Moline, IL --(Ammoland.com)- Every story needs a beginning, an established point in time at which something starts. It is a beginning that allows a story to move forward and evolve.

The beginning of the Winchester Repeating Arms Company started with inventor Walter Hunt’s 1848 “Volition Repeating Rifle” and its caseless “Rocket Ball” ammunition.

Hunt was a prolific inventor who invented the safety pin, lockstitch needle and fountain pen. But for the Winchester story to begin we need to focus our attention on U.S. Patent 6663 which was granted to Hunt in 1849.

The patent is for Hunt’s .54 caliber tubular magazine rifle, the “Volition Repeater”. The rifle used a coil spring to operate the firing pin and a trigger forced a cartridge into the barrel chamber by moving the breech bolt rearward. Essentially, the trigger design was the ancestor of the lever action of later arms. The rifle also used Hunt’s own patented loaded bullet which he called “Rocket Balls”. This type of ammunition was loaded with powder and to prevent the powder from escaping, the bullet was capped with a cork wad covered in paper which had a flash hole in the center. Only one Hunt rifle is known to have been produced and that rifle now resides in the Cody Firearms Museum.

Showcasing Winchester Beginnings at Rock Island Auction Company

In December 1849, Lewis Jennings received U.S. Patent 6973 for his improvement of the Hunt rifle design. Jennings’ improved version of Hunt’s rifle was manufactured in small numbers by Robbins & Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont, and was a commercial failure. Smith & Wesson of the Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson partnership of Norwich, Connecticut, acquired Jennings’ improved version of the original “Volition Repeater”. Financially aided by New York financier Courtlandt C. Palmer who originally purchased the manufacturing rights of the failed Jennings rifle, Smith & Wesson began to produce their version of the improved repeater in June of 1854. In July 1855, Smith & Wesson and Palmer formed the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company in order to manufacture a line of lever action carbines and pistols. Volcanic continued to improve the Rocket Ball type ammunition and the lever action guns that fired it.

As an investor in Volcanic, Oliver F. Winchester was elected a director of the company in 1855 and in the coming years played a pivotal role the evolution of the lever action firearm. In 1856 Volcanic became insolvent with the bankrupt firm’s assets being purchased by Oliver Winchester who soon reorganized it as the New Haven Arms Company. Under Winchester’s leadership, New Haven took a strong interest in developing new types of cartridges for leaver action firearm. As an employee of New Haven, Benjamin Henry perfected the self-contained metallic rimfire cartridge.

The .44 Henry, as it was known, was much larger and more powerful cartridge to be used in lever action arms. Under Henry’s supervision, a new rifle loosely designed on the Volcanic repeaters was manufactured to accept the new .44 Henry cartridge. The result was the Henry Rifle of 1860 and the success of the rifle established New Haven in the lever action repeater firearms market. In May 1866, the New Haven Arms Company was renamed Winchester Repeating rifle Company. Continuing on its success with the Henry Rifle, Winchester introduced the Model 1866, Model 1873, and Model 1876 Lever Action Rifles. Winchester produced some of the earliest repeating rifles that were popular among Western settlers, forever solidifying the Winchester name to “The Gun that Won the West”. This December auction has some of the earliest examples of firearms associated with Winchester heritage. There are several Volcanic Pistols. Serial number 2123 is a deluxe factory engraved New Haven Arms Volcanic No. 2 Navy Pistol fitted with relief carved ivory grips. The two piece ivory grips feature a relief carved Mexican Eagle and Serpent motif inside an oval and the brass receiver has a deluxe scroll engraving with the tight and detailed scrollwork extending the back strap and butt and a small flourish of scrollwork on the underside of the receiver below the cartridge elevator.

The sideplates having oval inscription panels featuring relief engraved borders. If you are looking for a standard New Haven Volcanic No. 2 Navy Pistol, check out serial numbers 2471 and 2026. These are two of the 700 to 1000 No. 2 Navy Pistols that are believed to have been produced by New Haven. Serial number 1470 is a Navy Pistol manufactured by Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, making it one of approximately 1500 Navy Pistol manufactured with an 8” barrel before the company was reorganized as the New Haven Arms Company. Interested in a New Haven Volcanic No. 1 Pistols? This December auction has two: serial number 484 and serial number 1420. Note that serial number 1420 has a 3 ½” barrel and serial number 484 has a 6” barrel. Total production of the No. 1 Pistol with a 3 ½” barrel is estimated at 850 and total production of the No. 1 pistol with a 6” barrel is estimated ate 225.

There are also Volcanic Carbines in the December sale. Serial number 2715 is a factory engraved example featuring large open type scrollwork on the receiver, upper receiver tang and buttplate heel. The engraving is very similar to the engraving on the Volcanic pistol (serial number 1159) pictured on page 9 of R.L. Wilson’s Winchester Engraving. Serial numbers 158 and 10 are examples of the standard New Haven produced Volcanic Carbine. And like the pistols, the carbines are also a scarce historical firearm with approximately 1000 carbines being produced from 1857 to 1860.There are also several examples of Henry Rifles. Serial number 5011 is a factory engraved example with an engraving similar to that pictured in R.L. Wilson’s Winchester Engraving, page 23. The front receiver panels feature large floral designs in double bordered panels with scalloped edges. A hunting dog on point surrounded by open scrollwork is engraved on the left side plate. Scrollwork flourishes are present on the top and sides of the receiver and upper tang. The buttplate heel has a scroll engraving with a star burst on the butt trap. For a standard example of a Henry Rifle see serial numbers 9461 and 2902. Interested in a U.S. contract Hew Haven Arms Henry Rifle? See serial numbers 3526 and 3919.

These two Henry Rifles were part of an 800 rifle order purchased by the Ordnance Department to arm the 1st District of Columbia Cavalry Regiment. The rifles were stamped with the C.G.C. initials of Ordnance Sub-Inspector Charles G. Chapman on the right side of the barrel and script C.G.C. initials on the stock wrist. During the Civil War, the 1st D.C. Cavalry had the distinction of being the only Federal unit to be completely equipped with Henry Rifles.

The inaugural auction of Rock Island Auction Company’s new facility brought firearms enthusiasts of every level, from veteran firearms collectors to first time bidders, all of which were impressed by the massive 86,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art facility.

Every chair (300 now compared to the previous 175) was full as auctioneers Pat Hogan, and his son Kevin took the podium Friday.

Of the endless topics of the pre-auction chatter, the most common subject was the preview hall’s abundant lighting and incredible size and scale. Collectors were able to preview items at their own pace with plenty of room to look down a bore or through a scope without bumping into a buddy. With all the additional interest from the new facility and the impressive collection of firearms up for auction, bidders drove up prices on the over 2,700 lots to a total of over $8 Million, bringing the total for the first two auctions of 2011 to over $10 Million!

Of the over 120 Colt Single Action Army revolvers offered, none were more impressive than an exceptional documented U.S. Lewis Draper inspected Colt Model 1873 single action cavalry revolver which sold above the estimate at $69,000. With more than 400 Colts in the sale many genres stood out with impressive sales such as a fully automatic Colt 1921/28 “Navy” overstamp submachine gun with FBI type carrying case, two drum and three stick magazines and a magnificent Colt 50-95 lightning slide action express rifle in exceptional condition with factory letter each selling for $31,625 respectively.

