Miami, FL --(Ammoland.com)- Taurus Holdings, a worldwide leader in firearms manufacturing congratulates pro-shooter Jessie Duff on her recent win in the Ladies Division at the 2013 USPSA Single Stack National Championship, located at PASA Park in Barry, Illinois.

With this being Jessie’s first run at competing in the Single Stack Nationals, weather and range conditions were not going to discourage her as she ran all 13 stages and winning four of them.

“Going into the match, I was a little anxious because I didn’t know what to expect, never shooting this before,” states Duff, “but once I started shooting, I felt more in my element”! Jessie addresses her training regiment, ”Training for this particular match was very similar to how I train for other USPSA matches, using the same drills, but placing a greater focus on my reloads than I normally would, since I would be reloading much more!”

As a result, Duff gives Taurus their first Single Stack National Championship win in the history of the USPSA.

“Words cannot express how proud we are of Jessie’s Single Stack win,” expresses Mark Kresser, CEO and President of Taurus, “her performance both on the range and in public simply reiterates the caliber of an individual she truly is and having her as a part of our Taurus family is an absolute honor.”

After the match, Jessie reflected back on her performance, “I shot a good, solid match and was very happy with my performance, but more importantly, the performance of my Taurus 1911 was flawless!”

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- Olympian Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.) earned a second-straight trip to the Prone Rifle finals of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup series Sunday placing seventh after a previous silver medal-finish in Changwon, Korea in April.

With two events today, the seven-day World Cup in Ft. Benning, Ga., came to a close.

The U.S. earned two medals with a Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) gold medal in Men’s 10m Air Pistol and a Dempster Christenson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) silver medal in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event. Keith Sanderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also got in on the highlights for the U.S. squad with a fifth-place finish in Men’s Rapid Fire Pistol.

Valerian Sauveplane of France won the all-new Prone final, securing the highest step of the podium on the last shot. The 32-year old two-time Olympian started off the final in eighth place, but with a zero-start final was able to climb his way to the top by the end of competition. On the last two shots, Sauveplane faced Germany’s Daniel Brodmeier beating him at the last shot with a 10.3 to win the gold medal. Brodmeier won the three-position rifle event earlier this week and set a new 50m Rifle Prone World Record of 628.8 points during the qualifications. The bronze went to Russia’s Fedro Vlasov, 29, who gained his very first medal in this event. Vlasov had already finished on the podium earlier in the week when he had pocketed the 10m Air Rifle bronze medal.

In an event that demands perfection and where anything but 10 or higher is the only thing that is good enough, McPhail’s second final string in which he shot 9.8 and 9.9 in between a 10.4 would ultimately seal his fate if even by the slightest margin, a mere 1/10th of a point away from advancing. McPhail shot a 621.6 to advance to the final with the seventh highest score on his home range.

Christenson finished in 18th-place with a 619.4 while two-time Olympian Eric Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.) shot a 619.3 to finish one place behind in 19th. Daniel Lowe (Olympia, Wash.) continued his strong scores in his first World Cup experiences. Competing in a non-qualifier spot for Team USA, Lowe’s 624.1 would have qualified him fourth. His score in the Air Rifle event would have provided him a similar fate. Matt Chezem (Simi Valley, Calif.) scored a 620.6 in a non-qualifying start as well.

The U.S. men struggled in the 50m Free Pistol event with 2008 Olympic Air Pistol bronze medalist Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.) turning in the highest total of 552 to finish 16th overall. Four-time Olympian Daryl Szarenski (Seale, Ala.) finished 24th with a 546 while Tuesday’s Air Pistol gold medalist Brown finished 25th with a 544.

The 35-year-old two-time Olympian Andrija Zlatic of Serbia won the last pistol match at the 2013 ISSF World Cup. Oleg Omelchuk, 29, from Ukraine, finished in second while 43-year-old Vladimir Isakov of Russia earned the bronze.

“This has been a successful competition, with great finals, and great results.” ISSF Vice President and USA Shooting President Gary Anderson said, while speaking at the closing of the second ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup. “Several new World Records were achieved during this World Cup Stage, both from Senior and Junior shooters. We would like to thanks all the officials and the volunteers, who made this event possible, and the US Army Marksmanship Unit, that hosted us in these facilities.”

The ISSF World Cup Stage in Fort Benning kicked off May 5 and included 10 Olympic Rifle and Pistol events comprised of 290 athletes from 40 nations. Three new World Records and two new Junior World Records were scored throughout this World Cup Stage. As was the case at the first ISSF World Cup Stage of the year, in Changwon, Korea, it was the People’s Republic of China that finished atop of the medal standings with seven medals overall (two gold, four silver and one bronze). Germany followed in second, with two gold medals, one silver and two bronze medals. Serbia finished on the medal standings podium as well with two gold, one silver and one bronze.

The ISSF World Cup Series will now move on to Munich, Germany, where the next Rifle & Pistol Stage will be held at the 1972 Olympic Shooting Range in Hochbrucke from May 24-30.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- Vincent Hancock (Eatonton, Ga.) doesn’t just expect perfection, he demands it and on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon back out on his old stomping grounds in Ft. Benning, Ga., he finally achieved it by connecting on 250-straight targets to win USA Shooting’s Spring Selection Match.

Two previous times he had shot a 249, but until today, perfection had escaped him.

“A 250 is what I’ve been after for quite a long time,” said Hancock. “To do that on my old home range is pretty special.”

