/> NASP is an in-school archery curriculum that meets all education department standards. Only schools that are certified in NASP through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are qualified to compete in the State Tournament. Schools in nearly 70 counties in Georgia are NASP certified.

The program promotes instruction in international-style target archery to improve educational performance and participation in shooting sports. Research has shown that the program, administered through a minimum two-week course during the school year, improves class attendance and behavior. NASP universal fit bows make it possible for students of all sizes and genders to succeed in archery while raising self-esteem levels and improving hand-eye coordination during physical activity.

NASP is taught in 46 states as well as Australia, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand. To date, more than five million students have participated in the program.

For more information on assisting schools bound for the NASP National Tournament with funding or NASP in Georgia, call Jennifer Pittman at (770) 918-6416 or e-mail jennifer.pittman@gadnr.org.

Brought to you by - AMMO LAND.COM - Firearms & Shooting Sports News West Virginia DNR

West Virginia - -(AmmoLand.com)- The West Virginia Division of Natural Resource’s Wildlife Resources Section (DNR) will host an Archery in the Schools (AIS) Program training Jan 19-20, 2010, at the Gander Mountain Store in South Charleston, according to Jerry Westfall, DNR’s AIS Program Coordinator.

“Gander Mountain has always been committed to getting our youth involved in the outdoors,” said Greg Walls, Store Manager for Gander Mountain. “We’ve seen the success and growth of the DNR’s AIS Program with the number of kids coming into our archery department, and we are happy to be assisting schools in the Kanawha Valley, and elsewhere, by hosting this training.”

The AIS Program is the DNR’s largest and fastest growing educational program. Since its inception in 2004, approximately 40,000 students have been introduced to archery as part of their physical education (PE) classes in 199 West Virginia schools. The program teaches Olympic-style, target archery in both public and private school’s Grade 4-12 PE classes.

“However, in order for schools to have the AIS Program, they must first have a certified instructor – preferably a PE instructor or coach who will introduce as many kids as possible to the joys of target archery,” said Westfall. “The DNR has about four trainings a year; and, because class size is limited to 25, training slots are highly sought after. To ensure a training slot, we encourage PE teachers and coaches to apply as soon as possible, before the Jan. 8 deadline.”

As an added incentive, teachers taking this training may be eligible to receive Continuing Education Hours (CEH’s).

Please note this training will cost $25 for all school employees and $50 for non-school employees. This fee will be paid to WVDNR – Archery in the Schools Program (via check, money order, or exact currency only) during the first morning of the training.

To register for the AIS training at the Gander Mountain Store in South Charleston, please call Billie Shearer at 304-558-2771; e-mail billieshearer@wvdnr.gov.

For general information on the AIS Program, you can visit the DNR’s AIS Web site at www.wvdnr.gov/archery or call DNR’s AIS Program Coordinator Jerry Westfall at 304-558-2771; email jerrywestfall@wvdnr.gov.

Brought to you by - AMMO LAND.COM - Firearms & Shooting Sports News At Muzzy t’s about attitude. Some are hunters and some are gatherers. We are hunters. Hunting is one of man’s most basic instincts. It is at the core of our being. Undeniable. Some learn to gather, but we were born to hunt. The first tools of early man were the spear, not the hoe. It’s about understanding nature, the world as it is, and our place in that world. And it’s about acceptance. Accepting the natural challenge of taking a wild animal on its own turf using intelligence, some sharp tools and little else. We accept it because are are more than hunters, we are bowhunters. Different. A breed apart. An elite cadre of the hunting world with the drive to test our skills in nature’s own arena. It is who we are. And we are bad to the bone.

Brought to you by - AMMO LAND.COM - Firearms & Shooting Sports News Arkansas Game & Fish Commission

ORLANDO, Fla. --(AmmoLand.com)- In less than a year, Eagle Mountain Magnet School’s archery team went from nonexistent to world champion. But doing well in archery competitions is old hat for this rookie team.

The team was formed one month before the Arkansas National Archery in the Schools Program’s state championship in February, where it took second place. The team finished eleventh at the national competition in Louisville, Ky., in May. The world competition, Oct. 9-10 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., was the icing on the cake.

Coach Susan Parker is as new to archery as many of the students she introduced to the sport. She said bows used in the competition are different from standard hunting bows, although some of her students are bowhunters.

