Manassas, VA, -(AmmoLand.com)- Dustin Reininger is serving a five-year sentence with a three-year minimum before he’s eligible for parole. His crime? Pulling off the highway to get some rest during a long drive.

Reininger, a veteran of both the Army and the Air Force, and a former police officer, was moving from Maine back to Texas, but only made it as far as New Jersey. He got tired and parked behind a building in Readington Township, New Jersey, . Had he held out for another 20 minutes, there wouldn’t be a story about Dustin Reininger because he wouldn’t have had a problem in Pennsylvania, but he was tired so he stopped in New Jersey.

Police found him asleep in his SUV early that morning. Reininger just wanted to move on down the road, but officers thought something in the back seat looked like a gun case and considered that probable cause for a search. They found several rifles, shotguns, and handguns, as well as hollow point bullets, and a “standard-capacity” magazine.

Of course, all of that is perfectly legal in Maine and in Texas – or even 24 miles up the road in Pennsylvania – but it’s not legal in New Jersey without a permit. Federal law provides safe passage for someone transporting guns through a restrictive jurisdiction, but the jury didn’t get to hear about that law. An appeals court panel said that law didn’t apply because it specifies that the guns should be locked in the trunk, and Reininger’s SUV didn’t have a trunk.

They also ruled that officers were justified in searching Reininger’s car because they recognized the gun cases as evidence of a crime. The case could go to the State Supreme Court, but I wouldn’t make any bets on the chances of a new trial.

Dustin Reininger’s life has been destroyed simply because he innocently possessed his legally owned guns in the wrong place at the wrong time. A minimum of 3 years in a New Jersey prison is no cake walk. Reininger will, for the rest of his life, have to mark “Yes” on job applications asking if he’s ever been convicted of a felony, and he is barred from ever owning firearms again. So much for his career in law enforcement.

This is what gun control laws do. They turn innocent people into criminals, destroying lives, while protecting no one.

A spokesman for the NJ Attorney General’s office told the AP that the office was “gratified that the court accepted our arguments that none of the issues had any legal merit, or provided a basis to upset the defendant’s conviction.”

It doesn’t matter to the police or the politicians or the Attorney General that this guy wasn’t hurting anyone, or that he wasn’t planning to hurt anyone. All that matters to them is that they caught and convicted someone who was in technical violation of their hoplophobic gun laws. And unfortunately, this is an attitude that is prevalent in too many police departments and AG’s offices around the country.

Reininger’s story is not unique, it just happens to be a recent, and particularly egregious, example of something we’ve been seeing routinely for over 40 years.

The other side of the coin is just as bad. While gun laws routinely ensnare the innocent, they are just as routinely dismissed in prosecuting serious career criminals. Some gun laws can’t even be enforced against criminals. For instance, a convicted felon cannot be prosecuted for failing to register his illegal weapon because doing so would be self-incriminating. So we end up with serious, violent criminals released back on the street, while harmless people like Dustin Reininger are zealously prosecuted for technical violations – and the prosecution is “gratified.”

The stories of people unjustly prosecuted – and persecuted – in the name of gun control would fill a book. The history is clear; no matter how innocuous or “common sense” a gun law might seem, once it goes into force it is inevitably used to harass and abuse gun owners.

That’s just one of the reasons gun owners opposed the recent Manchin-Toomey proposal to extend background checks to private sales. Among the very troubling provisions in that proposal, the most obvious danger is the requirement that even transactions involving concealed carry permit holders – who are exempt from background checks – would have been required to go through a dealer. The only reason to do that is to create a permanent record of the transaction – registration – something gun owners oppose for very good reasons.

Gun control is not about guns, it’s about control. History shows that gun laws always end up being used to harass and persecute regular gun owners. Gun owners have every reason to expect that any law that can be used to abuse them will be used to abuse them.

Are gun owners paranoid because we believe gun control laws threaten us?

Dustin Reininger is serving a five-year sentence with a three-year minimum before he’s eligible for parole because he pulled off the highway to get some rest during a long drive. If we are paranoid, it’s because we need to be.

Colorado Springs, Co -(Ammoland.com)- The International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) World Cup series moves on to Munich, Germany this week with 712 rifle and pistol athletes from 79 countries poised to compete. The U.S. has sent a young, but talented squad looking to continue their winning ways featuring recent World Cup USA Men’s 10m Air Pistol gold medalist Will Brown (Twin Falls, Idaho) and Men’s 10m Air Rifle silver medalist Dempster Christenson (Sioux Falls, S.D.).

Will Brown after his gold-medal win at Fort Benning
“I am looking forward to competing again here in Munich,” said Brown; who will compete in the 10m Air and 50m Pistol events. “I am just going to execute my match plan to the best of my abilities and let the results take care of themselves.”

Competition begins Saturday at the Olympic Shooting Range in Munich/Hochbrück with a strong group of eight athletes competing for the U.S. team. Rounding out this young squad will be National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships (NJOSC) gold medalists and National Junior Rifle Team members Ryan Anderson (Fairbanks, Alaska) and Connor Davis (Shelbyville, Ky.).

Anderson, who led the University of Alaska Fairbanks rifle team to a fourth-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Championship, also led the team in both smallbore and air rifle. At NJOSC, he swept the smallbore events with gold in Prone and Three-Position; as well as claimed silver in Men’s 10m Air Rifle.

Davis, a standout at the University of Kentucky, finished fourth in Air Rifle at the 2013 NCAA Championships as well as helped the Wildcats place second as a team. He won gold in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle event at NJOSC. Davis competed in his first World Cup in Ft. Benning and though he was not competing for World Cup points, his score would have qualified him for the Finals.

Other National Junior Rifle Team members representing the U.S. will be Garrett Spurgeon (Canton, Mo.), who helped West Virginia claim its 15th NCAA Rifle Championship earlier this year and 2012 Women’s 10m Air Rifle National Champion Kelsey Emme (Rapid City, S.D.), a sophomore at Murray State.

Along with the youth, the U.S. brings experience in 2012 Olympian and 1996 Olympic silver medalist Emil Milev (Temple Terrace, Fla.), who will compete in the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event. Milev actually won his medal as part of the Bulgarian Olympic Team, having competed in three Olympic Games for his native country before moving to the United States in 2004.

The athletes competing at this World Cup were coach-selected from this spring and summer 2012 events with a focus on athletes best prepared to compete and who can deal with the travel right before the USA Shooting National Championships next month, said USA Shooting’s Director of Operations Dave Johnson. This year’s Nationals will also serve as a selection match for the upcoming World Cup in Granada, Spain in July.

Competitors are still adjusting to the new ISSF rules in place that have brought about the most extensive set of modifications in the sports history while implementing a completely new Finals format. After the qualification rounds, which are conducted under the old rules, the top-eight shooters advance to a semifinal-a new competition stage. The qualification score is not carried forward as all the semifinalists start from zero. The new rules push even greater drama on the final stages. The ISSF feels that the changes make medal decisions easier to understand, thus enhancing the viewing excitement for both spectators and TV audience.