But even Hancock misses once in a while and so he did during the Men’s Open Final, missing two targets but still waltzed to a seven-point margin of victory over rising junior T.J. Bayer (College Station, Texas).

“I just wasn’t all there for the final,” admitted Hancock. “I couldn’t get myself hyped up for it. Getting that 250 is what I was working so hard for and having accomplished it, there was just a natural let down. I just didn’t have the same intensity level going into it.”

All that really means is Hancock can set his eyes on a new goal and a 275 the next time wouldn’t be out of the question.

“I feel like I’m as strong now as I’ve ever been,” Hancock added. “I’m in the right spot. If you don’t miss, you can’t be beat.”

Bayer has emerged on the scene the last two selection matches, finishing third last fall while compiling an even better performance in Ft. Benning. The junior shooter didn’t blink in the wake of the strong talent shooting against him throughout the weekend, finishing four targets ahead of 2012 Olympian Frank Thompson (Alliance, Neb.). Like the Olympic Trials a year ago, Thompson used a perfect 25 final round to move up one position from qualifying and secure a spot on the 2013 World Championship Team. Thompson moved ahead of Dustin Perry (Lovelady, Texas). Jon Michael McGrath (Tulsa, Okla.) and Mark Weeks (Clinton Township, Mich.) finished fifth and sixth respectively.

All open finalists will be granted World Cup selection to the final two ISSF stops on the calendar with Granada, Spain, and Cyprus upcoming. Top-three finishers earned a trip to Granada, while the next three finishers will represent Team USA in Cyprus. The top three finishers also earned selection on the World Clay Target Championships Team that will take place Sept. 14-25 in Lima, Peru.

In the Men’s Junior Final, Phillip Jungman (Caldwell, Texas), lost in a shoot-out to Weeks for a spot in the open final only to come back and earn the title of top junior by out-dueling Nick Boerboon (Prior Lake, Minn.) by four targets. Luis “Taz” Gloria (Tucson, Ariz.) finished third while Zachary Womach (Bowie, Texas) was fourth.

The top-four finishers in the junior division will gain valuable international experience in the months to come with the top-two headed to Granada, while third and fourth-place finishers earn a trip to Cyprus. The top-three also earn a World Championship Junior Team selection.

Brandy Drozd (Bryan, Texas) earned her first major title in the open division by displaying the nerves of a steely veteran. A lackluster 21 in the final would put Drozd in a tie with veteran skeet shooter Haley Dunn (Muenster, Texas) and force a shoot-off for top prize. Drozd held her own through four sets of doubles on station four and would grab the win after Dunn missed one on the fifth pair.

Two other rising juniors — Morgan Craft (Muncy Valley, Pa.) and Dania Vizzi (Odessa, Fla.) — would finish third and fourth. Amber English (Colorado Springs, Colo.) rebounded from a final round 19 on Saturday to earn a fifth-place spot after a one-round shoot-off with 2012 National Champion Jaiden Grinnell (Port Angeles, Wash.).

Vizzi was at the head of the class in the junior competition after earning a 15-target win in the junior division. Vizzi scored a 50-straight in the open and junior division finals she shot. Gayla Gregory (College Station, Texas) was second.

Next up in the 2013 USA Shooting Spring Selection is action in Men’s Double Trap featuring Olympians and U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit teammates Glenn Eller (Houston, Texas), Josh Richmond (Hillsgrove, Pa.) and Jeff Holguin (Yorba Linda, Calif.). Eller earned an Olympic gold medal in this event in 2008 while Richmond is a 2010 World Champion and Holguin was a fourth-place finisher at the 2008 Olympic Games. Meanwhile, the stronghold these three have held on Double Trap over the years has some new additions with Billy Crawford (Johnstown, Ohio) and Ian Rupert (Muncy, Pa.). Crawford won the 2012 National Championships while Rupert earned a World Cup bronze medal earlier this year in Acapulco, Mexico. Competition begins Tuesday with Finals set for Wednesday.

LUVERNE, AL --(Ammoland.com)- While tens of thousands of us were enjoying the company of patriots and checking out the latest guns, gear and accessories at the NRA Annual Meeting in Houston, Texas, those who would disarm us were hard at work creating dissension and propaganda.

Of the many seminars at the NRA meeting, Mr. Rob Pincus conducted one on the topic of Home Defense. During the discussing Rob suggested that it might be prudent to install a rapid access gun vault in your kid’s bedroom in the event of a nighttime home invasion. The liberal media hit the panic button and fostered hysterics nationwide that the NRA was promoting the idea kids and guns being in the same room.

Unlike the left, we don’t believe the words KIDS and GUNS together are something to be feared. We don’t use our kids as props to serve our political agenda. We see our children as adults-in-training who need our guidance, not sheltering.

During this Student of the Gun Special Edition, we will devote an entire episode to the positive side of kids and guns. We’ll follow young people, adults-in-training as they enjoy the shooting sports. We’ll also feature the wonderful adult instructors who volunteer their time to work with these kids and help them to grow into responsible adults.

StudentoftheGun.com is your 24/7 source for all manner of gun related topics. SOTG offers education and entertainment through on-demand video material, online articles, books, DVD’s and live-training events. Student of the Gun; a beginner once, a student for life. Watch the Show right now: www.studentofthegun.com

Houston, TX --(Ammoland.com)- I.C.E Firearms Training Company owner, Rob Pincus, spoke at the 142nd NRA Annual Meeting. NRA Membership is geared towards owning firearms for potential defensive use.

