class="wp-caption-text">U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance

Columbus, OH --(Ammoland.com)- With fall days sweeping across much of North America, it’s the time when hunters everywhere think of two related topics: archery and white-tailed deer.

Generally, archery seasons are a relatively new concept with many being created by state game departments during the 1950s and 60s.

Today, an estimated 9 million Americans participate in archery, and many of those are bowhunters.

Increasing whitetail deer numbers have meant more hunting opportunities—and sometimes more controversy. The deer numbers have grown across America thanks to conservation, wildlife management, and increased interest by hunters and landowners. Hunting areas and seasons have expanded thanks to the work of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and sportsmen nationwide to defend hunting through Congress, the courts and legislatures coast to coast. Today, every state offers an archery hunting season—and with that, many reasons to grab a bow and some arrows, and head afield.

The Basics
Bowhunting is a “back-to-the-basics” adventure. Once you have a bow and arrows, you are nearly ready to go hunting. Most hunters also add sights, a release aid, quiver, silencers, stabilizers, a rest—and other gear to their bow. Others utilize more traditional equipment which is mainly a recurve or longbow with few add-ons.

Additionally, you will need broadheads, practice points, a backstop, and possibly a treestand or blind. To be certain that you have and use the proper arrows for your bow and archery plans, select the proper arrow. More details are at: www.eastonarchery.com/download/selectioncharts. Then, after some practice and refining your proficiency at given distances, you’ll need to turn your attention to hunting areas and the animals you wish to hunt.

Deer motivate approximately 90% of the U.S. hunting market expenditures, and most bowhunters have visions of whitetails and mule deer in their minds. Of course, you can also hunt bear, elk, pronghorns, wild boar, turkeys in some states, and small game species, like squirrels, with your bow. In numerous states, archery licenses are affordable and available over-the-counter.

If you do want to improve your archery skills or learn more about bowhunting, consider joining an archery league, shooting at a 3-D course, or taking a state game department bowhunter education course. Some state’s might offer special youth hunts in case you have a young bowhunter seeking a place to go hunting.

Bowhunting success often comes to those who take the time to learn their bow and gear, the fine details about the animal they hunt, and their personal limitations. As a rule, bowhunting requires that hunters get within 30 to 40 yards of the animal.

The good news is that many bowhunting seasons are open when the weather is warm, fall leaves are colorful, and deer are often on the move in search of acorns and other foods or when they are in mating season. Well-worn game trails can reveal the best places to hang a treestand, place a store purchased blind, or build your own blind, and settle in for your wait.

The Future
While anti-hunting and animal rights organizations have worked to stop or curtail bowhunting mopportunities, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance has worked to protect bowhunting—and expand opportunities. The USSA was the leader in creating the Bowhunting Rights Coalition in 2005 that brought together some of the nation’s premier hunting organizations to defend against anti-archery legislation in several states. In recent times, the Coalition has helped open Sunday bowhunting seasons and other opportunities.

About the USSA:
The U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliances watchdog efforts protect the rights of hunters, anglers and trappers in the courts, legislatures, at the ballot, in Congress, and through many public education programs. The USSA has more than 150,000 registered Sentries that regularly receive information about conservation issues, and then they actively work to promote and protect scientific conservation through calls and contacts. For more information about the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and the Sentry program, call (614) 888-4868 or visit: www.ussportsmen.org.
Tags: Maryland Department of Natural Resources

Annapolis, MD --(Ammoland.com)- On September 16, 2010 at 8:16 pm, the Maryland Natural Resources Police (NRP) responded to a fatal hunting accident that occurred in the 1900 block of Franklin Church Road in Darlington, Md.

NRP’s investigation revealed that Paul Joseph Kemper Jr., 55, of York, Pa. was bow hunting for deer when he fell out of his tree stand which was 25 feet off the ground.

Kemper was located by a hunting companion, Steven Edwin Myers, 54, also of York, Pa. Kemper had an unattached tree stand safety harness near him when he was discovered. Kemper’s body was transport to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy. NRP’s Special Operations Division will continue to investigate accident.

