/> NASP is an in-school archery curriculum that meets all education department standards. Only schools that are certified in NASP through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are qualified to compete in the State Tournament. Schools in nearly 70 counties in Georgia are NASP certified.

The program promotes instruction in international-style target archery to improve educational performance and participation in shooting sports. Research has shown that the program, administered through a minimum two-week course during the school year, improves class attendance and behavior. NASP universal fit bows make it possible for students of all sizes and genders to succeed in archery while raising self-esteem levels and improving hand-eye coordination during physical activity.

NASP is taught in 47 states and six other countries. To date, more than nine million students have participated in the program.

For more information on NASP in Georgia, call Jennifer Pittman at (770) 918-6416 or e-mail jennifer.pittman@dnr.state.ga.us .
Tags: <a

Bee scored 292 out of a possible 300 points earning first place in the female division and a NASP World Tournament title.

“When my name was called, I couldn’t believe it, I’m still in shock that I’m first in the world,” Bee said. Bee won more than $4,000 in scholarships, two new bows and a target, among other honors. Hartland also did well as a team, finishing fourth overall and only 15 points from first place.

“The Hartland archery program is an excellent representation of the Department of Natural Resources’ Archery in the Schools Program,” said Mary Emmons, DNR Archery Education coordinator. “Under Hartland Coach Rob Jellison’s direction, the school’s archery team has acquired seven state championships, two top five finishes at worlds, one national champion and one world record since the program started in 2007.”

DNR Director Rodney Stokes honored Bee at a recent Natural Resources Commission meeting for her world record achievement by presenting her with a plaque and a letter from Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.

“There is no doubt in my mind that archery is a challenging sport, both physically and mentally, but you can truly get children of every age, size, and athletic ability shooting arrows safely down range,” said Jellison, “I love seeing some of my star athletes from other sports shooting on the same team as students who have never been on a ‘team’ until archery.”

The DNR Archery in the Schools introduces international-style target archery to students in 4th through 12th grade physical education classes. The in-school curriculum’s core content covers archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration and self-improvement. To date, more than 500 schools across Michigan have implemented the program.

The DNR offers free archery certification classes for teachers. Additionally, archery equipment grants are available to schools, both public and private, that enroll in the Archery in the Schools program.

For more information on Archery in the Schools, contact Mary Emmons at 517-241-9477 or by email at emmonsm@michigan.gov. Set your 20-yard pin just like you would on any other sight, and then micro-adjust your Retina Lock to align with your eye while your anchor point and hold are perfect. Every shot after that will provide instant feedback that will tell you if there is even the slightest bit of torque or change in your anchor point.

In almost no time at all, you’ll see how the IQ’s Retina Lock reinforces the proper form—no matter the angle of inclination or declination—to build confidence and to ultimately extend your effective shooting range.

Easton Foundation

Newberry, FL --(Ammoland.com)- Miranda Leek, an 18-year old addition to the veteran women’s U.S. Olympic Archery Team, is among the competitors leading the charge towards the 2012 Olympic Games to be held in London.

There is a sense of optimism at the 2011 Pan Am Games that has been missing around the U.S. Women’s camp in past years.

A look at Leek’s development into a standout archer is one reason why hope is so robust on the road to the 2012 Olympics.

Leek was immersed in the sport at the age of 5 when her dad, Scott Leek, took her along to the archery shop, placed a recurve in her hand, gave the basic instructions and let her shoot – planting the seeds that would eventually blossom into her current standing as the second ranked woman archer in the country.

It wasn’t long before the father- daughter target shoots turned into a competitive hobby.

“My dad decided to get me a compound bow, and just for something fun to do he started to take me to local competitions, which we both really enjoyed,” Leek says. “I discovered my competitive side, had lots of fun meeting others with similar interests and making friends. Things just took off from there, one step at a time.”

Leek’s transition from a compound bow to an Olympic-style recurve came at age 12.

“I decided to switch for two reasons,” she says. “There would be a lot more competition in the Olympic-style recurve class than in my class of compound fingers, and the recurve was something else entirely. It looked majestic, and I was fascinated by the equipment and how people shot them.”

Although enthralled with the charm of the recurve, change did not come without challenges. “Both my dad and I didn’t really know how to shoot a recurve. We were both compound archers and we didn’t have a solid understanding of what recurve form would look like. We only had ideas.”

Fortunately, professional archery coach Terry Wunderle and his son Vic, an Olympic archer himself, took Leek under their wings and were her first coaches. They provided the direction she needed to get started and involved in the Olympic-recurve scene.

Their efforts paid off. Leek shined in national youth competitions and was selected to the USA Archery’s Junior Dream Team in 2007, at the age of 14. Here, she was coached by Kisik Lee, who is still her coach today as the National Head Coach of the U.S. Olympic Archery Training Program.

“Coach Lee is really good at catching the little things,” Leek says. “It’s because of my relationship with him that I’ve been able to travel on junior teams and be introduced to what it’s like to compete internationally. He has been a big part of taking me to the big leagues.”

This stable of coaches has been anchored by Leek’s Father’s support and training. Scott Leek has been his daughter’s primary supporter and personal coach, from the day he first put a bow in her hand and every step of the way to where she is now. Scott, a shooter since childhood, has a firm understanding of the sport and passed that along to his daughter. “I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for his understanding of Coach Lee’s technique and his ability to teach me.” Leek says.

But no amount of coaching can replace an individual’s drive and motivation to become an Olympic athlete. Hard work is the basis for keeping Leek’s physical and mental skills up to par.

To train, she shoots six days a week, firing over a hundred arrows each day. In addition, she hits the gym to work on cardio and core training. If this wasn’t rigorous enough, she says she looks forward to stepping up the workload in the next year.

With a strong body comes a strong mind and Leek has also focused on this aspect of the sport.

“I think every archer will agree that archery is definitely more mental than it is physical,” she says. “It’s very important to remain objective and positive while shooting, and always think of what you want to happen. It’s never over until it’s absolutely done; keep fighting.”

