WASHINGTON - Pheasants Forever (PF) will host its fifth National Pheasant Fest this February 6-8, 2009 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wisconsin. Union sportsmen who attend will receive a $2 discount on admission upon showing their union membership card and could win a pheasant hunt when they join the Union Sportsmen’s Alliance (USA).

Nearly 30,000 people attended National Pheasant Fest in the Twin Cities last January, and the event has become the nation’s largest event for upland hunters, farmers, sport dog owners and wildlife habitat conservationists. The family-oriented trade show offers a variety of exhibits, youth attractions and seminars on pheasant hunting, habitat improvement, shooting sports, dog training, wild game cooking and more.

Pheasants Forever has a strong presence in Wisconsin, which is home to 30 PF chapters who have completed more than 15,800 habitat projects in the state. Pheasants Forever is also one of the leading conservation groups that make up the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP), a coalition of conservation groups, labor unions and individuals working to guarantee all Americans quality places to hunt and fish. In 2007, the TRCP launched the USA, a hunting and fishing club exclusively for union members, retirees and their families.

The TRCP-USA will have a booth at National Pheasant Fest to distribute information about its conservation efforts and the union-dedicated hunting and fishing club. Union members who join the USA on-site for a $25 annual membership will be entered in a drawing at the show for a top-notch pheasant hunting trip for two in the fall of 2009.

“National Pheasant Fest is a must-see event for outdoor sportsmen and sportswomen, and Wisconsin can boast having hundreds of thousands of them, many of whom are union members,” said PF President and CEO Howard Vincent.

“The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance, which has grown to nearly 8,000 members in one year, is a great way for union members to get involved with PF and other hunting and fishing organizations to help conserve and enjoy these traditional outdoor sports,” said Jim Klatt, USA regional Coordinator.

Admission to the public event is $10 for a one-day pass and $30 for a three-day pass that includes membership in Pheasants Forever and a PF hat.

About:
Inspired by the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, the TRCP is a coalition of organizations and grassroots partners working together to preserve the traditions of hunting and fishing. The USA is a non-political, hunting and fishing club of the TRCP exclusively for union members, retirees and their families.

USSA’s 2008 Year in Review

U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance

USSA 2008 - Despite the challenges of 2008, the USSA achieved many key victories for sportsmen nationwide. From lowering barriers to new hunters to defending the trapping in Minnesota and Maine, the USSA and the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation (USSAF) were busy on wide range of issues critical to sportsmen. In addition, the USSAF’s flagship education effort, the Trailblazer Adventure Program, reached new heights. Over 175,000 children and their families were introduced to the wonders of outdoor sports. The USSA’s highlights of our year follow. For more information, check out our new Annual Report.

The USSA kicked off its new U.S. Sportsmen’s Alert Network last summer. The program is designed to inform and mobilize sportsmen for action through a series of e-mail Action Alerts, news releases and our weekly On Target e-newsletter. Partner companies and organizations include Remington, Inc., The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), The Master’s of Foxhounds Association of America, and The Wild Sheep Foundation. The Alert Networks is already reaching out to nearly 400,000 sportsmen.

Through the combined efforts of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the NWTF, and the USSA, the national Families Afield Program chalked up eight more victories this year in: Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Virginia. Families Afield is a full scale, national effort to counteract declining sportsmen’s numbers. The program works in the legislatures and before regulatory agencies to eliminate restrictive rules that impede new hunters.

The USSA stopped donations made by Midwest retail giant Meijer, Inc. to the largest anti-hunting group in the nation, the Humane Society of the United States, through an online pet photo contest. After learning of the contest and where the money would go, the USSA sent out a call to action for sportsmen to voice their concern. This resulted in a flood of phone calls, faxes and emails to the retailer and prompted it to discontinue its inadvertent assistance to the anti movement.

Our litigation program, the US Sportsmen’s Legal Defense Fund (US SLDF) successfully protected hunters’ interests in a lawsuit brought by antis’ to make black bears in Florida off-limits to sportsmen forever.

In Minnesota and Maine, the US SLDF, fought antis’ suits that attempted to use the Endangered Species Act (ESA) as a weapon to ban trapping and threaten all outdoor sports.

The USSA’s U.S. Sporting Dog Defense Coalition (U.S. SDDC) won a major victory in Pennsylvania that stopped the antis’ campaign to regulate sporting dog breeders into oblivion,

The USSA stopped two bills in Ohio that represented threats to sporting dog breeders with an intense lobbying and grassroots effort. One bill was another “puppy mill” bill that would have forced a one-size-fits -all regulatory scheme on sporting dog breeders. The other bill would have dramatically increased costs to sporting dog breeders by mandating that only veterinarians could administer rabies vaccinations.

The USSA worked closely with the California Outdoor Heritage Alliance (COHA) and the Masters of Foxhounds to defeat a California measure that would have required the spay or neuter of dogs and cats, including hunting dogs.

The USSA continued leading the nation’s sportsmen to oppose a ban on hunting of hunting healthy, sustainable polar bear populations in Canada.

