NJ Legislature Supports Police Use of “Extra Lethal “Ammunition
AmmoLand Gun News
Trenton, NJ --(Ammoland.com)- For more than thirty years NJ Firearms Law has all but banned Citizen use, ownership or possession of hollow point type ammunition, but with the obligatory exemption for Military and Police.
It is true that Citizens can in fact buy, and use hollow points under extremely limited and exceptionally narrowly tailored circumstances, but even most cops aren’t aware of them.
Ask nearly any anti-gun politician or spokesperson for an anti-gun group and the inevitable answer justifying the law is predicated on utter ignorance and unsupportable rhetoric. Opponents will invariably exclaim that hollow point bullets are “extra lethal “ and “they are designed solely to cause devastating wounds, inflicting un-necessary pain and trauma“ and they “pose a grave threat “ or other variations of the meme.
Yet there’s that pesky exemption for the Military and Police?
The only conclusion one can reach is that the Legislature approves of and supports the issuance and potential use of these “extra lethal” rounds of ammunition by Police Officers in the performance of their duties, essentially suggesting and overtly approving that it’s perfectly acceptable for an alleged criminal to be shot by a Police Officer with them if the situation calls for it.
This means, it is the stated policy of the NJ Legislature that a person engaged in a criminal act, but not having yet had a trial or having been convicted of such an act in a Court of Law, can suffer “ un-necessary pain and trauma “ and suffer “ devastating wounds “ if an Officer decides to shoot the suspect for whatever reason.
Now, let’s shed the harsh light of scientific facts on the issue.
A hollow point bullet is not designed “solely to cause devastating wounds “ its design and construction is engineered to have the bullet expand on impact with a surface, any surface; including concrete, steel, wood, fabric and yes, flesh. By expanding on impact, the surface area of the bullet increases and causes the kinetic energy stored in the bullet to be dispersed over a greater surface area, that’s it!
Remember I mentioned fabric amongst the list of surfaces that will cause a hollow point to expand when it impacts? What are Police issue Kevlar Bullet Resistant Vests made from? That’s right, fabric. In fact, when Police issue Body Armor is tested by both the manufacturer and the government agency responsible for certifying its effectiveness, it’s tested against hollow point bullets!
Police Body Armor is actually much more likely to be more effective at stopping a hollow point bullet then a “full metal jacket“ type of bullet, which is the height of irony. Because of the Legislature’s incredible ignorance of the subject and their apparent willingness to swallow the baseless lies and fear mongering of Anti gunners..
..they’ve unintentionally created a more potentially deadly situation for those they claim to be trying to protect, Police and innocent Citizens.
I have in my custody an internal Ballistics Test Report from the NJ State Police [...]

By Dan Roberts

They can either admit that if they truly believe that hollow point style ammunition actually is “extra lethal“ and all the other assorted, overheated adjectives they use to describe them, and their approved use against criminals then certainly seems like a clear cut case of “extra judicious“ force.

Or they can simply admit they made a mistake, take responsibility for it and fix it by treating hollow point ammunition just like any other bullet.

More articles, commentary and information by Dan Robert available at Advanced Ballistics Concepts

Denver, CO --(Ammoland.com)- Recognizing that more than 90 percent of shots fired by handguns and hand-held firearms miss their targets, Advanced Ballistics Concepts, LLC (ABC), a ballistics research and development company, today announced the company has invented the first multi-part bullet that immediately unlocks and expands to a predetermined diameter and pattern of spread upon leaving the tip of a rifled barrel.

This new wide envelopment bullet – enhanced with ABC’s patent-pending Triple Threat Technology (T3) – significantly improves a shooter’s hit probability in ultra-close and mid-range engagements because the bullet produces a “spider web”-like effect prior to impact.

T3 bullets are similar to multi-pellet buckshot in that both deliver multiple strike points. However, a T3 round enhances performance because the bullet expands up to 4x faster than buckshot. The bullet design also allows each segment to have a greater mass which in turn produces greater stopping power.

T3 is the first bullet to interconnect three separate segments with Kevlar strings that expand like a spider web to a predetermined diameter and spread pattern that not only dramatically improves the accuracy and hit probability, but does so without disrupting the normal flight path of a spinning bullet. T3 bullets employ a proprietary “accelerated radial spread” that compensates for most, if not all, of typical shooter error.

“According to national law enforcement statistics, more than 90% of shots fired in life and death situations miss their mark,” said Todd Kuchman, Co-Founder and President of ABC.

“Our research shows that these missed shots are the result of ‘last second twitch’ which occurs to some extent whenever a gun is fired, particularly in highly stressful situations. Because every T3 bullet offers a wide shot profile, it compensates for marksman’s error which significantly increases hit probability.”

While improved hit probability is the primary benefit of T3 rounds, safety also played a large role in the design of the technology.