After the Olympics Leek looks forward to beginning the college selection process and finding a school that will embrace her talents of archery and a desire to major in biology.

When the London games are in the rearview mirror, Leek hopes to brush off the dust on her compound bow and shoot some field archery and enjoy her other hobbies of playing the piano and spending time with her family, friends and dogs.

But before she starts a normal college life, Leek is focused on winning the gold medal at the London games. Her performance at the Pan Am Games takes her one step closer to that goal.

Leek broke the Pan Am Games and Star FITA record with a score of 338 in the thirty-six arrow from 70 meters event. It is another promising result for Leek and her team.

In the last year, Leek and Team U.S. garnered a team silver at the second stage of the Archery World Cup, a mixed team gold at the third stage of the Archery World Cup, a gold at the 2011 SoCal Showdown (a US Archery Team Qualifier Series Event), and a second place finish in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – First Nomination Shoot.

There is a sense of excitement in the American camp of women archers. It is one different from the hope of past years, where teams with undeniable talent fell short in performance. A large part of this excitement comes from Leek’s arrival on the Olympic scene.
<div

Coach Jener Sato of Brazil, Coach Marja Woortman of Namibia and Coach Meshal Alotaibi of Saudi Arabia all shadowed Coach Robert in his daily duties. The ICECP program includes time spent in Delaware University, the Olympic training center in Colorado Springs, and a 10-day internship at a facility focusing on their specific sport – In this case, the Easton Newberry Sports Complex in Newberry, Fla.

The guest coaches enjoyed lending their hands to a variety of different events that the Complex hosted. These included JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) classes – Beginner to advanced levels and Adult beginner and intermediate classes; a ‘Try Archery’ booth at a local community festival; visiting the local university club; and meeting with varied Easton Newberry staff who help the coaches put together project ideas to advance archery back in their home countries. class="wp-caption-text">National Archery in the Schools Program

USA --(Ammoland.com)- Beginning with practice rounds on Thursday October 6 , 2011, 1,071 kids from around the world arrived at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex with their teams, teachers, parents and siblings to kick off the 2011 National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) World Tournament.

According to NASP President Roy Grimes, “Out of the 1104 students who registered for ‘Worlds’, only thirty-three (3%) students were no-shows.” Grimes also states, “This participation level represents an increase of 19% over the 902 shooters in 2010 and 76% higher than the 609 students at our first world tournament in 2009.”

From these statistics, it’s obvious there is a growing interest for NASP-style archery not only in the United States, but around the world as students from Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa joined the fun.

In fact, for the first time, a “Cultural Exchange” session was conducted at the tournament. Teachers asked for this type of activity to increase the educational experience for student archers. On Friday evening, half-way through the tournament, students from Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa positioned themselves in a booth with their country flags to meet students from the states. The session was so popular it will be expanded next year. Students signed flags, shared information, and answered quizzes about foreign locations. It seemed students most enjoyed comparing each others accent! Prizes were donated during the cultural exchange by Field Logic, Easton Technical Products, and Morrell Manufacturing.

Expanding upon archery’s every-kid attraction, Robert Jellison, a Michigan NASP Coach says, “Archery is a sport that anyone can do and anyone can succeed at. There is no doubt in my mind that archery is a challenging sport, both physically and mentally, but you can truly get children of every age size, and athletic ability shooting arrows safely down range. “Jellison also proclaims how much he loves seeing his, “star athletes from other sports shooting on the same team with students who have never been on a “team” until archery.”

Evidence of Jellison’s diversity assertion was clear as students from all backgrounds, genders, and abilities took center stage during the hour-long awards ceremony on Saturday afternoon.

During the competition every 4th thru 12th grade student archer shot 1 practice end of 5 arrows and 3 scoring ends of 5 arrows at 10 meters. They repeated this shooting format at 15 meters. A total of 30 scoring arrows were shot for a possible score of 300 points and 30 bulls-eyes (300/30). The largest division represented at the tournament with 505 boys and girls was the Elementary Division which includes grades 4th-6th. Winners of their respective grades were as follows:

1st Female 4th Grade: Shelby Goodrich (276/14) — Woodlawn ES, GA

1st Male 4th Grade: Spencer Bartlett (281/15) — Henderson Co. Winners of this Division were:

1st Female Middle School: Ashley Padgett (292/22) — Meade Co , KY

1st Male Middle School: Cody Bush (292/22) — Philo Jr. High, OH

A total of 228 students competed in the High School Division. This division also produced the tournaments top Overall and Runner-Up Overall boy and girl champions.

1st Female HS & Overall Female Champion: Emily Bee (292/23) — Hartland HS, MI

Runner-Up Female Overall: Lauren Hawker (291/22): Armstrong HS, IL

1st Male HS & Overall Male Champion: Ryan Long (296/26) — Madison Southern, KY

Runner-Up Male Overall: Nathan Parcell (295/26) — Meade Co. HS, KY

Of course the team competition is what makes NASP tournaments different from most other archery venues. At this world tournament co-gender teams of 12-24 archers advanced from the NASP Nationals that were held in Louisville, KY. All the archers on each team compete. When their flight is finished scores for the team’s top 12 archers, including at least 4 from both genders, are summed to determine the team’s score.

The top ranking school in the Elementary Division went to Eagle Mountain Magnet, Arkansas with a total score of 3291. In the Middle School Division, the top scoring team was fielded by Logan Hocking Middle School, Ohio with a total score of 3319. And finally, the top ranked school in the High School Division was Henderson County High School, Kentucky, with a total score of 3400.

At the conclusion of the awards ceremony Disney’s Mickey Mouse congratulated the students and their coaches and was still having his picture made with archers as the ceremonies ended. A big congratulations goes out to not only the top ranked archers at this tournament, but to every kid who had enough determination and self-confidence to participate. (And parents and teachers willing to bring them!). Prizes were presented to winners by Mathews, Morrell, Easton, and Field Logic. The University of the Cumberlands awarded $2,400 college scholarships to each of the top five boys and girls in the High School Division. Bernie Morrell of Morrell Manufacturing provided target butts for the competitive and practice ranges. James McGovern of Rinehart Targets provided 15 dinosaur targets for the kids to enjoy on the “fun” 3-D range. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission recruited most tournament volunteers and provided additional range building equipment.

