title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Mobile, Alabama Mayor Sam Jones has some explaining to do in the wake of a highly-publicized incident before Christmas during which he held a burglary suspect at gunpoint, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

Jones, a Democrat, is a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, an organization that has campaigned for stricter gun control laws that affect average private citizens.

But Jones is no average private citizen.

Mobile, Alabama Mayor Sam Jones ~ Is he licensed to carry?

According to published reports, Jones was returning home from an errand, driving his private vehicle. “His bodyguard, who drives the mayor’s city vehicle, was not on duty,” the Press-Register newspaper reported. And now there are questions about whether the mayor has an Alabama carry permit.

“Here is a municipal mayor who has a bodyguard, and believes it is okay for him to carry a gun, but he belongs to an organization that consistently works to keep everyone else from carrying,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “If the mayor is legally licensed, why does he belong to a group that has fought to prevent law-abiding citizens from exercising their self-defense right?

“If Mayor Jones doesn’t have a permit,” he continued, “then he is a poster child for the double standards that elites like Mayor Michael Bloomberg believe separates them from the citizens they serve. Either way, Mayor Jones owes it to his constituents to show them his carry permit, and to oppose any further attempts by Mayors Against Illegal Guns to prevent private citizens from exercising their constitutionally-protected right to keep and bear arms.

“It is no surprise that average American citizens are fed up with government officials at all levels,” Gottlieb observed. “We’re glad that Mayor Jones had the means and the willingness to protect his property, but we are stunned and disappointed that he belongs to an organization whose very essence is to make it virtually impossible for average citizens to do likewise.”

With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of the nation’s premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities throughout the United States. The Citizens Committee can be reached by phone at (425) 454-4911, on the Internet at www.ccrkba.org or by email to InformationRequest@ccrkba.org.
Tags: Ammoland.com)- A pair of ringed-neck ducks painted by Jim Denney of Alexander City, Ala., is the winner of the 2011 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest. The winning artwork will adorn the 2012-2013 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp.

The annual contest, sponsored by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF), is open to all resident Alabama artists only.

Denney previously won the 2007 contest with a painting of hooded mergansers. Contest rules prevented him from entering again until this year. Denney is flattered to have his artwork selected as the winner for the second time in as many entries. “It’s a big honor. There are some really good artists in this state,” he said.

This year’s first runner-up is a pair of white-fronted geese painted by Steven Burney of Town Creek, Ala. A Canada goose painted by Bill Stem of Madison, Ala., was selected as second runner-up, while a cinnamon teal painted by Neil Pope of Union Grove, Ala., was third runner-up. Fourth runner-up was by Everett Hatcher, who painted a blue-winged teal.

Entries were judged on suitability for reproduction as a stamp, originality, artistic composition, anatomical accuracy and general rendering. The designs were limited to living species of North American migratory ducks or geese, and winning species from the past three years – wood duck, northern pintail drake and American wigeon – were not eligible subjects for the 2011 contest.

The artwork was publicly displayed and judged by a panel of experts in the fields of art, ornithology, and conservation. Representing the field of art was Jonathan Matthews, a Montgomery artist who has studied in Norway and France. Representing the field of ornithology was Dagmar Thurmond, a wildlife biologist with the U.S. Forest Service. Representing the field of conservation was Frank Boyd, a wildlife biologist and state director of the USDA Wildlife Services office in Auburn.

The funds from stamp sales are used to procure and manage wetland habitats for waterfowl. All licensed waterfowl hunters are required to purchase state and federal migratory waterfowl stamps or to purchase the privilege. Like the federal stamps, state issued stamps are popular with collectors. The artwork competition for the Alabama Migratory Waterfowl Stamp design is held each year in February and is open to Alabama residents only.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. DU has spent more than $1.7 million on conservation in Alabama, improving many public areas including projects on the Sipsey River, Demopolis Wildlife Management Area and Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge.