“No one wants to cause collateral damage when discharging a firearm, particularly in the confusion of a threatening situation,” continued Kuchman. “That’s why the T3 bullet is the first to offer SMART-STOP™ technology, a proprietary braking system that can be configured to stop the bullet after hitting a typical household wall or live target.”

ABC is preparing to offer its T3 bullets in three distinct categories: non-lethal (aka: T3 Stinger), semi-lethal (aka: T3 Stunner) and fully-lethal (aka: T3 Stopper) variants. Each variant is optimized for use by the company’s primary target markets: military, police, hunters and personal gun owners. By offering the three variants, ABC supports the blended use of T3 bullets (Smart-Stack) which eliminates the need for additional expensive weapons – such as shotguns – and Tasers that military and police typically have to carry to address varied threats. In addition, all T3 bullets are “backward compatible” to eliminate the need to purchase new firearms.

The company is currently focused on securing partnerships with manufacturers/distributors capable of bringing this innovative ballistic technology to the multi-billion worldwide ammunition/personal defense markets. Organizations interested in working with ABC can contact the company at (970) 396-4136 or visit the company’s website at www.abct3.com

<object

Definitive Accuracy for the 45 ACP.
ASYM's National Match 45 ACP Target Ammunition
ASYM Precision Ammunition
DURANGO, Colo. --(Ammoland.com)- ASYM PRECISION National Match Target ammunition is a match winning, extremely accurate load that tells the shooter just how well their tuned 45 can perform.
Featuring the Nosler 185 grain JHP – a bullet prized among serious bullseye shooters for its gilt-edged accuracy – the National Match Target is a mild shooting target round. Utilizing ASYM match brass, which is custom drawn brass made to ASYM’s specifications, and propelled by premium VihtaVouri powder, the round is loaded to 775 fps, a velocity proven to be a sweet spot in accuracy and function.
“As a custom 1911 maker whose customers expect uncommon accuracy, I looked to the Camp Perry National Matches for the inspiration behind our National Match Target ammunition. We built this round from the ground up using only premium components, assembled on state-of-the-art equipment customized to my own standards and hand-inspected and individually chamber checked as part of a quality control process that insures outstanding performance,” explained Stan Chen, president of Stan Chen Customs and ASYM Ammunition.
The National Match Target is available in a box of 50 or a case of 500 and will run in most 1911s using a stock 16 lbs. spring. For more brisk ejection, springs from 10 to 14 lbs. can be used.
The load is a premium target load and although it uses a JHP projectile, the bullet is not designed to expand at the given velocity. Those looking for a premium defensive load should consider the ASYM SOLID DEFENSE XTM (SDX) load featuring the Barnes solid copper TAC-XP bullet.
“Besides being the definitive accuracy load for competition, the National Match Target is an extremely pleasant load to shoot, especially in extended training sessions,” observed Chen. “So much so that we warn our customers to beware, because this round will make them fall in love with their 45 all over again.”

class="wp-caption-text">Redding Reloading Equipment

Cortland, NY --(AmmoLand.com)- Redding Reloading Equipment has responded to the requirements of Indiana Deer Hunters with the addition of the 358/25 WSSM to their line of regular production “Custom Series” reloading dies.
The new die sets are available as full length sizing , neck size and a three die deluxe set including both full length and neck sizing dies plus a seating die with crimp.

This wildcat cartridge has gained great favor as an alternative to standard handgun calibers under Indiana’s Regulation, allowing the use of cartridges with a bullet diameter of .357 or larger and a maximum case length of 1.625” to be used in rifles during their firearms deer season. It has the ability to be used in both bolt action and modern sporting rifle styles and produces sound terminal ballistics on whitetail deer.

Innovation on the part of the firearms owner has produced many great new cartridges which have over time become standards of our trade. Redding remains committed to supporting such innovation with a true “Custom” die operation, allowing individuals to work at improving their capabilities through wildcatting.

The Engineering Group at Redding requires only a chamber reamer drawing or 5 fired cases from the firearm in question to quote the production of dies for virtually any caliber and firearm which can be made with a 7/8 x 14 TPI die body. Prices are quoted on an individual basis depending upon the complexity of the chambering and any need for tooling.

Those seeking dies for a truly unique or obsolete cartridge should contact the Redding Custom Die Center in the company’s Engineering Department.

Redding offers numerous unique solutions to improve the accuracy, consistency and reliability of your handloaded ammunition. class="wp-caption-text">Winchester Ammunition

East Alton, IL – -(AmmoLand.com)- Considered one of the most innovative products in Winchester Ammunition history, the Supreme Elite Dual Bond bullet line is expanding in 2010, adding .44 Rem-Mag and .45-70 Gov’t to the big-bore hunting lineup.

The .44 Rem-Mag features a 240-grain bullet and the .45-70 Gov’t features a 375-grain bullet. The ‘bullet within a bullet’ design delivers dramatic stopping power and massive tissue damage and is suitable for whitetail deer to large dangerous game, such as bear.