The NRA meeting was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas from May 3-5, 2013.

Pincus is the owner at I.C.E. Training Company, that develops, teaches and consults on training for military, law enforcement, private security and others interested in developing efficient firearms, tactical operations and defensive skills.

During the NRA Annual Meeting, Pincus covered “Defensive Shooting Skill Development” and “Home Defense Fundamentals.”

Thousands of NRA Members attended the Annual Meeting and over 550 exhibitors covered the exhibit hall space. Home defense was a focus of this years NRA annual members meeting and Pincus’ seminar on “Home Defense Concepts” was one of the well attended offerings.

Pincus stated “if I’m going to go to the kid anyway, and I have an extra gun and an extra safe, why not put it in their closet?”

This statement raised a lot of eyebrows during his seminar, but he suggests that because parents run instinctively to their children’s bedroom when they fear a home invasion, they might as well store a gun in their children’s bedroom.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- Representing the value of hard work and dedication, Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) went from the quiet understudy of USA Shooting’s Pistol Team to perhaps its brightest pupil Tuesday in Ft. Benning, Ga., by winning his first career World Cup medal.

A clutch final in which Brown shook off a tremendous bout of nerves would place the Idaho native atop the podium as Team USA claimed its second medal of the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup USA.

Brown becomes just the 11th American pistol shooter all-time (male or female) to win a World Cup gold and becomes just the third USA Shooting Team member to ever win gold in the Air Pistol event since ISSF World Cups began in 1986 (124 World Cups) joining teammate Daryl Szarenski (Seale, Ala.) and Erich Buljung who each recorded two.

Brown’s golden moment makes it two medals for the USA Shooting Team following Dempster Christenson’s (Sioux Falls, S.D.) silver medal in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event on Monday. Both Olympic Training Center resident athletes have proven that their hard work is paying off as both have proven to be range regulars putting in a tremendous amount of dedication to perfecting their craft.

“Winning was the plan!” the 21-year-old Brown said. “It’s definitely rewarding to know that what I’ve been doing and all the time spent has been working. This is confirmation that what you’re doing is right.”

Though he admitted a bout of nerves was present shooting in his first-ever ISSF final round, Brown stayed the course and fended off his much more experienced competitors.

Brown made it to the final with a qualification score of 580/600 points. Then, during the final, he shot 202.1 points, climbing up the scoreboard to the top. On the final of 20 shots, Brown had built up a lead of over two points over his closest follower, two-time Olympian Oleh Omelchuk of Ukraine, who was eight year’s Browns senior. The bronze medal went to 30-year-old Denis Koulakov of Russia. The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Vladimir Isakov of Russia, finished fifth.

“Will had a great performance in the final,” said Sergey Luzov, USA Shooting’s National Pistol Coach. “That’s what he’s capable of certainly and it proves that our younger athletes are ready for this moment. His discipline in preparation for these matches is his greatest strength. He’s a low-maintenance kid who does everything right.”

Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.), a 2008 Olympian and fourth-place finisher, missed making today’s final by two points and finished 13th with a 578. James Henderson (Midland, Ga.) compiled a 574 and finished 22nd. John Zurek (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded a 566.

The ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Fort Benning continues Wednesday with Women’s 10m Air Rifle. On the line representing Team USA will be veteran Amy Sowash (Richmond, Ky.) along with another World Cup rookie in Elizabeth Gratz (Sigel, Ill.).

Sowash has spent the past nine months as an assistant coach for her alma mater, the University of Kentucky. Under long-time head coach Harry Mullins, Sowash helped guide the team to a runner-up finish at the recent NCAA Rifle Championships while mentoring USA Shooting’s young up-and-coming junior talent on the Wildcat squad including Connor Davis (Shelbyville, Ky.), Elijah Ellis (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Emily Holsopple (Wilcox, Pa.). The teacher steps back onto the range for the first time since finishing just shy of an Olympic Team berth last summer.

The 17-year-old Gratz represents an exciting future in women’s rifle for Team USA as she starts earning her stripes competing in bigger matches. Also competing will be U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) athlete Erin Lorenzen (Fort Wayne, Ind.) as well as Lisette Grunwell-Lacey (Old Lyme, Conn.).

SHACKLESFORD, VA --(Ammoland.com)- Team ITI Captain Brandon Wright of Team International Training, Inc. (ITI) recently confirmed The Safariland Group as a new sponsor for the 2013 competitive season.

The Safariland Group will be providing Wright with the new “Range Series” developed by Team Safariland’s Bobby McGee. This includes a belt, holster and newly designed magazine pouches.

“The Safariland Group is a proud product supporter of Brandon,” commented Bobby McGee, SR. Field Tech. SPC. (NPD/R&D)(DG-ENG.) of The Safariland Group. “Brandon was one of my key people to test our new Safariland ‘Range Series’ Products and was able to win the 2013 Smith & Wesson® IDPA Indoor National Championships using Safariland gear.”

Safariland.com

“The Safariland Group continues to deliver quality products. This added gear makes my job easier and shooting equipment complete,” remarked Wright. “For Tactical Operations I use the Model 6004 SLS drop leg holster. For USPSA, I use the Model 5198 holster, along with the ELS belt system. Now for IDPA, I have the new “Range Series” holster, magazine pouches and belt. This new system allows for me to keep my holster and magazine pouches in one place while instructing at ITI. Then when I’m ready to shoot an IDPA match, I simply unsnap the magazine pouch off, leave the holster on the belt, run the belt through the belt loops and snap the magazine pouch back on. Bobby McGee made this series easy on, easy off.”

