Southeastern Oklahoma --(AmmoLand.com)- Oklahoma based LOKI Weapon Systems, a subsidiary of THOR Global Defense Group, recently donated the first of ten custom built TR-15 rifles to the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) in Ada, Oklahoma. LOKI manufactures the THOR TR-15, an AR-15 rifle – and produces a variety of parts and accessories based on THOR designs. This donation (10 rifles) has a retail value over $15,000 but the real value is in the training opportunities it provides for Oklahoma’s peace officers.

When Larry Knesek, President & CEO of THOR Global Defense Group was asked why they made this donation he said, “The individuals who train here are the same men and women who are putting their lives on the line every day to ensure a safer society for all of us, it is truly an honor for us to provide them with the support and equipment they need.”

CLEET is the state agency, which is responsible for training the majority of Oklahoma’s peace officers. This donation will expand CLEET’s armory, which did not include any AR-15 tactical rifles until now. The TR-15’s will allow CLEET to offer an Advanced Rifle course to Oklahoma’s peace officers. CLEET Director, Dr. Larry Birney noted that “By expanding the armory at CLEET to include AR-15 rifles, we will be able to provide Oklahoma’s peace officers with advanced rifle training that was previously unavailable. By expanding our training opportunities, CLEET is preparing officers for all types of situations, thus increasing the level of safety statewide.”

The TR-15 rifle is used frequently by law enforcement agencies nationwide, and as part of this donation THOR has agreed to allow communities with graduates from the CLEET Advanced Rifle course to purchase this firearm at a significantly reduced cost.

Senator Susan Paddack was one of those in attendance for the donation.

She stated, “This donation comes at a time when all state agencies are experiencing budget cuts and scaling back operations. Oklahoma is fortunate to have businesses that recognize the needs of state agencies and take steps to help them better serve our citizens.”

All those in attendance were not only impressed by the generosity of THOR/LOKI but by the superior quality of the firearms.

LOKI Weapon Systems is part of the growing firearms industry in Southeastern Oklahoma. For the past seven years, members from various organizations in southeastern Oklahoma have made the annual trek to the SHOT Show, the world largest shooting, hunting, and outdoor trade show, to attract new businesses to the area. “We must work harder to help protect the right of hunters and sports shooters to own the firearms of their choice, including semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns, for lawful purposes. Gun owners everywhere can help correct the misinformed, whether it’s a friend, fellow hunter, elected official or the media.

NSSF is assisting this nationwide campaign by issuing the Modern Sporting Rifle Fact Card as a resource.”

Here are the facts:

• AR-15-platform rifles are among the most popular firearms being sold. They are today’s modern sporting rifle.

• The AR in “AR-15″ rifle stands for Armalite rifle, after the company that developed it in the 1950s. “AR” does NOT stand for “assault rifle” or “automatic rifle.”
• AR-15-style rifles are NOT “assault weapons” or “assault rifles.” An assault rifle is fully automatic — a machine gun. Automatic firearms have been severely restricted from civilian ownership since 1934.
• If someone calls an AR-15-style rifle an “assault weapon,” he or she either supports banning these firearms or does not understand their function and sporting use, or both. Please correct them. “Assault weapon” is a political term created by California anti-gun legislators to ban some semi-automatic rifles there in the 1980s.
• AR-15-style rifles look like military rifles, such as the M-16, but function like other semi-automatic civilian sporting firearms, firing only one round with each pull of the trigger.
• Versions of modern sporting rifles are legal to own in all 50 states, provided the purchaser passes the mandatory FBI background check required for all retail firearm purchasers.
• Since the 19th century, civilian sporting rifles have evolved from their military predecessors. The modern sporting rifle simply follows that tradition.
• These rifles’ accuracy, reliability, ruggedness and versatility serve target shooters and hunters well. They are true all-weather firearms.
• Chamberings include .22, .223 (5.56 x 45mm), 6.8 SPC, .308, .450 Bushmaster and about a dozen others. Upper receivers for pistol calibers such as 9 mm, .40, and .45 are available. There are even .410 shotgun versions.
• These rifles are used for many different types of hunting, from varmint to big game. And they’re used for target shooting in the national matches.
• AR-15-style rifles are no more powerful than other hunting rifles of the same caliber and in most cases are chambered in calibers less powerful than common big-game hunting cartridges like the 30-06 Springfield and .300 Win. Mag.
• The AR-15 platform is modular. Owners like being able to affix different “uppers” (the barrel and chamber) to the “lower” (the grip, stock).
• And, they are a lot of fun to shoot!