The most exciting lot was a 1938 Colt Model 1911A1 US Army contract pistol with accessories. The lot saw a flurry of bidders battling over this rare grouping which finally sold at $28,750, almost four times the estimated $5,000-$8,000. Colt long arms were also in high demand with a Colt 50-95 Lightning slide action express rifle with factory letter sold for $31,625.

This auction also featured the finest collection of Sharps to come to auction since the Frank and Karen Sellers collection. This outstanding collection was highlighted by a rare and historic, St. Louis inscribed, factory cased, Sharps Model 1851 sporting rifle which brought $40,250. A very rare documented Sharps Model 1874 No. 1 Creedmoor rifle went well above the estimated price of $8,500-$14,000 and sold for $28,750. A magnificent Sharps panel scene Gustave Young engraved Model 1853 sporting rifle left the building with a final sale price of $25,875, and a custom Sharps Model 1874 sporting rifle by Henry Slotterbek of Los Angeles, California realized $10,350.

Rock Island Auction brought to auction an outstanding collection of Lugers in rare and desirable configurations, as well as other German Military arms, Nazi hats, uniforms and militaria. The highlight of the over 250 lugers was an exceptionally rare documented cased gold plated factory engraved carved ivory stocked Krieghoff presentation Luger pistol which reached a final sale price of $69,000. Other top luger lots were a scarce Borchardt semi-automatic pistol with shoulder stock, holster and spare magazine selling for $25,875 and an exceptional DWM Model 1900 U.S. Army test luger pistol with original Rock Island Arsenal holster with a selling price of $23,000.

Other German Military arms attained high prices including a cased WWII German Luftwaffe issue Model 30 survival drilling with case and accessories which sold for $25,875, and an exceptional Mauser Tankgewehr-18 bolt action single shot anti-tank rifle with bipod which sold for an impressive $31,625.

The over 300 U.S. Military arms were highlighted with an impressive sale at $48,875 of a rare Pedersen device with metal case and U.S. Model 1903 Springfield Mark I rifle, a rare late WWII original inland “T3″ carbine with M2 infrared sniper scope with accessories sold for $23,000, and a rare U.S. trials Colt Model 1907 Army contract semi-automatic pistol with factory letter sold at $14,950.

Sportsmen found something in this auction from the highest quality and condition to the field grade. Of the over 500 sporting arms in this auction a custom engraved gold inlaid Winchester Model 21 two barrel set 28 and 410 gauge Grand American double barrel shotgun with case took top sales at $31,625. Side by side shotguns were in high demand with bidders driving impressive sales of a rare Parker Brothers Model VHE grade 410 double barrel shotgun with Abercrombie & Fitch marked leather case and a cased Balneari signed master engraved gold inlaid two barrel set Piotti Pachmayr extra double barrel shotgun selling at $25,875 and $19,550 respectfully. Sporting rifles did well across the board with impressive numbers which include an engraved gold inlaid pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade bolt action rifle with box in rare 7mm Mauser caliber leading the group with a final sale price of $23,000.

Condition, quality, and diversity made this a must participate for a U.S. early Martial collection including Martial Arms pre and post Civil War. A spectacular Civil War New Haven Arms Co. Henry lever action rifle sold for an impressive $51,750. A rare engraved Spencer sporting rifle brought an impressive $19,550 and a rare Confederate second model Griswold and Gunnison revolver sold after a flurry of bidding for $21,850. Intense bidding drove up prices for early Martial Arms including an exceptional and rare U.S. Springfield Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese rifle selling for $8,050.

Other notable sales from the auction included heightened interest in Kentucky rifles with the sales of a J.J. Henry marked Kentucky flintlock rifle selling for $9,775, a J. Roop flintlock Kentucky rifle and a L. Coon marked flintlock Kentucky rifle each selling for $5,462. An engraved Germanic wheel lock with elaborate relief carved stock sold after a heated battle for $16,100, and an exceptional early 19th Century American Scrimshawed powder horn with patriotic motif brought a notable $6,325. Class III items were also in high demand with aggressive bidding on an original M60 “Fully Active” (New England Group/Maremont) medium machine gun complete with tripod T&E and pintle which finally sold for $40,250.

Moline, IL --(Ammoland.com)- Rock Island Auction’s December 3, 4, & 5 Premiere sale at their facility in Moline, IL proved to be the event of the year realizing sales of $9.7 million.

Their total yearly sales broke a world record topping out at $32 million, which is $10 million MORE than any other firearms auction house.

Once again the auction offered up something for nearly every level of collector. This sale featured more than 2,700 quality lots of outstanding firearms covering many firearm genre’s. The top seller in the auction, a presentation Colt buntline special single action army revolver from the J.A. Hegeman and Stagecoach Museum collection brought applause from the crowd as it realized $368,000. A cased extremely rare Jeffery double barrel rifle in 600 nitro express caliber brought more excitement as it realized $126,500, more than double the high estimate. Other highlights included a rare original Iron Frame Henry Rifle which brought $120,750, and an outstanding 1939 gold plated Mauser Luger presented to the foreign ambassador or the Reich brought $74,750.

This sale also contained one of the most complete U.S. Military collections ever offered by RIAC from the first U.S. Martial pistol through WWII. Exceeding its expectations a final bid of $57,500 won a Historic Civil War 7th Illinois Infantry inscribed Henry lever action rifle. An extraordinary, complete all original WWII Winchester “T3″ Carbine with original First Patten M-2 Infrared Sniper Scope and all the accessories brought a staggering $46,000. The rarest of all semi-automatics, Singer Mfg. Model 1911A1 Serial Number 1 took a high bid of $80,500.

An important section of the U.S. firearms genre was the Martial arms. The Martial arms collection in this auction was the finest RIAC has ever offered, and the prices reflected this. A very rare North & Cheney Model 1799 pistol brought $48,875, and a U.S. Navy Elgin Cutlass pistol brought $31,625. Another interesting part of this collection was a massive, documented U.S. Garrison flag flown at the Lincoln-Douglas debate at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois that commanded $17,250.

A complete history of the Colt firearm was represented with over 500 rare and outstanding conditioned firearms. An exceptional Colt Paterson Belt Model Revolver No. 2 (Fifth Model Ehlers) and Extraordinary Serial Number 1 Colt Open Top 44 both brought $80,500 each. A Documented Colt Model 1900 Sight Safety Navy Contract Automatic realized $23,000. A Colt 1855 20 gauge shotgun Serial Number 2 brought $28,750.

The early antique arms in this sale had several notable sales including a fine pair of Lazarino Cominazzo flintlock pistols that sold for $31,625. Other early arms that commanded attention from the bidders were the Kentucky rifles. An exceptional transitional relief carved Kentucky rifle which brought $28,750 and a rare John Armstrong Golden Age Kentucky rifle realized $25,875.

A nice selection of Foreign Military arms including a Japanese “Grandpa Nambu Pistol Rig” with matching magazine and matching combination wooden shoulder stock/holster exceeded its estimate and brought $28,750.00. An excellent Japanese “Baby Nambu” semi-automatic pistol topped its estimate of $4,750 realizing $7,475.00. German memorabilia; SS Concentration Camp Officer’s Style Peaked Service Cap more than doubled its high estimate when it brought $13,800.00 and a Nazi SS Officer’s Brocade Dress Belt and Belt Buckle surpassed its estimate bringing $12,650.