The fledgling team practiced weekends, and before and after school. They even practiced through the summer.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission provides instruction and safety training to team coaches and helps them with the grant process to pay for the official bows, targets and arrows. In its first year, the program has grown to include more than 26,180 students in 296 Arkansas schools, and it shows no sign of slowing.

“We have 12 schools waiting in the wings for grant money to get the equipment for next year,” said Curtis Gray, ANASP coordinator for the AGFC. “The program’s growth is just outstanding. And now we already have a world-champion team. I’d like to take credit for the success, but those kids are the ones who deserve the recognition. They really worked hard to achieve this success.”

For more information on ANASP and how to form a team, contact Gray, (501) 223-6437.

Brought to you by - AMMO LAND.COM - Firearms & Shooting Sports News National Archery in the Schools Program

Sparta, WI --(AmmoLand.com)- In 2001, during the 6-month planning phase of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) one of the items on our wish list was to attract “Disney” as a partner. We felt if NASP could attract the interest of Disney that would be a sign of the program’s success.

During the winter of 2008 Kevin Stay at Mathews was contacted by a Disney official, Greg Waldron with a question about his hunting bow. Of course no one can talk to Kevin, our NASP Vice-President for more than a few minutes before they will hear about the program. Greg was impressed with NASP®’s popularity and it’s Mission to help student.

A few months later this encounter resulted in a meeting at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports.

During our first planning meeting we agreed to design a NASP range at Disney’s Wilderness Resort, train Disney cast members to present NASP-style archery lessons, and develop a 100 minute archery lesson for resort guests. We also began discussions about establishing a NASP® tournament at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports® complex.

A bit more than a year later we announced, at the 2009 NASP® National tournament in Louisville, Kentucky, that Disney and NASP would join forces to conduct NASP®’s first world tournament. This was only 5 months notice for schools that might like to participate and only weeks remained in most states’ school year to make plans, raise travel money, and keep teams practicing over the summer. NASP® also had to develop an on-line registration system to allow teams to register, select flight times, and pay registration fees. Registration for the tournament opened two days after Labor Day in September and closed on September 23. NASP® offered partial travel grants to teams in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada to help them make the trip.

The first NASP® World Tournament was conducted indoors at the new Josten’s Center on October 9th and 10th at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports® complex. A total of 609 archery students from 18 states and Saskatchewan participated in the 2-day event. The most heavily represented grade levels at the tournament were grades 5th and 6th. There were even 3, 3rd grade students competing, with special written permission from their Principals to “shoot up”. Proving once again that NASP® is an important co-gender activity, 44% of the participants were female.

Many of the student archers, coaches, teachers, and parents reported having a terrific time at this first NASP® World Tournament. Carly Hedden, an 8th grade participant said, “It was an honor to be invited to compete with top Archers around the world. She said that participating in such a hi-profile event and visiting Disney were “…dreams come true for me.” Carly’s mother, Susan commented that, “NASP® Archery teaches discipline and sportsmanship in a positive environment which are principles that I want my child to learn and live by.”

Disney was a terrific host of the event helping to set-up and tear down, providing a facility coordinator, first aid, and ushers throughout the tournament. Of course the first aid station was the least active place in the building because of archery’s terrific safety record! Nearly all the young archers were among the 4,565 students that participated in the 2009 NASP® National Tournament held in May, 2009. Several of the students and their parents including Kevin, Cindy, and Cody Able from Lawrenceburg, KY were very impressed with the quality of the Disney facilities and the “niceness” of the Disney cast members. It was obvious this tournament-inspired trip to Disney World® was a huge hit with many of the students, many of which had never been out-of-state, on an airplane, visited Disney before, and for those who drove over to Daytona Beach, had never seen the ocean. Teacher, Eric Sowers at the Providence School in Nicholasville, KY reported, “Our kids loved the shooting facility and the professionalism. The tournament site had them in awe. You should have seen their faces when they saw the Atlantic Ocean for the first time. They truly had a once in a lifetime experience.” Nathan Parcell of Brandenburg, Kentucky enjoyed meeting archers from around the country he has become acquainted with and to make new archer friends.

