Dan Boren (D-OK) along with current Vice-Chairs Rep. Mike Ross (D-AR) and Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL) would allow the firearms and ammunition industry to pay the FAET on a quarterly basis, the same payment schedule as every other industry supporting conservation. Currently firearms and ammunition manufacturers must pay the FAET bi-weekly.

Rifle Caliber / Bullet Twist – -(AmmoLand.com)- The information below will help you select the best barrel twist for your specific needs, providing of course there are multiple choices. If you’ll be shooting one bullet weight, choose a twist from the chart just fast enough to stabilize it. Too fast a twist simply overspins the bullet and may result in reduced accuracy. So if you’re going to be using several bullet weights, be sure to select a twist that will stabilize the heaviest one, since lighter bullets will also be stabilized.

By way of explanation, the numbers in the Twists column indicate how far the bullet must travel through the bore to make one full revolution. This is determined by the rate of rotation of the rifling. For example, a 9″ twist barrel spins the bullet one full turn when it travels 9 inches through the bore. In a 16″ twist barrel, the bullet makes on revolution in 16 inches. So at the same bullet velocity, the 9″ twist is faster (spins the bullet faster) than the 16″ twist. Consequently, as the chart reflects in the .224 CF section, the 9″ twist is necessary for stabilizing heavier bullet weights.

Again looking at the .224 CF section, if you’re planning to shoot 55-grain bullets, the 14″ twist is ideal. This twist is also the best choice for 52-and 53-grain match bullets driven at moderate velocities. But if you’re also contemplating shooting a 60-grainer, go with the 12″ twist, since it will stabilize all the bullets you’ll be using. As you can see from the 15″ and 16″ twists, higher velocities also spin the bullet faster and my enable a slower-than-recommended twist to stabilize a marginally overweight bullet.

Germany – The German firm Brenneke®, long known for their superb shotgun slugs, is now introducing their revolutionary Quik-Shok® Copper Centerfire rifle bullets to U.S. hunters in loaded cartridges.

The Brenneke Quik-Shok Copper bullet is a completely lead-free design, providing a combination of excellent penetration with “controlled fragmentation” that results in a more powerful terminal effect than conventional rifle bullets can produce-regardless of bullet material.

While a conventional rifle bullet expands slowly and progressively during penetration, creating a single wound channel, the Quik-Shok Copper expands very quickly upon contact, then separates into four segments that continue to penetrate deeply. The result is a highly dynamic terminal action that creates expansion far larger than the bullet’s initial caliber, four wound channels versus just one, increased hemorrhage and more primary shock and blood loss than ordinary bullets can generate.

The principles of the Brenneke Quik-Shok Copper have been successfully researched and field-tested for well over 20 years. Traditional lead-based bullet designs are not adequate to create a lead-free projectile with exceptional accuracy, good velocity and fast, humane effectiveness on big game. The Brenneke Quik-Shok Copper’s distinctive design addresses these concerns, the result be ing a projectile with effectiveness that meets or exceeds that of any lead-based construction.

The Brenneke Quik-Shok Copper will initially be offered in 155 grain weights for the .30-06 and the .308. Additional calibers are planned. The .30-06 loading produces 2,953 fps velocity and 3,001 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle, while the .308 generates 2,789 fps and 2,675 ft.lbs. at the muzzle.

Why the dual jacket?

Fiocchi adds 9mm Subsonic To Shooting Dynamics Line

Cactus Tactical - -(AmmoLand.com)- The main difference between rifle powders is shape and chemistry. The shapes of the powder granules make some powder drop better from a powder measure. Chemistry affects the burn rate and is dependent on case dimensions, bore size, and bullet weight. Most powders are designed for a specific range of loads, however some powders are very versatile like IMR 4895. It can be used in everything from a 223 Rem to a 458 Win Mag. Using a powder engineered for your cartridge will result in better accuracy and safer loads. All powder charges listed in a reloading manual for your cartridge and bullet weight have been tested and do not generate excessive chamber pressures.

primers: Any primer will ignite the powder but some powders need a hotter or longer burn to start the powder burning at the proper rate. Example: Win 748 powder requires a Magnum primer for proper ignition. A Standard primer will still make a bang but the results will be inconsistent. Consult your reloading manual for recommended Standard or Magnum primers for the selected powder.

Ammunition manufacturers do a lot of research before they sell a specified cartridge. They find the best velocity, bullet weight, primer and powder that will result in safe, accurate loads. reloading can refine this process and make your rifle shoot better groups. It also adds the versatility of using bullets that may not be available in factory loads. Always try to replicate factory load velocities for the desired bullet weights. Hot loads seldom improve accuracy and accelerate barrel wear. Slower velocities may not spin the bullet fast enough to stabilize it.

Brownell’s Professional Chronograph Xp

Tuning a load: A Chronograph is required. Buy a box of factory ammunition in the desired bullet weight. Chronograph 10 rounds, waiting at least 5 minutes between shots. Document the results; compute the average velocity and variations. Shoot 2- 5 shot groups at 100 yards or more (also 5 minutes between shots). Document the group sizes or save the targets. This will be the base line for your reloads.

Find a load in the reloading manual that replicates the average factory velocity (same weight bullet). Load 10 cartridges, two each in 1-grain increments starting at 2 grains below and going to 2

grains above listed powder charge. Use a Bullet Depth Gauge to measure for proper seating depth. Mark these loads and chronograph them starting with the lowest charge (5 min / shot). After each shot, inspect for flattened primers (high pressure indication). Do not fire heavier loads if you see signs of high pressure. Select the powder charge that replicates the average factory velocity. Load 20 cartridges with the selected charge (weighing each load). Chronograph 10 as before and shoot 2 -5 shot groups as before. Compare factory loads to reloads. Consistent velocities have a better potential for accuracy. If the reload velocities aren’t more consistent, then you need to try a different powder. If velocities are more consistent but group size is larger with reloads, then you have a bullet seating depth or case length problem. Once you see an improvement over factory loads, you can refine by adjusting the powder charge in 2/10-grain increments.