The evolution of the Winchester was well represented in the auction spanning 100 years of production from the volcanic pistol through to the model 70 bolt action rifle. A fine factory engraved Winchester model 1866 lever action rifle brought $43,125 and a rare new haven arms Henry rifle with Japanese markings realized $46,000. A top bid of $43,125 won an extraordinary factory documented Winchester model 1886 deluxe 50 Express Take Down Lever Action Rifle and an exceptional Model 21 Grand American 28 gauge shotgun garnered $31,625.

The shotgun and sporting rifle prices in this auction were absolutely stunning. A massive G Bates 4 bore double barrel shotgun bringing $31,625 and a Manton 8 gauge slug double rifle realizing $28,750 were but a few highlights. Other notable sales in this genre were a Kreighoff Essencia sidelock shotgun bringing $23,000, and an A.H. Fox HE Grade “Super Fox” side by side shotgun bringing $17,250.

Rock Island’s September auction was advertised as the premiere auction of the year, and this auction has the potential to surpass that spectacular sale.

This auction is a study in the history of firearms production. This auction encompasses the spectrum of collecting from ancient and early antique European arms to substantial collection of modern sporting arms. The collecting favorites of Winchesters and Colts will be well represented with several of the finest known and low serial numbered examples. Rock Island auction is once again proud to present an incredible selection of military items from the U.S. martial era to U.S. and foreign arms from WWI & WWII. Firearms collectors and history enthusiasts alike are sure to find the right piece to fill their collections.

Several museum quality Colts will be sold in December. Center stage will be the finest known condition original presentation Colt Single Action Army Buntline and stock with Hegeman and Stagecoach Museum provenance. This revolver is accompanied by a notorized letter from Osborne Klavestad from the Stagecoach Museum in Shakopee, Minnesota identifying this revolver by serial number as being one of only two Buntline 16″ revolvers that were set aside to be presented to Colt employees and never appeared on the common market. (The other Buntline is on display at the Hartford Library).

The letter goes on to state that the gun was found hidden behind some books in an estate in Hartford. Mr. Klavestad says in the letter “The Colt Buntline is probably the finest specimen in existence today, being mint, original, unfired and complete with stock.” The revolver was presented to Colt’s head librarian (bookkeeper) in 1895, was part of the J.R. Hegeman collection and then went on to the Stagecoach Museum in Minnesota in 1928. It was then purchased by Mr. Stanwick in 1978 when he passed away in 2001, the family maintained his most prized collectible possession until 2010. Now they have decided to offer this national treasure at no reserve to another caretaker-RIA. This spectacular piece with its incredible provenance, condition and rarity carries a pre-sale estimate of $250,000-500,000.

A comprehensive grouping of over 550 Colts will be offered from the early Patersons through WWII semi-autos and slide action rifles. Seven Patersons will be offered starting with 4 longarms, an exceptional Belt Model revolver No. 2 – Fifth Model Ehlers ($75,000-130,000) and a rare Belt Model No. 3 revolver ($40,000-60,000). Another museum worth piece, holding an estimate of $100,000-200,000 is Colt’s first cartridge revolver, an extraordinary first cartridge production Colt Open Top 44 revolver, serial number 1. The quality continues with a rare Massachusetts marked Colt 2nd Model dragoon revolver that is estimated to bring $60,000-90,000. Continuing through Colt production brings fine single actions featuring a historic Ainsworth-Inspected Colt Single Action Army revolver in 7th Cavalry serial number range with holster and a unique antique Colt Bisley with factory documented inscription, pearl grips and ultra-rare box each carrying a $35,000-55,000 estimate. A spectacular pair of consecutively numbered Denise Therion factory master engraved Colt single action army revolvers with relief carved ivory grips leads a nice selection of engraved 2nd/3rd generation SAA’s.

U.S. military is represented from the Revolutionary War to WWII. The best martial arms collection RIAC has ever offered is well represented by an extremely rare North & Cheney U.S. Model 1799 Flintlock pistol – one of only about 20 surviving examples ($50,000-70,000) and an exceptionally rare S. North dueling pistol from the estate of Simeon North ($35,000-55,000). The December auction also holds two rare Martially marked Elgin Cutlass pistols with pre-sale estimates of $16,000-25,000 (only 150 were ever issued). Nearly 50 martial era rifles and muskets will feature an exceptional extremely rare Harpers Ferry Model 1841 Rifle with Merrill breech-loading alteration and a rare early production marked Wickham Model 1816 musket with Gloucester Brigade (New Jersey) markings and history. Other manufacturers include Springfield Armory U.S., Remington Arms, R. Johnson and many more!

A rare piece of history is found in a massive documented historic U.S. Garrison flag that was flown at the Lincoln-Douglass debate at Knox College in Galesburg, IL. The October 7th, 1858 was a part of a series of debates that focused on slavery in the expanding U.S. They set the stage for Lincoln to take up residence in the White House in 1860 and reflected the fierce ideological debates that led to a civil war. The flag measures a massive 12’6” x 20’6” and now has a total of 36 stars, 3 were added after the historic debate.

The outstanding Civil War Arms will provide a nice selection of Confederate Arms including a very rare Confederate J.P. Murray percussion rifle. Over 100 Civil War arms will also include a fine carbines featuring an extremely rare Jenks-Merrill breech loading percussion carbine, one of only 300 produced. A magnificent cased Civil War presentation model 1850 Staff & Field Officer sword with silver figural hilt, inscription which reads “Presented to Capt. Jacob W. Clark/by members of the 59th Regt. N.Y.V.” is expected to fetch $25,000–35,000.

Moving through history brings a nice selection of trapdoors, Krag rifles and Colt early autos from the Indian Wars, Spanish-American War and WWI. Notable examples include an outstanding Springfield Armory Model 1875 U.S. trapdoor officer’s rifle ($25,000–37,500) and rare and desirable U.S. Springfield rod bayonet Model 1903 rifle ($9,000-20,000). An exceptional Colt Model 1902 (Military) Automatic pistol estimated at $11,000–18,000 is just one of the 100 Colt early autos in this auction.

The U.S. WWII items in this sale are amazing including a historic A-2 flight jacket of General Douglas A. MacArthur, a true American hero ($100,000-200,000) and a historical “one-of-a-kind” serial number “1” Singer Mfg. M1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol ($55,000-95,000), one of two Singers in this auction. A magnificent one-of-a-kind “turn-key” display of an all original WWII Winchester “T3” Carbine with original first pattern M-2 infrared sniper scope and accessories carries a $15,000-30,000 estimate. Magnificent Factory Cased and Engraved Volcanic Lever Action Navy Pistol

Moline, IL --(Ammoland.com)- April 30, May 1 & 2, 2010. Rock Island Auction started the year strong with its first premiere sale of 2010 attaining over $7.6 million! Bringing the yearly total over $10 million!

While dazzling stories of shockingly high prices excite many readers, this auction held much that will encourage the majority of firearms collectors. Prices set not by high auction house reserves but competing collectors proved that mid-range items are valuable for firearms collectors.