Wright will be competing next at the 2013 USPSA Springfield Armory Single Stack Nationals held in Barry, IL May 9th through 11th, 2013.

BERRYVILLE, Ark. --(Ammoland.com)- The Springfield, Massachusetts based firearms maker Smith & Wesson will be the presenting sponsor of the 17th Annual Massachusetts State IDPA Championship, according to an announcement by the match organizers.

The 17th Annual Massachusetts State IDPA Championship, presented by Smith & Wesson, will take place June 1-2 at the Rod & Gun Club of New Bedford in North Dartmouth. The match will feature a 10 stage course of fire with a 150 round count. It will also serve as the first leg of the newly announced King of New England contest.

“The name Smith & Wesson is near and dear to members of the Bay State shooting community. Throughout the years this American gun making icon has extended a helping hand to shooting clubs and matches, and we couldn’t be prouder to announce that our 17th Annual IDPA State Championship will bear the name Smith & Wesson,” said John Catterall.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- Despite record low temperatures outside Wednesday April 10th 2013, the Women’s Air Rifle Final of the National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (NJOSC) was hotly contested on the indoor range of the U.S. Olympic Shooting Center in Colorado Springs.

And as the last pellet settled into place, it was a pair of Falcons that would claim two of the event’s top-three prizes.

A mix of high school and collegiate talent faced-off in the final with Air Force sophomore Meredith Carpentier (Waukegan, Ill.) showcasing her mettle throughout the two-day, 90-shot event to walk away with the overall title. In second place heading into today, Carpentier shot a 396/400 to open up a five-point advantage on second-place qualifiers and National Junior Team members Elizabeth Gratz (Sigel, Ill.) and Haylea Broughton (Tulsa, Okla.).

National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships

Carpentier would be the only one of the three to survive the medal push of the other event finalists as the second through fifth-place finishers would be determined by a mere .7 points in the end. Day-one leader and 16-year-old Sasha Perez (Newberg, Ore.) came up from the fifth position with a 104.0 final to claim the second podium spot. Carpentier’s Air Force teammate Kevyn Stinett (Colorado Springs, Colo.) would earn the bronze medal, falling .3 shy of Perez and finishing that same margin ahead of Gratz.

The Women’s Air Rifle featured collegiate competitors from Air Force, Nebraska (Magdalena Mical), and Texas Christian University (Megan Lee).

Carpentier seems to be a rising force in Women’s Air Rifle nationally as she recently finished seventh overall at the 2013 NCAA Rifle Championships and her Junior Olympic qualifying score of 399 is a world-class result in any competition. As an Air Force cadet, she’s no stranger to uniform and the greater meaning behind it. Still, as she was awarded her USA Shooting National Team jacket, she recognized the significance of her accomplishment.

“That’s a big deal. I’m used to representing the Air Force and everything, I get that all the time, ‘Be on your best behavior wherever you go’ when I’m representing the Air Force, but now I have a big old U S of A on my back and that’s an even bigger deal,” she said. “That means representing the whole country so that takes my whole self-image thing to a whole other level.”

Today’s hot shot no doubt was 16-year-old Minden Miles (Weatherford, Texas) who had to win a shoot-off against Alison Weisz (Belgrade, Mont.) even to make the final. But, once she did she proved that she more than belonged with an finals-high score of 104.8 in the event that took her from eighth position to sixth.

High J2 (15-17 year-olds) finisher was Gratz while 14-year-old Elizabeth Ewert (Burnsville, Minn.) earned top scores in the J3 (14-under) category.

The surname Martin will be an important one to remember as shooting unfolds in three-position smallbore (.22 caliber) starting Thursday. The 2012 bronze medalist, Mackenzie Martin (Fairhaven, Mass.), will be looking to advance her position on the podium while Rachel Martin (Peralta, N.M.) looks to improve on her sixth-place finish from last year. Rachel most recently finished first at the Rocky Mountain Rifle Championships in February. A pair of Keystone State shooters stand ready to rain on the Martin parade including last year’s 14th place finisher Alyssa Gestl (Palmyra, Pa.) who posted the second highest score of qualification. Deanna Binnie (Hollsopple, Pa.) has been practicing in the off-season after her 19th place finish from 2012 by posting the highest qualifying score of 584.

Qualifying for the National competition begins at the state level as State Junior Olympic Championships included competition in 47 states utilizing 80 different USA Shooting clubs. The 2013 competition consisted of over 2,200 individual participants in rifle and pistol events. State champions and those who qualify via high scores are invited to Colorado Springs to compete in the NJSOC

The competition takes place over a three-week period with over 500 of the finest junior shooters in attendance. The top-two finishers in each event earn a spot on USA Shooting’s National Junior Team. The 17-day event features shooting matches in Men’s & Women’s Pistol (Air/Sport) and Rifle (Air/Smallbore).

More information can also be found on the USA Shooting website by clicking on the ‘National Junior Olympic Program’ link located under the ‘Events’ tab. Follow along also using the Twitter Hashtag #NJOSC or via the USA Shooting’s Facebook page. For scores, please visit USA Shooting’s match results page following each competition.

Ft. Benning, Ga - Nineteen of the world’s best Olympic-style shooting competitors will be among the 300 athletes from 40 nations that arrive into the Peach State later this week.

