class="wp-caption-text">Redfield

BEAVERTON, Ore. —-(Ammoland.com)- Redfield’s new Revenge line offers an exclusive “in-scope” ballistic ranging system and other premium features at commonly affordable prices for hunters and shooters.

The line includes five riflescope magnifications as well as a scope for crossbow hunting.

Revenge is the second Redfield-branded riflescope from Leupold & Stevens, Inc., joining the popular Revolution introduced in 2010. The new Accu-Ranger Ballistics System is unique to Revenge riflescopes. It allows hunters to determine the distance to commonly hunted animals and helps enhance shooting accuracy at longer ranges —out to 600 yards— without taking eyes off the target. With Accu-Ranger, there is no need to go back and forth between scope and rangefinder when setting up for a shot.

Revenge riflescope magnifications include 2-7x34mm, 3-9x42mm, 3-9x52mm, 4-12x42mm and 6-18x44mm. The Accu-Ranger system is available in all riflescope models except the 2-7x34mm. In addition, the Revenge 2-7x34mm ABS Crossbow scope comes with the Accu-Ranger Crossbow reticle.

“The Redfield Revenge is an all-new, one-of-a-kind series of riflescopes featuring our exclusive new Accu-Ranger Ballistics System,” said Pat Mundy, communications manager for Leupold & Stevens, Inc. “These riflescopes continue the Redfield tradition of top-notch optics priced within the means of most every hunter.”

With Accu-Ranger, the hunter simply uses the riflescope’s power selector ring to bracket the animal’s torso between the horizontal line of the reticle and the bottom of the top post. After determining the yardage from the reticle numbers, the hunter zooms the scope up to its highest power, and then uses the appropriate aiming point to shoot. Specific Accu-Ranger reticles include the Hunter, Sabot, Varmint and Crossbow. Other reticle options for Revenge riflescopes include the 4-Plex and Fine Plex, depending on model.

Additional riflescope features include:

Fully multicoated lens system for outstanding image brightness, clarity and resolution. Performs well in low-light conditions.

Pop-up, resettable ¼-MOA windage and elevation adjustments. Ensures adjustment precision and reliability, and a wide range of adjustment travel.

Fast-focus eyepiece. Makes reticle focus easy to achieve and maintain.

Revenge riflescopes have a one-inch maintube and are nitrogen filled to make them waterproof, fog proof and shock proof. Exhaustive testing in the factory and field ensures the riflescopes’ reliability and durability. They are covered by the Redfield Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Manufacturer’s suggested retail prices range from $139.99 to $269.99. For more information, visit www.redfield.com or call 877-798-9686.

Acquired by Leupold & Stevens, Inc. in 2008, Redfield is now a brand of the Oregon-based company. The Redfield line includes Revolution and Revenge riflescopes, Rebel roof prism and Renegade Porro prism binoculars, Rampage spotting scope kits and Raider rangefinders. The Redfield Gun Sight Company was founded in 1909 by John Hill Redfield. Over the years, Redfield became one of the leading American manufacturers of sports optics, known for the performance, ruggedness and reliability of its products. The new Redfield line upholds that tradition and is sold worldwide to hunters, shooters, wildlife observers and other outdoor enthusiasts.
Tags: Ammoland.com)- Leica’s optical experts have joined forces with G7′s ballistics experts to develop the Integrated Ballistic System (IBS ) reticle.

This multi-purpose reticle allows the hunter to use the ballistic drop reticle or the center aiming point in conjunction with a custom ballistic turret that has been calibrated in yards.

The hold-over aiming points provide the shooter with aim points out to approximately 500 yards, depending on the cartridge and bullet used. The reticle’s windage hash marks assist the shooter in compensating for the wind.

The G-7-powered IBS Ballistic Calculator lets the shooter calculate and print out the distance for each hold-over dot or hash mark for his or her rifle and cartridge. The shooter enters the ballistic information of the cartridge into the calculator, or the factory cartridge specifications are selected; then the user can print a field-carry hold-over chart for that specific load.

A custom ballistic turret, which can be ordered from G7, allows the shooter to adjust the vertical turret to match the distance to the target, then hold right on to complete the shot.

The new IBS System provides shooters with maximum flexibility and ease of use for ultimate in long-range performance, whether using a bullet-drop compensating turret or reticle. The IBS reticle will be available in both Leica’s 2.5-10×42 and 3.5-14×42 ER riflescope models either with or without target turrets (elevation only).