As is NASP®’s norm awards were presented to the top three teams in the elementary, middle, and high school divisions. Again, as is NASP®’s standard, every archer used the same bow (without sights, stabilizers, or release aids), the same arrow, and shot 15 arrows at both 10 and 15 meters. Individual awards were presented to 1st-5th placing boys AND girls in 4, 5, and 6th grades and the middle school and high school divisions. The overall boy and girl champions posted identical scores of 293 (out of 300). The young lady World Champion was Kentucky’s Danielle Reddick from Trigg county High School. Two young men achieved identical scores of 293. However, Alabama’s Joshua Clarke was beat out by Michigan’s Steven Schram for overall top male archer in the World, based upon a higher number of “bulls-eyes”. Six young archers were involved in a fast-paced, tie-breaking “shoot-off” immediately preceding the awards ceremony. The 1st placing teams in each division and individual winners are listed below.
<p

Additionally, thanks to the generosity of several NASP® supporters, some winners received bows from Mathews Archery, arrows and repair kits from Easton Technical Products, targets from Morrell Manufacturing, and bow cases from the Genesis Outlet. One of the most hotly contested awards at NASP® tournaments are the “Spirit Awards” presented to one school in each of the three divisions. This award, a resin Bald Eagle, is presented to teams judged by a committee of volunteers for showing terrific enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and school spirit. Teams that win these awards usually dress in special archery “uniforms”, sing, change, and carry their school’s banner. It is always fun to see how the kids “spirit-up” whenever an official-looking NASP® person walks by their team carrying a clipboard! One of most spirited teams wore the new NASP® uniform shirt made by EOTAC. The elementary division was won by Indiana’s Hayden Elementary, their 2nd year to take home the eagle. Kentucky’s Anderson County Middle and Meade County High Schools were spirited, great sports, and colorful enough to also win Spirit Awards.

Nearly forty states and provinces will conduct annual tournaments among their NASP® schools this coming January-April in 2010. While vying for terrific prizes and notoriety among their peers, they also will be competing to see who will be among nearly 6,000 students at the NASP® national tournament scheduled for May 7th & 8th in Louisville, Kentucky. See you there!

Complete results and pictures of this first NASP® World Tournament can be found at NASP®’s web site: www.archeryintheschools.org

By: Roy Grimes
West Virginia DNR

BECKLEY, W.Va. –-(AmmoLand.com)- The next instructor training for the popular Archery in the Schools Program (AIS) will be held Dec. 8 and 9 at JBC Archery Center in Shady Spring (near Beckley), according to Jerry Westfall, AIS Program Coordinator for the Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR).

“It has been quite some time since we held a training session in the Beckley area,” said Westfall. “And thanks to the cooperation of the JBC Archery Center and owner Chuck Frye, we can once again provide AIS training to area physical education teachers and coaches, as well as others from around the state. We are very excited about the potential expansion of the AIS program by involving schools not yet participating. Based on the interest we have received so far, and the number of local schools, this training should be quite successful.”

The AIS Program is the DNR’s largest and fastest growing educational program. Since its inception in 2004, more than 35,000 students have been introduced to archery as part of their physical education (PE) classes in 199 West Virginia schools. The program teaches Olympic-style target archery in both public and private school’s grade four-12 PE classes.

“But in order for schools to have the AIS Program, they must first have a certified instructor – preferably a PE instructor or coach who will introduce as many kids as possible to the joys of target archery,” said Westfall. “The DNR has about four trainings a year; and, because class size is limited to 25, training slots are highly sought after. To ensure a training slot, we encourage PE teachers and coaches to apply as soon as possible.” The deadline to sign up for the training is Nov. 25. As an added incentive, teachers taking this training may be eligible to receive Continuing Education Hours (CEHs).

This training will cost $25 for all school employees and $50 for non-school employees. This fee will be paid to WVDNR – Archery in the Schools Program via check, money order, or exact currency during the first morning of the training.

To register for the AIS training at JBC Archery in Shady Spring, please call Billie Shearer at 304-558-2771; e-mail billieshearer@wvdnr.gov. For general information on the AIS Program, you can visit the DNR’s AIS Web site at www.wvdnr.gov/archery or call DNR’s AIS Program Coordinator Jerry Westfall at 304-558-2771; e-mail jerrywestfall@wvdnr.gov.