The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU), located in Ft. Benning, Ga., and USA Shooting are prepping to host an International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup for Rifle and Pistol, May 5-12.

Thirty-two American athletes, including 12 Olympians, will take to the firing lines during the World Cup but just two, 1996 Olympic silver medalist Emil Milev (Temple Terrace, Fla.) and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.) , are among the 19 medal-heavy participants taking part in this year’s USA World Cup. Milev actually won his medal as part of the Bulgarian Olympic Team, having competed in three Olympic Games for his native country before moving to the United States in 2004. Turner earned his medal in the air pistol event in Beijing, but will try his hand at 50m Free Pistol on the events last day, Sunday, May 12.

“I’m excited to be able to compete in Ft. Benning again,” said Milev, a four-time Olympian and 1996 Olympic silver medalist in Rapid Fire Pistol. “This is going to be my first international start after the Olympic Games and the anticipation is building up. I changed a lot of things in my training routine and I’m looking forward to this competition for affirmation of all the work I’ve done in the last six months.”

Four-time Olympian and 1996 Olympic silver medalist Emil Milev is among 19 Olympic medalists set to compete in World Cup USA in Ft. Benning, Ga.

Among the featured athletes participating will be Milev’s former Bulgarian teammate in five-time Olympic medalist Maria Grozdeva, who owns two gold and three bronze Olympic medals while competing in both Air & 25m Pistol events. The Women’s Pistol events are stacked with talent with six total competitors having won Olympic hardware. Another name to watch out for will be the Ukraine’s Olena Kostevych, who owns three Olympic medals as well.

In the rifle category, the venerable Rajmond Debevec of Slovenia stands alone with his three Olympic medals in the Prone and Three-Position events. The Men’s Rifle and Pistol events each have five competitors that have stood on the Olympic podium previously. In Women’s Rifle, Serbian Ivana Maksimovic, the 2012 Olympic silver medalist behind America’s Jamie Gray (Lebanon, Pa.) in Three-Position Rifle, is the lone medalist competing.

Please see below for the complete list of top International Competitors participating.

Milev and Turner are among the 12 Olympians entered to compete for the U.S. contingent including three USAMU soldiers Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.), Jason Parker (Omaha, Neb.) and Eric Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.). Georgia native Jonathan Hall (Carrollton, Ga.) is another rifle competitor that will compete after experiencing his first Olympic Games in London.

Along with Milev and Turner, the USA Shooting Pistol Team also includes Olympians Daryl Szarenski (’00, ’04 ’08, ’12/Seale, Ala.), Keith Sanderson (’08, ’12/Colorado Springs, Colo.), Sandra Uptagrafft (2012/Phenix City, Ala.), ’08 teammates Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.) and Brenda Silva (Riverside, Calif.), and four-time Olympian Elizabeth “Libby” Callahan (’96, ’00, ’04, ’08/Columbia, S.C.).

But there are significant absentees particularly on the rifle side including Olympic medal-winners Gray and Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) as both are taking time to recover after the Olympic year and nursing back ailments that have plagued them in recent years. Other missing Olympic teammates includes two formidable female rifle shooters in Sarah Scherer (Woburn, Mass.) and Amanda Furrer (Spokane, Wash.) who will be graduating from Texas Christian University and Ohio State University in the coming weeks. Also, pistol shooter Nick Mowrer (Butte, Mont.) will be unable to attend as he is finishing up his Basic Training after enlisting in the Army.

For the complete release on the USA Shooting Team participating in the 2013 World Cup USA, click here.

All competitors are still adjusting to the new ISSF rules in place that have brought about the most extensive set of modifications in the sports history while implementing a completely new Finals format. After the qualification rounds, which are conducted under the old rules, the top-eight shooters advance to a semifinal-a new competition stage. The qualification score is not carried forward as all the semifinalists start from zero. The new rules push even greater drama on the final stages. The ISSF feels that the changes make medal decisions easier to understand, thus enhancing the viewing excitement for both spectators and TV audience.

China finished atop the medal standings in the year’s only previous rifle/pistol World Cup in Changwon, Korea. Chinese shooters won eight medals, including four gold and four silver. Germany followed in second place with three gold and one silver.

In 2012, the unit sent seven of its Soldiers to London to compete on the world’s grandest stage, including the first combat-injured active-duty Soldier to ever compete in a Paralympic Games. The extraordinary combined efforts of the assigned Soldiers and Civilians of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit are why we have come to be known as “The Home of Champions.”

BURLINGTON, Vt. --(Ammoland.com)- On a gorgeous April Sunday afternoon in the Green Mountains, over two dozen new shooters gathered at Laberge’s Shooting Range in Charlotte, Vermont for a new shooters clinic hosted by the University of Vermont Pistol Team.

Four days a year the University of Vermont Pistol Team holds new shooters clinics for any UVM student interested in competing in USPSA, Scholastic Pistol Program, and Scholastic Steel Challenge. After a whirlwind year for the team, taking first place in rimfire division and second place in centerfire at SPP Nationals in Ft. Benning, Ga., the team was eager to share their love of shooting with their peers.

Perhaps one of the strongest shooting programs in the northeast, the clinics serve as a powerful recruiting opportunity.

“The amount of shooting experience varied but everyone seemed to have a good time, and I was really impressed with some of the performances by the new shooters,” stated newly appointed Pistol Team Captain Laura Michalak.