“I don’t think many duck hunters realize that if they are hunting on a public hunting area in Alabama, chances are good they are hunting on a Ducks Unlimited project,” Battison said.

Through a grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, DU and the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources continue to improve waterfowl habitat in Alabama with a project to enhance wetlands on the David K. Nelson Wildlife Management Area near Demopolis in Greene County.

“This project will improve 70 acres of wetland habitat, complementing the ongoing work by the DCNR in adjacent counties,” Tim Willis, DU regional biologist, said. “Collectively, these projects bring us closer to our goals of providing quality wetland habitat, cleaner water in Alabama’s watersheds and enhanced outdoor opportunities for the people in the region.”

Attend one of these upcoming events and support wetlands conservation in your area:

Eutaw Ducks Unlimited Dinner October 1st, 2010 Contact Colin McRae 205-792-9808

Tuscaloosa Ducks Unlimited Dinner October 7th, 2010 Contact Westley Jones 205-361-4749

Marion Ducks Unlimited Dinner October 28th, 2010 Contact Robert Hoggle 334-683-4004

Greensboro Ducks Unlimited Dinner November 16th, 2010 Contact William Holmes 334-624-4001

Demopolis Ducks Unlimited Dinner November 18th, 2010 Contact Brandon Smith 334-534-1764

About:<br

The bill is similar to previous efforts in other states that were promoted by the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance (USSA). The USSA has also developed and supported “no-net loss” legislative language at the national level including two current bills pending in Congress collectively known as the Hunting Heritage Protection Act.

HB 330 cleared both the House and Senate unanimously and the Governor’s office has indicated that he plans to sign the bill early next week.

“No net loss bills like House Bill 330 are very important in a time where access to hunting land is increasingly becoming difficult for sportsmen,” said Rob Sexton USSA vice president for government affairs. “We appreciate the efforts of all Alabama sportsmen who made this bill possible.”
Tags: Quail Forever

Morgan, Ala. –-(AmmoLand.com)- Bobwhite quail enthusiasts in Alabama have formed the nation’s newest Quail Forever chapter. Named North Alabama Quail Forever, more than 20 hunters and conservationists created the Morgan County-based group to become an active force in reestablishing quail habitat in the region.

As a Quail Forever chapter, the North Alabama group will utilize Quail Forever’s local approach to wildlife habitat conservation. Unlike other national conservation organizations, Quail Forever gives local Quail Forever chapters the ability to decide how 100 percent of their fundraised dollars are spent. This local control gives chapters and members the ability to make things happen for wildlife in their communities, while belonging to a national organization that gives wildlife and conservation a voice in Washington, D.C.

Already, the chapter has taken the initiative of contacting local wildlife management authorities to inquire about assisting with quail habitat projects. The Bankhead National Forest has 11,000 acres slated for quail restoration work as part of its Quail Initiative Program, and the Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge has 1,200 acres in a quail habitat restoration program.

“With adequate support from our chapter, state programs and local wildlife officials, we can set the foundation needed to reestablish quail in Alabama,” said Kevin Terry, president of North Alabama Quail Forever.

Although the North Alabama Quail Forever chapter is primarily focused on establishing quail populations, the habitat projects stand to benefit many other species of wildlife. Those who are interested in the environment are encouraged to join the chapter.

“We have an ‘all inclusive’ focus in terms of our members,” said Terry. “Several of our members do not hunt, but know and understand that improved habitat is advantageous for many species. Our chapter is common ground to join together conservationists from all walks of life.”

As it sustains quail habitat, North Alabama Quail Forever looks to sustain quail conservationists. “Regardless of the progress, it is only sustainable with future Quail Forever members. We have several active youth members and plan to engage them in our chapter projects; this is an integral part of our mission.”

North Alabama Quail Forever

Chapter leaders are Kelly Meeks, treasurer, from Decatur; and Jeff Selby, habitat chair, also from Decatur.