NRP investigated 12 hunting accidents during FY2010 and 14 hunting accidents during FY2009. Tree stand accidents totaled six and seven respectively during those years. NRP urge hunters should read, understand, and practice manufactures recommendations before using any climbing equipment or tree stands. Hunters should always use a full body harness as part of the overall safety restraint system during tree stand use. More information can be found at Victory Archery VAP Arrows

The VAP Series is a special shaft that incorporates Victory’s advanced carbon shaft technology and manufacturing techniques that ensure the highest degree of strength and straightness ideally suited for both the professional and amateur target archer and bowhunter.

World renowned bowhunter Bob Fromme of Performance Archery, San Diego, CA conducted extensive testing on the new VAP Series and had this to say:

“As a hunter and Pro shop owner I am constantly in search of the ultimate bow and arrow set up. There has always been, until the VAP, a trade off between speed, accuracy and penetration.

The Victory Armour Piercing arrow with specially tapered Penetrator broad head / point insert blows material out of the way so the small diameter, thick walled shaft can drive penetration to an unheard of level.”

“I compared a competitor’s high quality carbon arrow weighing 30 grains more than the VAP. I shot field points, a Trophy Taker Shuttle T Lock fixed blade head and the Rage 2 blade expandable into a virgin foam target.

The VAP penetration was over 25% greater. I then shot through 3/4″ plywood and the VAP out penetrated the competition’s carbon arrows by over 20 inches, basically stopping at the vanes. Now with the VAP hunters don’t have to compromise, can shoot a tougher, lighter, faster, more accurate arrow that will out penetrate heavier arrows by a huge margin, even with expandable broadheads”.

VAP arrows feature Victory’s new patent pending, Penetrator Insert that provides a stronger, sleeker fit for both target points and broadheads.

The streamlined Penetrator Insert available in 5/16 and a 9/32 will enable archers to go directly from Gold Medal target/field point accuracy to maximum broadhead performance. The new Penetrator Insert – Easier to work with, increased aerodynamics and broadhead ready.

Victory Archery – Carbon Experts for Over 20 Years

For more information please contact:

Victory Archery – 1914 Palomar Oaks Way – Carlsbad, CA 92008

(760) 496-2121 : www.victoryarchery.com

About:
Ammoland.com)- Big Green Targets, the leading manufacturer of archery targets made from 100% recycled materials introduces its newest line of Pro Series Field Point Bag Targets in four convenient sizes; the Stopper, Kodiak, Polar, and Monster.

Each Big Green Bag Target is uniquely designed with square front, back, top and bottom panels. This produces a larger target face, avoids the pillow look, and more importantly eliminates pass thru’s on the edges of the targets like many other “pillow” type bag targets.

In addition, the target will accept shots while sitting on the ground unlike most bag targets that tend to tip over without additional support. In addition each bag features an all weather polypropylene outer shell with green targets printed on a white surface. While each target is designed to stop blazing fast arrows, they are also built with arrow ease-of-removal in mind to ensure an enjoyable shooting experience.

The “Green” in Big Green Target refers to the company’s commitment to the environment. Each target is produced from 100-percent post-industrial waste that, without being put to good use, would have ended up in a landfill. To top it off, Big Green Targets accepts all used targets for recycling as well, but don’t expect to wear them out any time soon because they are built to last.

The full line of Field Point Bag Targets Includes:

Field Point Stopper

Features grommets for hanging or standing

Measures a full 23 inches tall by 23 inches wide and 14 inches deep (23 x 23 x 13)

Weighs approximately 27 pounds

Replacement bags available

Retails for $54.99

Field Point Kodiak

Huge target that is ideal for hunting camps and long-range shots

Includes deluxe bag with Carrying straps and Velcro close bottom

Measures a full 32 inches tall by 32 inches wide and 14 inches deep (32 x 32 x 14)

Weighs approximately 42 pounds

Replacement bags available

Retails for $119.99

Field Point Polar

Great range or outfitter target

Includes deluxe bag with Carrying straps and Velcro close bottom

Measures a full 36 inches tall by 36 inches wide and 14 inches deep (36 x 36 x 14)