The main draw of the auction was no surprise, C. W. Slagle’s unique derringers, palm pistols and curio type firearms. Well known in the firearms world as a collector of the unusual, the antique derringer and curio type weapons in this auction drew bidding attention. An extremely rare AM. Sterling marked solid sterling silver Colt second model derringer pistol attained $69,000. Other examples include a large Morrill, Mosman & Blair Elgin patent cutlass pistol, serial number 52 bringing $13,800, and an unusual Sedgley fist gun selling above estimate at $8,625. A cased Femme Fatale pistol ring also hammered above estimate at $5,750

This auction included an extraordinary selection of Winchesters. The top seller of the auction was a magnificent factory cased and engraved Volcanic lever action navy pistol commanding $74,750. An exquisite one of a kind custom engraved gold and nickel plated Winchester model 1873 lever action rifle with carved ivory stock and forearm relief realized $40,250; while $28,750 took home an outstanding rare deluxe special order Winchester 1873 lever action rifle in rare 22 short with a factory mounted Winchester A5 scope. Several outstanding 1866’s were sold including an exceptional Winchester model 1886 lever action rifle with casehardened receiver and factory letter bringing $25,875.

During the three day sale other genres also brought impressive prices. Colts were vastly represented with over 650 in this auction. The high seller was a magnificent Gustave Young factory engraved, J.P. Lower shipped Colt model 1878 sheriff model double action revolver with factory letter that went near the high estimate at $46,000. Other examples are an exceptional Colt Bisley frontier six shooter flattop target revolver with factory letter and a scarce 44 rimfire black powder Colt single action army revolver with factory letter attaining $25,875 and $18,400.

Rock Island Auction proves that it is the auction house for buying and selling all military genres. Beginning with the Civil War, an excellent unissued condition Burnside carbine sold for $9,775 while a rare Confederate Richmond marked percussion carbine with an original sling sold for $8,625. The swords did exceptionally well, featuring an exceptional historical Civil War inscribed presentation 9th Illinois cavalry officer’s saber and a historical high grade 17 Michigan Infantry (Stonewall regiment) inscribed presentation Civil War staff and field officer’s sword both selling above estimate at $9,200 and $8,050 respectively.

Moving on to WWI & WWII brought sniper rifles, edged weapons and semi-automatic pistols. Of the 1911’s and early automatics most sold at or above estimate, the leader being a rare WWII Singer contract U.S. M1911A1 semi-automatic pistol with parkerized finish reaching $34,500. An extremely rare U.S. army first contract Colt model 1900 automatic pistol serial number 93 with holster estimated at $25,000 – 37,500 sold above at $43,125. A rare Savage trial military model 1907 semi-automatic pistol went out at $31,625. An excellent and rare Nazi WWII Luftwaffe model 30 survival drilling with original case and accessories drew bids to $20,700 and rare WWII German “bnz” single claw sniper rifle with Hensoldt scope sold at $8,625. The rare and beautiful military presentation swords featured an inscribed, 2nd pattern, Luftwaffe general officer’s sword which sold for $12,650. This section also included 12 Class III items, $12,650 was paid for a transferable late production U.S. Army contract fully automatic “M2″ inland carbine with ATF registration papers.

An outstanding array of sporting arms boasted a custom order Luciano Bosis over and under shotgun with gold inlay selling at $43,125 while an extremely rare engraved Parker Brothers model AH double barrel box lock shotgun in 28 gauge took $34,500. The sporting rifles in general did well lead by a royal pair of exquisite custom built and engraved, gold inlaid Winchester pre-64 model 70 bolt action rifles owned by prince Abdorreza Pahlavi imperial highness of Iran with a low estimate of $45,000 commanded $51,750. A rare collector’s set of twenty Browning shotguns and rifles that feature the same collector number (00109) prefix in the serial number stole bidding interest garnering $25,875 and a factory engraved Belgium Browning Pointer Grade B25 superposed shotgun with original box reached $10,925.

The April Premiere Auction was a success, combining an impressive sell through rate and sales over $7.6 million. Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- This is a  rare 54-3/8″ wide, 41″ tall oak frame holding a 46-1/4″ wide, 33 1/2″ tall UMC cartridge board.

The lower edge of the frame has a 41 1/2” plaque with scrolls on each end and “THE UNION METALLIC CARTRIDGE CO.” in 2 inch high letters, 3/16 inches thick.

The whole plaque was decorated with gold paint. A smaller (23 1/2 inch) plaque at the top has similar decoration on the end and “TRADE U.M.C. MARK” in rectangular boxes across the center.

A diamond in the center of the board has a painted mountain scene with elk superimposed over the U.M.C. mark. Cartridges include rimfires to .58 Springfield, centerfires to 1 inch Gatling shotgun to 4 gauge in both paper and brass.

There is a box for caps, primers and wads but is empty. The items are replaced with a labeled photograph of the missing items.

Custom Made Smith & Wesson Type Lever-Action Magazine Repeating Pistol

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- This is an expertly made recreation of a Smith & Wesson Volcanic style lever-action pistol.

These type of pistols were the predecessors of the Volcanic and New Haven Arms/Winchester lever action firearms.

This particular pistol has a half-round/half-octagon barrel with front-loading integral magazine. The pistol has an iron frame and loading lever with round finger hole and attached spur.

The two-piece grips are rosewood with flat bottoms and a varnish finish. The barrel has a pinched steel front sight blade. A fixed rear sight is located on the receiver.

The sides of the receiver are decorated with simple scroll engraving and the top of the receiver is engraved with a leaf motif.

The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the legend: “SMITH & WESSON/NORWICH CT./PATENT/CAST STEEL”. The pistol functions fine with slight timing issues.

This pistol is extremely difficult to distinguish from an original example which is almost non-existent (and worth many of tens of thousands of dollars).

Extremely Rare Documented Confederate Augusta Machine Works Percussion Twelve-Notch Style Revolver - $31,625.00

Moline, IL - -(AmmoLand.com)- Rock Island’s December 4, 5& 6 sales tallied, over $7.2 million, ending the year with over $28 million in sales. The diversity of this sale excited a wide range of bidders from all over the world.

The top lot of the auction was an exceptional and very rare New Haven Arms Company volcanic lever action navy pistol with detachable stock selling for $80,500. Another notable lot was a Civil War martially inspected Henry rifle which was won with an above estimate bid of $54,625.

The Civil War arms in this auction were impressive. The selection of Confederate arms demanded bidding interest. Two of the many exceptional pieces were a Rigdon, Ansley & Company percussion revolver and an Augusta Machine Works percussion six-notch style revolver with historic Confederate inscription both drawing above estimate bids of $28,750 each. Other Confederate arms included a navy inspected 2nd Model LeMat percussion revolver selling for $20,700 and a Richmond marked Sharps carbine selling for $19,550.

The impressive offering of Civil War era firearms continued with a cased C.R. Alsop navy model revolver with attachable shoulder stock sold $17,250, and a unique James Warner side hammer revolver reaching $9,775. A Civil War era surgical kit brought an above estimate bid of $7,475.

The grouping of Sharps was also spectacular. An exceptional Sharps-Borchardt model 1878 long range “Panel Side” rifle hammered at $20,700 while a rare Berdan Sharpshooters Sharps new model 1859 rifle attained $12,650.

Over 700 Colt manufactured firearms commanded bidders attention. Two notable lots include a magnificent “RAC” Colt U.S. contract model 1873 and a scarce Colt sheriff’s model which sold for $34,500 & $18,400 respectively. A rare Colt belt model Paterson revolver no. 3 achieved $21,850.