Brought to you by - AMMO LAND.COM - Firearms & Shooting Sports News <a

The program teaches Olympic-style, target archery in both public and private school’s Grade 4-12 PE classes. As an added incentive, teachers taking this training may be eligible to receive Continuing Education Hours (CEH’s).”

Please note this training will cost $25 for all school employees and $50 for non-school employees. This fee will be paid to WVDNR – Archery in the Schools Program (via check, money order, or exact currency only) during the first morning of the training. The deadline for signing up for the training is July 31.

To register for the AIS training at Kenna Elementary, please call Billie Shearer at 304-558-2771; e-mail billieshearer@wvdnr.gov. class="wp-caption-text">National Archery in the Schools Program

Ashville, Alabama - -(ShootingWire.com)- The Ashville (Alabama) Middle School Archery Team recently brought home top honors in the National Archery in the Schools (NASP) Championship held in Louisville, Kentucky. The students scored 3,350 out of a possible 3,600 points and placed first out of 65 middle school teams. Ashville qualified for the national championship when they won the middle school state title in Birmingham earlier this year.

While Alabama schools have done well in past national championships, Ashville Middle School is the first team to win this prestigious event. Coach Jeremy Cox is excited and proud of their efforts. Nathan Owens and Stephanie Whisenant of Ashville Middle School each finished second in their respective division as individuals.

This is also the first year that an individual from Alabama finished in first place within their respective age division. Katie Rappuhn, a fifth grader from Breitling Elementary in Grand Bay, Alabama shot a 283 out of a possible 300 points to take first place among all female elementary participants. Her team from Breitling placed 17th out of 56 elementary school teams competing.

A total of 12 schools representing Alabama competed at the championship. More than 4,500 students from 35 states and one Canadian province were represented at this year’s national tournament. Scoring for the championship is based on Olympic style, target archery in three divisions – elementary, middle and high school. Competition included team and individual levels. NASP archery is a co-gender sport with every team required to contain boys and girls.

The NASP was founded in Kentucky in 2002 and has since spread around the country. The program was introduced in Alabama in 2003, and approximately 153 Alabama schools participate in the NASP program. In Alabama, the NASP is a joint venture between the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division and the Alabama Department of Education.

The program promotes participation in the lifelong sport of archery as part of a school’s physical education course and after-school programs. The NASP program can also be included as a unit or activity in the Lifelong Individualized Fitness Education (LIFE) course as part of the Alabama Course of Study. The program meets the criteria of one credit for physical education required for high school graduation.

State Superintendent Dr. Joe Morton praised the students for their success. “I congratulate these dedicated students for bringing home Alabama’s first National Archery in the Schools Championship and for their commitment and hard work,” he said. “Archery in the Schools offers students a sport and competition away from the traditional sports arena. Students also benefit from learning a sport that can be carried into adulthood for a lifetime physical activity. The Alabama Department of Education is proud to be a partner in this program that gives students an experience that makes them feel better about themselves, about physical education, and about school.”

“Congratulations to the winners of the archery competition,” said Dr. Jack Hataway, Chronic Disease director with the Alabama Department of Public Health. “For those who participate in it, archery contributes positively to mental and physical health. Archery requires the use of many muscles as well as mental concentration to focus on targets. It represents a good way to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.”

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. class="wp-caption-text">National Archery in the Schools Program

COLUMBUS, OH - -(AmmoLand.com)- Nineteen Ohio teams of 430 student archers competed at the 2009 National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) National Championship, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Wildlife. The competition was held in Louisville, Kentucky on May 8 and 9; it drew more than 4,500 students from 35 states and Canadian provinces.

Meigs Intermediate School in southeastern Ohio finished second in the elementary school division. Last year, the school’s archers won first place in that division. Also finishing in the top 20 for the elementary school competitors was Maysville Elementary of Zanesville in fifth place, and Logan Hocking Elementary of Logan in twelfth place. A total of 56 teams competed in this division.

Four Ohio teams finished in the top 20 for the middle school division: Maysville Middle School, fourth; Meigs Middle School, 13th; Philo Junior High, 16th; and Logan Hocking Middle School, 17th. Sixty-five teams competed for the middle school title.

Among the 84 teams competing to take the high school national title, two Ohio teams finished in the top 20: Maysville High School finished fourth and Meigs High School took ninth place.

