Ah, we can hardly wait for Spring. This winter has been brutal all over the country – and as I write this the east coast is gearing up for yet another major winter storm. This has been one of those years the kids are going to tell their grandkids about – “and I had to walk up hill to school and home again uphill all the way, the snow up to my arm pits and the icicles hanging off’n my eye lashes. . . “

So – when Spring finally does come, it is traditionally the time when people get ready for the Summer Shooting Competitions. What this means is the usual “Clean your Gun” specials and “Come to the Range and Shoot off the Winter Blues” packages you put together for your customers will be popular. It is also the time when Sporting Clays and Trap and Skeet Leagues start to gear up. They need “Practice Days” and of course new shotguns and the latest “newest and totally magic” accessories to help them shoot better this season. You’re going to want to have info on and a source for all of these. (You can always check our web site, brownells.com We specialize in the very latest new products – and we have them in stock!) And, in the back room, you’re going to need to be ready for gun re-fitting, stock adjusting and installing the all-important new and different sights on their pistols, rifles, and shotguns.

Ar-15 Introduction Courses
Some new trends and services you should think about for your customers this spring will be AR-15 introduction/re-introduction courses, and accessorizing these marvelous new shooting platforms. With all the AR-15’s that were bought over the last 18 months and the .223 ammo that has been selling like hot cakes, you can bet that people shooting their AR-15’s are wanting to improve their scores or their accuracy. Your shops and ranges should be prepared with short courses for the non-traditional shooter as well as having a lot of the commonly used accessories ready to sell. These would include slings, adjustable stocks, magazines, scopes, sights, and rails. Some other nifty things for the AR-15 are the lights and lasers that work so well on them. And you’ve got to let your customers know about all these new services and “goodies” you have for them. So a mail campaign, or local radio ads or phone calls or whatever way you best reach your market. It won’t make a whop worth difference to your bottom line if you don’t tell folks about what you can do for them. Now is not the time to hide your abilities and inventory under a 5-gallon bucket!

Concealed Carry Market
The next trend you need to know about, because there is a lot of national press about it and TV shows and the whole works, is personal protection and the concealed carry market. By now there are a huge number of items for this market from concealable holsters, purse-holsters for women, grips, bobbed hammers, cut-down sights, smaller guns – the whole .380 shooters world – all potentially hot sellers for you.

Along with the concealed carry products are the concealed carry classes. We strongly encourage you to become your local training experts in concealed carry training. There are many certification courses out there, some from the NRA, which will prepare you professionally to be the person and the place to go to get this training. Again, remember to tell people about this new project at your shop.

One last thing to do before the spring rush starts. It is also time to clean the shop…with new shooters coming into the market and into your shop, many of them are going to be used to well-merchandised isles and clean un-cluttered displays. Clean, well-lighted areas. Clean, nicely laid-out restrooms. Used to be your shop could look like a hunt camp, but to grow and prosper in today’s changing market, some of you may really need to get ready for the new customers you want to attract and keep. Just don’t “turn a blind eye” to what the shop really looks like… take a real look at your shop and see what needs to be done.

The whole and ultimate goal for this spring is to get people out pulling the trigger. There are a lot of new shooters in the market – and in your area – with a lot of new firearms that they need to learn how to use correctly and safely. Like any new hobby, the more training they can get, the more proficient they can become and the more they can enjoy what they have learned to do – the much greater the chance there is of keeping them in our industry – and your customer.

Brownells Gunsmith Career Fair – Your Place For Professional Growth

Montezuma, Iowa --(AmmoLand.com)- Shot show 2010 just ended Friday, last week. It was a show of mixed results with 1,023 vendors and 56,000 show attendees.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation says this was the largest show to date, and we certainly had huge crowds at both our Law Enforcement and Gunsmithing booths with people 2 to 3 deep most of the show. We especially want to thank everyone that stopped by to say Hello. I only wish Pete and I had been able to spend more time in the booth meeting and chatting with you.