Chapter planning benefit clays shoot for disabled vets and physically challenged youth, as well as first annual fundraising banquet – both to be held this spring.

The chapter’s next meeting will be Tuesday, March 2, more info TBA.

For more information about North Alabama Quail Forever, upcoming events and to become a member, contact Kevin Terry at 256-303-2229 and kevin_terry@bellsouth.net.

Quail Forever is the quail division of Pheasants Forever. Alabama is home to six Quail Forever chapters. For more information on Quail Forever in the state, contact Elsa Gallagher, Quail Forever regional wildlife biologist, at 660-277-DOGS and egallagher@quailforever.org.

For additional information please visit www.QuailForever.org
Tags: Outdoor Alabama

Dothan, Ala - -(AmmoLand.com)- Alabama’s third community archery park officially opened on Friday, December 4 in Dothan, Ala.

The Dothan facility joins archery parks in Athens, and Cullman, Ala., that opened in February 2008 and April 2009, respectively. A fourth park will open in Demopolis in 2010.

The range was developed through a partnership between the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF), the City of Dothan, the Archery Trade Association (ATA), and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Students from Rehobeth High School’s agriscience program contributed to the project by building the target frames and were present for the ribbon cutting ceremony.

WFF Director Corky Pugh said the opening of the range is a monumental occasion for both the State of Alabama and the City of Dothan. “What we are creating is an opportunity for young people to learn life skills that will stay with them throughout their life,” Pugh said. “Archery is one of those great sports that you don’t have to be an athlete to excel in.”

Mike Piccirilli, Division of Federal Assistance Chief for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service in the Southeast, praised the progress Alabama has made with the opening of its third archery range. “Alabama is a special place because it is so dedicated to archery,” Piccirilli said. “We hope this park will stimulate interest and participation in archery for years to come.”

In a continued partnership with Dothan Leisure Services, WFF will assist in the creation of school and recreational archery programs for Dothan and surrounding communities in Houston County. “We are looking forward to enhancing our programming by providing archery related activities for students and citizens of Dothan and Houston County,” said Elston Jones, Dothan Leisure Services Director.

Alabama’s archery parks are user funded at no cost to taxpayers. The parks are also made possible through the Community Archery Program (CAP), which was developed in 2005 by the ATA to grow archery and bowhunting participation nationwide.

The Dothan archery park features: eight youth targets from 5-20 yards; 11 adult range targets from 15-80 yards; and an elevated platform that simulates bowhunting situations with targets from 10-40 yards.

The Dothan archery range is open to the public during daylight hours except for Wednesday, when it is closed to the public. All participants, ages 16 to 64 must have a Hunting or Wildlife Heritage license in order to shoot. All shooters must sign in and out at the Eastgate Lodge. No broadhead points are allowed and users of the elevated platform must wear a full body harness. The park is located in Eastgate Park, 2049 Sanitary Dairy Road, Dothan, Ala., 36305.

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. class="wp-caption-text">Outdoor Alabama

Alabama --(AmmoLand.com Firearms News)-Alabama artists can celebrate the New Year by entering the 2009 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp art contest, which opens January 1, 2010.

According to Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Director M. N. Pugh, the winning artwork will be used as the design of the 2011-2012 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp.

The competition is open to resident Alabama artists only. Entries will be accepted from January 1 until the February 16 contest deadline.

Display of all entries, to which the public will be invited, will be held February 26, 2009, at the Richard Beard Building in Montgomery.

Following the showing, three judges from the fields of art, ornithology and wildlife conservation will select the winning waterfowl art.

Contest coordinator David C. Hayden, Assistant Chief of the Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries’ Wildlife Section, advises artists that entries must not exceed 9 by 12 inches (15 by 18 inches matted).

Only original horizontal artworks depicting a species of North American migratory duck or goose will be eligible. The Hooded Merganser, Wood Duck and Pintail—depicted in the winning artwork of three previous year’s contests—are not eligible as the subject for the 2011-2012 Waterfowl Stamp.