Adrian “AJ” Sprankle of Maysville High School in Zanesville became the second Ohioan to take an individual title at the national competition. Sprankle finished first in the High School Male Division with a score of 296 of a possible 300. Jacob Riffle of Meigs High School in Pomeroy finished third, scoring 296, and Eugene Patterson, also of Meigs High School finished fourth, scoring 295. The top three archers initially were tied at 296. Adrian was declared the winner as he shot more “10s” than those with whom he tied. Second and third place were determined by a tie breaking shoot-off. Adrian and Jacob also shot their way to a share of college scholarship money, earning $2,500 and $2,000 respectively for their marksmanship.

Kelsey Taylor of Morgan High School in McConnelsville would certainly have taken first prize for persistence. Suffering a broken leg and ankle since qualifying by winning the Ohio high school female title, Kelsey was determined to compete at Nationals. She made it to Louisville and finished fifth in the High School Female Division.

The National Archery in the Schools Program brings target archery to the school gym. The curriculum covers archery, safety, equipment, technique, concentration skills, and self-improvement. Kentucky originated NASP in 2002. Ohio has participated in the program since 2004. class="wp-caption-text">National Archery in the Schools Program

Louisville, Kentucky - -(AmmoLand.com)- The National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) is a joint venture between school districts, schools and state Fish and Wildlife agencies. Several archery equipment manufacturers and organizations are also partners. In New Jersey, NASP is coordinated by the NJ DEP’s Division of Fish and Wildlife.

The program’s focus is to provide International style target archery training in physical education classes for grades 4-12. NASP promotes student education, physical education and provides instruction for students as a gateway to participation in the lifelong sport of archery.

Oxford Central School physical Education teacher, Rob Causton, was trained as a level one archery instructor in 2006 as part of a pilot program for the NASP in New Jersey. Later that school year he introduced this new physical education program to his middle school students and found that it was an immediate success. Since that time, Rob and Oxford Central have held the NJ State Archery NASP Champion title each of the last three years. Along with the state title is the opportunity to attend the national championship in Kentucky. This year approximately 5,000 kids competed at the event making it the largest indoor archery competition in the world! Oxford preformed like a well-oiled machine and posted a team score that only 8 other schools were able to beat.

No previous archery experience is required for a physical education teacher to become a certified NASP archery coach. The training is provided free of charge and equipment kits can either be purchased or participating schools can take advantage of a new loaner program that provides all the required equipment for the two-week period the course is being conducted.

School administrators and physical education teachers interested in obtaining more information or training can contact the state NASP coordinator, Paul Ritter at 908-637-4125 or e-mail <a

Some arrows landed more centered than others, but each young participant, will forever remember the day they made NASP history.

NASP is an in-school target archery program started in 21 Kentucky schools on March 3, 2002. NASP’s aim is to teach target archery skills to students in grades 4-12 as part of the inschool curriculum. Rapidly expanding NASP archery is currently presented in more than 5,000 schools in 46 states and five countries by nearly 16,000 teachers.

Archery is ranked safer than every ball sport taught in schools except table tennis. Every student at the tournament shot 10 practice and 30 scoring shots using identical equipment at the same target from 10 and 15 meters.

The highest possible individual score is 300 and the highest possible team score is 3,600. NASP archery is a co-gender discipline with every team required to contain boys and girls. At this tournament 38% of the participants were female.

In fact, Jessica Nystrom from Hartland High School in Hartland, Michigan, tied NASP legend, Graham Cofield’s world record with a score of 298. The first placing high school team with 3,435 points was perennial power, Henderson County High from Henderson, Kentucky. Separated by only 4 points, the 2nd and 3rd placing high schools were Trigg and Meade County High from Cadiz and Brandenburg, Kentucky. With 3,350 points Ashville Middle School from Ashville, Alabama won their division. A single point separated Henderson County (KY) and Stuart Pepper Middle School from Brandenburg for 2nd and 3rd positions.

The elementary team division finish order was Trigg County Intermediate, Meigs Intermediate in Middleport, OH and Westonka Elementary, from Minnetrista, Minnesota. Rumor has it the Minnesota archers took a day off from updating the state’s inventory of 10,000 lakes to attend the tournament!