After two World Cup events in Fort Benning and Changwon, Korea, China continues to lead the medal standings with a total of 15 medals, including six gold and eight silver. Germany remains in second place with five gold, two silver and one bronze.

Biloxi, Mississippi – (Ammoland.com) - I begin this piece not with malice or antagonism in my heart, but with genuine concern. For nearly thirty years I’ve carried a firearm professionally and for better than two decades I’ve been involved in teaching others to do the same. I’ve written innumerable articles, papers, and even a couple of books that centered on the use of arms. More importantly, I’ve had the privilege to attend myriad professional schools and training academies to include those run by the U.S. military and state law enforcement as well as those operated privately. The great fortune to train with some of the leading firearms instructors in the world has befallen me.

The previous information was offered as an attempt to assuage the knee-jerk reactions of some who may feel that what follows is a deliberate attempt to insult their religion. Yes, the term ‘religion’ is used quite deliberately, as many gun owners and toters defend their choice of hardware and employment of said hardware with the zeal of one who is protecting the honor of their chosen faith. Insult is not my intent though I do fear it is inevitable.

To Make the Fluid Rigid

While the use of paraphrase is never as valid as a direct quote, I believe I can be forgiven in this instance as I cannot seem to put my hands on my copy of The Tao of Jeet Kune Do by Bruce Lee. As I recall, Lee expressed frustration with the way the martial arts were being delivered and taught to Westerners in the United States. Lee expressed that the, then contemporary, instructors had taken that which was once fluid and forced it into a strict mold, they’d made it rigid.

That was not to say that the modern instructors of his day did not possess skill, they indeed did. But, these men had become masters of repetitive movement and had turned what was once a dynamic form of physical combat into a regimented game. If your aim is be the very best at a game or a sport, there is certainly no shame in that endeavor. The folly comes when skill at sport is confused with skill in mortal combat.

In his Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto Musashi offers a warning that, “The ‘Way’ cannot be learned through frivolous contests in which the outcome is for the name of a school or a large trophy. It can only be realized where physical death is a reality.” What does all this martial arts, Eastern mumbo-jumbo have to do with good ole fashion American gunfighting? I’m glad you asked.

Motion for Motion’s Sake

There has been an ongoing trend in the firearm training community to add or insert heretofore unheard of or unforeseen techniques in order make the shooting stance or method “look better”. It’s a bit of the “New and Improved Tide” syndrome. That is, if it’s new it’s got to be better. Motions that were once simple and uncomplicated now become complex and multifaceted.

In order to dazzle the audience, extra movements, gyrations and theatrics are added. That which was once a lackluster shooting demonstration now becomes a super-cool, totally ninja exhibition. My good friend Jay Gibson put it to me this way. “That movement isn’t for the shooter’s benefit. It’s for the benefit of those watching the shooter.”

It’s tough to fault these schools and instructors for adding ninja moves to their shooting techniques. After all, the consumer craves ‘new and improved’, they want to be dazzled. If you don’t dazzle them, they won’t buy the product. Again referring back to games versus combat, if playing a shooting sport is your goal, mastery of extraneous and complex moves is really not that big of a deal. Drive on brother and have fun.

Jay Rocks The Mic

The Deadly Conundrum

When faced with the harsh reality of mortal combat and the potential of losing one’s life, playing games and engaging in some kind of tactical kabuki dance can be quite perilous. Here’s an example; while instructing at the Expeditionary Combat Skills School for the U.S. Military I encountered a student who, when his pistol ran dry, would eject the empty magazine into his support hand and then deliberately throw it behind him, sometimes several yards, before reaching for a loaded magazine to refill his gun. We did not teach that in our school.

After watching the young trooper do this a few times I walked up behind him and in the most consoling voice I could muster whispered in his ear; “Are those magazines evil?” He turned and looked at me with astonishment and said “No.” “Then why are you trying so hard to cast them behind you?” I queried.

“I don’t want to risk stepping on them and lose my balance.” He replied. It seemed that at a previous school throwing empty magazines was a technique they’d be taught. Big deal you say. Let the kid throw his magazines, what’s it hurting? Answer: On the square range it doesn’t hurt a thing and gives you extra PT time as you search for your gear after the drill is complete.

However, the purpose of our training was preparation for mortal combat. In a gunfight if your blaster stops making noise and the bad guys are still standing you have a problem. Priority Number 1 is to get something in your hands that will continue to make noise and inflict harm upon the bad men. The general solution is to retrieve more ammo, stick it in your gun and drive on in the most expeditious manner possible. Wasting precious moments to cast your magazine far from your body would seem a superfluous act, especially considering the fact that unless you are behind solid cover you will likely be moving your feet, not standing still on the square range.

Another thorn under my saddle is the schools that teach: Tactical, Combat, Emergency, and Administrative loading of self-loading firearms. The student is taught three or four different methods for charging their blaster. During the high anxiety of a lethal force encounter, or even a stress filled training exercise, when said student’s firearm stops making noise they go through an exercise in mental jumping jacks to determine which of the multiple ways of putting ammunition back in the gun is appropriate according to the previously received instruction. Invariably, when this was the programming a student had undergone I would witness a brief but discernible ‘vapor lock’ while the student made a self-correction so as not to feel like they were “doing it wrong”.

This is not Paul Markel’s snarky opinion. If you teach someone three methods for accomplishing the same task, under stress they will have to make some kind of decision as to which method is correct. Instead of continuing to fight, they are second guessing or pausing to consider their options. Again, on the one-way shooting range it’s no biggie, on the two-way shooting range not so much.

Another concern is the “tactical walking” concept. Again, in the Book of 5 Rings, Musashi states that, “There is no difference in walking and running in battle and walking and running everyday life except for speed.” You spend your entire life walking one way and then only a miniscule amount walking in combat. To attempt to alter the way your body moves during the stress of a fight is a recipe for disaster.

To offer an additional real life example, I was coaching a student during a shoot and move exercise against steel silhouettes. The student would shoot two silhouettes a minimum of two times each and then quickly move to the next set of targets. My pupil was moving along briskly, striking each target, clang, clang…clang, clang. Suddenly, a range officer came running up and yelled “Cease fire!” My kid froze in place. “What’s up?” I asked. “His feet are wrong.” The man stated. I was speechless.

My student was hitting each target without a problem but this guy wanted him to stop and ‘fix’ his feet. What was the point of the exercise; to hit the target or to walk and stand in a certain way? Are we teaching close order drill or fighting?

Wax A Chump Like A Candle

Fighting or Ball Room Dancing

Going back to our martial arts example, Bruce Lee was frustrated at what he saw as an over-exaggeration of form versus function. What was more important, how the person looked when he threw the punch or how effective the punch was? In the Western martial art of Gunfighting, what is more important, how you look on the square range or how effectively you strike the target with your rounds? Do we get extra style points in combat? Will the enemy be so impressed by your Tactical Kabuki Dance that they wilt and surrender?