Hayden says judging criteria will emphasize uncluttered design suitable for printing as a stamp, anatomical accuracy of the illustrated species, and artistic rendering. Close attention must be given to tone and detail, since those aspects are prerequisites for printing artwork as a stamp. Wing and feather construction must be particularly well defined. Entrants may submit a painting or drawing; past contest entries have included works in oil, watercolor, acrylic and mixed media, all of which are eligible.

For contest information and entry forms, contact David Hayden, Alabama Wildlife and Fisheries Division, 64 North Union Street, Room 584, Montgomery, Alabama 36130 (334/242-3469).
Tags: National Archery in the Schools Program

Ashville, Alabama - -(ShootingWire.com)- The Ashville (Alabama) Middle School Archery Team recently brought home top honors in the National Archery in the Schools (NASP) Championship held in Louisville, Kentucky. The students scored 3,350 out of a possible 3,600 points and placed first out of 65 middle school teams. Ashville qualified for the national championship when they won the middle school state title in Birmingham earlier this year.

While Alabama schools have done well in past national championships, Ashville Middle School is the first team to win this prestigious event. Coach Jeremy Cox is excited and proud of their efforts. Nathan Owens and Stephanie Whisenant of Ashville Middle School each finished second in their respective division as individuals.

This is also the first year that an individual from Alabama finished in first place within their respective age division. Katie Rappuhn, a fifth grader from Breitling Elementary in Grand Bay, Alabama shot a 283 out of a possible 300 points to take first place among all female elementary participants. Her team from Breitling placed 17th out of 56 elementary school teams competing.

A total of 12 schools representing Alabama competed at the championship. More than 4,500 students from 35 states and one Canadian province were represented at this year’s national tournament. Scoring for the championship is based on Olympic style, target archery in three divisions – elementary, middle and high school. Competition included team and individual levels. NASP archery is a co-gender sport with every team required to contain boys and girls.

The NASP was founded in Kentucky in 2002 and has since spread around the country. The program was introduced in Alabama in 2003, and approximately 153 Alabama schools participate in the NASP program. In Alabama, the NASP is a joint venture between the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division and the Alabama Department of Education.

The program promotes participation in the lifelong sport of archery as part of a school’s physical education course and after-school programs. The NASP program can also be included as a unit or activity in the Lifelong Individualized Fitness Education (LIFE) course as part of the Alabama Course of Study. The program meets the criteria of one credit for physical education required for high school graduation.

State Superintendent Dr. Joe Morton praised the students for their success. “I congratulate these dedicated students for bringing home Alabama’s first National Archery in the Schools Championship and for their commitment and hard work,” he said. “Archery in the Schools offers students a sport and competition away from the traditional sports arena. Students also benefit from learning a sport that can be carried into adulthood for a lifetime physical activity. The Alabama Department of Education is proud to be a partner in this program that gives students an experience that makes them feel better about themselves, about physical education, and about school.”

“Congratulations to the winners of the archery competition,” said Dr. Jack Hataway, Chronic Disease director with the Alabama Department of Public Health. “For those who participate in it, archery contributes positively to mental and physical health. Archery requires the use of many muscles as well as mental concentration to focus on targets. It represents a good way to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.”

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. class="wp-caption-text">Archery Trade Association

SALT LAKE CITY - -(OutdoorWire.com)- The Community Archery Program (CAP) in Cullman, Alabama has received $52,000 from the Archery Trade Association (ATA) to fund a local archery park, provide equipment and increase school involvement in the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP).

The $285,000 project is a collaborative effort between the City of Cullman, the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (ADWFF) and the ATA. The Cullman Community Archery Park is the second of six Alabama archery facilities now completed or under way as part of CAP. The first such state-of-the-art archery park opened in 2008 in Athens, about 50 miles from Cullman. Meanwhile, the ADWFF is building archery parks in Dothan and Demopolis, and will soon break ground in Heflin. The state is also negotiating for an archery park in Huntsville.