Of course this event would be impossible to present without those dedicated and generous volunteers. Nearly 50 people came from Florida, Virginia, Arizona, British Columbia, New Zealand, Illinois, Kentucky, and Wisconsin to serve as range officials. The most boring location during the entire tournament was again the 1st Aid Station with zero accidents or injuries to treat!

It was evident in the excited smiles of student archers, proud family members and coaches that NASP continues to live up to its claim of “Changing Lives One Arrow at a Time”.

Laura Jones, a teacher in Virginia says “Chickahominy Middle School started out last fall with kids who had never drawn a bow before in their entire lives.” She also says “It was not only their first school experience where they were treated like adults, but their first experience being on a sports team.” Archery has not been just another sport that kids can join and compete, but it is a one that has made kids with little or no confidence, kids who feel like maybe they weren’t good enough, build self-confidence and determination and realize they can do anything they put their minds too. “

Take for example, the Overall Male Champion, Ryan Long. Ryan was an understudy at the Strickland Student Outdoor Adventure filming this summer.

“Ryan advised Roy Grimes in July he intended to win the 2011 NASP world tournament”.

Grimes considered this to be quite an audacious prediction considering Ryan placed fourth at Nationals and those who placed ahead of him would also be at the World event. Ryan validated his prediction!

If you would like to learn more about NASP and how to help our nonprofit foundation bring the program to more students please check us out at: at: www.archeryintheschools.org or www.nasparchery.com
Tags: Ammoland.com)- The Easton Foundations has opened its latest archery center, located in Van Nuys, CA on 15026 Oxnard Street, just minutes from its corporate office.

The Easton Van Nuys Archery Center is the second of the Easton Foundation run centers, which also includes the Easton Newberry Sports Complex in Newberry, FL.

It is part of a system of archery centers that the Foundation is funding, which also includes the Easton Foundation Archery Center in Yankton, SD, a joint program with the NFAA (National Field Archery Association) and the John and Marnie Demmer Shooting Sports Education and Training Center at Michigan State University (MSU).

“The new Easton Van Nuys Archery Center is a fabulous facility and well adapted as an archery complex. Our vision for the center is to develop programs and opportunities for a variety of coaching courses, from beginning to elite, as well as coach and archer training opportunities. As we continue to grow the sport, especially among youth, we will need many more qualified coaches and archery facilities to handle the influx of new archers. The centers The Easton Foundations are developing are a strong and positive step in that direction. ” said Don Rabska, VP of Programs and a member of the Board of Directors.

The Van Nuys center is already home to a local JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) Club and is well utilized by archers from UCLA and California State University, Northridge for practice and training. The facility is also the center for the Foundations’ OAS (Olympic Archery in Schools) Program and a league night on Thursdays. The center will be adding new programs in the near future as well. The facility also hosts coaching courses and currently has coaches and students of various levels training to improve their archery skills.

“The Easton Van Nuys Archery Center is a great resource for OAS. From its start we have been using it for coach and archer training as well as for OAS competitions,” said Keaton Chia, OAS Program Supervisor, “The center has everything we need including a classroom, areas for parents to watch, and a beautiful indoor archery range. The range is fully equipped to host competitions and is also perfect for training archers and coaches. We have targets setup at 18 meters as well as at a shorter distance which is great for archers working on their form and technique. The center is also outfitted with large mirrors and other training aids. I am excited that this resource is available to our schools and youth. I look forward to the many events we will be holding at the center and for the impact it will make on the community.”

This new facility includes a 12 lane, back to back 18 meter and 7 meter indoor range, eating and viewing area for guests and conference/training room as well as offices and a warehouse.

The training center will be open to archers and coaches involved in JOAD, OAS and other programs. Interested parties should contact Idida Briones at (818) 901-0127 ext. 202 or ibriones@esdf.org.

For more information on the Easton Foundations, a full listing of our programs, grant recipients, and / or information on the grant selection process please go to our website at www.EastonFoundations.org or contact Ms. Idida Briones at (818) 901-0127 ext. 202 or via email at ibriones@esdf.org.

About the Easton Foundations:
Carbon Express

Flushing, Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- Crossbow hunting has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past few years, and I don’t think anyone can deny that the sport is here to stay.

There are more opportunities than ever, and an increasing list of states are providing special seasons or allowing crossbows to be used during traditional archery seasons. Crossbow hunting is here to stay, and after participating in the sport for the last two years, I have to say that I think it is incredibly fun.

I also like the fact that crossbow hunting brings youth into “bowhunting” at an age before they can competently use a vertical bow to harvest animals. It also will extend the hunting lifetime of older hunters who may not be able to draw a vertical bow as they become elderly. I have seen this with my two young sons as well as my father after he had heart surgery.

So enough about the virtues of crossbows in general! I own an original Carbon Express Covert 3.5 crossbow that the company came out with a few years ago. It is a great bow, my kids have racked up a ton of deer and turkeys with it, and my dad and I have also both killed turkeys with it. I couldn’t imagine it getting much better until I learned about the new CX I and 2 crossbows that are CX’s second generation.

How are these crossbows better and why should I pick them over anything else out there I asked, so I went straight to the source to find out, and I talked to Carbon Express COO John Biafore about it.

He began with, “BioSync Technology is the biggest attribute of these new crossbows that set them apart. What that technology is all about is Body-Bow- Bolt. We want the bow to fit the body, and then the bolt to work at maximum efficiency with the bow for a perfect fit all the way around. That way when someone hunts with our crossbow, he doesn’t have to be thinking about the crossbow, bolt or our equipment; he can simply concentrate on the hunt, and that’s how it should be.”