“I think we have a lot of prospective talent among both the guys and girls but I definitely saw some possibility of forming a girl-squad for next semester, so that’s really exciting.”

Students began with an introduction by the Pistol Team Coach Adam Nilson and Shooting Club President Kevin Cafferky, followed by an in-depth safety briefing on the rules of the range. Shooters then went through the basics of grip, stance and trigger control as well as several magazines of .22LR ammunition while working on marksmanship.

Certainly the highlight for many was running through a stage of Steel Challenge while under the watchful eyes of UVM Pistol Team team’s top shooters who were on hand to serve as range safety officers and positive role models.

“Each season the team looks to recruit enough new shooters to maintain three competitive squads,” noted Kevin Cafferky. “For the two rimfire squads, they’ll be mentored and groomed throughout the year by the more experienced shooters so they can step up to the plate when it’s time to compete in the national championships.”

As the afternoon came to a close, there were more than a few smiles around the pistol pit, as well as a newfound appreciation for the shooting sports. While the steel clanged into the team’s conex, phone numbers were exchanged, and students piled back into cars for the trip back to campus. While practicing in such a cold climate has its disadvantages, one thing is certain for the University of Vermont; their shooting sports program will remain a force to be reckoned with.

USA --(Ammoland.com)- Shooting USA – The IDPA Nationals

It’s the IDPA National Championship, the shooting sport derived from concealed carry training will crown the champions. International Defensive Pistol Association competition is a shooting sport rooted in the practice of concealed carry, not necessarily training, but still a great way to sharpen the skills that could save your life. And in this day and age that is a popular combination. Plus, Garry James with the story of the Broom Handle Mauser, that’s now one of History’s Guns. More Info…

Shooting USA’s Impossible Shots – Double Vision
Randy OitkerRandy Oitker recreates the shot that made him famous. Two arrows, two targets, one shot. But can Randy be a “ringer’? Plus a rare look at Randy’s shooting technique. How the young phenom pulls off multiple arrow shots. Plus, one of many tributes to our departed friend, the late Bob Munden.

Losing Another Legend:
Tom Knapp Longtime friend and exhibition shooter, Tom Knapp passed away on Friday at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. We will miss Tom’s big voice and his Impossible Shots. Jim Shepherd, Editor of the Outdoor Wires, has written his recollections of Tom, and mine, in a eulogy worth reading.

See You in Houston:
NRA Houston 2013John, Mike, and I are flying down on Thursday for the three days of the NRA Annual Meeting and Expo. We’ll have Shooting USA pod-casts direct from the show floor from the Smith & Wesson booth. Look for John at the Bushnell – Uncle Mike’s booth. And Mike Irvine will be at Ithaca Gun Company (and no doubt scouting out the newest waterfowl accessories). And I’ll be checking to see what Les Baer Sr. has come up with lately at his booth. We all look forward to seeing you there.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- The U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) and USA Shooting are prepping to host an International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup for Rifle and Pistol, May 5-12.

A total of 300 athletes, including 32 of America’s top Olympic-style shooters, representing 41 nations are expected to compete.

Known as the Home of Champions, the USAMU, located in Ft. Benning, Ga., will play host to the ISSF World Cup for the seventh time. The relationship began in 1994 and the last previous World Cup was held in 2011.

“We take a lot of pride in hosting ISSF events and World Cups and recognize what an important opportunity this creates to showcase our sport in the U.S.,” said Bob Mitchell, Executive Director of USA Shooting. “The opportunities to compete on our home soil against the best in the world are extremely limited and we’re thankful for the ability to host this event in cooperation with USAMU and the first-class ranges they provide.”

Twelve Olympians are entered to compete for the U.S. contingent including three USAMU soldiers including Michael McPhail (Darlington, Wis.), Jason Parker (Omaha, Neb.) and Eric Uptagrafft (Phenix City, Ala.). The Prone Rifle specialist McPhail just missed making the Olympic final in London, but rebounded in Changwon (Korea) World Cup to claim the silver medal. In his fourth Olympic Games, Parker’s finish (30th) wasn’t up to his usual high standard, but he came back to win the World Cup Final in Bangkok, Thailand. Uptagrafft earned a spot on the 2012 Olympic Team after a 16-year-absence as he was a member of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Olympians Michael McPhail, Sandra Uptagrafft and Jason Turner set to lead Team USA into the ISSF World Cup USA.

“I am very excited to be competing in the Ft. Benning World Cup,” said Parker. “It is always fun to compete on our home range with the support of family and friends. I have one goal in mind and that’s to stand on the top podium and listen to our National Anthem being played.”

Joining the USAMU trio of marksmen is 2008 Olympic bronze medalist Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.), who will be competing in the 50m Free Pistol event. But there are significant absentees particularly on the rifle side including Olympic medal-winners Jamie Gray (Lebanon, Pa.) and Matt Emmons (Browns Mills, N.J.) as both are taking time to recover after the Olympic year and nursing back ailments that have plagued them in recent years.

Rising National Junior Team members Alana Townsend, Starlin Shi, Connor Davis and Tyler Rico Aim for World Cup Success in Ft. Benning.