The large selection of Colt long arms as a whole did well. The top seller was a rare cased Colt 1855 first model sporting rifle which brought $20,700. A Colt Model 1855 military percussion revolving rifle with corresponding serialized saber bayonet achieved a near high estimate bid of $11,500.

Another large draw to the auction was the outstanding selection of revolving rifles, shotguns and curio type pistols. This is one of the largest offerings to come to auction with a rarity and quality never before offered. Bidding participation drove prices to $9,200 for a unique European three shot flintlock rifle and $10,350 for a European pinfire revolver cavalry sword with sheath. Above estimate prices were achieved on an engraved “Peanut” style Philadelphia deringer pistol ($8,050) and a cased pair of Remington number one vest pocket pistols with dagger ($5,750).

This unique grouping also held several harmonica pistols, belt model revolvers and turret pistols including a rare documented French 40 shot guycot chain pistol which sold for $12,650. A very rare Daniels turret rifle serial number 9 reached $8,625. A rare documented French Jarre 10-shot double action pinfire harmonica pistol piqued interest fetching $10,925.

Over 200 Winchesters offered a variety for Winchester collectors. An exceptional, deluxe Winchester model 1873 rifle with gold-plated, Ulrich style engraved receiver demanded $37,375, while an excellent special order Winchester model 1886 semi-deluxe lever action rifle with factory letter went above estimate to $25,875.

The 400 plus sporting arms in this auction impressed both the sportsman and collector. Over 200 shotguns were offered including a rare engraved Parker model CHE two barrel set double barrel hammerless shotgun which hammered at $21,850. An excellent cased engraved two barrel set Emil Pachmayr drilling with scope and knife reached an above estimate price of $13,800. What happens after the auction?

On Monday (12/7) after the auction we will not be answering phones, this gives us the opportunity to check our records and begin to contact successful bidders. We will be open for pickup the entire week. Our hours are Monday – Friday 8 am – 5 pm. We will also be open on Saturday, December 12 9:00am – noon for pickup.

How do I know if I am successful?

All bidders will receive an email each night of the auction. It will let you know if you won any items or not for that day’s auction. To view the items won and the amount of the hammer price, and the status of your remaining bids login to your web site account and click the “Current Bids” link in your account tools. (If you do not use your web site account you will be contacted by phone in the days after the auction if you were successful).

Colt Model 1851 Navy 4-screw Revolver with Rare Prototype Pewter Attachable Canteen Stock

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- This Colt 1851, Fourth Model, Navy Revolver with four screw frame and iron backstrap was manufactured in 1862. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with Colt’s New York address. “COLTS/PATENT” is stamped in two lines on the left side of the frame.

The full serial number, “128105″ is visible on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The partial serial number, “8105″ is located on the cylinder and the loading lever. The third pattern, attachable, canteen stock has a pewter body with cast brass yoke. A brass canteen cap screws in the hole on the edge of the stock comb and is retained by a brass chain attached to the upper stock yoke.

The stock does not have any serial number or markings. Colt manufactured attachable canteen/stocks in very limited numbers for the Model 1848 Dragoon, Model 1851 Navy, Model 1860 Army and Model 1861 Navy revolvers. Documents that accompany the revolver indicate that the attachable canteen stocks were received by future Confederate President Jefferson Davis when he served as the U.S. Secretary of War.

Pewter canteen stocks similar to this example have been identified by collectors but are extremely rare.

Condition:
Fine. The revolver retains about 20% of the original blue finish and approximately 30% of the casehardened finish. The barrel, frame and cylinder have scattered pitting and moderate age discoloration.

Markings are clear and strong. Approximately 40% of the cylinder scene is visible. Traces of the silver-plated finish are visible on the trigger guard. The grip has seven notches carved in the right heel, otherwise retains approximately 60% of the “piano” finish. The finish on the upper portions of the grip is heavily scratched from contact with the stock yokes.

The action is tight and functions well. The stock is in very fine condition; the pewter body has an even gray finish and the brass yoke has an even age patina. This is a very rare, attachable third model canteen stock that may be a patent model or experimental piece.

This is a solid Civil War period Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver with four screw frame with a truly unique, possibly one-of-a-kind prototype pewter attachable canteen stock that would be a key piece in any advanced percussion Colt collection. ( See RIA Auction for Exact Condition Details)

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- Colt factory letter dated January 25, 1999 confirms configuration and shipment to Pacific Hardware and Steel Company, San Francisco, California on March 22, 1906, the year of the San Francisco earthquake tragedy!

The features of this Colt are as follows: Blade front sight and frame notch rear sight. Two line block letter address on top of the barrel “(BISLEY MODEL) 38 W.C.F.” on the left side of the barrel and the left side of the frame is marked with the two line, three patent dates followed by the circled Rampant Colt.

The frame and hammer are casehardened and the remaining metal surfaces are blue. Wide low hammer spur and wide trigger with characteristic “humpback” grip. Matching serial number on frame, trigger guard and backstrap and the loading gate is marked with the assembly number “2898″. The left front of the trigger guard is marked with the Colt triangle “VP” proof and the left rear is marked with the number “5″. Fitted with two piece checkered hard rubber grips with the Rampant Colt in an oval at the tops.

Complete with the original maroon hinged lid box numbered to the gun with Bisley picture label and correct factory end labels. Provenance: George S. Lewis Jr. Collection.

Condition:
Excellent. The revolver retains approximately 98% plus of the bright original high polished blue finish with some minor box wear and flaking present on the barrel, a couple of areas of minor pitting on the cylinder and toe of the backstrap, and a few minor dings and handling marks. The frame and hammer retain virtually all of the vivid original case colors.

The grips are excellent plus with only light handling marks and sharp checkering. The markings are sharp and clear. Mechanically excellent. The box is fine with the exception of a corner on the lid, pieces of the labels flaked off around the edges and edge wear on the lid.

The box is remarkably sound. This extraordinary Colt Bisley revolver is rare in that it is one of only a few known with its original picture box and a survivor of the San Francisco earthquake of 1906 in truly exceptional condition.

New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic Lever Action No. 2 Navy Pistol with Ivory Grips

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- Rare, deluxe Volcanic No. 2 Navy Pistol manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co., prior to the Civil War. The deluxe pistol features silver-plated brass receiver that is decorated with bold Germanic scroll engraving on a punch-dot background.

The barrel was originally blue and the hammer and finger lever have a case-hardened finish. The top of the barrel is roll stamped: “REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEWHAVEN CONN. FEB. 14. 1854″ in two lines. The “VOLCANIC” markings which were part of the barrel legend were omitted after Oliver F. Winchester reorganized the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., as the New Haven Arms Co., in April 1857.

The serial number, “1638″ is stamped on the right side of the finger lever and on the inside of both ivory grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. New Haven Arms Company advertisements from February, 1859, list the “No. 2-8-inch Navy Pistol” available “OO-plated and engraved” for $20.00.

The engraving on this pistol is more detailed and better executed than the relatively simple engraving shown on the standard engraved Volcanic revolver illustrated on page 6 of “THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING” by R.L. Wilson.

The combination of detailed scroll and border engraving, silver-plated receiver and ivory grips appears to be nearly identical to the pair of deluxe engraved Volcanic pistols with 8-inch barrels made for Oliver Winchester shown on page 6 of “THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING”.