The US SLDF received a favorable decision from an Arizona federal court judge concerning a case brought against the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) by environmental groups claiming that FWS had violated the law by providing wildlife watering devices in Arizona’s Kofa National Wildlife Refuge.

Another milestone was set for the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation’s (USSAF) signature education effort, the Trailblazer Adventure Program. A new attendance record was set as over 175,000 young people and their families participated in the award-winning program throughout America. Almost 700,000 young people and their family members have been served by the program since 2001.

About:
The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA) and the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance Foundation (USSAF) work nationwide, representing over 1.5 million sportsmen through member clubs and individual constituents. The organizations provide legislative, legal defense and public education services to defend and advance sportsmen’s rights in Washington, D.C. and in all 50 states.

Mossy Oak Nativ Nurseries

West Point, MS - -(AmmoLand.com)- Just as Toxey Haas’ passion for hunting spawned the creation of Mossy Oak Brand Camo, his passion for resources and the management thereof has sprouted another branch of the Mossy Oak Enterprise, Mossy Oak Nativ Nurseries.

For years one of Toxey’s favorite hobbies has been collecting special seed and hand growing many plants and trees in his backyard. It became his obsession to discover rare species and naturally occurring hybrid varieties never before offered to the public.

As Mossy Oak grew, a larger source was needed for plants and trees; one that carried the many wildlife varieties that you couldn’t find readily available. Not only was a source for these “naturally beneficial” plants and trees needed, but a source was needed that would provide genetically advanced varieties from superior parent trees - varieties that had preferred characteristics like taste, vigorous growth, health and early abundant mast production - characteristics that wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts prefer.

Mossy Oak Nativ Nurseries is dedicated to providing the most naturally beneficial plants to landowners and land managers. Whether its White Oaks or Crabapples for whitetails, American Beautyberry for songbirds, native flowers for butterflies or hummingbirds, landscaping the cabin, or our incredible collection of rare oak hybrids, it’s all about taking care of things for the future and benefiting nature. Toxey Haas, Founder of Mossy Oak stated ” Not only has the team here at Mossy Oak Nativ Nurseries identified and hand cultivated the very best genetically superior species available today, we have opened the door to never before offered naturally occurring hybrids, most of which are vastly superior to the traditional species. It is with great excitement that we offer many of these rare and genetically exceptional plants through Mossy Oak Nativ Nurseries.”

We are picky!

MISSOULA, Mont.— -(AmmoLand.com)- Over 100 million fans of Professional Bull Riders (PBR) have something new to cheer about in 2009—the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Trophy Bull Challenge. The challenge pits riders against stock contractors for elk hunts and other outdoor adventures.

The special competition is part of PBR’s Built Ford Tough Series events being held around the country and televised on VERSUS.

“This is the latest and greatest in our ‘Cowboys for Conservation’ partnership with PBR, which over the past year has produced tremendous visibility for our mission of wildlife habitat stewardship,” said David Allen, president and CEO of the Elk Foundation.

In the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Trophy Bull Challenge, PBR selects three bulls for each long round of competition. If a selected bull bucks off the rider, the stock contractor wins a point. If the rider successfully rides the bull, the rider wins a point. At the 2009 PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals, the three riders or stock contractors with the most Trophy Bull points wins an outdoor adventure of their choice presented by RMEF.

Randy Bernard, PBR CEO, said, “Over 50 percent of our fans have expressed a love for the outdoors. The Trophy Bull Challenge is a great, fun way to help them get acquainted with the Elk Foundation and how it makes a difference for elk and other wildlife.”

Celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2009, RMEF has helped conserve or enhance over 5.4 million acres of habitat.

In 2008, the “Cowboys for Conservation” partnership generated over $145,000 for the Elk Foundation’s mission. For 2009, RMEF is again offering PBR Built Ford Tough Series World Finals packages at fundraising events around the country. Winning bidders receive tickets and other prizes including a VIP reception with PBR stars.

“More and more Elk Foundation supporters are being exposed to PBR—the Toughest Sport on Earth—and they’re loving it! Both outfits are benefiting from the partnership, which was founded on the concept of ‘different kinds of bulls, same kinds of people,’” said Allen.

About the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation:
Snowy peaks, dark timber basins and grassy meadows. RMEF is leading an elk country initiative that has conserved or enhanced habitat on over 5.4 million acres—a land area equivalent to a swath three miles wide and stretching along the entire Continental Divide from Canada to Mexico. RMEF also works to open, secure and improve public access for hunting, fishing and other recreation.
About the PBR
More than 100 million viewers tune in each year to the PBR on FOX, NBC, ESPN, VERSUS, and on a host of foreign networks across the globe. With approximately 500 hours of prime time programming annually, PBR ranks among the most prolific sports on air, in addition to attracting over 1.7 million live event attendees each year with it multi-tiered event structure which includes the prestigious Built Ford Tough Series, the Copenhagen Bull Riding Challenger Tour, the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Tour, and the Discovery Tour, designed specifically for entry level contestants. The PBR is headquartered in Pueblo, Colo., with additional offices in Australia, Brazil, Canada, and Mexico. The PBR prides itself in its 1,000 plus stock contractor relationships and over 1,200 PBR bull riders competing in more than 300 PBR sanctioned competitions in five countries.