There were ten first place boys and girls in the various divisions. Meredith Noland from Chickasha, Oklahoma and Blake Taylor from Lewisburg, Kentucky were tops among fourthgraders. Katie Rappuhn from Grand Bay, Alabama and Jeremy Elliott from Corbin, Kentucky took 1st among fifth graders. First place honors for sixth grade were earned by Kayla Dowell from Payneville Elementary (KY) and Kolt Perkins from Zaneis School in Wilson, Oklahoma.

The top middle school girl was Trigg County’s Patsy banister. Her counterpart in the middle school male category, 8th grader Taylor Knott, was the top overall male shooter for the entire tournament with a 297 from Stuart Pepper Middle School in Brandenburg, Kentucky.

First place prizes for high school female champion were awarded to the new world record holder, Jessica Nystrom from Hartland High in Hartland, Michigan. Jessica’s arrow just missed the target’s center twice all day. She was accompanied on the podium by the high school champion male, Adrian Sprankle from Maysville High in Zanesville, Ohio. With most of the event’s 5,000 spectators watching, the top four scoring male and top four scoring female archers participated in a Scholarship Shoot-Off. Thanks to a large number of donors, NASP was again able to award a total of $14,000 in college scholarships to these eight shoot-off contestants.

The top scholarships of $2,500 went to Zanesville, Ohio’s Adrian Sprankle for the boys and lady archer Brandi Waters of Brandenburg, Kentucky. The final and possibly most anticipated awards of the tournament were presented last. Winning the Spirit Award for enthusiasm and sportsmanship were Meigs HS from Pomeroy, OH and Hartland Elementary and Middle Schools from Hartland, Michigan.

To be conducted in a timely, safe, and efficient manner, this tournament was served by an army of volunteers. More than 150 volunteers came from the ranks of Centershot Ministries, KY Department of Fish & Wildlife Resources, United Bowhunters of KY, Mathews Archery Professionals, KY Traditional Bowhunters Association, Northern KY Bowhunters Association, and visiting state NASP Coordinators. The 2009 NASP Nationals were joined by archers from 35 states from Alaska to New Jersey.

For the first time in NASP’s history, Canada’s anthem was presented, as archery teams from Saskatchewan joined the fray this year. The team from Melfort, Saskatchewan raised $30,000 in three weeks to make the trip to Louisville. NASP is a non-profit foundation able to operate only by support from a variety of generous donors. Many of these donors were present at the nationals including medal-level sponsors; Mathews Archery, the National Wild Turkey Federation, Morrell Targets, The Block, and Rinehart Targets. The National Field Archery Association’s MJ Rogers was again on hand to loan and help set up the NFAA’s huge portable indoor archery range. A complete list of tournament award winners in every division and a list of scholarship sponsors can be found at: www.archeryintheschools.org

The 2010 NASP Nationals will be held again at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky on Friday, May 7th and 8th. All students who qualified to attend the 2009 Nationals are invited to attend the 1st annual NASP World Tournament in Orlando, Florida on October 7-1lth, this year!

About:
National Archery in the Schools Program

Wheeling, W.Va. - -(AmmoLand.com)- An Archery in the Schools (AIS) training session for instructors will be hosted by the Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR) July 21-22, 2009, at the Cabela’s store near Wheeling, W.Va., according to Jerry Westfall, DNR’s AIS Program Coordinator.

“Cabela’s has always expressed an interest in assisting the DNR with getting more schools involved in the AIS Program, especially those in the northern panhandle,” said Westfall. “The support we’ve received from Cabela’s has been tremendous and I can’t think of a better place to host this training. Incidentally, instructors may also find Cabela’s a fascinating place to shop for gift ideas after the training – considering it is one of the largest sporting goods stores in the state.”

The AIS Program is DNR’s largest and fastest growing educational program. Since its inception in 2004, more than 35,000 students have been introduced to archery as part of their physical education (PE) classes in 183 West Virginia schools. The program teaches Olympic-style, target archery in both public and private schools Grade 4-12 physical education classes.

“However, in order for schools to have the AIS Program, they must first have a certified instructor – preferably a PE instructor or coach who will introduce as many kids as possible to the joys of target archery,” said Westfall. “DNR has about four trainings a year; and, because class size is limited to 25, training slots are highly sought after. As an added incentive, teachers taking this training may be eligible to receive Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) – provided they submit their paperwork to their principal before the end of the school year.”