Rather than add extraneous movements and flashy ninja techniques to our shooting method, I would suggest that we instead remove any and all movement that does not add to the overall effectiveness of the mission; delivering rounds on target efficiently.

Max Michel, the National and World Speed Shooting champion can deliver rounds on target faster than most human beings on the planet. To the tactical ninja crowd, Mr. Michel’s form would seem a bit benign. Max’ movements are direct and deliberate. There is not one single extra, flashy or extraneous action in his form. Max built his shooting method on the foundation of balance, economy of motion, and working with the natural tendencies of the human body, not against them, and with great success I might add.

Sports, games, and ball room dancing can all be enjoyable activities and I fully endorse them. Nonetheless, do not confuse success in sport or even on the static, square range with success in the most dynamic, fluid and potentially deadly activity you may be forced to undertake. Thus ends the reading.

*Credit to my good friend, Jay Gibson, for teaching me how to put the thing in the thing and pull on the thing.

NEWTOWN, Conn --(Ammoland.com)- The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia today dismissed a lawsuit brought by the radical anti-hunting Center for Biological Diversity and six other groups demanding the Environmental Protection Agency ban traditional ammunition containing lead components.

Traditional ammunition represents 95 percent of the U.S. market and is the staple ammunition for target shooters, hunters and law enforcement, with more than 10 billion rounds sold annually.

NSSF filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit last August. The court today agreed with NSSF that EPA does not have the authority to regulate traditional ammunition under the Toxic Substances Control Act.

EPA had already twice denied attempts by CBD to have the agency ban traditional ammunition, and the court had dismissed an earlier case brought by CBD seeking the same relief.

“We are gratified that the court has found this second frivolous lawsuit, which is essentially the same as the one dismissed last year, was equally without merit,” said Lawrence G. Keane, senior vice president and general counsel for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry. “This was a waste of taxpayers’ dollars and EPA resources spent in having to defend a baseless lawsuit.”

CBD’s serial petitioning of EPA and its repeated lawsuits were designed to cripple the shooting sports in America by banning the ammunition that millions of hunters and target shooters choose to use safely and responsibly.

“There is quite simply no sound science that shows the use of traditional ammunition has harmed wildlife populations or that it presents a health risk to humans who consume game taken with such ammunition,” said Keane. “Banning traditional ammunition would cost tens of thousands of jobs in America and destroy wildlife conservation that is funded in part by an 11 percent excise tax on the sale of ammunition. The protection and management of wildlife is properly handled by the professional biologists in the state fish and game agencies, as it has been for over a hundred years.

In addition to NSSF, the National Rifle Association, Safari Club International and the Association of Battery Recyclers intervened in the case.

Organizations that joined CBD in its lawsuit were the Cascades Raptor Center of Oregon, the Loon Lake Loon Association of Washington, Preserve Our Wildlife of Florida, Tennessee Ornithological Society, Trumpeter Swan Society and Western Nebraska Resources Council.

NSSF was represented by Roger Martella and Christopher Bell from Sidley Austin.

About NSSF
The National Shooting Sports Foundation is the trade association for the firearms industry. Its mission is to promote, protect and preserve hunting and the shooting sports. Formed in 1961, NSSF has a membership of more than 8,000 manufacturers, distributors, firearms retailers, shooting ranges, sportsmen’s organizations and publishers.
Lawsuit Filed Against Illegal Background Check Fees

Connecticut Carry

Torrington, CT -(Ammoland.com)- In Connecticut Carry’s ongoing efforts to educate and to protect the rights of the citizens in Connecticut to bear arms, our legal counsel Attorney Rachel Baird has filed a lawsuit against the Connecticut DESPP and the town of Torrington for illegal collections of fees regarding pistol permits and the right to carry firearms.

Since October 1st, 2009 the Department of Public Safety (now the DESPP) has conspired with local issuing authorities across Connecticut to collect a $50 fee for each Connecticut State Pistol Permit state background check. In the town of Torrington alone, there have been $22,250 in fees collected.

Statewide, this results in over $1 million of background check fees state wide being illegally collected.

The DESPP has alleged repeatedly that they are entitled to this money, even though the Connecticut General Statutes make clear that the local issuing authorities are requesting the background checks and that they are exempt from the fees.

Connecticut Carry challenged this fee by issuing a cease and desist order to the local issuing authorities and to the DESPP. The Town of Windsor published a favorable opinion to each permit applicant that states that they agree that the fee has no basis in law, but that the DESPP might ‘deny’ permits based on this omission. Many towns and the DESPP have continued to collect this fee despite being informed of the legal issues with the collection.
In response to a FOI request for data related to information on this fee being collected in March, 2012 the DESPP destroyed documents after receiving FOI requests for the records from both Connecticut Carry and American News and Information Services.

In the recent 2013 legislative session, the DESPP requested and received a bill (SB 969) that would allow them to collect this fee, admitting that they lacked the statutory authority to collect the fee in the first place. This proposed legislation followed the cease and desist order from Connecticut Carry.

From the DESPP’s legislative proposal:
“[u]nder existing law all criminal history records checks coming from other agencies are not subject to any state fees.”

Confirming the intentions for the new statutory fee, and bringing into scrutiny DESPP’s current requests for further funding, the DESPP uses as a justification:
[the] “statutory change would create a new and appropriate revenue stream.”

This revenue stream would lack accountability since it was not defined via statute. Despite the DESPP collecting over $1 million dollars in unauthorized fees, they have continually fallen behind in their state background checks for pistol permits causing undue delays in pistol permit issuances.

The actions by the Connecticut DESPP are outrageous, especially when evaluated in parallel to the current requests by the DESPP for more funding and employees because of the completely unreasonable delays in the pistol permit process for applicant statewide.

Trenton, NJ --(Ammoland.com)-As we pause for Memorial Day weekend, consider where we’ve been the last five months, where we are right now, and where we are headed as the legislative session draws to its customary close at the end of June.

Since January, more than 80 anti-gun bills have been introduced in the legislature, comprising the worst attacks on firearms owners in state history. That number still continues to increase to this day.

In February, Assembly Democrats rammed through 24 of these bills, despite a massive outcry from gun owners, a record-setting turnout at a “kangaroo-court” committee hearing, and a well-attended rally on the same day as one of the Northeast’s worst snow storms ever. The defining event of that period was the moment, during a 7-hour Assembly committee hearing, when the chairman actually said that public testimony would be heard “after we vote,” revealing the hearing process as a complete sham.

Democratic Leadership in the Senate took note of the absurd process in the Assembly and the massive outcry from gun owners, promising a slower, fairer, and more deliberative process in the Senate. Instead of ramming legislation through in March, they instead took the time to meet with representatives of gun owners and sportsmen (and also with anti-gun groups) in March and April.

Although gun owner concerns were heard repeatedly and forcefully during these meetings, the end result was that most of the anti-gun agenda would still move to Senate committee, with only a few minor changes to make the bills slightly “less bad” (instead of eliminating attacks on the law-abiding and shifting the focus onto punishment of those who misuse firearms). The general consensus among those involved in this process is that anti-gunners got over 90% of what they sought, while gun owners and sportsmen got less than 10% of what they sought.