Weighs approximately 55 pounds

Replacement bags available

Retails for $139.99

Big Green Monster

Giant Oversized Bag perfect for ranges and outfitters

Measures a full 48 inches tall by 48 inches wide and 14 inches deep (48 x 48 x 14)

Weighs approximately 120 pounds

Retails for $249.99

Big Green Targets – Good for bowhunters. Available in both 17” and 21” risers, the Dalaa offers a familiar “heart and soul” for traditional shooters, while enticing compound shooters with a versatile and adjustable design. Designed by precision shooter, David Soza, the 3Rivers Dalaa is constructed from the strongest 6061-T6 aircraft aluminum alloy. It also features a unique interchangeable poly grip handle. And it’s available in AMO lengths of 58”, 60” 62”, 64” and 66”.

And now, just in time for the upcoming hunting season, 3Rivers Archery has added several new features. These upgrades expand on the Dalaa’s assets of versatility, performance, and affordability.

The first improvement is a special combination of foam, carbon, and fiberglass that gives the Dalaa its first set of foam core limbs. Made exactly to DAS bows’ strict specs, the new foam core limbs increase arrow speeds and are harder hitting than with previous limbs. Temperature does not have the same effect on foam as it does on wood. This is great news for those who travel to hunt. The limbs will perform at the top of their game no matter where you are in the world. The new foam core limbs are not film dipped or coated in order to leave the natural look of the black fiberglass on the front and back and a grayish-white strip of foam down the sides.

Our second improvement increases the Dalaa’s versatility with new AMO Bushings on the 17” riser. Previously only available by adding a DAS bracket, the 17” Dalaa riser is now tapped with AMO bushings to allow archers and bowhunters greater options for installing quivers, bow fishing gear, sights, and more.

To top it off, 3Rivers Archery is offering a Six Months Same As Cash “$250 Delivers” payment plan. This plan is defined by a $250 down payment followed by six equal monthly payments starting 30 days after shipping/pick-up date.

3Rivers Archery is so confident that traditional and compound shooters alike will love the Dalaa, that we back it with our 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. Test-drive the Dalaa, and if in 30 days you are not 100% satisfied, you can return the bow in like-new condition for a full refund.

3Rivers Archery is the World’s largest supplier of traditional and primitive archery equipment. With a 12,000 sq. ft. warehouse located in Ashley, Indiana and 25 employees, 3Rivers Archery is dedicated to being the best resource for the distribution of traditional archery equipment to our customers while providing for the economic and social well being of our employees and company.

3Rivers Archery also owns the rights or has exclusive rights to Tomahawk Bows, Woodsman Broadheads, Tred Barta Gear and many more quality products. TRENTON, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- Request Gov Christie Sign the 150′ Permiter Bowhunting Bill into law – it’s easy! We need your help on moving forward with the 150′ Bow Perimeter Bill Take Action!
Urge Governor Christie to sign these bills now
We all have worked very hard to advance a bill that will help to improve forest health, reduce deer/car collisions, minimize the spread of Lyme disease, reduce agricultural damage and assist in providing food for hunters, their families and donations of venison to people in need. The bill is the Bow Perimeter change.
New Jersey Outdoor Alliance has spent two years arduously moving the bill through parliamentary procedures with the help of supporting organizations. We have had to maneuver around strategic impediments created by animal extremist organizations, which served to mischaracterize the bill and create hysteria. Opposition to the bill, included NJ Sierra, HSUS and extremist animal rights groups that played on people’s ignorance and prejudices by using inflammatory, false and often misleading statements to deride the bill.
They have made use of a campaign replete with misinformation in an attempt to emotionalize the bow perimeter change by going as far as using small children as props during committee hearings to accentuate safety concerns. They purchased bill boards showing innocent children with arrows aiming at their heads. However, in fact, there is no history of safety incidents associated with bow hunting in NJ. The bow perimeter bill will bring the safety zone within the same parameters, or further, as those being used in the nearby sates of Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
In spite of the malicious and calculated maneuvers, both the senate and assembly asked salient questions and saw the merit of a bill designed to improve the quality of life in New Jersey for both animals and people. Our efforts to educate legislators has now resulted in the Bow Perimeter bill being passed by both houses and is now awaiting Governor Christie’s signature.
It’s time move the bill over the goal line by requesting that the Governor sign bill A1181/A1683. The bill is supported by diverse coalition of conservation organizations including; NJ Audubon, Jersey Coast Angler’s Association, foresters, NJ Farm Bureau, New Jersey Conservation Foundation and more.
Please follow the following link to a prewritten letter at the New Jersey Outdoor Alliance website. We’ve done all of the work for you. Simply fill out your personal information and hit send and you will be asking Governor Christie to sign the bill.

