some of the industry’s success to the contributions of those in the business.

“All of you have contributed so much — not just because of your successful business efforts, but by your presence here, you’ve shown that you care deeply about our enterprise and our precious way of life. Your membership in the NSSF and your participation in this greatest annual industry gathering help us help you, by funding those programs that help us fulfill our mission — to promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports,” Sanetti said.

MILNESAND, N.M. -(Ammoland.com)- The popularity of the High Plains Prairie Chicken Festival reached an all-time high this year when all 100 spots for the April 16-18 event sold out in less than three weeks.

The festival celebrates the lesser prairie chicken and the Llano Estacado (staked plains) of eastern New Mexico. Participants gather in Milnesand in southeastern New Mexico to see prairie chickens perform their remarkable early morning courtship dances. Visitors also learn about the cultural and natural history of the southern Great Plains, take daily birding tours, and enjoy good food and western hospitality.

Attendance is limited to the first 100 participants who register and pay an entry fee of $95 per person. Registration is limited because of the sensitivity of the lesser prairie chicken during the breeding season.

This podcast has expanded my territory. I created the Black Man With A Gun persona/website in 1999 with the hopes that I could get around to talk to the hard to reach groups about the RKBA.

What I didn’t realize was the cost it would take. Pro-gun people aren’t rich with loads of money to throw around. And the folks, companies and organizations that do have that kind of money didn’t want to give it to the likes of me for whatever reason.

I borrowed money from a cousin and self published my book in hopes that it would take me to where I needed to go. And then I met the guy they call Murphy. Everything that could go wrong did. I found out that being a firearms instructor in a city is less appreciated than a crack dealer. I didn’t make any money to support my activism. I got notoriety for being an oddity but no money to support my entrepreneurial goal of self reliance.

I used a lot of family money to pay for my activism. I almost lost my house, my wife and my job. That was the nineties for me. I survived bankruptcy, still married to the same woman and a lot of stuff that would make a grown man cry. This podcast is my chance to reach people without leaving my home. Thank you for being receptive to it. I’ve learned a lot over the past twenty years. So I sell everything from books, targets, patches, shirts to keep my head afloat and be self sufficient.

The studio is a room in my basement under the washer and drier of my house. As I learn the business of production, all my missteps have been MBA courses. Now with a PhD from the school of Hard Knocks. I know I can’t make it on my own. I’m here for advice if you need or want it and it doesn’t have to be gun related. OK?

At one time I wanted to get into radio. Now, not so much. I am happy to grow the podcast audience for as long as you are there. The show is growing steadily and I get surprised at least once a month by some one from a different place in the US that has heard the show. Zombie Strike © is still rolling. What started out as a one time skit has progressed into a Old Time Radio style novella. And I love it. I hope you do too. I hope to redo all the stories to date for an audio CD this year with the text.

ATLANTA, GA --(AmmoLand.com)- Twenty juvenile whooping cranes and several chilly pilots in ultralights reached Decatur County, Ga., today on their ultralight-guided migration from Necedah National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) in central Wisconsin to Chassahowitzka and St. Marks National Wildlife Refuges along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

“Successfully restoring a population of a migratory species is a huge challenge and this pioneering effort is demonstrating the need for long-term commitment,” said Mike Harris, Nongame Conservation Section chief with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

These majestic birds, the tallest in North America, left Necedah refuge on Oct. 23, following Operation Migration’s four ultralight aircraft. Georgia is one of the seven states on the route to Florida. The flight path crosses the corner of southwest Georgia.

“I hope all Americans appreciate this monumental and inspiring project to save this species for future generations,” said Cindy Dohner, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s southeast regional director.

A public flyover is planned at San Marcos de Apalache State Park in St. Marks, Fla. There are now 85 migratory whooping cranes in the wild in eastern North America – including the first whooping crane chick to hatch in the wild in Wisconsin in more than a century. One crane from an earlier cohort was recently shot and killed in Indiana.

Harris said some of those birds are also moving through Georgia. People who spot a whooping crane are encouraged to contact the Nongame Conservation Section’s Forsyth office, (478) 994-1438, or report the sighting online at www.georgiawildlife.com/node/1321.

Anyone who encounters one of the cranes in the wild should give it the respect and distance the bird needs. Do not approach on foot within 600 feet; try to remain in your vehicle; do not approach in a vehicle within 600 feet or, if on a public road, within 300 feet. Also, please remain concealed and do not speak loudly enough that the birds can hear you. Finally, do not trespass on private property in an attempt to view whooping cranes.

The Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership, an international coalition of public and private groups conducting this project, is now in its ninth year in an effort to reintroduce this endangered species in eastern North America.

Each fall, pilots from Operation Migration, a founding partner of the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership, leads a new generation of whooping cranes behind their ultralight aircraft to wintering grounds in Florida. Unaided, the cranes will make the return migration to the Upper Midwest in the spring.

“This is the second time we have led birds through this part of Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama, Georgia, and I am still amazed at the support this project generates,” said Joe Duff, CEO of Operation Migration Inc.