Biafore explained, “Our original Coverts were great, but we wanted them more comfortable. So we took a lot of weight out and improved the balance of the crossbow. Most of this came out of the front end of the crossbow, but it made it much more comfortable. It no longer feels like you are dragging around a log with you to a treestand or blind.”

Carbon Express now has a premium line of crossbow bolts available in their now famous Maxima line. There is a Maxima Hunter and a Kevlar coated maxima Hunter KV. What sets these bolts apart are that they have Dual Spine Weight Forward Technology just like the Maxima line of arrows, and they are properly spined for the CX crossbows. The Dual Spine Weight Forward means that the dynamic and static spine of the bolt has been considered, so this means the front end of the bolt flexes more giving forgiveness, while the back end is stiffer and recovers quicker. This is what makes an arrow or bolt perform to its maximum, and these are the most technologically sound bolts that can be bought. In short, the bolts and the crossbows being matched up will simply perform better.

So we now see what BioSync is all about. The bow is comfortable, and it shoots great. What else is so good about the CX line I asked?

Biafore answered, “We really feel that not only are these great crossbows from a technical and performance standpoint, they are also the best value on the market. The CX 1 crossbow package comes in at $499 and the CS 2 at $599. The difference is the CX 1 is a 330fps bow and the CX 2 is 360 fps. These packages both include the crossbow, a 4×32 illuminated scope, a quiver, rail lube as well as three Maxima Hunter bolts. It is a package that is ready to sight in and take to the field. Also, with these bolts, we haven’t tried to bump our speeds up, our bolts perform at our published fps speeds.”

When speaking on price, John expounded, “Carbon Express is entrenched as a high quality arrow company, but that doesn’t automatically transfer over to the new crossbow market. We know we make a great product, but we also know we have to earn the consumer’s crossbow business, so making a great valued package is what we decided was the best route to begin earning that business. We absolutely want to be best in class both in performance and price.”

My last question was besides being a great shooting crossbow that sells at an incredibly fair price, what other things might a potential buyer want to consider in the CX line?

Biafore said, “The package obviously offers a lot, but also consider that we cut no corners to get to that price. The crossbows are made with anodized aluminum flight rail, proven carbon infused limbs and premium strings and cables. There is an anti-dryfire mechanism that is very important for safety.”

After the fun my family and I have had over the past two years crossbow hunting, even though our Covert 3.5 is still incredibly accurate, I am going to have to consider one of the new CX 2’s. I have two close friends who bought them recently, and they are fantastic all the way around. After talking with Biafore and understanding more about BioSync, I am really leaning toward the upgrade. If you are in the market for a crossbow, you owe it to yourself to check the newest CX’s from Carbon Express.

About Carbon Express
Pennsylvania Game Commission

HARRISBURG, PA --(Ammoland.com)- Pennsylvania’s fall archery deer season is set to open throughout the Commonwealth, and represents the beginning of big game hunting seasons in the state, said Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe.

Statewide archers can hunt antlered or antlerless deer from Oct. 1 to Nov. 12, and the late statewide archery deer season runs from Dec. 26 to Jan. 16.

However, bowhunters who purchased and received antlerless deer licenses to hunt in Wildlife Management Units 2B, 5C and 5D were able to begin their season on Sept. 17-Sept. 30, for antlerless deer only. Hunters in these three urbanized WMUs also have extra antlerless deer hunting opportunities from Nov. 14-Nov. 26. Bowhunters also may take antlered and antlerless deer in these units from Dec. 26-Jan. 28.

Archery hunters may choose to use a long, recurve or compound bow, or a crossbow. Bows must have a draw weight of at least 35 pounds; crossbows must have a minimum drawn weight of at least 125 pounds. Broadheads on either an arrow or a bolt must have an outside diameter or width of at least seven-eighths inches with at least two cutting edges on the same plane throughout the length of the cutting surface, and shall not exceed three inches in length.

The Game Commission encourages hunters to spend as much time as possible afield this fall prior to and during the hunting seasons to pattern deer movements and identify areas where fall foods are abundant.

“Hunt as often as you can, and scout every time you head afield,” Roe said. “Try to figure out which food sources deer are using. And pay attention to prevailing wind direction. These adjustments really can make a difference.”

Those participating in the archery seasons are urged to take only responsible shots at deer to ensure a quick, clean kill. For most, that’s a shot of 20 yards or less at a deer broadside or quartering away. Archery and crossbow hunters should shoot at only deer that are within their maximum effective shooting range – the furthest distance from which a hunter can consistently place arrows or bolts into a pie pan-sized target.

Hunters may use illuminated nocks for arrows and bolts; they aid in tracking or locating the arrow or bolt after being launched. However, transmitter-tracking arrows still are illegal.

Tree-stands and climbing devices that cause damage to trees are unlawful to use or occupy unless the user has written permission from the landowner. Treestands – or tree steps – penetrating a tree’s cambium layer cause damage, and it is unlawful to construct or occupy constructed tree-stands on State Game Lands, state forests or state parks.

Hunters are reminded of a new regulation that limits the placement of portable hunting treestands and blinds from two weeks before the opening of the first big game season to two weeks after the close of the last big game season within each respective Wildlife Management Unit, excluding the spring gobbler season. As approved, hunters will be able to place their treestands on State Game Lands two weeks prior to the archery deer season, and then have to remove the stands two weeks after the late flintlock deer seasons.

“Hunters need to remember that locating a treestand on State Game Lands does not reserve a hunting area,” Roe said. “The first person to arrive in a certain spot has the right to hunt that area.”

Other safety tips bowhunters should consider before heading afield and while hunting include:

- Make sure someone knows where you’re hunting and when you expect to return home. Leave a note or topographic map with your family or a friend. Pack a cellular telephone for emergencies.

- Always use a fall-restraint device – preferably a full-body harness – when hunting from a tree-stand. Wear the device from the moment you leave the ground until you return. Don’t climb dead, wet or icy trees. Stay on the ground on blustery days.

- Get in good physical condition before the season starts. Fatigue can impact judgment, coordination and reaction time, as well as accuracy. Staying physically fit makes a difference.