“Cabela’s is looking forward to hosting this training and being part of this nationally recognized program,” said Matt Leary, Cabela’s department manager. “Cabela’s West Virginia store was the first in the nation to host a similar training, and we are excited to continue to be a part of this quickly growing program. A lot of credit also needs to be given to local officials and the DNR for bringing this training back to our store. However, it’s about the kids; and, I’m excited to get youth involved in an activity they can enjoy for a lifetime.”

Please note this training will cost $25 for all school employees and $50 for non-school employees. This fee will be paid to WVDNR – Archery in the Schools Program (via check, money order, or exact currency only) during the first morning of the training.

To register for the AIS training at Cabela’s, please call Billie Shearer at (304) 558-2771 or e-mail billieshearer@wvdnr.gov. For more information on the AIS Program, you can visit DNR’s AIS Web site at www.wvdnr.gov/archery or call DNR’s AIS Program Coordinator Jerry Westfall at (304) 558-2771; e-mail jerrywestfall@wvdnr.gov.

Brought to you by - AMMO LAND.COM - Firearms & Shooting Sports News National Archery in the Schools Program

Missoula, Montana - -(AmmoLand.com)- Jeff Bretherton of Missoula, Montana has recently been named as the seventh board member for the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). Jeff specializes in ranch real estate transfer, high net worth financial planning, development, and fundraising and has served in this capacity for several years.

Jeff graduated from Saint John’s University (MN) in 1993 with a B.A. in Government. Jeff began his career as a financial planner with Northwestern Mutual Life in Minnesota. From 1996 to 2003 Jeff served as the Saint John’s University Senior Development and Planned Giving Director. In this role, Jeff was responsible for the development of major marketing plans for gift planning, managed over 150 deferred gift prospects, and led the solicitation of 5 of the largest leadership gifts in Saint John’s history which totaled more than $20 million.

From 2003-2005 Jeff created the Minnesota Real Estate Foundation where he was able to develop one of the first nonprofit organizations that worked exclusively with charitable gifts of real estate. From 2005-2007 Jeff was the Vice President of Development and Gift Planning for the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) where he was integral in raising millions of dollars for RMEF, developing marketing strategies, directing a Capital Campaign in order to construct a new Visitor Center and Headquarters, as well as overseeing a 60% increase in development revenue from 2004-2007. As a result of this revenue increase the RMEF was awarded the prestigious 4 Star rating from Charity Navigator for 2007.

While at the RMEF, Jeff was also responsible for the Conservation Buyer Program that linked great properties with conservation minded buyers. Jeff was invited to join one of the most successful Merrill Lynch teams in Montana in late 2007. The team was responsible for managing over $200 million for both individual and institutional clients.

Currently, Jeff is the owner of the Iten Company; a boutique ranch brokerage firm that represents a portfolio of very exclusive ranch properties throughout the Rocky Mountain region. At the current time the company has in excess of $200 million in ranch listings.

“Having an opportunity to watch the tremendous growth of NASP and seeing firsthand the impact the program is having on the kids that are participating, led me to make a very easy decision when asked to join the Board. NASP is the model that conservation, hunting and education groups will look toward in the future for leadership in providing youth the opportunity to create a lifelong activity for themselves while improving educational outcomes for all involved.”

Jeff’s background and experience in financial planning, development, and charitable giving makes him a tremendous resource to the NASP as it seeks to secure the resources necessary to insure programmatic and financial future of NASP. In addition, Jeff’s commitment to philanthropy, conservation and students, as demonstrated by his current role on the Board of the Montana Community Foundation, former role with RMEF and as a former board member for the Boys and Girls Club, fits well with the mission of NASP and makes him an ideal member of NASP’s leadership team.

Jeff resides in Missoula, MT with his wife Julie; their two children Annie and John and a lively chocolate lab named Daisy.

About:
National Archery in the Schools Program

LINCOLN, Nebraska - -(OutdoorWire.com)- The 2009 Nebraska National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament looks to attract more than 400 young archers to the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln on Saturday, March 28.

“The Nebraska tournament is an amazing culminating state event for archers who have taken part in NASP within their schools,” says Aaron Hershberger, a Nebraska Game and Parks Commission outdoors education specialist. “The 2009 event looks to be the biggest and best yet.”