This pistol almost certainly represents the highest level of engraving, finish and deluxe features available on a New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic pistol. Also, an artist painting of this pistol # 1638 was used for the cover of the 14th annual edition (1960) of Gun Digest by John T. Amber.

Condition:
Very good. The barrel has a very attractive, plum-brown once cleaned (and toned) patina. The markings are fully legible and the barrel edges are sharp. There is some very fine pitting on the left side of the barrel which does not detract from the overall appearance of the pistol.

The hammer and loading lever have a dark age patina with some scattered light pitting. The brass frame retains approximately 20% of the original silver-plated finish which is contained in the protected areas.

The well-executed engraving is crisp and deep. The edges of the receiver side-plates are sharp and straight with almost none of the battering found on side-plates that have been removed. The fine ivory grips have a yellow patina with several minor spots of brown discoloration and several hair-line age cracks on the butt.

The pistol is functional and the action works well. This is a rare, deluxe engraved, New Haven Arms Co., Lever Action No. 2 Navy Pistol.( See RIA Auction for Exact Condition Details)

Exceptional Original Colt, Model 1921/1928 U.S. Navy Over Stamp Thompson Submachine Gun

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- This is just a beautiful example of an exceptional original Colt Auto Ordnance Thompson 1921/1928 US Navy over stamp submachine gun.

This specific submachine gun was original produced in the 1921 configuration, and later, over stamped with “U.S. NAVY MODEL OF 1928″. This model came into being because of the lagging sales for the 1921 series of SMG, and the fact that the USMC successfully used many of these New SMGs in Nicaragua, the Auto Ordnance company began to remark their inventory with the intent of peaking sales interest to various police and Government agencies.

The basic difference between the original 1921 and 1928 configurations is that the latter has a slightly reduced cyclic rate of fire. These Thompson SMGs were probably one of the best machined and hand fitted submachines ever produced.

They all have a distinctive deep rich blue metal finish with the bolt remaining in the white with excellent deep dark brown walnut, foregrip, pistol grip and buttstock. If you ever have a chance to disassemble one of these weapons you will be amazed at how well they were made, the parts just slide together like glass.

This specific weapon still has all the traditional and distinctive Thompson features that are so easily recognizable in the Gangster movies ,WWII, and even up to Vietnam, such as; the Auto Ordnance ported compensator on the end of the barrel, the short 10 1/2 inch barrel with cooling fins, the vertical pistol grip, the detachable buttstock, and the fully adjustable Thompson ladder rear sight that is graduated from 100-600 yards.

The left side of the receiver is marked “U.S. Navy/MODEL OF 1921″ with the ’8′ dated over stamped on ’1′ in 1921, with the serial number 10775 below the marking block. The left rear portion of the receiver is marked: “THOMPSON SUBMACHINE GUN/CALIBER .45 AUTOMATIC COLT CARTRIDGE/MANUFACTURED BY/ COLT’S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO./HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A.” the right side is marked with the five lines of patent dates along with the two line ‘AUTO-ORDNANCE CORPORATION, NEW YORK U.S.A”.

The top of the receiver and is marked with the “Bullet” logo with ‘THOMSPON’ inside. There are no other accessories with specific lot.

Condition:
Excellent with approximately 97% original blue finish showing just some minor wear on the edges and high spots overall, such as the front edges of the compensator, with actual wear on the right side of the receiver, along the lower edge where it meets the lower trigger group, with some minor scratches and handling marks on the left side.

Probably just from sitting in a storage container or display case. All three wood components have a nice medium brown, matching color with just some minor scratches on the right side of the pistol grip, with a few more minor handling marks and light pressure dents on the buttstock. The receiver and frame (lower trigger group assembly) have matching numbers.

Currently most of the internal parts and components all have a coat of old semi-dried preservative grease. Just a exceptional example of a very early ’1928 Navy’ over stamp Thompson submachine gun. This weapon is a fully transferable class III weapon that has the appropriate ATF/Federal Tax stamp. ( See RIA Auction for Exact Condition Details)

Buffalo Bill Cody's Black Powder Colt Single Action Army Revolver

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- This Colt Single Action “Frontier Six Shooter” Revolver and extremely rare factory case was once owned by Buffalo Bill Cody.

The revolver is accompanied by a letter from firearms expert Greg Martin. The letter states that Greg Martin obtained this revolver from Julia Cody’s (William F. Cody’s sister) personal collection of Buffalo Bill artifacts.

The revolver was subsequently sold at auction on March 18, 1988. Also included with the revolver is a Colt factory letter that identifies it as a caliber .44-40 Colt Single Action Army Revolver with blue finish and 7 1/2-inch barrel that was shipped to Hartley & Graham in New York, New York, on October 24, 1882.

The revolver has “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER” acid-etched on left side of the barrel in an oval panel. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the elongated block letter address: “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.” in a single line.

The caliber designation “44″ is stamped on the underside of the barrel in front of the cylinder pin. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt “three dates in three lines” patent markings. “44 CF” is stamped on the left front trigger guard bow. The serial number: “775243″ is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard, backstrap. The partial serial number, “7234″ is stamped on the side of the cylinder. The inside of the loading gate is stamped with the assembly number “1990″. A “B” sub-inspection mark is stamped on the rear face of the cylinder.

The revolver is fitted with a one-piece, varnished grip. The Colt mahogany, American style case is lined with blue felt. The case has three compartments grouped around a central cartridge block drilled for fifty .44-40 W.C.F cartridges.

Condition:
Very good plus. The revolver has traces of original blue with the balance having been lightly cleaned and has a crisp smooth, silver-gray patina. The backstrap has a fine stippled finish, which is contemporary with to the revolver but is not factory work.

The revolver has a hand-made cylinder pin that appears date from the period of use. The backstrap screw is an old replacement. The Martin letter states that the revolver appears to be original with the exception of the cylinder pin and backstrap screw. Grips are good with a small chip on the toe and upper edge at frame and a few minor dings. The faint markings “03/WCP” are stamped on the upper portion of both sides of the grip at the junction of the backstrap and the frame. The significance of these markings is unknown but they may be property or inventory markings associated with the Wild West Show.

The action is tight but the hammer will not hold at half-cock. The case is in good overall condition with a repaired chip above the right hinge and a notch above the key-hole that was apparently used to open the case. The case lining is faded and shows moderate to heavy wear. The lining has compression marks, scattered oil stains and some edge-wear on the case partitions.

This is a solid example of the very desirable 1882 production Colt Frontier Six Shooter revolver with extremely rare Colt Single Action Army factory case that can be traced directly to the sister of one of America’s most famous western figures: Buffalo Bill Cody. Pre-War Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Medallion Pearl Grips

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- This extraordinary factory engraved Colt Single Action Army Revolver was manufactured in 1934.

The revolver is nickel plated fitted with two-piece pearl grips with silver Colt medallions and decorated with Grade “C” factory engraving executed by master engraver Wilbur A. Glahn. The revolver features tight American scroll work on a punch-dot background with floral highlights.

The engraving is very similar to the Grade C engraving on Colt Single Action serial number 356542 illustrated on page 583 of “THE COLT ENGRAVING BOOK, VOL II” by R.L. Wilson (No factory records are available on this vintage of Colt SAA as the factory lost the record book). The top of the revolver barrel is roll-stamped: “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.” in an engraved panel. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped: “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45″ in an engraved panel. The left side of the frame has the Colt two-date in two-line patent makings followed by the Rampant Colt trademark.