Berryville, AR – -(AmmoLand.com)-The IDPA Nationals is just around the corner and I have yet to find any time to practice. I hope you are going into the fall shooting season better prepared than I am.

Seems like work and lack of ammo has kept me off the range. I plan to turn over a new leaf next year and get far more active in shooting again. After years of shooting every weekend and practicing any other time I could get, it seems difficult to regain that focus I once had in my shooting. I guess it happens to all of us at some point, we need to take some time off from activities to regain our enthusiasm. I can feel mine returning and hopefully spending time with everyone in Tulsa for the Nationals will kindle the fires.

This has been a strange year in the industry. At times .22 ammo was not to be found, and I understand that .380 ammo is still not available in most stores. Here at the office the ammo shortages have delayed test-fire and created all sorts of issues for us to complete the process and ship guns to our customers. I have talked to customers that are shooting ammo that they would never have purchased in the past due to shortages on their dealer shelves. Please remember that like any quality product, it requires a diet of good quality ammo.

Looking over current trends it seems like the 9mm is the current upturn in requests for pistols. I guess due to ammo prices and ease of shooting it is no wonder. The recent addition of the 9mm ETM magazine has helped that a great deal. I still remember the first time I shot a 9mm 1911; it was so much fun you would not believe. I guess others already knew how fun the 1911 could be in 9mm, I was on the back side of the bus. The largest single problem that was had by all was unavailable and poor quality magazines for it. Well the 9mm ETM helped everyone that wanted to give it a try. While the 9mm lends itself to double stack magazines, after spending a great deal of time we got it right. I was amazed how many different approaches were used over the years to get old 1911s in 9mm to work. I guess like it all started, they were modified to work with existing magazines. When we designed the 9mm ETM, it was a targeted goal of ten rounds that would feed in most every 1911 on the market. We even purchased some old pistols, dusted off some others, and put them all to the test. The results as you know are outstanding. If you have always wanted a 9mm 1911 or have one that never worked, give us a call and we can help either way.

The media campaign illustrates how for more than 100 years rifles used by the military that possess battlefield requirements of accuracy, ruggedness and reliability became, understandably, popular civilian sporting rifles.

The multi-pronged campaign will use print, video and Web-based components to reach as wide an audience as possible, with emphasis placed on educating sportsmen whose preference for traditional-looking firearms can lead them to misunderstand AR-15-platform rifles and to even describe them using terms such as “assault weapon,” which inadvertently lends support to those wanting to ban these rifles.

“The best-selling rifles in America today are those based on the AR-15 platform — they are today’s modern sporting rifles — yet they remain America’s most misunderstood firearm because of confusion caused by their cosmetic features,” said Steve Sanetti, NSSF President.

NEWTOWN, Conn. –-(AmmoLand.com)- The National Shooting Sports Foundation has launched a national media campaign designed to correct widespread misperceptions among gun owners and non-gun owners about AR-15-style rifles, also known as modern sporting rifles.

“The best-selling rifles in America today are those based on the AR-15 platform — they are today’s modern sporting rifles — yet they remain America’s most misunderstood firearm because of confusion caused by their cosmetic features,” said Steve Sanetti, president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, trade association for the firearms industry.

Sanetti said the confusion is understandable because a modern sporting rifle looks like a military firearm, like an M-16, for example. “We want people to understand that these civilian sporting rifles function just like many other sporting rifles, as semi-automatics, firing only one round with each pull of the trigger, and are widely used by hunters and target shooters and for home protection. They are not ‘evil’ or ‘bad’ firearms, as some would have you think,” Sanetti emphasized.

The media campaign illustrates how for more than 100 years rifles used by the military that possess battlefield requirements of accuracy, ruggedness and reliability became, understandably, popular civilian sporting rifles. This military-to-civilian evolution can be seen in some of the most famous rifle models of all time, including the 1903 Springfield bolt-action rifle of World War I, the Garand semi-automatic rifle of World War II and the M-16 rifle of the Vietnam era. In the case of the M-16, its civilian version, the AR-15, was modified so that it functioned only as a semi-automatic.