While their absence will be felt, it does make room for a talented crop of USA Shooting National Junior Team shooters, many of whom will compete in their first World Cup competition. On the pistol side, Starlin Chi (Potomac, Md.) is a three-time Junior Olympic champion and will test her junior success against formidable World Cup competition in the Women’s 25m event while 2013 Junior Olympic Air Pistol Champ Alana Townsend (Kalispell, Mont.) gets her first World Cup nod as well from National Pistol Coach Sergey Luzov. Also making the team for this USA World Cup are 2012 Olympians Emil Milev (Temple Terrace, Fla.), Daryl Szarenski (Seale, Ala.), Keith Sanderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Sandra Uptagrafft (2012/Phenix City, Ala.), ’08 teammates Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.) and Brenda Silva (Riverside, Calif.), and four-time Olympian Elizabeth “Libby” Callahan (’96, ’00, ’04, ’08/Columbia, S.C.).

“Our 2013 USA World Cup Pistol Team is a combination of the best veterans and young talents,” said Luzov. “This is a great opportunity for our progressing juniors to test their skills in the world-class competition during the school year and prior to competing in the International Junior match in the Czech Republic later this summer. This Cup is also the first World Cup for our Team to experience the new ISSF Finals Rules.”

New National Rifle Coach Marcus Raab will lead a team into World Cup competition for the first time that will be buoyed by the veteran presence of the USAMU rifle shooters mentioned previously and 2012 Olympian Jonathan Hall (Carrollton, Ga.). He’ll supplement that with junior talent as well including fast-rising Air Rifle shooter Connor Davis (Shelbyville, Ky.), a Kentucky freshman who finished fourth at the 2013 NCAA Rifle Championships and recently won the air rifle competition at the 2013 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships. Raab will conduct an Air Rifle Team training camp this coming weekend at the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s South facility in Anniston, Ala., in preparation for World Cup and to solidify his World Cup starting spots in Men’s Air Rifle. The team will then move on to Ft. Benning to meet up with the smallbore (.22 caliber) U.S. Team members and conduct final preparations in advance of the start of the World Cup match on Monday, May 6.

“I’m eager to get my first competition underway as the National Team Coach,” said Raab. “We’ve assembled a competitive squad with a strong mix of veterans and rising junior talent and we’ll see who is ready to meet the challenges of World Cup competition. This experience, on a range we’re all familiar with, is going to be a great starting point for where we go from here in moving through the quad.”

See below for a complete list of U.S. competitors.

ABOUT USAMU
The United States Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) was established on March 1, 1956 at the direction of President Dwight D. Eisenhower to raise the standards of marksmanship throughout the U.S. Army. The USAMU is a battalion of the U.S. Army Accessions Support Brigade, a subordinate unit of the Army Marketing and Research Group.

This unit has proudly represented the U.S. during every Summer Olympic Games that the United States has participated in since 1960, earning 24 Olympic medals.

Army Marksmanship Unit are why we have come to be known as ”The Home of Champions.”

BEAVERTON, OR. --(Ammoland.com)- Leupold & Stevens, Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of Tiffany Piper to the company’s stable of competitive shooters.

A regular atop the Bianchi Cup junior division, the 19-year-old New Zealand native is looking to pick up her first women’s title at the famed match this year. En route to her third junior title, Piper also finished third in the chase for the overall women’s title in 2012.

Beginning with air pistol as a 10-year-old, Piper moved up to a .22 rimfire by age 11 and .38 Super by age 12. Piper competed in her first Bianchi Cup when she was just 13. An accomplished action pistol shooter, Piper won four consecutive New Zealand national titles, four consecutive national junior titles and was part of the 2008 World Cup champion ladies team.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- USA Shooting will host the 2013 Coach College (Sept. 16-18 2013) and Coaches Conference (Sept. 19-21 2013 ) for continuing education of USA Shooting coaches and program leaders at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs.

Registration is now officially open for both programs by clicking on the following links:

COACH COLLEGE: https://www.usashooting.org/membership/coaches/2013-coach-college

Coach Conference: https://www.usashooting.org/membership/coaches/2013-coach-conference

USA Shooting recognizes that coaching athletes is one of the most challenging endeavors, while it can be also be one of the most rewarding. The Coach College and Conference is organized to help coaches meet the challenges of coaching competitive athletes. The program is a cooperative effort designed by the National Rifle Association, USA Shooting and the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP).

The program is designed for either those with an interest in becoming a certified coach in any of the rifle, pistol or shotgun disciplines or for those certified coaches wanting to expand their skills and get advanced coaching certification. The coach conference is the place to learn from others, network with other coaches and build a better competitive program at the club level.

“On-going coach education and development is an absolute priority for USA Shooting,” said Michael Theimer, 1976 Olympian and the Youth Programs and Athlete Development Manager for USA Shooting. “We recognize that our ability to reach athletes and strengthen our pipeline can only be as strong as the coaches involved. At a grassroots level, the coaches we nurture help provide the foundation necessary for youth introduction, development and success in the shooting sports.”

USA Shooting has expanded the number of topics/presentations that will be offered at this biennial conference by conducting concurrent sessions to allow greater choice and variety for participants. The following sessions are planned: Safe Sport program; National Coach panel discussion; athlete panel discussion – what makes a good coach; ISSF rule changes; Midway USA Foundation funding opportunities; the German shooting club model by Gary Anderson; fundraising ’101′; collegiate, Paralympic and CMP shooting updates; and a SCATT clinic on Thursday afternoon prior to the conference. This is just a short list of opportunities that coaches will be able to learn from.

Theimer put out a challenge to those coaches who attended in 2011 where just over 100 coaches attended.

“Identify, recruit, train and develop at least one new coach and bring them with you to the 2013 biennial coach conference.”

USA Shooting expects between 150-200 coaches attending from all over the U.S. to include several coaches from other countries.