There was some drama at this year’s show. . . The layout and navigation of this year’s Shot Show held at Sand’s Convention Center, was terribly unorganized and could probably be used as the bench mark for the worst laid out Shot Show ever. I suppose this probably has to do with the Sand’s expo not delivering on their promise for a new convention center when the contracts were signed.

We also had 23 people in the industry arrested on the Shot floor the very first day for some export bribery schemes. The FBI was certainly using something other than the NSSF map to find the bad guys; Pete and I were well into our 2nd day before we could find our booth without a guide using the same map! Then there was the unfortunate circumstance where some high-profile vendors boycotted renting a booth space from NSSF and decided to “backpack” their products to the industry, which means they would put all their products in backpacks and go from booth to booth selling or set up rooms in a near-by hotel for a “off-campus show-and-tell”. Both No-No’s with NSSF.

All the above notwithstanding, the primary mission of all the folks we take along to Shot Show is to get to know our customers and our vendors and the other great people in the industry. From this point of view, we had an enormously successful show!! Here are some of the industry bits of this and that we picked up and would like to pass along to you. (For some wonderful in-depth, detailed reviews of this annual bash, I recommend you go to Jim Shepherd’s website for his “The Shooting Wire”, and check back through the archives for the past couple of weeks. Jim’s a great writer with a finely tuned ear who does a great job of “nailing it”!)

The firearms market took a very deep breath after running the 2009 sales marathon, and are a little apprehensive of what 2010 will give us.

Factories, wholesalers and buyers are looking for “Value” this year. Last year it was all about “delivery”. Value does not mean “cheap”. It means how we can all do business better if we work together.

Everybody seems to be focusing on their “Core”.
The most important for all levels of business is to communicate with your customers, spend the time understanding what they are looking for and why. This is the best way you can learn, and you can direct your business to provide the service/product/solution they want and will pay for.

In retrospect, 2009 was the year for deliveries – getting things actually in the hands of the customers. 2010 is going to be the year of “I don’t know what’s next”. With this big mystery staring us in the face, the best way to go into the next 12 months is to focus on communicating with your customers, finding out what they want. And focus on defining what your Core business really is all about, and make it as streamlined and as efficient as possible.

With these two handled well and under tight control, you’ll be able to face – and deal with – whatever comes at you.

Taking turns, all members of the group taught classes at several gunsmithing schools across the country.

You quite literally can now save your shopping cart to any folder you want to and can put any name on that cart you want to.

This makes the possibilities limitless!

For instance, if you’re working on a 1911 for a customer named Bill Jones, you can establish a folder named “1911 Projects”. Within this folder create a saved cart for “Bill Jones”. As Bill’s project continues to grow you just add them to “Bill Jones” saved cart until you are ready to place the order. It makes project management and tracking very easy.

Or, if Bill Jones is a customer who has a lot of guns you make an entire folder for Bill Jones. Then you’d label this particular project, “.45 1911″ and so on as additional items are purchased for Bill Jones’s. If his next project is mounting a scope, you can put the items you bought for that project into the Bill Jones folder, but label this cart “Scope mount on Rem. 700, .243 cal”. Thus keeping all of Bill Jones projects together. Another really great feature of this system is that you can write yourself notes on the project you’re working on and save them for future reference. A fantastic way to keep track of your various jobs and projects.

Because of the complete flexibility of the new system, you can literally set it up any way you like. By the kind of project (rebarrel .45); by the name of the customer (Bill Jones); by the day date, or month date (October 2009); by the items you’ve ordered (Leupold Rings/Bases); etc., etc., etc. It doesn’t matter if you’re left brained or right brained, since you’re doing the labeling and you’ve put the carts into the folders, they are going to be where you think they should be. You just don’t have to conform to any body else’s ideas on filing!

What’s more, for those of you who had “Save(d) Carts” in Brownells’ old website before the upgrade in June to this new one, we have brought all those back in so you can access them and decide how you want to file them.