- Always carry a whistle to signal passersby in the event you become immobile. A compass and matches or lighter and tinder also are essential survival gear items to have along. An extra flashlight bulb also can be helpful.

- Use a hoist rope to lift your bow and backpack to your tree-stand. Trying to climb with either will place you at unnecessary risk.

- Don’t sleep in a tree-stand! If you can’t stay awake, return to the ground.

- Always carry broadhead-tipped arrows in a protective quiver.

- If you use a mechanical release, always keep your index finger away from the trigger when drawing.

- Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for all equipment and check your equipment before each use.

- Practice climbing with your tree-stand before dawn on the opening day of the season. Consider placing non-slip material on the deck of your tree-stand if it’s not already there.

-Never walk with a nocked, broadhead-tipped arrow or bolt.

-Cocked crossbows should always be pointed in a safe direction. Keep your thumb and fingers below the crossbow’s string and barrel at all times.

Tags: Ohio Department Natural Resources

COLUMBUS, OH --(Ammoland.com)- Approximately 345,000 bowhunters, representing more than half of all Ohioans who hunt deer, are expected to participate in the statewide archery deer hunting season that opens September 24, according the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Wildlife.

During last year’s four-month archery season, bowhunters killed 85,012 deer, a decrease of seven percent from the previous year. Crossbow hunters took 44,123 of that number and longbow hunters took 40,889 deer. Overall, archers accounted for 35 percent of 239,475 deer taken during Ohio’s combined 2010-11 archery, muzzleloader and gun seasons.

Licking County led the state in both the vertical bow and crossbow harvest. Coshocton, Tuscarawas, Ashtabula, and Holmes rounded out the top five counties in crossbow harvest, while Coshocton, Tuscarawas, Muskingum, and Knox completed the list of top five counties in vertical bow harvest.

“I expect both the pre-hunt deer population and the harvest to be near their three-year averages of 750,000 and 250,000 deer, respectively,” said Mike Tonkovich, Division of Wildlife deer project leader.

All hunters must still report their harvest of deer, but they are no longer required to take their deer to a check station for physical inspection. Hunters will have three options to complete the automated game check:

On the Internet at www.wildohio.com or www.ohiogamecheck.com
By telephone at 1-877-TAG-ITOH(1-877-824-4864). This option is only available to those who are required to purchase a turkey permit to hunt turkeys.
At all license agents

Game-check transactions will be available online and by telephone seven days a week and during holidays. Landowner hunters who are not required to purchase a deer permit must use the Internet or any license agent to check their deer. Hunters who tag their deer as a landowner harvest cannot use the phone-in method. All authorized license sales agents will also check in your game. A list of these agents can be found at www.ohiodnr.com/wildlife/dow/regulations/vendor.aspx or by calling 1-800-WILDLIFE.

The Division of Wildlife remains committed to reducing populations where needed. Through a combination of both regulatory and programmatic changes, progress toward reducing locally abundant herds can be expected.

Ohio hunters are also encouraged to kill more does again this season, using the reduced-priced antlerless deer permit to help the needy in their area. The Division of Wildlife is collaborating with Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry (FHFH) to help pay for the processing of donated venison. Hunters who donate their deer to a food bank are not required to pay the processing cost as long as funding for the effort lasts. More information about this program can be found online at www.fhfh.org.

All deer hunters are required to have a valid Ohio hunting license and a valid deer permit. The $15 antlerless deer permit will be valid September 24 through November 27 in Zones A and B. The $15 antlerless deer permit will be valid through December 4 in Zone C only. However, the $15 antlerless permit may be purchased only until November 27, 2011.

This year’s statewide archery season remains open from September 24 through February 5, 2012, including the week of deer-gun season November 28 through December 4. Deer-gun hunters will also be able to enjoy an additional weekend of hunting December 17 and 18. Archers may hunt one half-hour before sunrise to one half-hour after sunset, except during the statewide gun, youth and muzzleloader seasons when they are one half-hour before sunrise to sunset. Archers hunting during the statewide gun, youth or muzzleloader seasons must meet the hunter orange requirements of those seasons.

To hunt deer in Ohio, hunters must possess a deer permit in addition to a valid hunting license. State law allows hunters to take only one antlered buck per year, regardless the type of deer season, deer permit or weapon used for deer hunting.

A detailed listing of deer hunting rules is contained in the 2011-2012 Ohio Hunting Regulations, available where licenses are sold, or may be viewed online at wildohio.com.

The ODNR ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- The next West Virginia Archery in the Schools (AIS) Program instructor training session will be Nov. 29 – 30 at the Gander Mountain Store in South Charleston, according to Krista Snodgrass, AIS program coordinator for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. The registration deadline is Nov. 11.

The AIS Program is the DNR’s largest and fastest growing educational program. Since its inception in 2004, approximately 60,000 students have been introduced to archery as part of their physical education (PE) classes in 248 West Virginia schools. The program teaches Olympic-style target archery in both public and private schools’ Grade 4-12 PE classes.

“In order for schools to have the AIS Program, they must first have a certified instructor – preferably a PE instructor or coach who will introduce as many kids as possible to the joys of target archery,” said Snodgrass. “The DNR offers about four trainings a year; and, because class size is limited to 25, training slots are highly sought after. To ensure a training slot, we encourage PE teachers and coaches to apply as soon as possible.”

As an added incentive, teachers taking this training may be eligible to receive Continuing Education Hours.

This training will cost $25 for all school employees and $50 for non-school employees. This fee will be paid to “WV DNR – Archery in the Schools Program” by check, money order, or exact currency during the first morning of the training.

To register for the AIS training at the Gander Mountain Store in South Charleston please call Krista Snodgrass at 304-558-2771; Krista.R.Snodgrass@wv.gov

For general information on the AIS Program, visit the DNR’s AIS website at www.wvdnr.gov/archery.
Tags: Ammoland.com)- Easton Sports Development Foundation and the National Field Archery Association Foundation are pleased to announce the Archery Scholarship Recipients for 2011.