All powders develop higher pressures and velocities when cartridges are placed in a hot chamber. Most guns are more accurate after firing a few rounds to foul the barrel. NEVER mix different powders. NEVER use pistol primers in rifle cases. Anneal the brass case from shoulder to mouth. This softens the brass and allows the bullet to move forward before the pressure builds up resulting in less bullet jump shock, better pressure seal, and better accuracy. Gun Powder Tips for Long Range Shooting

Cactus Tactical - -(AmmoLand.com)- The twist rate of the barrel determines the best bullet weight for your gun and is the single, most important factor for rifle accuracy (see included twist rate chart). The manufacturer cuts the rifling to a twist rate that will stabilize the bullet designed and tested for that cartridge. The smaller the bore diameter, the more difficult it is to stabilize a bullet. Heavy bullets cannot be driven to the same velocities as lighter bullets in the same barrel, so they are also not spinning as fast leaving the muzzle and may not stabilize down range. Bullet spin is a product of twist rate and velocity. A sure sign of a bullet not spinning fast enough is a target with oval or keyhole hits. Using a light bullet in a fast twist rate barrel may cause the bullet to skip across the rifling and literally file itself, thus larger groups. Excess copper residue in the barrel is a clue. Try to duplicate factory loads. They have been extensively tested for best results. Matching the bullet weight to the twist rate and velocity is essential for accuracy. If you need a heavier bullet than your twist rate will handle, you are probably using the wrong rifle.

Bullet parameters: Besides weight, there are five measurements that should be considered when selecting a bullet. Sectional Density: A weight to length ratio measurement. The longer and heavier the bullet, the higher the sectional density thus the deeper it will penetrate. This parameter is not important for target and varmint loads but is very important for game hunting loads. Ballistic Coefficient (BC): The higher the BC, the more aerodynamic the bullet, thus it will drop less at long ranges and will be less affected by cross winds. Due to air density, small diameter bullets such as a .224″ typically have poor BCs. 6mm bullets and larger start getting higher BCs. A BC of .400 is considered very good, .500 and higher is excellent. Balance: All rifle bullets are heavier in the rear than the front and therefore are naturally unstable. The more balanced, the more stable it will be. Bore Surface is the length of the bullet that actually touches the bore. The longer the bore surface, the more it dampens effects from bullet jump shock and the more stable the bullet will be going down the barrel. This parameter is very important for accuracy. Ogive is the point on the nose where the bullet first measures full diameter. This important parameter will dictate bullet seating depth, bullet jump and cartridge overall length. All bullets must be seated at optimum depth for best accuracy. This usually occurs where the ogive is .010″ from the rifled bore.

Conclusion: Analyze before loading. Always stay within the bullet weight intended for your twist rate. Try to select a bullet with the longest bore surface, best balanced, shortest ogive to tip measurement, highest ballistic coefficient, and best sectional density, in that order. A good place to start is a boat tail with a blunt nose or hollow point. Most Reloading Manuals list BC, sectional density, and have pictures of bullets so you can compare important parameters. Don’t skimp on bullets; buy the best quality you can find. Most bullets sold in bulk packs are not uniform weight. Stay with boxes of 100. Best Bullet Weight For Your Gun

Cactus Tactical - -(AmmoLand.com)- The Small Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute (SAAMI) was established to standardize case and chamber specifications. These specifications insure any ammunition produced for a given cartridge will fit and function safely in any firearm chambered for the same cartridge. As with any manufacturing process there are always variations due to tool wear, equipment alignment, and material differences. SAAMI specifications are actually pretty loose, especially for chamber dimensions. All rifle barrels, bar none, have variations in their chambers, even high dollar custom barrels. Even though the barrels are “in SAAMI spec”, the variations can mean the difference of 5 minute of angle (MOA) accuracy with the same ammunition in different guns.

To overcome these variations, shooters have to tailor their own loads. Unfortunately, Reloading Manuals don’t address chamber variations because they too have to follow SAAMI specs with case dimensions, bullet seating depth, and cartridge overall length. By measuring the rifle’s chamber, reloaders can trim brass for best fit and seat bullets at optimum depth. Bullet seating depth and brass length have a profound impact on accuracy. Most chambers are cut with too much “free bore”. This dimension is the distance from the rifled bore to where the shoulder starts. The free bore is at least .025″ larger than the bullet diameter and up to .100″ deeper than needed. As the bullet jumps from the case to the bore, it has room to move laterally resulting in less than perfect bore alignment. This causes the bullet to strike the bore off center and be deformed. As the deformed bullet travels down range, it actually wobbles a little. The greater the wobble, the worse the accuracy. Compensations for chamber variations can be made in the reloading process.

Case Neck Length Gauge.

First, measure the chamber case neck length using a Case Neck Length Gauge. After you measure the case length, trim your brass .005″ shorter than the measurement. This will allow room for the brass to “grow” when fired. Recommended SAAMI trim length is usually way too short for most chambers.

Bullet Depth Gauge

Second, you need to know the exact bullet seating depth to compensate for forward bullet jump. A long established fact: the less the bullet jump, the better the accuracy. Different bullet styles, shapes, and weights, will require different seating depths. Use a Bullet Depth Gauge to determine the exact bullet seating depth for each different bullet type. The bullet should be .010″ from touching the bore. If the bullet touches the bore, chamber pressure may increase.

Once you have worked up a load, use the above techniques to improve accuracy.