Today’s AR-15-style modern sporting rifles are just another step in the evolution of the tools hunters and target shooters use to enjoy their activities. These rifles may not look like current hunting rifles, but remember, your current hunting rifle probably doesn’t look much like your grandfather’s rifle either.

Sanetti emphasized that these AR-15-platform sporting rifles are not “assault weapons,” as they are frequently and incorrectly labeled by organizations, media and elected officials who would like to ban them. “An assault weapon is fully automatic — a machine gun — while rifles based on the AR-15 platform are semi-automatic,” said Sanetti. “Civilian ownership of fully automatic firearms has been severely restricted since 1934.”

The multi-pronged campaign will use print, video and Web-based components to reach as wide an audience as possible, with emphasis placed on educating sportsmen whose preference for traditional-looking firearms can lead them to misunderstand AR-15-platform rifles and to even describe them using terms such as “assault weapon,” which inadvertently lends support to those wanting to ban these rifles.

The campaign’s educational ads have been placed in major firearm and sporting magazines such as Field & Stream and Outdoor Life and on outdoor cable television networks. The campaign’s materials can also be seen on a dedicated Web site, which expands the educational messages delivered in the media campaign to promote an even better understanding of how civilian sporting rifles have evolved from military rifles over time.

The Web site offers video, a timeline of military-to-civilian rifle evolution plus interactive features that identify the components and functionality of modern sporting rifles. There is also a facts section of the site, where gun owners can arm themselves with facts to correct individuals, media and organizations who are misinformed about these rifles.

“We ask everyone who values their gun ownership rights to correct misunderstandings about the use and operation of these modern sporting rifles,” said Sanetti. “If we let misinformation go unchecked, we only assist those who would ban ownership of these and other types of semi-automatic firearms, like your duck-hunting shotgun. We can’t let that happen.”

This Week: Bob Cuts The Cards With Small Bullets

Brownells.com - -(AmmoLand.com)-We’ve been doing some “reality checks” around here last week, trying to get a handle on how our industry is doing and how we need to prepare for the upcoming year.

As we look back, it would seem that most all of us in the industry have had a fantastic run of business. Our industry has been recognized by shooters, non-shooters and even the economic whiz-kids on Wall Street, as one of the very few bright spots during this economic downturn.

You probably saw it in the huge volume of sales starting right at the election in November, 2008, peaking somewhere around Easter, 2009 and then sliding back closer to the traditional summer slow-down we always see.

In doing our analysis here, we asked ourselves the following three questions and tried to come up with answers. You might want to stop a moment and with a fresh cup of coffee, ask yourself these questions about your business and how you feel about your future.

1. Is this “Obama Gun Sale Bubble” over?
2. Is demand for firearms and ammunition coming down to the standard demand curve for our business?
3. What can we do for the remainder of 2009 and all of 2010 to match or beat those high sales in the “Bubble” months of 2008-09?

We came up with some answers, which I’ll pass along to you, but they really are only our opinions from our viewpoint. Hopefully you will find something in here which will be beneficial to you in your business.

We believe the insane demand level for tactical firearms is over and future demands for these products will come back down to the industry norms. Keep in mind, though, there have been a huge number of non-traditional firearms buyers making purchases of AR-15’s. So there are a lot of customers out there who will still want to accessorize and modify one of the world’s most versatile and popular platforms. Definitely still a market for AR-15 “stuff”, but a much softer one for the basic platform itself.

The conceal carry/home defense market, however, is starting to heat up and right now is the beginning of a “short boom”, not as significant as tactical rifles, but one nonetheless. We don’t know how much leg this market can get under it or how long it might run. It is getting lots of play right now in the gun press, so take a look at how you can get into it modestly and watch it closely.

We strongly believe the reloading and ammo markets are still underserved and have strong growth ahead of them. It will take longer to get these markets back to a norm because the primer shortage. The deep fluctuations/price increases in the metals markets from which most of these ammo components are made – lead, copper, brass has an impact on availability and prices. Our industry’s share of these markets is not even a wrinkle, and we have neither control nor any leverage we can bring into play. We just have to wait for the metals markets to settle out.