“Without help from land-owners who allow us to use their property or the airport managers who provide hangar space for our flimsy aircraft this project could not be done. We are grateful to all the people who provide pumpkins for the birds, showers for the crew members or dinners. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.”

The ultra-led flock from Necedah NWR passed through Wisconsin, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee, Alabama, and passes through Georgia to reach their final destinations in Florida. Because the ability to fly with the birds is entirely weather dependent, the duration of the migration is unknown. To help speed the migration and improve safety for the birds and the pilots, a new route was developed last year that takes the team around the Appalachian Mountains, rather than over them.

In addition to the 20 ultralight-led birds, biologists from the International Crane Foundation and the Fish and Wildlife Service reared nine whooping cranes at Necedah NWR. The birds were released in the company of older cranes from whom the young birds will learn the migration route. This is the fifth year Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership has used this Direct Autumn Release method.

Whooping cranes that take part in the ultralight and Direct Autumn Release reintroductions are hatched at the U.S. Geological Survey’s Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Laurel, Md., and at the International Crane Foundation in Baraboo, Wis. Chicks are raised under a strict isolation protocol and to ensure the birds remain wild, handlers adhere to a no-talking rule and wear costumes designed to mask the human form.

Most of the reintroduced whooping cranes spend the summer in central Wisconsin, where they use areas on the Necedah NWR, as well as various state and private lands. Reintroduced whooping cranes have also spent time in Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan and other upper Midwest states.

In the spring and fall, project staff from International Crane Foundation and the Fish and Wildlife Service track and monitor the released cranes in an effort to learn as much as possible about their unassisted migrations and the habitat choices they make along the way. The birds are monitored during the winter in Florida by Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership project staff. Crane Foundation and Fish and Wildlife Service biologists continue to monitor the birds while they are in their summer locations.

The Whooping Crane Recovery Team has established a target number for this reintroduction. Once there are at least 125 individuals, including 25 breeding pairs, migrating in this eastern corridor the population could be considered self sustaining.

Whooping cranes were on the verge of extinction in the 1940s. Today, there are only about 500 birds in existence, 350 of them in the wild. Aside from the 85 Wisconsin-Florida birds, the only other migrating population of whooping cranes nests at the Wood Buffalo National Park in the Northwest Territories of Canada and winters at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge on the Texas Coast. Whooping cranes, named for their loud and penetrating unison calls, live and breed in wetland areas, where they feed on crabs, clams, frogs and seeds. They are distinctive animals, standing 5 feet tall, with white bodies, black wing tips and red crowns on their heads.

A non-migrating flock of about 30 birds lives year-round in central Florida. The remaining 150 whooping cranes are in captivity in zoos and breeding facilities around North America.

Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership founding members are the International Crane Foundation, Operation Migration Inc., Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the U.S. Geological Survey’s Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and National Wildlife Health Center, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin, and the International Whooping Crane Recovery Team.

Many other flyway states, provinces, private individuals and conservation groups have joined forces with and support the Whooping Crane Eastern Partnership by donating resources, funding and personnel. More than 60 percent of the project’s estimated $1.6 million annual budget comes from private sources in the form of grants, public donations and corporate sponsorship.

Since summer we’ve seen draft after draft of potential ballot box initiatives and scores of state and federal bills slated for the 2010 session. Even more foreboding is the deluge of high-tech TV ads featuring gut-wrenching images of suffering animals, along with “big lie” allegations about who’s to blame and Siren song appeals. The timing of this sophisticated propaganda campaign carefully lays the groundwork for the upcoming session. Like well-aimed artillery, these ads are being launched over and over to soften up targets, to break down defenses and to saturate the audience with imagery and ideas so twisted and volatile that when the time comes, only the slightest legislative spark will be needed to ignite them.

So this year, in addition to our core responsibilities, we’ve been working overtime to gear up, to strengthen our alliances, develop new resources, and to be ready for the coming year. NAIA is excited to be proposing proactive legislation in 2010 in key states that will actually improve conditions for animals, not advance some subversive agenda. We feel emboldened by our progress and better positioned than ever before, but we must have the full engagement of our grassroots to succeed. We need you to volunteer, and we need your financial backing.

With your help, and continued advocacy, we will be ready for the Big One and prepared to take on anything that threatens to take away choices and harms responsible animal ownership in America.

ClayTracker Sporting Clays App Scores Spot on iTunes WHAT’S HOT List

Manasquan, NJ --(AmmoLand.com)- Here is a nice update by Great American Outdoor Trail’s Radio Magazine on our friend and hero Tred Barta.

If you did not know Tred has a Spinal Stroke in the beginning of 2009 that has left him paralyzed from the waist down. It is great to hear his voice and to hear that he is pushing through this tragedy “the hard way..the Barta way”

Tred is famous for his outdoors television show The Best & Worst of Tred Barta on Versus Channel. Tred has worked hard in the past to raise $1,800,000 for children’s charities. Now one good turn deserves another.

Needles to say Tred has been out of work and has run up some staggering medical bills. Knowing Tred it must be very difficult to take any kind of charity but the man deserves our support.  If you feel you would like to help Tred, his wife and kids out and pay down some of these bills his family has set up a fund for just that purpose.