We’re not slowing down,” said Stuart Goldsby, Alabama’s regional hunter education coordinator for the ADWFF. “We might not be building the biggest facilities in the country, but we’re working with our communities to build grassroots archery parks that involve everyone from schools to rec departments to bowhunting clubs. If it weren’t for the support of the ATA and the archery industry, none of this would be possible. The people of Alabama value this partnership.”

The ATA’s CAP, launched by Alabama’s state wildlife agency, has been embraced by other state and local government leaders across the country. CAP promotes NASP as a key introduction to archery, works to make the sport available in local community recreation programs and funds the shooting facilities all archers need to participate in shooting year round. In 2007 and 2008 alone, the ATA provided more than $400,000 to develop CAP in Alabama, Alaska, Iowa, Michigan, New Jersey and Tennessee.

As work on the Cullman Archery Park progressed in 2008, Cullman-area bowhunters formed the Heritage Archery Club, a local chapter of the Bowhunters of Alabama, the state’s largest, most active archery association. Within a week, the club became the state’s third largest chapter, no doubt evidence of what a local archery park can do to grassroots participation.

The archery park also will help the ADWFF create school and recreational archery programs in the city of Cullman and surrounding Cullman County. Of the total project amount, $55,000 funded NASP in the Cullman area. Earlier ATA donations to Alabama included $15,000 to help the ADWFF launch the state’s NASP. In all, the ATA has provided the ADWFF more than $100,000 in grants and equipment to grow archery and expand bowhunting opportunities in the state. In 2008, 147 Alabama schools participated in NASP and, as a result of CAP in Athens, Ala., 15 new schools were added to NASP.

“Alabama has been aggressive in promoting and developing the CAP model, and building on the success and popularity of the NASP,” said Michelle Doerr, the ATA’s director of archery and bowhunting programs. “They’re on track to build two to three archery parks a year for the next few years for everything from school to after-school shooting programs to 3-D tournaments. They’re doing a great job of working with the entire community to get people involved and excited about archery.”

The Cullman archery park features 36 targets, including an eight-target beginner’s range from 5 to 20 yards; an eight-target general target range of 15 to 50 yards; a four-target bowhunting range of 10 to 40 yards with a 12-foot platform; and a 16-target walking course with shots out to 70 yards.

Since 2004, the ATA has provided funding totaling approximately $884,000- including grants provided through CAP – to initiate NASP in the United States, Canada and Australia. It has also contributed nearly $960,000 in CAP grants, equipment and direct aid to state wildlife agencies to grow archery and expand bowhunting opportunities.

For more information about the ATA’s efforts to grow archery and bowhunting, please contact Michelle Doerr at michelledoerr@archerytrade.org or call (320) 562-2680.

About CAP:
The Community Archery Program (CAP), developed in 2005, was designed by the ATA as a four-pronged approach to grow archery and bowhunting participation. CAP promotes NASP as a key introduction to archery, works to make the sport available through the After School Archery Program (ASAP) in local community recreation programs and funds the development of shooting facilities all archers need to participate in shooting year round. The fourth leg of the initiative is a supporting role provided by local archery shops, clubs and organizations. The ATA provides funds, expertise, equipment and targets to support state wildlife agencies to lead the CAP initiative and for local communities to develop and manage archery parks and school and after school programs.

About the ATA:
Since 1953, ATA has been the trade association for manufacturers, retailers, distributors, sales representatives and others working in the archery and bowhunting industry. ATA is dedicated to making the archery and bowhunting industry profitable by decreasing business overhead, reducing taxes and government regulation and by increasing participation in archery and bowhunting. ATA owns and manages the ATA Trade Show, the archery and bowhunting industry’s longest running and largest trade show worldwide.
Tags: Outdoor Alabama

Alabama - -(AmmoLand.com)- A northern pintail drake painted in acrylic by Clarence Stewart of Brewton, Alabama, is the winner of the 2009 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest. The winning artwork will adorn the 2010-2011 Alabama Waterfowl Stamp. Mr. Stewart, a repeat participant in the contest, faced competition from 15 other artists.