For more info, check out http://us.leica-camera.com/sport_optics/rifle_scopes/Absehen/.
Tags: AmmoLand Gun News

Manasquan, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- Likely to be the first exposure most people had to forensics, the widely televised O.J. Simpson trial not only piqued public interest in criminal investigation, but its popularity also convinced many that this technology was ready for “prime time.”

Today, the growth in amateur fascination with forensics has inspired a variety of dramatic and reality television programs designed to feed this increasing public appetite. The most positive aspect of increased public awareness in forensics is that the laypeople that sit on juries during criminal trials no longer feel like they need to have a criminal justice degree to comprehend the implications and significance of expert testimony and evidence.

The technology used to test blood samples found at the murder scene in the Simpson case, and to identify the DNA of Amanda Knox on the knife used to kill Meredith Kercher have been standard practice in criminal investigation since 1985. However, in the early 1990s, the naissance of bullet cytology introduced advances in the ability to decipher ballistics evidence. By testing tissue cells found on bullets that pass through a body examiners can identify which organs were struck and determine whether a shooting victim’s injury was survivable or fatal, even without the presence of a body.

The determination of bullet trajectory is an important part of crime scene investigation and reconstruction. By measuring the angle of entry of projectiles found lodged in ceilings and walls, forensic examiners can conclude the location of the shooter when they fired the gun. The older method of verifying bullet trajectory is to insert a rod into the hole and the slant by which the rod protrudes from the hole determines angle of entry. The modern technique to determine trajectory employs laser beams, which are more accurate and easier to use over long distances.

Similarly, investigators can also use technology to get a better understanding of whether the bullet ricocheted or not when the shot was fired. Bullet ricochet regards deviation of bullet trajectory following contact with an object. If proven a bullet struck the victim as a consequence of ricochet rather than aim, the shooting is deemed accidental rather than intentional. When bodies are dumped away from crime scenes, particles picked up by bullets and transferred to a victim can tie the murder to a specific location.

During autopsy, the use of entry and exit hole geometry enables forensic medical examiners to ascertain the position of a victim’s body when struck by a bullet. Generally, entry wounds are smaller than exit wounds and increase in size with higher caliber weapons. By comparing entry and exit wounds to gun caliber, investigators can establish the victim’s distance and angle from the shooter when the bullet made impact.

The evolving sciences of bullet cytology and trajectory examination are important forensic techniques through which crime scene investigators can reconstruct a crime. Combined with forensic technology connecting a weapon to a particular person, the results of these tests can serve to confirm or eliminate suspects. However, the most important service offered by forensic evidence is in the trial stage, providing an attorney the capacity to not only prove or disprove witness testimony but to secure convictions for the guilty and exonerate the innocent.

By-line:
Kestrel 4500 NV Pocket Weather Meters, eliminating the need for a PDA.

This compact instrument can fit in a pocket, has auto weather input capability, and still contains all the valuable features of ATrag, including an extensive gun list, customizable targets, and truing.

Why Horus ATrag Ballistics?

With all the different brands of ballistics software on the market, why would Horus Vision’s ATrag be the engine of choice to embed within a Kestrel?

One of the obvious reasons was because of the military contract Horus Vision was granted, outfitting the Army with ATrag as the exclusive ballistics software of choice. If ATrag was trusted for our troops in the field, then ATrag would be a good fit for Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters.

The biggest factor differentiating ATrag from other ballistics software is the truing capability, taking your factual data and modeling an accurate outcome of bullet drop, rather than a predictive one.

What is the benefit?

The two-in-one integration of the Horus Kestrel eliminates the need for a ruggedized PDA (which comes with a number of accessories you would have to lug around, as well) to calculate ballistics in long-range shooting. Since the ballistics software is embedded within the Kestrel unit, environmental data automatically inputs from the Kestrel side to the ATrag side for accurate and instant solutions. It is light-weight, compact, and all it takes to run are two AAA batteries- no chargers, plugs, or over-sized energy sources.

About:
Horus Vision

San Bruno, CA --(Ammoland.com)- This month’s is dedicated to the late William C. Davis, the Master of Ballistics, whose expertise is the reason Horus’ ATrag program is in existence. We owe him a great deal of thanks for all he contributed to the world of long-range shooting.

On March 4, 2010, the renowned ballistician, engineer, and accomplished shooter, William C. Davis died at the age of 88.

Davis graduated from St. Bonaventure University in New York in 1941 with a degree in physics and mathematics. He joined the Army 1n 1942 where he fought in WWII and left his military service after the war in 1946 as a Captain.