In late April and early May, multiple Senate committee hearings were scheduled to move the package of gun bills. The first two hearings were very well attended by gun owners, and the proceedings were marred by some rancor and unfortunate ejections of members of the public. Minor amendments were made to several bills based on gun owner testimony, but some of those amendments actually made the bills worse.

One defining moment of the Senate hearings came as State Police surrounded upset citizens who complained that testimony was being cut off before they could testify. In solidarity, the entire audience stood up and spontaneously recited the pledge of allegiance, as many of the committee members sat silently in their chairs.

Another defining moment included the notorious “hot mic” incident of May 9, in which the official state recording of a committee hearing continued to run after the meeting ended, capturing three Senators discussing gun confiscation and disparaging gun owner motives. That story went viral nationally and a YouTube video featuring the recording has been viewed nearly 200,000 times.

The end of the road in the Senate was supposed to be the May 13 full voting session, but Senate Democrats’ own rush to move these bills that day came back to bite them badly as they realized that several of their signature pieces of legislation needed last minute amendments, requiring “emergency” consent of Republican leadership under Senate rules. Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean, Jr. (R-21) refused to consent, delaying a Senate vote on these bills until the next scheduled voting session (May 30).

The delay is significant, as it puts off final reconciliation of these bills in the Assembly until late June, which in turn means that Governor Christie could postpone final action on bills that come to his desk until deep into summer or later, when the legislature will be out of session and into campaign mode for the upcoming election.

Senate Minority Leader Kean’s courageous action was not without consequences. Senate President Stephen Sweeney, outraged that his signature piece of legislation was derailed from its fast track, retaliated by blocking the movement of all republican bills for the foreseeable future, pouring fuel on an already smoldering feud between the two legislators. Minority Leader Kean’s support of Sweeney’s Republican challenger Niki Trunk in the November election is a key point of contention.

Recent editorials sharply criticizing Sweeney for the retaliation have been published by the traditionally liberal Morris Daily Record and The Bergen Record (see editorials hereand here).

ANJRPC is using the current delay to press Democratic leadership to move proactive bills addressing longstanding issues plaguing honest gun owners, including an “Aitken’s Law” concept (to prevent law-abiding gun owners from being turned into criminals for hypertechnical violations of New Jersey’s extreme gun laws); enforcement of the 30-day firearms permitting deadline already required by statute but regularly ignored by permitting authorities; and extension of handgun permit expiration to one year. So far, a small group of gun ban extremists in the legislature have stonewalled these reasonable, common-sense proposals that have no downside to anyone, revealing their utter contempt and ill will toward law-abiding gun owners.

We expect the legislature to complete passage of its entire package of gun bills by the end of June. Between now and then, some of the bills will gradually dribble onto the Governor’s desk (three are already there now), but the entire package will be before Governor Christie by late June. We do not anticipate that the Governor will take action before July on any of the bills that reach his desk.

Right now the action remains in the Senate and the Assembly, and that is where gun owner attention needs to remain focused for the time being. We will be issuing detailed alerts in the coming weeks about upcoming Senate and Assembly action, including full Senate and Assembly floor votes, and possible additional committee hearings that may precede them.

One of the largest challenges we now face is gun owner fatigue. The process over the past five months has been relentless, and many gun owners are exhausted from the many calls to action that they have answered. It is critical that gun owners remain active and engaged in the process until the very end, and continue to focus their energy where and when it is needed in the legislative process.

Every effort makes a difference, even if it seems futile. Consider that the efforts made in the Assembly in February slowed things down in the Senate in March, April and May. The efforts you make now in the Senate will impact what happens over the summer. The strength of organizations like ANJRPC and NRA resides solely in the membership – very little can be accomplished without members who are willing to sacrifice and answer the call, repeatedly, even when it seems like it is not making an immediate difference. So rest and recharge this weekend, and get ready to hit the ground running after the holiday!

Columbia, Missouri – -(NRAblog.com)- As Thursday’s sun set upon the Green Valley Rifle and Pistol Club, Iain Harrison sat comfortably in the lead for NRA’s 2013 Bianchi Cup Championship. Even then he knew the lead was fleeting.

As winner of the History Channel’s first season of Top Shot, Harrison knows a little something about shooting competitions. He also knows that his final numbers are not enough. Those fresh on his heels (including defending Bianchi champ Doug Koenig) still have one more stage left to shoot while Harrison has none. When all is said and done, they will have no problem overtaking Harrison’s 315 point lead.

Harrison is also firing in the Metallic category. In the Metallic category, competitors are limited to metallic sights. Though commendable, it puts him at a disadvantage when going up against those in the Open category who are shooting with optical sights. The top shooters behind him? All are in the Open category. One way or another, they are going to end the match with much higher scores.

At the head of those on Harrison’s heels are Doug Koenig, Bruce Piatt and Carl Bernosky. Three of the world’s best. These men are only separated by a handful of X’s. Their final event for the match is the Moving Target stage. If history is any lesson, the final day of competition will end with one of their names on the cup.

This isn’t the first time the championship was decided at the wire, which is why Bianchi officials always place the previous year’s top shooters in the same squad. That way, they ensure a touch of tension, along with a considerable crowd, for the final event.

“It’s great to watch these guys go through Moving Target one at a time to close out the championship,” said Assistant Match Director Damien Orsinger. “The suspense really captivates the crowd. It’s unbelievably loud for the final shots.”

No matter who finishes on top, at least Harrison can lay claim to the Day Two lead. And at the MidwayUSA/NRA Bianchi Cup, where victories are few and far between, any victory is a good victory.

Here’s where we are as the final day of competition begins:

The following day in the same blind location, three toms were not buying what I was selling and safely slipped away. The excitement of the close call enticed me into a return visit the following day.

But, when a logger and a pair of draft horses interrupted the session at 7am, it was time to relocate. With the Looking Glass River running through the property, I’d move my hideout to the opposite side of the waterway, thus providing the perfect, natural division between commotion and solitude.

However, by the time I had gathered my senses and gear and returned to establish a new stand, the log-dragging operation beat me to the opposite side of the river. It was time for a talk.

The young loggers more than had their hands full, as I watched two inexperienced one-ton animals fighting their handlers. Over and over, the animals backed up to a log, while a horseman/logger attempted to set the huge tongs into a log, only to hang on helplessly, as the animals bolted away log-less dragging them along.

To complicate matters, mosquitos were fighting the men, too. I gave them some mosquito repellant and learned of their plan to finish that day.

Heartened by the news, I set up my surveillance PlotWatcher camera to learn if there were any birds on this side of the river. Reviewing the recorded action days later on the computer screen, a lone gobbler could be seen strutting his stuff in the early morning hours.

Inexplicably, many of the massive logs remained in the field, contrary to what I had been told. Obviously, the loggers were not able to get their horses to cooperate and had given up long before completing their work.