The annual contest, sponsored by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (WFF) Division, is open to resident Alabama artists only. Mr. Stewart also won the 2005 contest with a painting of a canvasback duck.

“Representing my home state on its waterfowl stamp is the highest honor I can ask for as an artist,” Mr. Stewart said. “I feel very fortunate to win based on how great the other artists are.”

First runner-up was a pair of buffleheads by Beverly Basham of Vinemont . Second runner-up was of a pair of redheads by Steve Burney of Town Creek. Third runner-up was by Ainsley McNeely of Mobile, who also painted a pair of redheads. Fourth runner-up was a pair of northern shovelers painted by Everett Hatcher of Birmingham.

Entries were judged on suitability for reproduction as a stamp, originality, artistic composition, anatomical accuracy and general rendering. The designs were limited to living species of North American migratory ducks or geese, and winning species from the past three years – blue-winged teal, hooded merganser and wood duck – were not eligible subjects for the 2009 contest.

The artwork was publicly displayed and judged by a panel of experts in the fields of art, ornithology, and conservation. Representing the field of art was Donnave Lindsey, a Society of Arts and Crafts member since 1940. Representing the field of ornithology was Dr. Allen Tubbs, associate professor of Biology at Huntington College. Representing the field of conservation was Ducks Unlimited regional director for Alabama, Shawn Battison.

“Mr. Stewart did an excellent job capturing the details of this very elegant duck,” Dr. Tubbs said. “The northern pintail is the Audrey Hepburn of the duck world.”

Judges Judie Hooks, Dr. Barry Grand and Quincey Banks surround contest winner John Denney who is holding his winning entry.

The funds from stamp sales are used to procure and manage wetland habitats for waterfowl. All licensed waterfowl hunters are required to be in possession of state and federal migratory waterfowl stamps signed in ink across the face. Like the federal stamps, state issued stamps are popular with collectors. The artwork competition for the Alabama Migratory Waterfowl Stamp design is held each year in February and is open to Alabama residents only.

About:
Ducks Unlimited

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The President’s Top 100 are among Ducks Unlimited’s elite chapters throughout the nation. Every year, the list is reserved for the 100 chapters who raise the most grassroots dollars for DU’s habitat conservation work. The Birmingham, Alabama, DU Chapter made the list as one of the organization’s highest fundraising chapters.

“DU volunteers have historically gone above and beyond and these chapters exemplify our grassroots system,” said Bruce Lewis, president, Ducks Unlimited. “Volunteers within these chapters are this organization’s foundation and their passion for conservation is what fuels their hard work.”

The Birmingham Chapter has earned a spot on the President’s Top 100 list out of the more than 3,500 DU Chapters nationwide. DU’s grassroots system has become a model for other conservation organizations worldwide and has funded a portion of the more than 12 million acres DU has conserved since 1937.

“These chapters are showing that the future of waterfowl populations and wetlands that filter our drinking water are important to them and their communities,” Lewis said. “The more money we raise, the more habitat we can conserve and the closer we are to preserving our waterfowl hunting heritage. I would like to personally thank all our top 100 chapters for their achievement and look forward to seeing them among our elite chapters next year.”

About:
Ducks Unlimited is a unique organization because it relies on the generosity and passion of its volunteers to accomplish its goals. Striving for success, the top 100 chapter volunteers, like all DU volunteers never fail to answer the call.

With more than a million supporters, Ducks Unlimited is the world’s largest and most effective wetland and waterfowl conservation organization with more than 12 million acres conserved. The United States alone has lost more than half of its original wetlands – nature’s most productive ecosystem – and continues to lose more than 80,000 wetland acres each year.
Tags: <a