$16,000 in total scholarships was awarded to 23 student athletes in middle school, high school, and college that compete with either compound or recurve bows.

Individual scholarship awards varied from $500 to $2,500. Top scholarships were awarded to Forrest Blakley of Cobdin, Illinois and Riley Whiting of Logan, Utah.

“Archery is a lifestyle for me and has taught me discipline which has benefitted me not only in the field but also in the classroom”, Forrest stated.

He is pursuing a degree in Agricultural Engineering at Shawnee Community College in southern Illinois where he also started an archery team. Forrest has been on the US Junior USAT for two years and participated as a member of the Junior World Indoor and Outdoor teams. He plans on attending the Olympic trials this fall.

Riley said, “Receiving this scholarship is not only a pleasure, but it creates a wonderful opportunity for me to go to college and accomplish my goals and dreams in archery.” Riley recently made the United States Junior team and will be competing in Poland in mid-August.

“Forrest and Riley are both outstanding athletes that developed their archery skill in youth programs, and have become seasoned competitive archers and we are very pleased to award each of them our top $2,500 scholarship awards for 2011″, stated Bruce Cull, President, NFAA.

NFAA Scholarships were first awarded in 1990 to student athletes that compete in archery and excel in academic and intellectual achievement. The limitations of the original scholarship program were resolved in 2009 with the creation of the joint NFAA/Easton Foundation Scholarship Program. “The Easton and NFAA Foundations share the goal to support student athletes that compete in archery. We believe these scholarships will help us to develop stronger college archery programs and strengthen future Olympic and World Championship Teams.

By combining our respective Foundation programs, we can award more student scholarships, and increase the scholarship levels. In 2011, $16,000 was awarded to 23 recipients. We expect the number of applications to increase in future years, and plan to award up to $50,000 in total annual scholarships in 2012,” said Greg Easton, President Easton Foundations.

The 2009-11 scholarships are funded by an initial $150,000 grant from the Easton Foundation to the Easton-NFAA Foundation Scholarship Program. Future net revenue from the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Complex, plus scholarship donations from both individuals and companies will be held in an endowment account to fund the scholarships in 2012 and beyond.

Dave Gordon, of Gordon Composites, made a large personal contribution to the scholarship endowment fund. Dave stated, “Archery has been a big part of both my personal and business success. I believe the Easton-NFAA Foundation Scholarship program is an outstanding program to support our youth archers, and allows me to give back to the sport I love. Awarding our best archers and student athletes scholarships that allow them to pursue further education while competing in archery will help develop much stronger youth and college archery programs. I encourage everyone that shares my passion for archery and desire to support our young archers to make their own donation to the scholarship program.” Individuals or companies interested in donating to the scholarship endowment fund or learning more about the program are encouraged to contact Bruce Cull, NFAA President. The NFAA Foundation is a 501(c )3 Public Charity and all donations meet the IRS requirements as charitable donations.

Scholarship applications, program requirements, and additional information is available on the NFAA website at www.fieldarchery.com, or from the NFAA Headquarters, 800 Archery Lane, Yankton, SD 57078. All applications for 2012 scholarships must be submitted to the NFAA Office by December 31, 2011. For additional information contact Natalie Vollmer, NFAA Executive Secretary, at 605-260-9279 or at info@fieldarchery.com.
Tags: U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance

Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- With fall days sweeping across much of North America, it’s the time when hunters everywhere think of two related topics: archery and white-tailed deer.

Generally, archery seasons are a relatively new concept with many being created by state game departments during the 1950s and 60s.

Today, an estimated 9 million Americans participate in archery, and many of those are bowhunters.

Increasing whitetail deer numbers have meant more hunting opportunities—and sometimes more controversy. The deer numbers have grown across America thanks to conservation, wildlife management, and increased interest by hunters and landowners. Hunting areas and seasons have expanded thanks to the work of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and sportsmen nationwide to defend hunting through Congress, the courts and legislatures coast to coast. Today, every state offers an archery hunting season—and with that, many reasons to grab a bow and some arrows, and head afield.

The Basics
Bowhunting is a “back-to-the-basics” adventure. Once you have a bow and arrows, you are nearly ready to go hunting. Most hunters also add sights, a release aid, quiver, silencers, stabilizers, a rest—and other gear to their bow. Others utilize more traditional equipment which is mainly a recurve or longbow with few add-ons.

Additionally, you will need broadheads, practice points, a backstop, and possibly a treestand or blind. To be certain that you have and use the proper arrows for your bow and archery plans, select the proper arrow. More details are at: www.eastonarchery.com/download/selectioncharts. Then, after some practice and refining your proficiency at given distances, you’ll need to turn your attention to hunting areas and the animals you wish to hunt.

Deer motivate approximately 90% of the U.S. hunting market expenditures, and most bowhunters have visions of whitetails and mule deer in their minds. Of course, you can also hunt bear, elk, pronghorns, wild boar, turkeys in some states, and small game species, like squirrels, with your bow. In numerous states, archery licenses are affordable and available over-the-counter.

If you do want to improve your archery skills or learn more about bowhunting, consider joining an archery league, shooting at a 3-D course, or taking a state game department bowhunter education course. Some state’s might offer special youth hunts in case you have a young bowhunter seeking a place to go hunting.

Bowhunting success often comes to those who take the time to learn their bow and gear, the fine details about the animal they hunt, and their personal limitations. As a rule, bowhunting requires that hunters get within 30 to 40 yards of the animal.

The good news is that many bowhunting seasons are open when the weather is warm, fall leaves are colorful, and deer are often on the move in search of acorns and other foods or when they are in mating season. Well-worn game trails can reveal the best places to hang a treestand, place a store purchased blind, or build your own blind, and settle in for your wait.

The Future
While anti-hunting and animal rights organizations have worked to stop or curtail bowhunting mopportunities, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance has worked to protect bowhunting—and expand opportunities. The USSA was the leader in creating the Bowhunting Rights Coalition in 2005 that brought together some of the nation’s premier hunting organizations to defend against anti-archery legislation in several states. In recent times, the Coalition has helped open Sunday bowhunting seasons and other opportunities.