My friend, Joe, and I set up a larger blind so that we could hunt as a team on the weekend. Before our morning together had come to an end, I worked a vocal gobbler for some time, but I couldn’t coax him from the security of the forest.

Days later, the loggers then demonstrated their own persistence and returned to finish the job. Well, almost. The camera showed one huge maple log remaining at the end of the day – the day before my next planned hunt.

Would the loggers be back in prime time the following day? Heck, would the woods ever settle down? There’d be only one way to find out.

I could only hope I’d get another chance. At 6:25 am, a bold tom gobbled from the forest floor, as I dished out some soft talk via my favorite call: A Ring Zone slate call given to me by the inventor, Jim Moss.

He was close enough to hear my muted purrs and gobbled his way closer to fate. At last, the call was set down in exchange for my Browning Silver in 3 ½” 12 gauge. My lone hen decoy was placed purposely in front of the massive log left 30 yards in front of me in an effort to direct a tom to the shooting side.

The bearded turkey entered the field and appeared to be on a mission away from my decoy and before it could stroll out of range, at 36 yards a load of 2 ¼ oz. of number 6 shot made persistence pay off.

The two year-old turkey sported small spurs and a 10 7/16” beard.

Long after I’ve enjoyed the last of a wild turkey dinner, however, this bird will be a reminder of Ben Franklin’s wisdom.

Wisconsin --(Ammoland.com)- We buried another veteran today.
He went to his God, from us, he went away.
This one was young, in the prime of his life.
He left twin children and a very courageous wife.

It wasn’t a bullet, a plane crash or a bomb.
It was cancer, and he just finally, could not hold on.
He fought “it” like a military campaign.
But the time came to surrender, to end his earthly pain.

He knew he would be fine in the presence of his Lord.
But what about his twins, those children he adored?
Will they grow strong and at “life” win.
Please God, let them always remember him.

We buried another veteran today.
It seems, all my life, it has happened this way.
From my uncles of the WW II-time frame.
To the military friends, Vietnam would claim.

For me the number of dead, is always on the rise.
When I get a call another veteran is gone, it is never really a surprise.
From lost sub-mariners, in early days of my life.
To the forever gone, military-medical friends of my veteran wife.

I lost a Korean War veteran friend this year, to a crashed airplane.
I lost a Gulf War friend to cancer, a difference in their age, but still that pain.
I lost an Uncle to cancer who did Korea with the Navy, steaming off shores.
I lost my father-in-law who fought in Korea, from a “fox-hole” in the
frozen outdoors.

We buried another Veteran today.
It seems in all my family’s generations, it happens this way.
From my Revolutionary War Grandfathers who started this sad, but needed trend.
To the family members on both sides in 1861, who just would not bend.

Some of my family lived a long and happy life, after “their” war.
They died of old age in their bed, safe-behind a locked door.
They died in battle, buried where they fell.
They died years later, carrying emotional scars, in their own personal hell.

My family is no different than thousands who met our Nation’s call.
They rose to the demands of this country and some gave their “all“.
We have to continue doing this, to make America free.
But, it’s that Veteran’s twin-little children that keeps worrying me.

We buried another Veteran today.
It seems all my life it continues this way.
Now my only child is nine and we reside on a military installation.
My wife and I truly want her to live safe, in a free nation.

But what happens, when it is her-generation’s turn to make a stand.
Do we lose our only child in some forsaken-foreign land?
Does she play it safe, stay home and say “that’s boy’s stuff”.
Or does she join like her mother and go right into the ruff.

She has to be that one Veteran I don’t see, make that final “call“.
Let me go before her, let me first give this country my fighting “all“.
Maybe if I go “out-there” and make my final stand.
She can stay safe-at-home, in this wonderful free land.

WE BURIED ANOTHER VETERAN TODAY

Columbia, Missouri – -(NRAblog.com)- Scores are out for the first day of shooting at the MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup and they’re just what we expected as defending Champion Doug Koenig captured the Practical Event lead with a 480-45x. Just three x-ring hits short of a completely perfect score, Koenig made the most of his opening day.

Despite his practically perfect performance, Koenig is not in the lead. He isn’t even in the top five. It’s not a performance issue, it’s a procedural one.

Bianchi is a three-day event. A three-day event in which four stages are shot. Yesterday, for example, our defending champ was shooting Practical. Today he will shoot Barricade and Falling Plate. On Friday, the final day, Doug will make his final charge on title 15 while going headfirst into Moving Target.

This is true for most shooters. Not that they’ll be making a charge for the title on Moving Target Friday, but that they will, as some point, shoot two events in one day. That’s why the overall rankings/scores may look a bit off at the moment.

That isn’t to say that the shooters who started the day on top are bad. Everyone there maxed out on points while jockeying though x’s. The leaderboard will continue to change the next couple days as shooters complete each of the four events … just don’t be surprised to see a few of today’s leaders back on top when everything’s done.

And while the final results are likely to come down to the x’s, don’t forget that a single slip-up can throw them far down the list and out of contention.

Here is the total aggregate’s leaderboard following Day 1:

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- Rising country music star Kevin Fowler was the opening act for the “NRA Country Jam” at this year’s NRA Annual Meetings in Houston.

Fowler is an unabashed supporter of NRA and the Second Amendment, and he’ll gladly let you know that, graphically and in no uncertain terms. Fowler recently weighed in on the gun control debate during an exclusive interview with TheBlaze.

In the interview, Fowler said the U.S. already has plenty of gun laws on the books, and that those laws are just not properly enforced.

“If you want to kill people, you can do it with a fork, you can do it with something you can buy at the hardware store, you can do it with a gun, you can do it with a knife, you can do it with a car, you can do it with a truck, you can do it however you want to,” Fowler explained, stressing the importance of addressing the nation’s mental health problem.

Fowler noted that he was raised around firearms, and has plenty of guns, but according to the article, they don’t sprout legs and go off and kill people.

The premier riflescope in the Leupold® catalog, the VX-6 brings a 6X magnification range, delivering unmatched clarity and utility in a single riflescope.

Outdoor Life editor Andrew McKean wrote that the VX-6 “delivers a crisp, bright image across the power range, its controls are precise, and its illumination system is intuitive.”

In addition, the editors at Binoculars.com have bestowed the Binocular of the Year title on the new BX-4 McKinley HD binoculars.

The BX-4 mates new extra-low dispersion objective lenses with rare earth element-coated ocular lenses to provide superb color rendition, exceptional low-light visibility and superb color rendition.

Available in 8x or 10x magnification, the BX-4 features 42mm objective lenses; multi-staged, variable height eyecups; and a responsive, fast-focus central focus dial.

A strong, lightweight magnesium alloy chassis delivers unsurpassed durability and rugged utility in the field. Leupold’s second-generation water and fog proofing ensures crystal-clear vision in any weather condition.

Finally, the readers of Predator Xtreme magazine have selected Leupold as the Riflescope manufacturer of the year in its first Readers Choice Awards. Leupold also received bronze medals in the binocular and rangefinder categories.