Dorm rooms at the U.S. Olympic Training Center will be extremely limited and on first-come, first-serve basis. A list of hotel options in the region will be provided with the registration information once it becomes available.

USA Shooting is headquartered at the Olympic Training Center (OTC) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Located on the OTC campus, the Olympic Shooting Center was built in 1985 and is used for elite and resident athlete training, competitions, national championships, coaching seminars, camps, committee meetings and local clubs. Approximately 25 resident and day-use athletes train at the OTC during the year.

The Shooting Center is the largest indoor shooting facility in the Western Hemisphere and the third largest in the world. Three separate ranges provide 29 firing points from 50 meters and 73 firing points from 10 meters for training and competitions. It also houses the administration offices, a gunsmith room and locker rooms for resident and visiting athletes.

In addition to the indoor ranges at the OTC, the outdoor ranges at the International Shooting Park are also used by U.S. Shooting Team members. Construction began in 1985 on 102 acres of land leased to the United States Olympic Committee at the edge of the U.S. Army Fort Carson military base. Five superimposed international-style skeet and bunker trap fields, shade shelters and a clubhouse have been completed.

SMYRNA, Ga. --(Ammoland.com)- Today GLOCK, Inc. announced that Team GLOCK member Tori Nonaka won the Production Class High Lady title at the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) Area 6 Championship, held at the Ancient City Shooting Range in St. Augustine, Fla., April 19-21, 2013.

Nonaka and fellow Team GLOCK member Michelle Viscusi collaborated as a squad for the match and benefited from the combined experience and stage strategy.

Following two consecutive years of competing in the USPSA Area 6 with her G24 Limited GLOCK, Nonaka competed with her new G34 Production GLOCK from SJC Customs. Switching from the Limited Division to the Production Division forced Nonaka to show her skills in the more restrictive division. After two years away from that division, Nonaka took home the High Lady title in her first USPSA Area competition for 2013 using a nearly stock-model GLOCK.

“With the new G34 Production GLOCK, I performed well with all my steel hits for most of the match, going 1-for-1,” shared Nonaka. “Everything came together in this match; my GLOCK ran flawlessly.”

The next appearance for Team GLOCK is the 142nd NRA Annual Meeting and Exhibits, May 3-5, 2013, in Houston, TX, where Nonaka will be joined by Viscusi and team captain KC Eusebio.

EXETER, NH --(Ammoland.com)- Max Michel, Jr., SIG SAUER’s competitive shooting champion, used his signature pistol to put his name atop the United States Practical Shooting Association’s Area 6 Championship leaderboard.

Using the 1911 MAX model he helped design, Michel dominated the Single-Stack division at the Ancient City Shooting Range in St. Augustine, Fla. With 1178.3447 match points, Michel topped the competition by a mere 0.474 percentage points.

The 1911 MAX is the culmination of a joint effort between SIG SAUER and the champion shooter. Designed to meet the needs of a world-class shooter, but built to the demanding specifications of SIG SAUER, the 1911 MAX is designed from the ground up to be the champion’s choice for action pistol competition.

“The 1911 MAX encompasses everything a single-stack competitor needs to win right out of the box,” said Jarrod McDevitt, SIG SAUER Rifle Product and Competitive Shooting Program Manager. “As a proud supporter of the shooting sports, we built this with the insight of a world champion.”

This year is shaping up to be a big competitive year for SIG SAUER. Already a regular sponsor of shooting matches around the country, SIG SAUER is increasing its already high level of participation. In addition to United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA), Steel Challenge, Bianchi Cup, and NRA Police competitions, the firearms manufacturer will also expand its participation in the International Defensive Pistol Association and multigun/3-Gun competitions.

National Rifle Association

FAIRFAX, Va. --(Ammoland.com)- National Rifle Association programs have experienced significant growth since 2008 thanks to an increased national interest in the shooting sports, personal safety and hunting.

Demand for popular courses like NRA Basic Pistol and the female-focused Women On Target Instructional Shooting Clinics have led to the NRA rapidly approaching 100,000 trained Certified Firearms Instructors and Range Safety Officers. Responsible for teaching and supervising safe shooting activities, their number has surged from 58,526 to 97,755 in just five years.

The growth of firearms’ popularity among women has been especially noticeable, as participation in Women On Target rose by 67% from 2008 to 2012. Last year 12,142 women were reached through 384 clinics.

“We’re encouraged about the state of firearms in America by the increasing success and reach of our programs,” said Bill Poole, Managing Director of NRA’s Educational and Training Division. “Providing citizens with ways to safely exercise their Second Amendment rights helps them discover new interests and ensures our shooting traditions will be a lasting heritage passed on to future generations.”

Youth Training and the Youth Hunter Education Challenge are additional programs that have seen enormous growth. Nearly four million youth were taught proper firearms use in 2012 by instructors utilizing the NRA’s safety and training program, two million more than in 2008. YHEC, North America’s most comprehensive outdoor skills and safety training program for young hunters, doubled its events and attendees over the five year period, hosting 10,176 juniors over 106 events last year.

The data on the growth of these NRA programs will contribute to the National Shooting Sports Foundation’s Task Force 20/20, a research project developed in 2008 to increase and monitor hunting and shooting sports participation.

The NRA oversees 178 programs designed to help women, young people, competitive shooters and law enforcement better practice their Second Amendment rights nationwide with quality firearm training, safety and educational opportunities.