About the USSA:
The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliances watchdog efforts protect the rights of hunters, anglers and trappers in the courts, legislatures, at the ballot, in Congress, and through many public education programs. The USSA has more than 150,000 registered Sentries that regularly receive information about conservation issues, and then they actively work to promote and protect scientific conservation through calls and contacts. class="wp-caption-text">National Archery in the Schools Program

USA --(Ammoland.com)- The Easton Foundations (EF) have again partnered with the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) to provide $300,000 in grant assistance for schools to enroll in this exciting program.

Over the next few months, each of the 47 NASP states, 5 Provinces, and Washington DC will be allocated $6,000.

Last school year was the first time NASP and EF partnered to provide these equipment grants.

While the grants were intended to assist 300 schools, 517 new NASP schools actually received grants.

Once educators at a prospect school learn about NASP, the next biggest obstacle to bringing archery instruction to their students is the purchase of the archery equipment kit. Thanks to very cooperative pricing by NASP suppliers, the equipment kit costs a school far less than its retail value. Even so, it costs about $3,000 to outfit a typical Physical Education archery class of 24-36 students. NASP’s equipment specifications are highly standardized in every school world-wide. Each school uses the same bow and arrow. The Genesis by Mathews Archery is a high quality universal-fit compound bow designed for sharing among several student archers. The Genesis arrow was specifically designed by Easton Technical Products to be safe, durable, and effective for the archery student.

This principle of every student using the same equipment in archery class makes certain the focus of student learning is on mastering the process of safe and proper shooting. If different types of equipment were used the teacher’s role would be more complicated, NASP®’s perfect safety record could be impacted, and the student’s mastery of how to shoot could be short-circuited.

Most of the more than 8,800 schools that have joined the program to date have been able to purchase their equipment with little help from outside sources. However, many schools are unable to raise this money without assistance. Some schools raise money locally among civic organizations, conservation clubs or chapters of the National Wild Turkey Foundation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, or Safari Club International. Innovative teachers enlist the aid of parents to hold fund raising events to raise money for equipment. In many NASP jurisdictions the fish and wildlife conservation agency provides grants for the purchase of school archery equipment kit.

To help alleviate financial barriers we at NASP are excited about the generosity of the Easton Foundations (EF). EF is a non-profit foundation established by James L. Easton for the purpose of training and developing a pool of world class archers able to compete at the highest levels. The strategy used to accomplish the Foundation’s purpose is the creation or support of programs to develop archers at many levels in order to strengthen and deepen the available talent pool. “The Easton Foundations have supported NASP Schools for a number of years with equipment grants directly to the schools, support of the NASP School Equipment Grant Program allows us to assist more schools and leverage the great work of the NASP organization and State Coordinators”, commented Greg Easton from the Easton Foundations. For more about the Easton Foundations visit www.eastonfoundations.org

This grant offer is popular with coordinators who run NASP in their respective states.

Tim Beck, the Indiana DNR NASP Coordinator reports, “These equipment grants have allowed many Indiana schools to join and participate in this unique and engaging program. There is no doubt, without this type of boost some of our students would not be able to join the fun.” Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission’s Steve Robbins tells us, “Our agency provides a limited number of grants to start new NASP schools. These EF and NASP grants help even more private and public schools join Florida’s NASP effort. We have teachers waiting and hoping the grant will be renewed this year.”

The National Archery in the Schools Program is in its 10th year. title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- As Explore Bowhunting wraps up its two-year pilot phase, its coordinators are preparing to offer this innovative program to beginner bowhunters around the country.

During the past two years, Explore Bowhunting worked with a $266,000 Multistate Conservation Grant from the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (AFWA) to collaborate with states on testing, modifying and implementing the program.

“The goal of the grant was to test the Explore Bowhunting curriculum, get feedback from students and teachers, and see how states implemented it in urban and suburban settings,” said Emily Beach, ATA education and research manager. “They helped us fine-tune the program and learn the best ways to implement it in other states. It’s been a great success, and now the ATA is ready to launch it on a national scale in 2012.”

Explore Bowhunting Prepares for Nationwide Campaign

The AFWA grant was conceived to implement Explore Bowhunting in six states, but eight states will already be operating the program by the end of this year. The states with Explore Bowhunting now in place are Arizona, Michigan, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Virginia and Kentucky. Alabama and Missouri will launch the program this fall.

In addition to the AFWA grant, Explore Bowhunting received extensive support from 37 archery manufacturers that signed on as sponsors. This included Pape’s Archery Inc., which served as the warehouse and distributor for equipment donated by manufacturers for Explore Bowhunting.

“The sponsors and Pape’s were extremely generous in helping ATA launch the pilot programs,” Beach said. “The equipment donations of bows, arrows, calls, clothing and other gear exceeded $50,000, so this was a great example of industry teamwork. We let the sponsors know what equipment we needed for the program, and Pape’s shipped everything at no charge.”

Beach said the 74 Explore Bowhunting pilot sessions will have trained 245 instructors and sent about 2,500 students through the program by the end of 2011. About 120 instructors were trained this summer alone. The programs were held in middle schools and high schools through in-school and after-school programs, as well as park-and-recreation departments, church groups, scouts, summer camps, state programs, archery retailers and home-schools.

Beach said the ATA looks forward to launching Explore Bowhunting nationally in the months ahead. “The pilot program served its purpose because, as expected, implementing a program is more difficult than writing it,” she said. “We learned a lot of important lessons the past couple of years, which should make us very efficient as we work with more states implementing the program.”

The Archery Trade Association created Explore Bowhunting – a comprehensive outdoor educational program – in response to the decline in hunting and fishing licenses sold nationwide. Explore Bowhunting is designed to recruit youngsters ages 11 to 17 into hunting by teaching basic skills needed for bowhunting, photography, and watching and enjoying wildlife and the outdoors.
Tags: Ammoland.com)- Even though most of the country is still in the grip of scorching temperatures, hunters already are thinking about early season hunting opportunities.