Abilene, Texas --(Ammoland.com)- It’s built like a tank, maximizes accuracy, is modular, uniquely mitigates recoil, and if looks could kill there’d be no need for a barreled action in it.

It is the Cadex Defense Strike Dual chassis.

Yes, I know, it sounds like propaganda. But seriously, when we set out to transform Grandpa’s Gun into a tactical long range precision rifle capable shooting wild hogs and other game at 1000+ yards, we asked “What does it take to do it right, to take this project as far as we can go with it?”

We chose parts that we think you’d want to use, and went from there. Starting with Part 1 of this Grandpa’s Gun Reborn project, you’ve already read about our selection of a Timney Trigger and Nighforce Scope. Now it’s time explore the Strike Dual Chassis from Cadex Defense.

Augusta, GA --(Ammoland.com)- Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA) and Pinetucky Gun Club near Augusta, GA co-hosted their 3rd 3-gun match featuring 2-man teams comprised of a disabled veteran/injured military person and a club member sponsor in a full day event that featured teamwork, marksmanship, great BBQ and good fellowship.

This popular event has been a staple on the club’s calendar since 2010, and allows the disabled veteran or injured military personnel and member the opportunity to share their enthusiasm for shooting sports. These were classic trap, rifle and pistol stages, and each wounded warrior received a gift bag full of valuable outdoor accessories.

“Having the HAVA event return to our club each year is a highlight for us,” said Pinetucky Club Manager Steve Meldrum. “Our members are proud to each host one of these American heroes, and its fun to watch the teamwork that develops between partners from very different backgrounds and generations. HAVA has the right idea about helping these guys with their rehab – get them outside with a gun and watch the confidence grow. These are accomplished people that have suffered great personal tragedies and our members are proud to express America’s thanks.”

“The folks at Pinetucky have certainly made the veterans feel welcome each year,” said HAVA Chairman Tom Taylor. “And the team competition is always a hit as we watch that camaraderie grow throughout the day. Many of these wounded warriors have spent months in hospital wards or recovery and really enjoy just being part of a team again in the outdoors. We believe in the therapeutic benefit of active outdoor sports, and our veteran guests invariably express how empowered they feel after such an invigorating day of competition.”

DALLAS TX --(Ammoland.com)- Fifteen junior shotgun team athletes from USA Shooting will get the chance to compete at the 2013 World Clay Target Championships in Lima, Peru, this September as a result of a grant provided by the Dallas Safari Club (DSC).

The latest in a long line of vital support and contribution provided by DSC, the grant will aid USA Shooting in getting the world’s strongest shotgun program to participate at full strength with an open and junior team capable of a heavy medal haul in men’s and women’s skeet and trap as well as men’s double trap.

This year’s World Clay Target Championship team was recently selected during the 2013 Spring Selection Match, May 10-20 in Ft. Benning, Ga. For a recap of the event and for a list of upcoming World Cup and World Championship team members, click here: http://bit.ly/13GD0It

This year’s DSC donation to the USA Shooting Team Foundation is the fourth straight year in which the conservation and hunting organization has stepped up to provide significant contributions to benefit USA Shooting athletes. In 2010, DSC provided financial support for the junior team attending the 2012 World Shooting Championships in Munich, which helped lead the team to 14 overall medals including two individual titles, and one team gold medal.

USA Shooting

DSC also previously helped fund junior participation at the 2011 World Shotgun Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, and the junior team delivered with six medals overall. Eight of the junior team athletes sponsored by DSC then are back to compete in their second World Championships, either as junior or open athletes.

Last year, the USA Shooting Team secured exclusive use of a shooting range in Denmark for a pre-Olympic Games Training Camp, thanks to a contribution from DSC. The range was specifically dedicated for use by the USA Shooting Team for training around the clock in a distraction-free environment. In addition, the camp was used to enhance team unity and camaraderie as well as solidify the athlete support structure.

DSC is an international leader in conservation, education and hunter advocacy. Most members of the current USA Shooting Team are active hunters and anglers, blending a passion for the outdoors with winning on the world stage.

“Our ongoing support for America’s Olympic hopefuls is a genuine source of pride for our members and our entire organization,” said Ben Carter, DSC executive director. “We’re proud to help these fine young ambassadors pursue their dreams and represent our country while flying the flag for outdoor and sporting lifestyles.”

DSC sponsorships are reciprocated by shooting team members assisting with DSC conventions, youth education events, public exhibits and more.

“The continued support and dedication shown to us by the Dallas Safari Club has given this generation of athletes a tremendous boost to their training and competitive abilities,” said Buddy DuVall, USA Shooting Team Foundation executive director. “USA Shooting is especially grateful to DSC members for the contributions they make to better our organization and in assisting our athletes in becoming the best in the world.”

Editors Note: Additive manufacturing or 3D printing[1] is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object of virtually any shape from a digital model. 3D printing is achieved using an additive process, where successive layers of material are laid down in different shapes.[2] 3D printing is considered distinct from traditional machining techniques, which mostly rely on the removal of material by methods such as cutting or drilling (subtractive processes).A materials printer usually performs 3D printing processes using digital technology. Since the start of the twenty-first century there has been a large growth in the sales of these machines, and their price has dropped substantially.[3]

The technology is used for both prototyping and distributed manufacturing in jewelry, footwear, industrial design, architecture, engineering and construction (AEC), automotive, aerospace, dental and medical industries, education, geographic information systems, civil engineering, and many other fields.

Florida Carry

Florida - -(Ammoland.com)- Florida Carry, Inc., filed an action to stop Daytona Beach’s illegal practice of refusing to return firearms to people, including veterans, who were Baker Acted but found to be no danger to themselves or others.

For too long, many jurisdictions throughout Florida have refused to follow the law.

In 2009 the Florida Attorney General made clear in an opinion that the continued detention of firearms after a person was released without being found to be a danger to themselves or others was prohibited by Florida law.

Despite the clear instruction from the Attorney General and the legal prohibition on creating their own firearms rules since 1987, these individuals and agencies who have sworn to uphold the law, have instead violated the law and the Constitutional rights of law-abiding Florida gun owners.

It is time to hold these jurisdictions responsible and require that these people in authority follow the laws they swore an oath to uphold and enforce.

As we previously reported, an honorably discharged combat vet called a veteran’s assistance hotline for someone to talk to. Instead of finding the sympathetic and understanding ear of a fellow vet, the VA hotline worker got the police to come out and take this man who has stood in defense of our country from his home and submit him for mental evaluation. The police officers also seized his firearms, bows, arrows, ammo and protective equipment. One talk with a qualified mental health professional was all it took for the doctor to determine that the vet was never a threat to himself or anyone else.

Now the police department refuses to give this man who has stood watch for our defense his guns back despite numerous previous court decisions and instructions from the Florida Attorney General that all instruct that his property should be immediately returned.

This problem has been found statewide and Florida Carry got involved in this case to protect the rights of all Floridians. The denial of personal property rights without just cause and the denial of the right to bear arms without due process of law must end now.