Shotgun and hunting markets did not seem to have the favorable run-up as the tactical weapons market. From what we think we see, there might be some returning strength. It looks like reservations for hunts have still to recover. We definitely expect those to slowly come back, but quite possibly not until folks are more comfortable the economy has settled down and a general recovery is underway. Hunts are discretionary, more easily put off.

For net results for 2009, don’t focus too much on beating year-over-year numbers. Our last year was way out of the norm. Instead focus on the year’s sales number. With the history we’ve had, it would actually be acceptable to have a 0% growth year in 2010 – it all depends when your fiscal year ends and where the “Obama Bubble” fell. Sometimes it’s just nice to have survived and to be able to move on!

With over 220 entries, Paul Kerr out-shot all of the competitors to win the Bernosky Challenge event on August 8, 2009, with a 197-8x score. USAMU shooter, Brandon Green, finished a close second, scoring 197-3x. Carl Bernosky, for which the match was named after, came in third place at 196-4x. Those out-scoring Carl Bernosky took home cash prizes totaling of over $1000.

The new NATIONAL MATCH AIR RIFLE discipline was developed by the CMP to simulate highpower rifle across-the-course shooting and provide adults with an air rifle discipline that builds on the popular junior three-position air rifle program. This NMAR discipline gives highpower competitors off-season shooting opportunities and it gives other shooters additional recreational target shooting opportunities. One of three NMAR equipment classes is for air rifles configured like M16/AR-type rifles.The Creedmoor-Anschütz NMAR rifle is one of these rifles. NMAR targets are scaled down highpower SR and MR targets. Courses of fire are closely related to current highpower courses.

Thirty-five (35) Creedmoor NMAR rifles were available for anyone for use during this competition.

The first two matches have already been completed. The President’s Rifle Match, perhaps the most prestig­ious rifle match in America, will be fired today.

The top 100 out of a total of 1,300 competitors will be­come members of the “President’s 100.”

The winner, who will be determined after a pressure-packed final between the top 20 competitors, by tradi­tion receives a letter of congratu­lations from the President of the United States.

Early Presi­dent’s Rifle Match results will be posted by 11:00 AM. By 2:00 PM, you will be able to see complete scores for the first 30 shots. That will tell you who made the Presi­dent’s 100 this year as well as who made the top 20 to advance to the final where the winner is determined.

The most exciting part of the day will start at 3:30 PM when the top 20 shooters fire a 10-shot shoot-off to de­termine who receives the coveted Presidential letter. Fi­nal round scores are added to scores for the first 30 shots to determine the winner.

This summer I have had little time to shoot.  The family and I are preparing to move into a new house and with two kids and all that goes with raising them; it is tough to find enough time to shoot.  In short order I hope that my son Eoin will be ready to start shooting with dad.  We have started the road to where he will be able to take part in my favorite past time.  Eoin has been to matches with me, he was still in the stroller when he attended his first national shooting event.  For the first years of his life that was his summer vacation, so he has been on the range.  I have been taking care to gradually get him into it.  This is an experience all of its own, being a father.  Trying to carefully bring him into my favorite hobbies is tough enough without having to worry about having to explain to the teacher why he talks in adult shooting terms.  The first time I heard him say “stand by” to one of his friends, I smiled.  Most of his teachers have visited with me at least once about him and how he conducts himself.  I say all of this to make a point that shooting used to be America’s past time but appears to be no longer.  How do we get back there from here?  I guess I will perfect my youth shooting program with my son, so my daughter will have the benefits?

This video and web page will show you just how easy it is to install an AR15 free float tube on your AR15 upper.

This whole job, from beginning to end, takes 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on your skill level.  If you can tighten a few nuts, then you can install your own AR15 free float tube to customize your black rifle just the way you like it.

This section will cover installing a YHM brand ultralight carbine float tube ($144.95)

AR 15 Free Float Tube

Ok, lets cover the necessary tools. What you need:

Since this procedure requires removal of the AR15 barrel and barrel nut, you will need many of the same tools as you would when building a complete AR-15 upper.

