title="AmmoLand Supports Pyramid Air" href="http://www.pyramydair.com/site/pyramyd-air-celebrates-women-in-shooting.shtml" target="_blank">Celebrating Women in Shooting week November 6-12.

The shooting sports are growing, and more women are participating. Manufacturers have started to pay attention to the needs of female shooters and are producing guns that weigh less and have slightly shorter pulls.

Plus, they’re introducing lots of colorful accessories (and guns) that they believe are appealing to women.

Annie Oakley
Probably the most famous female shooter is Annie Oakley. Born Phoebe Anne Moses, she had to shoot because she needed to put food on the table after her father’s death. By the time she was a teen, she’d entered and won so many shooting contests that she was banned from entering many of them, again, because everyone assumed she’d win and no one else would pay the entry fee to compete!

Annie Oakley is the most famous female shooter.

When she was in her teens, she entered a shooting contest against professional sharpshooter Frank Butler. She beat him soundly. He took the defeat in stride…and eventually married her and became her business manager. When Buffalo Bill’s Wild West traveling show hired her, she became an international sensation and was one of the most famous women of her day. Chief Sitting Bull, who was part of the show, nicknamed her “Little Sure Shot.” She would be known by that moniker forever.

These days, many of our famous female shooters are Olympic athletes, including two-time Gold Medalist Kim Rhode, a double-trap shooter. The Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is where our Olympic hopefuls train. Most of today’s Olympic shooting competitions are with airguns. Air rifle shooting requires the use of special clothing that helps stabilize the shooter in the offhand position and increases accuracy. Air pistol shooters don’t wear special clothing. This type of shooting is done at 10 meters at paper targets, is the largest segment of airgun shooting and is enjoyed by well over a million shooters in the U.S.

There are several other airgun disciplines to investigate. Field target is a sport that was started in England and is enjoying a growth spurt in the U.S. because men, women and children can competitively participate. It involves shooting at a steel silhouette target that has a hole in it, called the “kill zone,” that you must hit to get a point. It’s shot from a sitting, kneeling, crouching or standing position, depending on the location of the target. The targets are set at varying ranges, usually from 10 to 55 yards. Generally speaking, field target is shot with Field Target Air Rifles, but there are some clubs that offer air pistol competitions, too.

Benchrest Shooting
Benchrest is another air rifle sport. It originally started as a sport for firearms. It involves shooting an air rifle at paper targets at set distances. The forearms of the guns are rested, but the shooter holds the rear of the gun. A certain number of shots must be fired within a set period of time. All shots are at one set distance.

Airgun silhouette is another discipline that started with firearms. It involves shooting solid silhouette targets of chickens, pigs, turkeys and rams that are set at different distances. There are separate competitions for pistols and rifles, and there are classes of competition within rifle and pistol so you compete against people who’ve spent about as much as you spent for your gun. This is an unusual aspect of classification but a welcome one. It prevents a shooter from using a very expensive gun to outshoot another person with a modestly priced gun. It really levels the playing field!

While there are a number of pink guns that manufacturers have aimed at female shooters, the selection for women is actually much larger. Colors are important for some women, but ergonomics make the shooting experience much more pleasurable. Choosing a lighter-weight gun and one with a slightly shorter pull (or an adjustable stock or buttpad) will go a long way toward making shooting more enjoyable for women who don’t want to wrangle 9-lb. guns that are 4 ft. long!

One last thought: Many shooting instructors have found that women are better shots than men. The reason seems to be that women have fewer preconceptions about shooting and are more open to instruction. And, many women have greater concentration than men of the same age. I guess you could say that women tend to be natural shooters!

Benchrest levels the playing field, and women compete side-by-side with men. Neither one has an advantage over the other!

About:
Civilian Marksmanship Program

CAMP PERRY, OHIO – -(AmmoLand.com)- This year the CMP has implemented several changes to the Sanctioned Match/Clinic program. The first change is the addition of a $5.00 shipping and handling fee.

If you are requesting scorecards, certificates and/or catalogs, you will be required to pay the $5.00 shipping and handling fee. If you are not requesting match materials, the shipping and handling fee will be waived.

The ammunition allocation process has also changed. The application form will no longer list the ammunition price or configuration. If you request ammunition for your event, an ammunition allocation form listing the price and quantity you are approved for will be sent to the event contact person six to eight weeks prior to the date of the match. If you apply for multiple events throughout the year, an ammunition allocation form will be sent six to eight week prior to the date of each event. The ammunition allocation form will be sent via email (hard copies will be sent to those not providing an email address). Once you receive the ammunition allocation form, please complete it and submit it to Mike Conrad, mconrad@odcmp.com, at the CMP North Store. If the ammunition allocation form is not received 30 days after the date of match, then the form is invalid.

Gold, silver and bronze CMP Achievement Pins may be purchased by sanctioned match sponsors to award to competitors in Garand, Springfield, Vintage Military, M1 Carbine and Rimfire Sporter Matches.

The Sanctioned Match/Clinic application form should be submitted six to eight weeks prior to the date of the event. This will allow ample time for the ammunition allocation form to be sent and processed. It is also helpful if the Sanctioned Match/Clinic application is submitted prior to the National Matches (July – August) if the event takes place in July or August as that is our busiest time of the year. Also, if you plan to purchase your allocated ammunition during the National Matches at Camp Perry, it is required you make prior arrangements with Mike Conrad at the CMP North Store.