Brownells.com - -(AmmoLand.com)-We’ve been doing some “reality checks” around here last week, trying to get a handle on how our industry is doing and how we need to prepare for the upcoming year.

As we look back, it would seem that most all of us in the industry have had a fantastic run of business. Our industry has been recognized by shooters, non-shooters and even the economic whiz-kids on Wall Street, as one of the very few bright spots during this economic downturn.

You probably saw it in the huge volume of sales starting right at the election in November, 2008, peaking somewhere around Easter, 2009 and then sliding back closer to the traditional summer slow-down we always see.

In doing our analysis here, we asked ourselves the following three questions and tried to come up with answers. You might want to stop a moment and with a fresh cup of coffee, ask yourself these questions about your business and how you feel about your future.

1. Is this “Obama Gun Sale Bubble” over?
2. Is demand for firearms and ammunition coming down to the standard demand curve for our business?
3. What can we do for the remainder of 2009 and all of 2010 to match or beat those high sales in the “Bubble” months of 2008-09?

We came up with some answers, which I’ll pass along to you, but they really are only our opinions from our viewpoint. Hopefully you will find something in here which will be beneficial to you in your business.

We believe the insane demand level for tactical firearms is over and future demands for these products will come back down to the industry norms. Keep in mind, though, there have been a huge number of non-traditional firearms buyers making purchases of AR-15’s. So there are a lot of customers out there who will still want to accessorize and modify one of the world’s most versatile and popular platforms. Definitely still a market for AR-15 “stuff”, but a much softer one for the basic platform itself.

The conceal carry/home defense market, however, is starting to heat up and right now is the beginning of a “short boom”, not as significant as tactical rifles, but one nonetheless. We don’t know how much leg this market can get under it or how long it might run. It is getting lots of play right now in the gun press, so take a look at how you can get into it modestly and watch it closely.

We strongly believe the reloading and ammo markets are still underserved and have strong growth ahead of them. It will take longer to get these markets back to a norm because the primer shortage. The deep fluctuations/price increases in the metals markets from which most of these ammo components are made – lead, copper, brass has an impact on availability and prices. Our industry’s share of these markets is not even a wrinkle, and we have neither control nor any leverage we can bring into play. We just have to wait for the metals markets to settle out.

Shotgun and hunting markets did not seem to have the favorable run-up as the tactical weapons market. From what we think we see, there might be some returning strength. It looks like reservations for hunts have still to recover. We definitely expect those to slowly come back, but quite possibly not until folks are more comfortable the economy has settled down and a general recovery is underway. Hunts are discretionary, more easily put off.

For net results for 2009, don’t focus too much on beating year-over-year numbers. Our last year was way out of the norm. Instead focus on the year’s sales number. With the history we’ve had, it would actually be acceptable to have a 0% growth year in 2010 – it all depends when your fiscal year ends and where the “Obama Bubble” fell. Sometimes it’s just nice to have survived and to be able to move on!

Shells are held in place with a unique, internal Santoprene™ elastomer rib that securely retains even heavy slug shells during vigorous movement or heavy recoil. Available in sidemount (SM) or Picatinny rail (PR) configurations. All necessary installation hardware, tools, and instructions included.

Remington Sidemount is available in 4-, 6-, and 8-round capacities and uses steel-on-steel, threaded adapters that replace the trigger group pins to anchor the shell holder securely to the receiver. Remington 870 shotguns require a shortened, tactical-style forend to accommodate 6- and 8-round sidemount units. Remington 1100/11-87 require minor forend alterations to fit the 8-round model.

Remington Picatinny is a 6-round model that features an integral Picatinny rail for mounting sights, optics, or other accessories. Wraps around the top and mounts to both sides of the receiver using the same type of attaching system as the sidemount model. Fits Remington 1100/11-87 without modification; requires use of shorter than factory length forearm when used with Remington 870.