Gunsmith Tools you will need:

• A good AR15 action block
• AR15 armorers wrench
• 1/16″ punch
• Snap ring pliers
• KG KG-11 Moly Grease 2 oz
• Gun Vise
• AR15 Vise Jaws

In addition, depending on the AR15 free float tube you choose, you might need a special float tube wrench. I opted to get this from YHM, didn’t need it, but since this was my first one, couldn’t hurt.

You will also need a couple punches. You just need a good sized (1/4″) soft brass punch and a steel 1/8″ punch. I got this punch set and really like it…. but you can find what you need at sears or harbor freight, etc…

That’s it for tools!

Now here are the step-by-step instructions:

1. Remove the upper from the rifle. Remove the handguards. Using the instructions listed in the above posts, remove the barrel from the upper receiver. (you don’t have to fully remove the barrel…. just the barrel nut/delta ring assembly, and you could leave the gas tube in the FSB) We will be assuming a full dis-assembly for this guide) You MUST remove any type of muzzle device first…. flash hider, muzzle brake, etc… If these are permanently mounted, then they will have to be removed. Depending on their method of attachment, it may be advisable to have a competent gunsmith remove them and reinstall them.

Now we need to remove the FSB (front sight base) from the barrel. The pins in the FSB are typically tapered. This means they can only be removed one way. (I am told that RRA and LMT use straight pins, not tapered, so those should be even easier) Look on both sides of the FSB and determine which side of the pins is the SMALLER end. It should be the left side, and we will be knocking the pins out from left to right. NOTE – Stag Arms has been shipping uppers with FSB taper pins on the opposite side of most uppers – so be sure to examine your FSB!

2. Support the barrel so that when we knock the pins out, we wont stress the barrel at all… I used a couple pieces of 2×4. Using a large diameter (~1/4″) brass punch, firmly knock the pins loose. Use masking tape all round the FSB is you are worried you might slip and scratch something. I must admit… on most of the barrels I have done, a couple sharp hits with a punch knocked the pins loose…. but I finally had one Bushmaster 20″ barrel that the pins absolutely would not come loose on. I ended up having to dremel the FSB down and then was able to punch them out, but I ruined the FSB. I was replacing with a flip up FSB anyway, so it wasn’t a great concern… but keep this in mind, should you come across one that is not very friendly.
It will take the most force just to break the pins loose… once they are loose, we can use the small punch to tap them all the way out:

3. Now, lubricate the FSB and the area on the barrel in front of the FSB with CLP, WD40, gun oil…etc… this it to ensure we will scratch the barrel as little as possible upon removing the FSB. Wiggle the FSB back and forth to loosen it… you may need to put the barrel back in the upper receiver to hold it for this step. Then, pull the FSB from the barrel, going slow and taking care. If you go slowly, you shouldn’t place any marks on the barrel from this step. Remove the barrel nut and delta ring as well:

4. Disassemble the YHM free float… into the float tube, aluminum barrel nut, and float tube lock nut.

5. Insert the barrel into the upper receiver. Apply a little moly grease to the threads of the upper receiver.

6. Install the barrel nut, and get it snug (this should be tightened just like any other barrel nut, torque it to spec)…. then tighten until you align with the next possible gas tube hole. Slip the gas tube in from the rear to ensure you are aligned:

7. Install the float tube lock nut. Thread it all the way to the rear, flush with the back edge of the barrel nut. I like to use a little blue Locktite on this, to ensure it wont back off in the field. A little Loctite makes all the difference!

8. Spin on the float tube…. right up to the lock nut. Ensure the rail is aligned with the rail on the upper receiver. I used a A3 carry handle, half on the receiver, and half on the float rail, to achieve this. Then tighten the locking nut. You can use the YHM tool for this, or a hammer/punch/flat blade screwdriver.

9. Now install the FSB back on the barrel, and the gas tube. Remember to put the roll pin back in the gas tube if you removed it:

10. Using the large brass punch, tap the taper pins back in, from the RIGHT, to the LEFT, this time… driving them home.

11. DONE! Wasn’t that simple? Finished product… time to go shooting!

There are several different types of free float tubes on the market, and their installation will vary slightly from this specific one… some have integrated barrel nuts, some require a strap wrench, but all have the same principles involved above.  Source: AR15.com