The markings are contained in panels created by the engraved scrollwork. The serial number, “355128″ is located in an engraved panel on the bottom of the frame and stamped on the right side of the trigger guard and backstrap underneath the grips. The inside of the loading gate is numbered “5128″. The rear face of the cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number “28″. All of the serial numbers match. The left side of the trigger guard is stamped with the assembler’s number “3″ above the Colt Triangle, “V/P” proof mark. An “F” is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole.

Condition:
Excellent plus. The revolver retains 99% plus of the original nickel-plated finish. The engraving is crisp and deep.

The pearl grips are in excellent condition with a couple of imperfections on the right panel and light handling marks. This is an outstanding example of the highest level of factory engraving offered by Colt executed by one of the best 20th Century firearms engravers.

Prototype, Colt Model 1910 Semi-Automatic Pistol

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- Prototype Colt Model 1910 Semi-Automatic Pistol. Colt manufactured between 12 and 13 of these extremely rare pistols as the direct predecessor in the development of the Model 1911 Automatic Pistol.

The pistol has a high-polish commercial blue finish with casehardened hammer, grip safety and main spring housing. The rear sight, slide lock, trigger, and other small components have a fiery, niter blue finish.

The walnut stocks have rounded tops with fine checkering, small diamonds surrounding the brass screw escutcheons and small stock screws. The pistol has a flat-sided spur hammer with bordered knurling.

The pistol lacks the thumb safety incorporated on the Model 1910 Special Army pistol. The barrel lugs extend completely around the barrel. The pistol is internally serial numbered with “11″ stamped on the top of the frame to the right of the disconnector hole.

The right side of the slide is roll-stamped: “AUTOMATIC COLT/CALIBRE 45 RIMLESS SMOKELESS” in two lines. The left side of the slide is marked with “PATENTED/APR.20.1897.SEPT9.1902.DEC.19.1905″ in two unequal lines followed by “COLT’S PT. F.A.MFG. CO./HARTFORD,CT. U.S.A.” in two lines. (The serial number “11″ is the only marking on the frame internally, near the disconnector slot).

Colt shipping records published on page 234 of “THE GOVERNEMNT MODELS” by William Goddard show that Model of 1911 “Special Army” serial number 10 was shipped “With C.L.F Robinson to London on September 2, 1911 and that serial number 13 was shipped to Colt President Albert Foster Jr. on July 27, 1911.

There are no records for the disposition of serial number 11. The Colt Model 1910 Automatic pistol is a key piece in the evolution of the Colt Model 1911pistol; it established the basic configuration for the successful Model 1911 adopted by the U.S. Army on May 5, 1911 which remained in service for nearly 80 years.

Condition:
Very good. The pistol has been professionally restored to nearly new condition. The restoration includes several components that were newly manufactured to the original specifications.

The pistol retains 98% of the high polish blue finish. Nearly all the casehardened finish is present and the case colors are vivid. The small components have nearly all of the fiery, niter blue, finish. The slide markings are sharp. The professionally made grips are near mint with sharp checkering.

This is an outstanding example of an extremely rare, prototype Colt Model 1910 Automatic pistol that would be the centerpiece of any advanced Colt or automatic pistol collection. ( See RIA Auction for Exact Condition Details)

Colt U.S. Walker Replacement Dragoon Revolver

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- Ultra rare exceptional condition Colt Replacement Dragoon or Pre-First Model Dragoon Revolver manufactured in 1848.

This Colt Dragoon variation was identified by John J. Fluck in the 1950s and is believed to have been manufactured by Colt for the Ordnance Department to replace the Colt Walker Model Revolvers destroyed in service. Colt authorities believe that approximately 300 Replacement Dragoon Revolvers were manufactured in the approximate 2216-2515 serial number range.

The revolver has the unique Replacement Dragoon features that include: (1) long, Walker style, backstrap, (2) modified, Walker Model, trigger guard, (3) cylinder with roll-engraved Ranger and Indian fight scene and distinctive pressure ridge just ahead of the locking notches, (4) small, Walker type, serial numbers, (5) roll-stamped barrel marking: “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY” that reads from the breech to the bore, (6) “COLT’S/PATENT/U.S.” stamped in the middle of the left side of the frame and (7) “P” Ordnance sub-inspection mark stamped on the backstrap, trigger guard, cylinder, left side of the barrel lug and wedge.

The revolver has the Colt military blue finish on the barrel, casehardened loading lever frame and hammer and brass trigger guard and backstrap. The one-piece, walnut, grip has an oil finish. The cylinder has oval stops and lacks the safety pins found on later Colt Dragoon revolvers. The revolver has the early V-shaped mainspring. The full serial number, “2273″ is stamped on the backstrap, trigger guard, frame, barrel lug and the cylinder.

The partial serial number, “273″ is stamped on the inside of the grip and on the cylinder arbor. The loading lever is stamped with the partial serial number “83″. The right side of the grip is stamped with the script “WAT” initials of Ordnance Final Inspector MAJ. William A. Thornton surrounded by an oval border. The left side of the grip is stamped with the Ordnance Sub-inspector’s script initials “NAP” in an oval.

Condition:
Very fine. The barrel retains approximately 70% of the original blue finish with sharp edges and a crisp address on the top flat. The wedge shows traces of the niter blue finish. The loading lever is a period replacement; the loading lever has about 75% of the casehardened finish.

The cylinder has an even, gray-brown patina and retains all of the Ranger and Indian fight scene with strong “MODEL U.S.M.R./COLT’S PATENT”, serial number and sub-inspection marks. The frame and hammer retain 60% plus of the dove-gray casehardened finish with crisp patent markings and serial numbers.

There is some heavy pitting in the hammer well and some very minor pitting on the right side of the hammer and on the edge of the recoil shields. The brass trigger guard and backstrap are in excellent condition with a mellow age patina and scattered age discoloration.

The serial numbers and ordnance inspection marks are crisp. The very fine grip shows moderate handling wear with small chips on the forward edges. The Ordnance Inspector’s and Sub-Inspector’s initials on the lower portion of the grip are sharp. The cylinder does not rotate when the hammer is cocked (this is why the gun is in exceptional condition- it was put up when it broke!).

This is undoubtedly the finest example of an ultra-rare Walker Replacement Dragoon Revolver known. ( See RIA Auction for Exact Condition Details)

Kreighoff Presentation Luger Pistol

Rock Island Auction Company - -(AmmoLand.com)- This is just a fantastic example of a super rare all original Kreighoff Factory engraved presentation luger pistol, that is complete with two matching magazines, take down tool and the original leather presentation case.

These engraved presentation grade Kreighoff lugers all fall into a generally accepted serial number range of 16,000 to 18,000 and as noted this serial is a late production model with several of the same exact type of engraved presentation grade lugers shown on pages 200-213 of “THE KREIGHOFF LUGER” book by the late Randall Gibson.

Any Kreighoff P.08 Luger is highly desirable and very rare on today’s market. Having a Factory Engraved “Presentation Grade” Kreighoff of which there is only a handful known, is undoubtedly the pinnacle of Luger collecting.