NRA’s National Police Shooting Championship returns to Albuquerque New Mexico

FAIRFAX, VA – -(AmmoLand.com)- Three of the National Rifle Association’s top Junior Members have been selected to receive the 2009 Outstanding Achievement Youth Award, recognizing their accomplishments in the community, the classroom, and the shooting sports.

Eighteen-year-old Collin Wietfeltd of Hemlock, Michigan, won first place and a $5,000 scholarship. Weitfeltd’s impressive shotgun skills earned him spots on the 2009 U.S. World Championship Shotgun Team, the U.S. National Development Team, and on the 2009 ATA All-American Junior Trapshooting Team.

Wietfeltd recently returned from the Shotgun World Championships, held August 7-16 in Maribor, Slovenia, where he earned a silver medal as a member of the Men’s Junior Trap Team and finished in 7th place as an individual. Earlier this month, Wietfeltd took first place in the Trap Championships at the 2009 Shotgun Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In addition to his shooting skills, Wietfeltd is also very active in his school and community. At Hemlock High School, Wietfeltd is a member of the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA), the CPR Team, and is a regular name on the Honor Roll. Wietfeltd’s community involvement includes being an active member, volunteer, and coach with the Saginaw Field and Stream Club, serving as a coach for the Scholastic Clay Target Program, and as a frequent blood donor, being presented with the Donor For Life Award in 2008. In addition, Wietfeltd has participated in the Michigan State Youth Hunter Education Challenge and NRA Advanced Shotgun Camps.

Wietfeltd will attend Lindenwood University this fall on a partial academic/trapshooting scholarship. He will compete as a member of the Trapshooting Team and will major in Chemistry while completing a pre-dental study.

“Reviewing the applications for the 2009 Outstanding Youth Achievement Award made me very proud of all of the candidates, and speaks to the tremendous effect that the shootings sports and NRA programs has on young people. The shooting sports community gives so freely of their time, money, and most importantly their mentorship; not just to these three winners, but to all youth involved in their programs,” said Larry Quandahl, Manager of NRA’s Youth Programs Department.

Second place and a $3,000 scholarship were awarded to eighteen-year-old Tanner Brooks of Walkerton, Indiana. Brooks is a member of the Indiana State Rifle & Pistol Association and had place first in several competitions, including the Indiana State Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) Championships and the National SCTP Skeet Championships. In 2008, Brooks was selected to attend the NRA’s Youth Education Summit (YES) in Washington, D.C., and also traveled to the NRA Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky. In his community, Brooks helped teach children about firearms safety by presenting the Eddie Eagle GunSafe(r) Program to numerous elementary schools.

Samuel Fowler, a seventeen-year old from Orchard Park, New York, took third place and earned a $2,000 scholarship. Fowler is an NRA Life Member, as well as a member of the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association. As a Smallbore Rifle shooter, Fowler has competed in the National Matches at Camp Perry for the past three years and numerous other local, state, and national competitions. In addition to his achievements as a competitive shooter, Fowler is also an exemplary student and has volunteered at a local Friends of NRA dinner.

All NRA Junior Members (or NRA Regular or Life Members under the age of eighteen) who are also current members of a NRA-affiliated club or state association, and have completed one NRA Basic Firearm Training Course are eligible for the award. Applicants must have additionally earned at least one rating through the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program, submit three letters of recommendation, provide a copy of their school transcript, and write a 1,000 word essay entitled, “What the Shooting Sports have Taught Me.”

In addition to these core requirements, applicants must also participate in at least five NRA-sponsored programs. These elective requirements may include, but are not limited to, presenting the Eddie Eagle GunSafe(r) Program, attending the Youth Education Summit, competing in the Youth Hunter Education Challenge, participating in the National Matches at Camp Perry, or attending an NRA Shooting Sports Camp.

Frankly, we’re awfully pleased with this new Big Book . . . seems we keep saying that every year, but they really do get better and better. Give it a look – between the web and the catalog, we’ve tried to make it wondrously easy for you to pick out the items you want and get them on order to you.