The case filing can be read here: Complaint_A.B_and_FL_Carry_v_Daytona

About:
Florida Carry is a non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots organization dedicated to advancing the fundamental civil right of all Floridians to keep and bear arms for self defense as guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution and Article I Section 8 of the Florida Constitution. Florida Carry, Inc. was organized by a group of Florida gun rights activists in order to better coordinate activities, effectively lobby the state legislature, and to provide a legal entity capable of filing suit to demand compliance with state and federal law. Florida Carry stands only to represent our members and the over 6 million gun owners of Florida. We are not beholden to any national organization’s agenda that may compromise that mission.
Florida Carry works tirelessly toward repealing and striking down ill-conceived gun control laws that have been proven to provide safe havens to criminals and be deadly to law abiding citizens.

ACCOKEEK, MD --(Ammoland.com)- Beretta USA was honored during the recent 142nd Annual NRA Meetings and Exhibits in Houston, TX when presented with the “Editor’s Choice Award” by Outdoor Life for the new A400 Action 20ga.

Outdoor Life editors summed up the features of the A400 Action 20 ga. best when citing their reasons behind the award, “this 20-gauge from Beretta, the first sub-gauge in the A400 series, is brimming with amenities and useful features.

The kick-off system is one of the better recoil-reducing designs on the market, and by adding it to this shotgun Beretta has made an outstanding semi-auto for high-volume bird shooting. ….We liked the looks of the gun too. The finish on the receiver is distinctive without being tacky, and the grain-enhancing finish on the wood gives it a classy look. It also shouldered, swung, and shot like a dream. For all these reasons, the A400 XPLOR Action is our Editor’s Choice shotgun for 2013.”

“This recognition, especially considering the quality and depth of the competition, is very gratifying,” says Ryan Muety, Vice President of Brand and Channel Marketing. “Beretta continues to invest significant time and resources to ensure that our shotguns meet and exceed our customers’ expectations. It was only natural that we chose to expand the exceptionally popular A400 Xplor line to include a sub-gauge appropriate to the upland market where the A400 Action excels.

Muety went on to add that, “as a 500-year-old company, our history, heritage and lifestyle are sacred to the Beretta brand and to be recognized for it by one’s peers makes it resonate all the more.”

Outdoor Life honors the industry’s best with their yearly “Gun Test” which are determined through a rigorous three-step process that includes inspection of the internal components and machining, range performance, and overall design and feature set.

Beretta, established in 1526, is the oldest industrial dynasty in the world tracing its roots through 16 generations of continuous family ownership. Firearms bearing the Beretta name have been sold for almost 500 years. Beretta USA Corp. was founded in 1977 and supplies the standard sidearm to the U.S. Armed Forces. Today, Beretta manufactures, distributes and markets a complete line of firearms, accessories and apparel. Beretta also owns and operates six retail Beretta Gallery stores worldwide.
NEWTOWN, Conn --(Ammoland.com)- New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo invited representatives of the New York State Sheriff’s Association to meet with him and discuss issues with the recently passed “SAFE Act.”

At least that’s what the sheriffs thought the meeting would be about.

But instead, according to this article in the Albany Times Union, Cuomo told the sheriffs to cease and desist expressing their wide-ranging comments in opposition to many of the law’s provisions. “The governor was of the opinion that the sheriffs around the state should not be interjecting their personal opinions in reference to the law,” according to one attendee.

News flash to the governor: That cat is out of the bag, since both the Sheriff’s Association and several individual sheriffs have joined the litigation against the new law. But the governor isn’t out of options yet. No meeting attendee was willing to confirm this, but at least one source says that Cuomo threatened to use an obscure power of the governor’s office to remove sheriffs from office.

New York is not the only state where sheriffs are speaking out against new gun laws. In Colorado, a majority of state sheriffs have joined litigation against new gun laws filed earlier this week. NSSF is also a party to the Colorado lawsuit, and proud to support the sheriffs for pointing out obvious problems with the new law, as noted in this article, which quotes their filing as follows:

“The Sheriffs have limited resources and limited public funds to spend on investigations . . . They cannot expend those resources to conduct investigations that would be necessary to monitor compliance with the new magazine restrictions. No documentation has ever been required for the retail or private purchase of magazines, making it a practical impossibility for the Sheriffs to determine whether one of the many magazines already in existence was obtained after the effective date.”

Of course, we told them that before the law was passed, but Colorado legislators weren’t listening then, any more than Cuomo is willing to hear criticism of his trademark law now. And we recall that Colorado legislators protested comments by state sheriffs in opposition when their new law was under debate.

It is rapidly becoming a hallmark of anti-gun politicians to view the First Amendment with equal disdain as the Second Amendment. Both are “inconvenient truths” in their zeal to enact new restrictions on our rights and our industry.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. --(Ammoland.com)- – Smith & Wesson Corp. today announced that Team Smith & Wesson members captured three national titles in the Overall as well as the Senior and Women’s categories at the 2013 United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) Revolver National Championships.

Top winners included Smith & Wesson Champion Jerry Miculek, who has now earned an unprecedented 11 USPSA Revolver National Titles, and fellow teammate Annette Aysen, who earned her sixth USPSA National Title.

Competing with his famous Smith & Wesson Model 625 revolver, Jerry Miculek once again outpaced the competition by posting top scores in 4 of the 13 stages while placing in the top five on every course of fire. Shooting a penalty free match, Jerry set a new USPSA all-time record with 11 national titles in the revolver division proving once again that he is the top person to beat in any wheel-gun competition. Miculek finished the competition at the top of the Grand Master classification and also won the High Senior title.

Annette Aysen

In the race for the women’s title, it was a clean sweep by Team Smith & Wesson. Defending titleholder Annette Aysen took home top honors and finished the match in 33rd place overall. This marks Annette’s sixth USPA Revolver Ladies National Title, each one earned with her trusted Smith & Wesson Model 625. Following closely behind Aysen were fellow teammates and mother and daughter combo Kay and Lena Miculek. Both Kay and Lena also opted to compete with a Smith & Wesson Model 625 finishing 2nd and 3rd place respectively.

Held at PASA Park in Barry, Illinois, the 2013 USPA Revolver Nationals featured over 100 of the country’s most esteemed revolver shooters. This year’s match challenged competitors with stages involving reactive targets, shooting on the move and the use of both the strong and weak shooting hand.

“On behalf of Smith & Wesson, I would like to extend special congratulations to this year’s Revolver National Champions – Jerry Miculek and Annette Aysen,” said James Debney, President and CEO of Smith & Wesson. “Both Jerry and Annette have a defined skill set that is unparalleled in the ranks of 20,000 USPSA members. Through their hard work and determination, Jerry and Annette continue to find their way back to the winner’s circle and both have served as a respected ambassadors for Smith & Wesson and the shooting sports.”

New Jersey --(Ammoland.com)-From its earliest days, even before the Revolution, Americans valued their newspapers and understood they played a crucial role in the issues and events of the times in which they lived.

It would take a while, however, before newspapers evolved from highly partisan advocates of the early political factions to their role as watchdogs of government.