The Kreighoff, Waffenfabrik at Suhl, Germany manufactured P.08 Luger pistols for the Luftwaffe from 1935-45 and on special occasion embellished and engraved luger as gifts for several high ranking Nazi party members during the war. This specific luger does not carry any specific named individual, however it is dated on the left side “15.8.39″ (August 15, a few weeks before the Nazi invasion of Poland marking the beginning of World War II) and conforms exactly to those noted in the reference above.

The pistol has been engraved in a very fine and highly detailed large Oak Leaf pattern with extremely fine punch dot back ground shading. The engraving covers approximately 75% plus of the pistol with the only portion of the pistol not engraved is basically around the center section of the barrel.

The grips are the all walnut style as noted in the reference above and which have also been highly carved in a deep relief, large Oak Leaf and Acorn pattern on the top and lower portions of the grip panels with the center section of the grips have a very fine checkered pattern in the middle.

The left side of the barrel extension and underside of the barrel have the single “Crown N” commercial proof and the right side of the barrel extension has the five-pointed star indicating that it was a rejected part, all of which track with other pistols listed in the noted reference book. The top of the chamber is engraved with no date or markings and it has the C-2 type, Kreighoff marking, which consist of a dagger with the rocker on the bottom, flanked by H & K with KREIGHOFF/SUHL underneath.

The left side of the pistol has the correct factory side plate inscription which reads; “HEINRICH KREIGHOFF/WAFFENFABRIK/SUHL/15.8.39″. All of which track with those listed in the referenced book. The luger is complete with two unmarked nickel plated magazines that are only stamped with the serial number (17303) of pistol on the base plate, an original unmarked magazine loading tool and a leather bound presentation case with purple lining. The pistol, two magazines and loading tool all have the Kreighoff factory highly polished platinum finish on all the metal parts.

Condition:
Excellent, with 99% of the totally original factory platinum finish with excellent walnut grips showing no wear at all. The case is in very fine condition showing scuffing on the outside with the leather still nearly all intact.

This is a magnificent example of an extremely rare factory engraved Kreighoff Presentation Luger pistol that is complete with two matching magazines, takedown tool and leather case. ( See RIA Auction for Exact Condition Details)

What you have is a Le Gaulois French Pistol. In 1893 in the “Manufacture de Saint Etienne” catalog appears a curious small repetition pistol sold under the “Machinegun” name. A few years later it will be renamed the “Gaulois” and will remain build till the beginning of World War I.

Invented by Brun-Latrige this gun doesn’t have a trigger as the rear part acts as the repetition and ignition mechanism.

The model displayed there is nickel finish with special grips.

Moline, IL --(AmmoLand.com)-Firearms enthusiasts from all over the world participated in Rock Island Auction Company’s Premiere Firearms Auction on September 11, 12 & 13.

Strong bidding participation drove sales to nearly $8 million as firearms collectors took the opportunity to bid on and own the many museum quality items in this sale. As the value of firearms continue to hold true not only are buyers adding to their collections but ultimately investing in their future.

Once again strong prices were obtained for collectable firearms during a faltering economy with the high bid of $425,500 winning an extraordinary factory engraved, digital “1 of 1000” Winchester model 1873.

This 3 day sale proved highly successful with a 98% sell through rate, pleasing both buyers and sellers.

Several pieces of history were offered, among them were a rare historic and deluxe Tiffany & Co. Smith & Wesson .32 double action 4th model revolver exhibited by the factory at the 1893 “World’s Columbian Exposition” in Chicago commanded a price of $103,500. Another centerpiece of this auction was a magnificent pair of highly embellished exhibition quality Adolph Frohn, Suhl Germany pistols that brought a high bid of $172,500. A magnificent presentation pair of exhibition grade, silver mounted, gold inlaid flintlock T. Dobson pistols made for the Sultan of Turkey sold for $69,000.

An American icon and investing favorite, over 500 Winchesters were offered in the September sell. Lot 1701, a very fine special order Winchester model 1876 deluxe lever action rifle sold for $23,000 while an outstanding Winchester model 1866 lever action rifle hammered above estimate at $25,875. A rare deluxe factory engraved New Haven Arms Co., Volcanic lever action no. 2 navy pistol with ivory grips earned $48,875.

Collectors with interest in the West and cowboy legend had a plethora of items to choose from. This auction offered firearms from the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans museum. The Cowboy star’s fame drove prices, most of the items reaching above the high estimate. Both of the factory engraved Winchester model 21’s presented to Roy Rogers sold within estimate at $46,000 and $43,125. Above estimate prices were attained on a Cole Agee engraved Colt SAA documented as being Roy Rogers “Holster Gun” ($23,000) and an elaborate custom relief engraved and gold-plated Colt SAA ($12,650). A documented historical Audie Murphy presentation to Roy Rogers Colt pre-war/post-war single action army revolver with factory letter garnered a price of $19,550.

The rare and quality derringers was led by a highly embellished exhibition quality factory cased gold inlaid Gaulois palm pistol ($17,250) followed by a factory engraved Southerner Derringer with ivory grips ($13,800). Another amazing piece from this collection was a magnificent relief silver eagle hilted Tiffany made sword from famous Flayderman / Medicus collection realizing $23,000.

Always a collecting desire, the 300 plus Colts in this auction brought strong bids leading with an above estimate bid of $28,750 for a cased custom engraved gold and silver inlaid Colt deluxe SAA by master engravers R.J. Smith & Siegfried Rentzchke. An exceptional black powder Colt frontier six shooter single action etched barrel revolver brought $40,250 and an outstanding Hartley & Graham engraved black powder Colt SAA with factory letter sold for $23,000.

The September auction was a perfect time for many sporting enthusiasts to expand their collection before the hunting season. The sporting arms in this auction featured the E. Warner Bacon Collection. A successful bid of $25,875 took home a scarce engraved and gold inlaid Ithaca Flues model Sousa grade double barrel 16 gauge shotgun with extra barrel. A desirable Winchester model 12 28 gauge skeet grade takedown slide action shotgun garnered $9,200, almost twice the low estimate! An exceptional Holland & Holland .375 H&H Magnum bolt action sporting rifle with scope hammered at $12,650.

The collection of Winchester Model 70’s drew bidding interest to a total of over $300,000. Headlining was an exceptional Pre-64 Winchester transition model 70 bolt action carbine in rare and desirable .35 Remington caliber with factory box (sold $20,700) followed closely by an outstanding Pre-64 transition Winchester model 70 super grade bolt action rifle in rare 250-3000 Savage caliber with factory box (sold $14,950).

Of the over 500 military items in this auction the lugers did exceptionally well. Both a 1899 style Swiss test luger serial number “20″ and an original DWM model 1902 luger carbine with matching stock sold above estimate for $48,875 & $34,500 respectively. Interest was also high in a rare Nazi presentation Walther PPK pistol with NSDAP shooting prize slide inscription, party leader grips and capture documents which secured a $28,750 bid.

Rock Island Auction ventured out of its normal arena of expertise and offered many Victorian era pieces including gambling items, slot machines, vintage advertising signs, ivory canes, spurs, back bar bottles and more. Of the slot machines a scarce character manufacturing company/ mills one arm bandit carved figure nickel slot machine stole the show selling for $7,475. A metal Oshkosh Brewing advertising sign reached $3,737.

As a whole the September auction was a success, with a high sell through rate and sales reaching nearly $8 million. This auction had something for every level of collecting with interested buyers setting the auction prices not a house reserve. The result was satisfied buyers and sellers alike, a valuable goal for any auction house.