Now to something you really need to do… work on your strategic plan. This is a particularly interesting time in our industry. We all know and acknowledge that the boom we are seeing is a classic “bubble”, with prices driven up on particular guns or shooting platforms and ammunition caused by shortages. These are real shortages, but the manufactures at all levels, from raw goods through gun and ammo factories are not making major capital investments in new manufacturing equipment. They too know this bubble will burst and they will be left with excessive capacity for which they have no need, paid for with borrowed money. No cash stream from the expenditure, but still have to pay for the equipment. Frankly, to stay in business in the long view, these folks have to look at their world this way.

So where does all this turmoil find you? Have you gotten your business strategic plan in place? Obviously the factories do. But do you know what you’re going to be doing after the inevitable bursting of the bubble? You really need to stop and take a good look at your business’s future and your personal future. Preparing for this “future” ahead of time is called your business strategy. It can be overwhelming; for sure it’s going to be challenging to think about, much less create. To help put your mind in the right groove; “Strategy” is defined as “a plan of action to achieve a particular goal.” The word has its roots in the ancient Greek word strategos, which is a military term used to describe the art of a general. Kind of cool, when you think about it! You’ve got to think of yourself as a general as you create and manage the strategy to reach our goals for our business and our life.

To create this strategy for your business, the first thing to do is sit down and make a list of what it is you want to accomplish – what are the most important things to you and how do you want to make them happen? These are your goals. The stuff you’re aiming to have happen. This is not the time to take on the rebuilding of the world order. Start small and take some time to work on your list.

Secondly, you should also think about the things that you don’t want to do or you don’t want to happen. Not going broke is a pretty good goal, for instance. Once you have your do’s and don’ts listed, it becomes much easier to continue to narrow down your initial plan and start adding new exciting ideas, and get rid of the not so good ones.

OK, so here’s the order of things. Write down your goals. “My business is going to Survive” might be one to start with. Then you start on the Strategy to make sure you reach your goal. You really have two simple choices – 1) You can downsize as your market shrinks and work hard to contain costs. 2) You can diversify your product line or service areas and work to bring in customers.

Stretch your thinking. Think carefully about this and write it down. These goals are what you’ll base your strategic plan on. Everything you write down in the strategic plan column should directly correlate to the eventual success of your main goal. For instance, you’ve decided you want to open a gun shop. You have the tools and the skills necessary to do it. That becomes a goal. But, you need to define that goal. What is your goal for the next five years? If you want this to be a full-time job or even a part-time job, then make that your goal.

Part of your strategy for reaching this should be:

1. What will distinguish my work from someone else’s and how do I create a niche for myself?
2. How do I find and get customers through the door?
3. Where should I advertise to find those customers?
4. Are there certain sub-categories of gunsmithing that I’m really good at which my customers are looking for?
5. Also, think about your location. Are you where your customers expect to find your shop? Is it the neighborhood where potential customers will probably be coming on other business and swing by?

Do a lot of leg work and do your research thoroughly – discover what will make you unique and bring value to your customer and make that a highly important part of your overall goal.

Goal setting and Strategy is all about understanding who you are and what you do. It’s who you want to become and it’s your plan for reaching the goals that you’ve set for yourself. Remember however, that it’s also who you don’t want to be. A good goal will direct your strategies, which will then create boundaries around your goals. And with the right goals and the right strategies you can keep yourself completely focused on moving ahead and being successful – which is the goal for all of us!!

The AR-15/M16/M4 Carbine Barrel (#080-000-681) is made of 4140 chrome moly steel, hardened to Rc 26-33 and stress relieved. It’s 16″ long with a 1 in 7 twist and ½”-28 threads for a flash hider. M4 feed ramps provide reliable feeding into the 5.56 NATO chamber. A dark gray, Parkerized finish helps prevent rust.