class="wp-caption-text">Ohio Division of Wildlife

COLUMBUS, OH --(Ammoland.com)- An increasing deer population, resulting in negative impacts to native plant communities, has led the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), Division of Natural Areas and Preserves to coordinate special archery deer hunts at 16 state nature preserves across the state.

High quality habitats at these state nature preserves including Blackhand Gorge, Fowler Woods, Goll Woods and Lawrence Woods, have been negatively impacted by over-browsing deer. For example, large flowered trillium — Ohio’s state wildflower — has nearly disappeared from several sites because of foraging deer.

“Conducting special management hunts enables the division to protect native plant communities in Ohio’s best natural areas,” said Gary Obermiller, Division of Natural Areas and Preserves’ program administrator.

“An added benefit is that Ohio’s hunters are given an opportunity to explore high-quality areas and assist ODNR with critical land management activities.”

There will be four (4) two-week archery hunt sessions and one (1) week-long archery hunt session beginning September 25 through November 27, 2010. Each special archery hunt permit will be good for two hunters for two weeks, with the exception of the last one week session. Hunters will be required to harvest an antlerless deer first.

Participating hunters in Zone A will be allowed to harvest two deer under state hunting rules—one on a $15 antlerless tag and one on a $24 either-sex tag. The Zone B limit is two on the antlerless tag and two on the either-sex tag. Similarly, the Zone C limit is six, three on antlerless tag and three on either-sex tag.

To apply for the special archery hunt lotteries, applicants must send in a 3×5 card with their name, address, daytime phone number and the hunt name (such as Goll Woods Archery Hunt), along with a $5 processing fee for each entry. You may apply for multiple sites, however, you will only be drawn once per site.

Please mark each entry card with the appropriate hunt location. Do not send multiple payments—one check equaling $5 per card is sufficient. Do not send cash—checks and money orders must be made out to Ohio Division of Natural Areas and Preserves. Processing fees are non-refundable. Mail entries to the Ohio Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, 2045 Morse Road, Bldg. C-2, Columbus, OH 43229. Lottery entries must be received by August 15, 2010.

The archery drawing will be held on August 16 at 10 a.m. at the ODNR Fountain Square Complex located at 2045 Morse Road, Building E-1 West, Columbus, Ohio 43229. Applicants do not need to be present at the drawing to be awarded a permit.

Successful archery hunt applicants will be notified by phone, and are required to attend one of two orientation meetings set for September 11 and 12 at various locations. Visit ohiodnr.com/dnap for a full listing of lottery rules and special hunt details.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources ensures a balance between wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all. class="wp-caption-text">New Jersey Outdoor Alliance

TRENTON, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- As many of you know, the 150′ Bow Perimeter bill will be heard in the senate committee on Thursday.

This bill is good public policy and sound ecosystem management in that it helps to cull habituated deer. Better access to deer will not only provide food for families but will also help reduce car/deer accidents and improve the health of our forests and landscapes.

NJOA will have two representatives testifying on behalf of the bill. There will be other conservation organizations that will testify for the bill. Currently, there are more animal extremists (antis) than conservationists contacting committee members in an attempt to defeat the bill.

We are not asking that anyone take off from work to attend the committee hearing, we simply ask that you make a phone call to each committee member. Here’s what NJOA Legislative Liaison, Tom Connors, recommends:

A phone call is superior to an email. Five phone calls should take about three minutes. Here’s your script:

Good day. I’d like to leave a message for Senator XYZ. I’d like him/her to support Senate bill S1181, the bow perimeter bill, when it comes up for a committee vote on June 3rd.

You may possibly be asked for your name and phone number.