Davis went back to St. Bonaventure to teach until 1951, in which he worked as an ordnance engineer for the U.S. government for 23 years. Some notable accomplishments during this time included heavily influencing the improvement of the M-16 rifle and standardization of small arms and ammunition between NATO countries.

In 1972, after many commendations and accomplishments, he retired from his work with the government and became self-employed, consulting and writing, among other tasks in the subjects of firearms, ammunition, and ballistics. He eventually founded Tioga Engineering in 1980, operated by him and his business partner, Charlie Fagg.

Amidst his work within Tioga Engineering, he wrote for American Rifle Magazine, where he became the Contributing Editor in 1974, and went on to write over 50 articles from there. In 1986, he earned the title of Ballistics Editor.

Other Noteworthy endeavors from Davis were the development of Handloading by William C. Davis the Very Low Drag (VLD) bullet, which lead to a win for the U.S. International Shooting Team in the 300-meter competition and writing a majority of the NRA book, Handloading in 1981. He also contributed the “Ammunition” section of the 15th Edition of Encyclopedia Britannica.

Davis is also well-known for writing the first ballistic program for PCs, written in BASIC, which he offered for free to NRA members. He went on to write a total of 14 ballistic software programs. Horus Vision’s ATrag program actually derived from Davis’ algorithms and ballistic studies. You can read A Brief Course in Ballistics for insight on his findings.

On top of his technical expertise, he was also an avid shooter as a military expert in rifle, pistol, and carbine, a Lifetime Master in the NRA Smallbore Rifle and rated as a Class AA in NRA Hunter Pistol Silhouette.

This account of William C. Davis is an understatement of his impact, not only through his insight and accomplishments, but also through his character, as he was described to be respected because of his dedicated, patient, and considerate nature.

To read more about William C. name="allowfullscreen" value="true" />

It started with a question that has fueled countless discussions over the years: does size matter? In this case, the question was posed by James Kasper to Jim Downey, about the optimal length for a self-defense handgun. And from that simple question, to which there are no simple answers, grew a research project. A research project that grew. And grew. And grew. Ending up with weeks of testing, a big pile of spent shell casings, and a website that has become a popular reference source for anyone interested in ballistics.

That website is Ballistics By The Inch, where you can find not only raw data, but charts and graphs, lots of documentation, and hints at the answer to the original question.

James and Jim eventually added in Steve Meyer and then Keith Kimball to their project, starting with thousands of rounds of handgun ammo and custom made 18″ barrels for a Thompson/Center Encore pistol. They established protocols for testing using two chronographs in which three shots of a given ammo for a given caliber were tested at 18″. Once all the ammo was tested at 18″, one inch of barrel was chopped off, and the tests repeated. And so on down to a stub of 2″ barrel.

Fireing the Thompson/Center Encore Pistol - Ballistics By The Inch

The T/C was chosen to provide ‘ideal’ data, across cartridges which may traditionally be used in a revolver or a semi-auto handgun. This would help eliminate such factors as loss due to a revolver’s gap or the operation of a semi-auto ejector. But to make sure that the data collected was relevant, over 40 actual real world guns were also tested using the same ammunition, and those results included on the website.

Stacks of ammo ready for testing - Ballistics By The Inch

One thing which is quickly evident from looking at the data is that the old ‘rule of thumb’ which says that handgun bullets gain about 50 feet per second for each additional inch of barrel length is woefully simplistic. For some calibers, the difference between a 2″ barrel and a 3″ barrel can be almost 400 fps, for others less than 50 fps. Some ammunition maxes out sooner than others in the same caliber. Some calibers continue to gain all the way out to 18″, others level out after only 6″, and some start to lose velocity at about 12″.

The four participants in the test have been pleasantly surprised at the response to their project. Initially launched at Thanksgiving 2008, the site quickly got a lot of attention around the world, and has been cited in discussion forums in at least seven languages. The recent revisions, which included a new round of tests (going from 13 to 16 calibers), has pushed the site to over a million hits. There has clearly been a real need for this information.

And that has been the most rewarding aspect of the whole project for the team members. Jim Kasper, who started it all with a simple question, and was willing to underwrite the bulk of the $20,000 cost of the project, figured that the data has probably been created before by gun and ammo manufacturers, but that the data had always been treated as proprietary. Now it is available free of charge for the average firearms enthusiast to comb through, consider, debate.

More Video:<br