PHOENIX — -(AmmoLand.com)- Shooting clubs, sportsmen’s groups and government agencies involved in the development, improvement or maintenance of public shooting ranges, including archery ranges, have until 5 p.m. (MST) on Jan. 15 to submit their applications for grant funds from the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Grants are available through a competitive application process each year. The Arizona Game and Fish Commission determines how much money is available, but generally the total is about $100,000. The maximum grant award is $50,000 per project. Privately owned and for-profit ranges are not eligible for this program.

Overland Park, KS - -(AmmoLand.com)- The HD™ Torch from Bushnell shines a new light on flashlight technology. While conventional flashlight produce circular patterns of light that are uneven and irregular, the new HD Torch projects a perfectly square and uniform beam of light. The benefit is that the light beam is consistent from center to edge without dim areas or doughnuts of light.

Without the shadows that are typical with traditional flashlights, the HD Torch makes objects stand out from their background for better definition and clarity.

Minimum Age Lowered For Hunter Education Independent Study

HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania - Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe today announced that the agency is lowering the minimum age required for its “independent study” Hunter-Trapper Education Class to 11 years of age.

When first initiated in 2006, the Game Commission joined a nationwide trend among conservation agencies to provide quality hunter education on-line, but limited participating in the course to first-time hunters at least 17-years-of-age. On Sept. 1, the agency lowered the minimum age to 14.

“The concept of obtaining a license for first-time hunters by foregoing the traditional two-day or three-day course recognizes the time constraints of today’s world,” said Carl G. Roe, Game Commission executive director. “Distance learning meets the need of today’s changing world by accommodating busy lifestyles, and many young people are already demonstrating that they are able to learn course materials online.

“While hunting is recognized as an opportunity for families to spend quality time together, the actual process of obtaining a first-time hunting license is often the main impediment to people wanting to start out. Distance learning allows students to conveniently study at their own speed with a minimum amount of classroom time.”

Registration is available on-line at the Game Commission’s website (www.pgc.state.pa.us) by clicking on the “Hunter Education Classes” icon in the center of the homepage. After reading the instructions on how to register, click on the “Go to Calendar” button at the top of the page, and then scroll down and select an “Independent Study” class meeting your scheduling needs.

Once registered, the student is given the option of studying course material online or requesting a copy of a printed manual. Then, on a given date and time, students who completed the home-study portion of the course will spend time with a District Wildlife Conservation Officer to learn about the Game and Wildlife Code, hunting ethics and landowner relations. Students then take the certification test.

“Most students spend about eight to 10 hours completing the home-study portion of the course,” said Keith Snyder, Hunter-Trapper Education Division chief. “Independent study is an established concept used by many universities and other institutions of higher learning. The Game Commission believes our distance learning program provides a needed convenience to busy students.”

$20,000 Grant to Benefit Grouse and Songbird Populations

Ruffed Grouse Society

Coraopolis, Pennsylvania - The Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) is the recipient of $20,000 in funds to continue the River Hills Forest Habitat Project in Central Missouri. This important wildlife habitat management program has benefited ruffed grouse and other wildlife species that require young forest habitat.

A grant of $12,000 has been approved by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDOC) under the Missouri Bird Conservation Initiative with the remaining $8,000 being provided through the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Private Lands Program. Matching funds and in-kind services are being provided by the Ruffed Grouse Society, Audubon Missouri and others to this project.

According to Mike Zagata, RGS Executive Director and CEO, “RGS is pleased to be able to continue to work with a variety of partners to support the River Hills Project. The dedicated efforts of our Mid-Missouri RGS chapter members has been a key to the projects success.”

A trend towards reduced forest harvesting and a loss of natural fire has created a deficit of young forest habitat in the area, critically important to ruffed grouse as well as many other wildlife species.

Since 2003, the River Hills Forest Habitat Project has promoted the regeneration of oak/hickory forest habitat in three east-central Missouri counties, Callaway, Montgomery and Warren.

The River Hills Project Area has been identified as an Important Bird Area by Audubon Missouri and as a Conservation Opportunity Area in the Missouri Wildlife Action Plan.

A key to the success of this project has been the coordination of management efforts on both public and private lands in the River Hills Area. Management has been intensified on six Conservation and Wildlife Management Areas by the MDOC. Private Lands Conservationists and Resource Foresters from the MDOC have also worked closely with private landowners in the area to simultaneously conduct habitat improvements. MDOC Private Lands Conservationist Jamie Barton reports, “As a result of this cooperative effort, over 2,500 acres of habitat has been enhanced in the River Hills Project Area to date. This work is having a positive effect on many bird species in the area.”

About:
Established in 1961, the Ruffed Grouse Society is the one international wildlife conservation organization dedicated to promoting conditions suitable for ruffed grouse, American woodcock and related wildlife to sustain our sport hunting tradition and outdoor heritage.