We hope these changes will help the Sanctioned Match/Clinic Program and the ammunition allocation process. If you have any questions or would like a copy of the new application form, please visit http://www.odcmp.com/Competitions/Sanction.htm or contact me at croguski@odcmp.com or 419-635-2141 ext. 1114. I look forward to working with you in 2010.

Additional information is available at www.odcmp.com or by calling (419) 635-2141.
Tags: <a

In accordance with new camp guidelines put in place by the CMP Board of Directors, all full-length three-position air rifle camps will be held at CMP Competition Centers in Anniston, Alabama, and Port Clinton, Ohio. This means that all campers will have the opportunity to shoot on state-of-the-art electronic ranges. Each CMP Competition Center features 80 electronic firing points that display shooters’ scores instantly on computer monitors. This system also allows CMP to post live scores on the internet, so anyone with access to the CMP website can track live feeds from competitions held at CMP venues.

Also for planning purposes, coaches and parents should note that all camps will now be commuter only, so participants attending camp from out of town will have to make their own housing plans. To assist with this process, links for housing options have been provided on the individual camp information pages on the Main Camp Information page.

Since all regular camps will be held at CMP facilities that are located in the Eastern United States, outreach clinics are being designed to deliver mini-camp experiences in the Western part of the country. This is an expansion of the CMP Clinic program that has been in place for several years. Three of these clinics will be held in the summer of 2010, utilizing the summer camp staff as instructors

The 2010 camp schedule will continue to include an advanced camp in the program. The CMP/AMU Advanced Smallbore Camp will take place at Fort Benning, which is home to the Army Marksmanship Unit. Like the CMP Competition Centers, the AMU ranges at Fort Benning, Georgia, are fully electronic

These are the primary changes for the 2010 camp season, but one thing that will remain the same is CMP’s commitment to the quality of instruction provided at the camps. We continue to recruit the top collegiate athletes for our counselor staff, and have Olympic and National Team members on-hand to share their expertise with the campers. We will also continue to fine-tune our instructional material so that participants receive the training they need to reach their shooting goals

Remember to register early and we will see you at camp! Additional information on all the programs listed above can be found on the Main Camp Information page at http://www.odcmp.com/Programs/camp.htm.

Additional information is available at www.odcmp.com or by calling (419) 635-2141.
Tags: <a

USAMU shooter, Brandon Green, finished a close second, scoring 197-3x. Carl Bernosky, for which the match was named after, came in third place at 196-4x. Those out-scoring Carl Bernosky took home cash prizes totaling of over $1000.

More pictures of the event as well as challenge results are available at www.creedmoorsports.com.

Information on the NMAR is also available through Creedmoor Sports.

The new NATIONAL MATCH AIR RIFLE discipline was developed by the CMP to simulate highpower rifle across-the-course shooting and provide adults with an air rifle discipline that builds on the popular junior three-position air rifle program. This NMAR discipline gives highpower competitors off-season shooting opportunities and it gives other shooters additional recreational target shooting opportunities. One of three NMAR equipment classes is for air rifles configured like M16/AR-type rifles. The Creedmoor-Anschütz NMAR rifle is one of these rifles. NMAR targets are scaled down highpower SR and MR targets. Courses of fire are closely related to current highpower courses.

Thirty-five (35) Creedmoor NMAR rifles were available for anyone for use during this competition.

Crosman

ROCHESTER, New York –-(AmmoLand.com)- Crosman Corporation, long known for innovation and quality in the shooting sports, announced today that its Challenger PCP competition air rifle has been approved for use as a Sporter Class air rifle by the National Three Position Air Rifle Council.

Director of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), Gary Anderson, said that “Council approval of the Crosman Challenger PCP as a legal Sporter Class air rifle means that the Council has determined that it fulfills all basic rulebook standards for price, caliber, velocity, weight, configuration, dimensions, sights and adjustment capabilities.”

According to Crosman Director of Engineering, Ed Schultz, much consideration was given to improving quality and adding leading edge features to the Challenger PCP.

“We kept the adjustable stock and ambidextrous bolt handle, but completely redesigned the rest of the air rifle with all the elements competitors are looking for. They include a two-stage match grade adjustable trigger, the use of high pressure air, providing for more consistent velocity, and a Lothar Walther™ barrel,” he said. “People competing at this level want a gun with features to improve the fit of the gun, while still adhering to the stringent rules of the sport. We’ve not only created a gun that offers better ergonomics for all shooters, but is more affordable than any of its competitors. Adds Schultz, “Some popular features of the Challenger PCP are the dual fuel capability which requires less pumping to achieve 2000 psi, and the patent pending bolt mechanism that allows for ambidextrous use of the gun.”

Crosman will introduce the completely new Challenger PCP at retail and through its Easy Program, a special youth organization marketing program, in August, 2009. The gun will be offered both with sights as the CH2009S, and without sights as the CH2009. Crosman also offers a full complement of filling devices including both pumps and adaptors for pressurizing the gun.

For additional information on Crosman’s Challenger PCP, or on any Crosman, Benjamin, CenterPoint Precision Optics, Crosman Archery, or Game Face Airsoft products, visit the company’s Web sites at www.crosman.com, www.centerpointoptics.com, www.gamefaceairsoft.com, or write to Laura Evans, Marketing Coordinator, Crosman Corporation, 7629 Routes 5 & 20, East Bloomfield, NY 14443, email her at levans@crosman.com, or call her at (800) 7 – AIRGUN (724-7486).

About:<br