Taking a hunter safety course at hunter-ed.com or bowhunter-ed.com is a great way to prepare for bowhunting and early season dove, duck and goose hunting.

“Studying at hunter-ed.com and bowhunter-ed.com is free to the public and allows students to learn about hunter safety in the comfort of their home,” said Kurt Kalkomey, president of Kalkomey Enterprises, Inc.

“These days it’s a challenge to find a free weekend or multiple week nights to take the classroom hunter safety course. The hunter-ed.com and bowhunter-ed.com online courses save time and money and open up hunting opportunities for young and novice hunters.”

Students can take the first step toward receiving their hunter or bowhunter certification by successfully completing the online courses for hunter education or bowhunting. Those who must be certified before they can buy a hunting license pay a one-time fee, which is due only if they pass the test. Students can take the test as many times as they need to pass it. Online hunter safety and bowhunting education courses are available in participating states so students should visit hunter-ed.com or bowhunter-ed.com to take a course specific to their state.

After passing the exam at hunter-ed.com or bowhunter-ed.com, students should immediately print out a Field Day Qualifier Certificate, which admits them to a field day in their state (if applicable). Many states require students to pre-register for field days, so hunter education coordinators advise students to visit their state wildlife agency website to sign up. Field days typically include a skills trail, shooting exercises, ethics presentation, and a final hunter education exam.

The contents at hunter-ed.com are developed in conjunction with the state agency responsible for hunter education. Students who use hunter-ed.com will study the same content used in classroom courses.

Bowhunter-ed.com is the official online course of the National Bowhunter Education Foundation (NBEF) and is approved by all states requiring successful completion of a recognized bowhunter education course.

About Kalkomey
Kalkomey Enterprises, Inc. is the official provider of recreational safety education materials for all 50 states. Our print, Internet, and DVD safety courses have been providing official safety certification for states since 1995. We provide safety courses in boating, hunting, bowhunting, and off-road vehicle (ORV) and snowmobile operation. For more information, visit the Kalkomey Enterprises website.
Tags: Ammoland.com)- A new archery range at Rock Hawk in Putnam County is now available for archers, bow hunters, youth groups and others interested in perfecting their target skills.

The archery range was constructed through a partnership between Georgia Department of Natural Resources/Wildlife Resources Division (WRD), Georgia Power, Putnam County, University of Georgia, and Historic Piedmont Scenic By-way Corporation.

Using Pittman-Robertson federal grant money, WRD supplied materials needed for construction while Georgia Power will manage, administer and maintain it.

The range consists of a static range with lanes starting at 10 yards in length. Here, archers shoot into large “bow butt” targets secured inside freestanding sheds. The second range is a 3-D trail with realistic animal targets on 17 lanes. The targets include a mix of Georgia’s game animals.

The range will serve as a resource for area archers, archery youth groups and bow hunters, as well as for Rock Hawk programming activities, and for school groups participating in the National Archery in Schools Program. Users should bring their own equipment. To reduce impact to targets, broadheads are not allowed. The range is open during daylight hours.

Rock Hawk is an outdoor classroom with hundreds of educational displays along 15 miles of trails that surround and lead to the Rock Hawk effigy. It is located near the Historical Piedmont Scenic Byway (Ga. 16).

To learn more about archery opportunities in Georgia, visit www.georgiawildlife.com/hunting/archery-shooting-ranges ; for more information on National Archery in the Schools Program, visit www.georgiawildlife.com/nasp; for more about Rock Hawk, visit www.rockhawk.org .
Tags: <a

Members are encouraged to save time by paying their dues and renewing their memberships online.

They can also pay by mailing back the paperwork with a check, or faxing it in after completing the “cc” info on the order.

An additional 300 retail members whose commitment ends June 30 will receive a request for information to become verified and eligible to renew. These members will not receive a dues order, so they will not be able to renew online. They must mail or fax the required information for ATA verification.

Starting this year, all retailers will be part of the “Archery Pro Shop Retailer” membership category. title="AmmoLand Reports" href="http://www.ammoland.com/" target="_self">Ammoland.com)- Schaffer Performance Archery is proud to introduce the Opposition Arrow Rest – a unique arrow rest that eliminates many of the problems associated with traditional full-containment drop-away arrow rests.

As bow speeds increase, arrows are leaving the string faster than the launcher arm on the arrow rest can get out of the way, resulting in the arrow coming into contact with the rest which reduces accuracy.

The Opposition Arrow Rest solves this problem with Dual Jaw Technology. The rest has two jaws: one jaw squeezes the arrow from the left, one jaw squeezes the arrow from the right. When the bow is fired, each jaw glides out of the way, allowing the arrow to pass between the jaws without touching the rest. The jaws can’t bounce back so arrow and vane contact is a thing of the past. In fact, the Opposition rest can handle arrow speeds in excess of 418 FPS!

The rest is whisper quiet, easy to paper tune and because the jaws pinch the arrow into the center of the rest, every time the bow is drawn, the arrow is locked into place. So regardless if a hunter is stalking a mule deer or shaking like a leaf aiming at the whitetail buck of a lifetime, the arrow will not shake, wobble or vibrate. It is locked into position.

The jaws on the Opposition rest are made of bomb-proof Delrin which can handle anything Mother Nature can throw at it. Other key features include custom fit riser lock side plates that fit snugly onto the riser of the bow, making the rest and riser one and eliminating the chance of the rest coming loose or vibrating during the shot.

The Opposition rest has an easy push button that allows the archer to lock the arrow in place before they draw if they choose. If the button is not pushed ahead of time, the jaws quickly squeeze the arrow upon drawing the bow.

The Opposition Arrow Rest rounds out a complete line of innovative products from Schaffer Performance Archery including the Opposition bow sight.

The Opposition Rest: It’s like putting your arrow in a vice! No wiggling, no jiggling; just super smooth performance, shot after shot.

For more information about Schaffer Performance Archery Products visit <a