A literate population depended on them for news that revealed the increasing futility of dealing with a British monarchy and parliament that found new ways to tax the essentially independent colonies. Newspapers became the glue of the new nation, eagerly read in every state, providing news of Congress and the presidency.

By contrast, authoritarian governments understood the need to keep a tight control over the news and none more than the Third Reich of the Nazi Party and in the Soviet Union.

On May 21st, Kirsten Powers, writing in the Daily Beast.com, borrowed from words of pastor Martin Niemoller, a German who witnessed their rise to power and who framed the manner in which the Nazis targeted, jailed and killed all those they deemed enemies of the state.

His poem, “First they came” was echoed by Powers who wrote “First they came for Fox News, and they did not speak out—because they were not Fox News. Then they came for government whistleblowers, and they did not speak out—because they were not government whistleblowers. Then they came for the maker of a YouTube video, and—okay we know how this story ends. But how did we get here?” The “we” to whom she referred are the nation’s journalists.

“Turns out,” said Powers, “it’s a fairly swift sojourn from a president pushing to ‘delegitimize’ a news organization to threatening criminal prosecution for journalistic activity by a Fox News reporter, James Rosen, to spying on Associated Press reporters.”

“Where were the media when all this began happening?” asked Powers. “With a few exceptions, they were acting as quiet enablers.”

State of Deception: Power of Nazi Propaganda learn more at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

This is what I and many other conservative observers and analysts of the President and his administration have been saying since 2009 and earlier.

“These series of ‘warnings’ to the Fourth Estate,” said Powers, “were what you might expect to hear from some third-rate dictator, not from the senior staff of Hope and Change, Inc.”

In his book, Mein Kampf (My Struggle), Hitler demonstrated his contempt for the public. “The receptivity of the great masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan.”

Obama’s 2008 slogan was “hope and change.” He was vague about the change he had in mind, but we have been learning about it since his election.

Hitler and his minister of Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels, set up a department that dealt solely with newspapers. An instructive history of the press in the Third Reich can be found on the website of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

“When Adolf Hitler took power in 1933, the Nazis controlled less than three percent of Germany’s 4,700 newspapers.” The elimination of the German multi-party political system ended hundreds of newspapers that would offer any opposition to the Nazi Party. What followed in the first weeks of 1933 was the systematic use of radio, press, and newsreels to stoke fears of a pending “Communist uprising.” This occurred in a pre-television and, of course, pre-Internet era, but it was effective when backed up by the thuggish behavior of Hitler’s paramilitary units that were used to “brutalize or arrest political opponents and incarcerate them in hastily established detention centers and concentration camps.”

Not unlike the popularity and influence of Fox News, the well-known Berlin daily, the Vossische Zeitung, was targeted, along with the Berlin Tageblatt. The former employed 10,000 people, but in 1933, its owners, the Ullstein family, were forced to resign and, a year later, sell the company assets. The latter newspaper was owned by the Mosse family that published a number of major liberal papers “much hated by the Nazis.” When Hitler took power, the family fled Germany.

This is not to suggest that Fox News or the Associated Press will suffer a similar fate, but it is no accident that their reporters are being intimidated by an administration that has seized telephone records as a message to their owners and editors to curb any criticism, any investigation of what they are doing.

Asserting that James Rosen, a Fox reporter, engaged in criminal behavior for doing what any reporter would do, seek out information about the government, has outraged many in the press, but whether they will stand firm or buckle under remains the real question. In Germany, the press became an arm of the Nazi regime.

If history is any guide, we have real cause to fear the intent of the Obama administration—one now distinguished by its leadership for having no memory of any steps they have undertaken to oppress organizations that oppose its agenda, mobilizing the IRS and Department of Justice.

We are looking into a tyrannical abyss and it is time to be afraid, be very afraid.

LAS VEGAS --(Ammoland.com)- After nearly a decade since its initial introduction into the firearms marketplace, the SLR-106 series is getting a change in to “Collector’s Item.”

Production on the series officially ended.

The SLR-106 rifle and pistol series was Arsenal’s answer to the 5.56 caliber as the company looked to compete in that arena. The years to follow brought much success with several variations and configurations, robust sales and recognition as one of the industry’s best — due in-part to its chrome-lined and hammer-forged barrel.

“In my opinion, the SLR-106 series of rifles, perfectly bridge the gap from east to west. Furthermore, the advancements made in the manufacturing this rifle series will be seen on future models by our company for years to come.” – Walker English, Sales Director, Arsenal, Inc.

A comprehensive audit of the current offerings in the firearms industry, recent trends and near-future shifts with regard to technology and advancement all factored into the decision to discontinue the series. Arsenal’s obligations with military and government contracts, production for the movie industry and commitments to distributors and dealers also shaped this decision.

The current stock of SLR-106 5.56 caliber rifles and pistols will continue to be sold until supply runs out. Arsenal’s availability list is displayed below. Additional SLR-106 products can be found by checking with Arsenal’s distributors and various dealers nationwide.

PROVO, Utah –-(Ammoland.com)- Davis County, Utah, recently welcomed a new kind of business to one of its largest shopping districts. Now you can get all of your grocery shopping done and hit the indoor shooting range all in the same place.

Red Dot Firearms, located just off I-15 exit 331 in Layton, recently opened its retail gun store and a 25 yard indoor shooting range capable of handling both handgun and rifle rounds including .5o BMG.

“We are the only retail firearms store in the area besides some of the big box stores, and we were the first place ever to apply for an indoor range license in the county,” owner Denny Wanlass said. “We felt like it was time people in the area had another option.”

According to Wanlass, many shooters in Utah have started moving their weekend shooting ventures away from public lands due to wildfires and other concerns, which means a higher demand for indoor ranges like Red Dot Firearms.

“A lot of people just drive out to the desert to shoot, but last summer, several wildfires were blamed on target shooting. Whether true or not, it’s still driving many shooters away from the wilderness areas and indoors,” Wanlass said. “That combined with the closures of public land and the increase in gas prices make our indoor range the perfect alternative.”

Shooters transitioning from the outdoors also get the added benefit of a climate controlled environment and a ventilation system installed by Carey’s Small Arms Range Systems that exceeds NIOSH, EPA and OSHA standards.

“We wanted a good ventilation system because we take our customers’ health very seriously,” Wanlass said. “Just about every person who has come out of there has said, ‘I love being in a range where I can breathe!’”

Fellow Utah business Action Target was contracted to install the range equipment at Red Dot Firearms including a 48-foot wide steel funnel bullet trap, armor steel ceiling and wall baffles to prevent rounds from escaping, and shooting stalls capable of stopping rifle rounds from point blank range.

“Throughout the course of our research, it was clear that there really isn’t anyone else besides Action Target that is worth using,” Wanlass said. “The equipment on our range is second to none, and that means our customers can shoot with complete confidence that their safety is never going to be jeopardized.”

Red Dot Firearms is now open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Classes in concealed carry, personal defense, hunter’s safety and more will be held regularly.