NOTE: You can decline to give them either and it will not affect the validity of your support of the legislation.

Say Thank You and move onto the next call.

Senator Bob Smith (732) 752-0770

Senator Robert Gordon (201) 703-9779

Senator Jennifer Beck (732) 933-1591

Senator Jim Beach (856) 429-1572

Senator Chris Bateman (908) 526-3600

Thanks to all of you for your support. I highly recommend this beautiful and massive book.” – Fredy Riehl, AMMOLAND SHOOTING SPORTS NEWS

BAREBOW! at Lambson Wildlife Art

Seattle, WA --(AmmoLand.com)- Dennis Dunn, a man who has spent much of his life traipsing through uncharted wilderness, has created what some will say is a literary monument to share his love of the mountains, valleys, waterfalls, free-roaming animals, and companions he has enjoyed during his 40 years of hunting with a bow.

His creation, titled BAREBOW! is a nine-pound, 10 x 15 x 2 inch coffee table book, filled with 30 breathtaking full-page color paintings of wildlife in natural landscapes by noted artist Hayden Lambson, 37 wildlife pencil drawings by his artist son, Dallen Lambson, and 60 photos. The illustrations are interspersed among 104 personal stories of his adventures while bowhunting.

Dennis Dunn is a dedicated bowhunter and conservationist. He produced this book with the goal of sharing his explorations and experiences as well as educating people about the heritage and purposes of hunting.

Barebow hunting is one of the most challenging outdoor pursuits and Dunn holds many hunting records. He was the first archer to take all 29 species of legally huntable big game in North America by barebow, meaning without the aid of sights or other aiming devices.

Each of the 29 chapters in BAREBOW! focuses on a specific species and describes the behavior and habitat of each. There are misadventures and humor as well, and numerous animal sightings where he chose to use his camera rather than his bow.

On May 1, 2010, the Northwest Outdoor Writers Association gave BAREBOW! its First Place Award in the Book Category of their annual Excellence in Craft Competition.

BAREBOW! This book brims with emotion. Besides celebrating trophies, it focuses on the adventure to be found in the wild. It’s a book you’ll show to people who don’t hunt, especially to people who can’t understand why others do.” – Wayne Van Zwoll, PETERSEN’S HUNTING

“This is a book to be read and pondered by anyone who treasures fine writing, holds a deep appreciation for wild places and the animals that inhabit them, or who seeks a full understanding of the special link between predator and prey that bowhunting provides.” – Jim Casada, SPORTING CLASSICS

“Dennis captures America’s wilds like Jack London with the wit and humor of Mark Twain in more than 100 campfire tales. His words transported me into the wilderness of America such that I felt like I, too, had crawled on my belly up onto the back edge of an Alaska mesa to witness the majesty in a band of Dall’s Sheep.” – Liz Madison, THE WOMEN’S OUTDOOR WIRE

“Certainly most non-hunters who are lovers of fine books, fine art and fine storytelling will enjoy this volume immensely! And, for all hunters—firearm or bow—it is definitely a must-read!” – Robert E. Speegle, M.D.

“Readers will experience the drama, suspense, humor, and spirituality that define hunting and wilderness exploration.” – Elizabeth M. Madison, Conservationist

“This book is chock-full of insights into ourselves—as human beings drawn to nature and to the hunt. The gifted and well-qualified author captures the complex, hard-to-describe spiritual connection man has with the natural world in all its beauty and diversity. BAREBOW! offers a rare window: not only to better understand oneself, but also to enjoy the never-ending wonders of nature.” – John J. /> Dead Down Wind is a premium supplier of quality scent prevention products and D2W Guide Gear designed to help outdoor enthusiasts become more successful in the field. Dead Down Wind revolutionized the scent elimination industry through the development of a bio-engineered process known as ESPTM (Enzyme Scent Protection). Through this process a strand of enzymes is created a broad spectrum of odors not just bacteria – the source of human odor. Unlike cover sprays that can only attempt to mask these odors, or carbon clothing that only attempts to contain it., enzymes go well beyond the scope of typical antimicrobials in both effectiveness and the range of odors controlled.
Tags: <a