This is the fourth year for the Nebraska state tournament, and some major changes have been made to help more archers and schools participate. “The tournament has been scheduled for March to better avoid other sporting events, it’s been moved indoors to better re-create the environment where these archers normally shoot, and this year we’ve added more activities in which the archers can participate,” said Hershberger. “This is a family event and organizers hope that families will come to support not only their archers and participate in the activities.”

In addition to the standard NASP competition shoot, archers can take part in a Pop-Up 3D range hosted by the Lincoln Prairie Bowmen, they can challenge fellow archers to a duel at the Saunders Archery SACO Shoot-Out, and attend an exhibition shoot by Nebraska’s very own archery sharpshooter, Erika Anschutz.

“Our goal is to make the Nebraska State Tournament a family event and not solely a competition,” said Wes Sheets, Nebraska NASP coordinator. NASP instructors have an added incentive as well, thanks to several local bow-shop professionals. The national NASP board phased out the old brass nock locators we have been using for a safer string alternative,” said Sheets. “With that in mind, we are offering a free service to all NASP instructors who bring their archers and bows to the tournament. We will replace all the brass locators on your bows with the newly approved string nock locators.”

“I am still amazed by how much fun the archers have taking part in this friendly competition of the NASP tournament,” said Hershberger.

“Even though archers hope to take home an individual award or be part of a team that takes a trophy back to school, the smiles on everyone’s faces prove they just enjoy being there – being part of something great.”

“Many people who attend the state tournament are also impressed by the diversity of the archers taking part. Archery is quite unique in that you don’t have to be very strong, super quick or even tall to be successful. Archery is truly a skill that anyone enjoy throughout their life,” Hershberger said.

Registration for the NASP State Tournament is done through your school’s archery program. Schools are encouraged to field a team, however individual archers from a school can take part as well. More information, as well as guidelines and forms, is available online at <a

More information, as well as guidelines and forms, is available online at www.OutdoorNebraska.org under NGPC Programs. Registrations will be taken through March 15.

Brought to you by - AMMO LAND.COM - Firearms & Shooting Sports News 48 schools to participate, nearly 850 students will compete.

COLUMBUS, OHIO - -(OutdoorWire.com)- The third annual Ohio National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Tournament will be held on Friday, March 6 at the Ohio Expo Center’s Lausche Building, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The tournament is held in conjunction with the Arnold Classic Sports Festival in Columbus.

Ohio NASP participating schools will compete for team and individual awards in high school, middle school and elementary school divisions. Qualifying teams and individuals in each division will represent Ohio as they challenge for a national title at the NASP National Competition this summer in Kentucky.

“The tournament is an excellent opportunity for students and teams that participate in the program to showcase their hard work and dedication,” states Kevin Dixon, shooting sports coordinator for the Division of Wildlife. “The event not only gives students the chance to experience competitive shooting, but also brings together like-minded students from across the state who are interested in archery.”

Ohio launched the NASP program to a pilot group of 12 schools in 2004. Five years later, there are 307 schools in Ohio with teachers certified to instruct target archery through the NASP program; a program which is rapidly growing and gaining popularity among students and educators.

The NASP program teaches target archery to elementary, middle and high school students in the school gym. Curriculum covers archery, safety, equipment, technique, concentration skills and self improvement.

Often when students are introduced to the sport of archery, the in-school educational component is only the beginning. Many NASP participating schools start after school programs and archery teams. Since its inception in 2004, more than 30,000 students have been introduced to archery as part of their physical education (PE) classes in 150 W.Va. schools. The program teaches Olympic-style target archery in both public and private school grade 4-12 PE classes. “In order for a school to have the AIS Program, it must first have a certified instructor – preferably a PE instructor or a coach who will introduce as many kids as possible to the joys of target archery,” said Westfall. “The WVDNR only has about four trainings per year and, because class size is limited to 25 individuals, these slots are highly sought after. As an added incentive, teachers taking this training may be eligible to receive Continuing Education Hours.”

Please note this training will cost $25 for all school employees and $50 for non-school employees. This fee will be paid to WVDNR – Archery in the Schools Program (via check, money order, or exact currency only) during the first morning of the training.

To register for the AIS training at North Bend State Park please call Billie Shearer at (304) 558-2771; email billieshearer@wvdnr.gov. For more information on the AIS Program, you can visit the WVDNR’s AIS Web site at <a