“The Dual Bond bullet is technologically unsurpassed by any bullet commercially available today,” said Brett Flaugher, vice president of domestic and international marketing and sales for Winchester Ammunition. “Anyone who shoots this bullet will experience the best Winchester has to offer in our slug and big-bore hunting lineup.”

The outer jacket is designed for maximum upset and to open up into six segments. The inner jacket works with the bonded lead core and forms another six segments at a controlled rate resulting in a an expansion with 12 segments and is 1.5 times larger than the original bullet diameter.

The heavy outer jacket is mechanically bonded to the inner bullet. The inner bullet utilizes a proprietary bonding process, which welds the lead core to a second jacket that results in a design that provides for a combination of knockdown power, deep penetration and significant tissue damage while retaining nearly 100% of the original weight. The Supreme Elite® Dual Bond® has a large hollow point cavity, which provides positive expansion at a variety of ranges and impact velocities. Combined, this patent pending technology results in lethal energy transfer on impact.

SKU Description Bullet Wt.

*S44RMDB 44 Rem-Mag 240

*S4570DB 45-70 Gov’t. 375

S454DB 454 Casull 260

S460SWDB 460 S&W 260

S500SWDB 500 S&W 375

SSDB12 12 ga. 2-3/4 slug 375

SSDB123 12 ga. 3 in. slug 375

SSDB20 20 ga. 2-3/4 in. slug 260

SSDB203 20 ga. 3 in. slug 260

*New for 2010

For more information about Winchester Ammunition and its complete line of products, visit www.winchester.com.

Winchester Ammunition prides itself in being a leader of conservation
Extreme Shock Ammunition

CLINTWOOD, VA --(AmmoLand.com)- In regards to self-defense with a firearm, you always plan for the worst case scenario. That’s why it’s best to choose a bullet that will put the maximum advantage in your corner. Extreme Shock frangible ammunition is the logical choice.

However, before going into the reasons why, I cannot stress heavily enough on the importance of training. A person who has practiced once a week with a .32ACP will beat a person who carries, but has never fired a .44 Magnum. Whichever firearm you decide to use, you must practice firing hundreds of rounds in realistic scenarios. Marksmanship and Tactics win gunfights. I cannot teach these things in this article, but I can recommend solid ammunition.

The important question to be asked, of course, is: What makes a good self-defense ammunition?

Simply put, the point is not to wound or kill your attacker. The point is to stop him in his tracks from hurting you. This is commonly referred to as either “Stopping Power” or “Knock-Down Power”. This is a bullet’s ability to incapacitate an assailant – the greater the ability, the less chance your attacker will be able to do you harm after he is shot.

Extreme Shock 9mm AFR ammunition in Perma-Gel Bullet fragments to release ALL of it's energy.

Extreme Shock frangible bullets usually expand and stop in the human body, and thus the attacker absorbs all of the bullet’s kinetic energy than if the bullet had merely zipped through him and left two small holes. This is pure “Stopping Power”.

A common concern for people when trying to decide which bullet to choose for self defense is over-penetration inside the home. Extreme Shock’s lead-free, frangible ammunition is designed to transfer ALL (100%) of its kinetic energy into the target thus maximizing your “Knock-Down Power” and stopping the threat.

The Extreme Shock Air Freedom Round (A.F.R.) was designed for use by the US Air Marshalls on board aircraft and is the ideal round for the home defense firearm. The bullet is specifically engineered not to over-penetrate a target. The added benefit of the AFR is that it will not ricochet and thereby reduces the likelihood of incurring secondary casualties.

Extreme Shock also has a proven track record. It has been adopted by various government and law enforcement agencies. When facing an attacker, the reliability of one’s self defense ammunition can be a matter of life or death. Extreme Shock has endured and passed rigorous government testing and certification. Thus you can be assured that Extreme Shock ammunition is reliable.

“But,” you say, “there’s no way it’s THAT important to have a frangible bullet over my favorite lead-core round.” That may be well and true. I know you’re not planning on missing, and that you figure you’ll be able to put a couple of shots center-of-mass with no problems…but.

Do not overestimate your ability when the bullets start flying. There won’t be a perfect Weaver stance involved, trigger discipline will degrade, and carefully aimed shots will be non-existent- due to adrenaline or situation.

So we find ourselves back at the original question; what makes a good self-defense ammunition?

You are safer because your attacker is incapacitated after one or two shots and thus unable to do you injury.

Innocent bystanders and third parties are safer because frangible bullets will not exit the body and go on to injure someone else.

The ricochet danger is eliminated thus reducing secondary casualties stated above.

Furthermore, frangible bullet’s stopping power takes the target down quickly so that they won’t be spraying wild lead core bullets around again endangering uninvolved third parties

This ammunition is reliable. You entrusting your most valuable possession to it’s dependability, your life.

Lastly, use of Extreme Shock will strengthen your defense in court in the ensuing aftermath. Use of Extreme Shock shows that you had concern for the safety of others, used the minimum of force to eliminate the threat ( you didn’t use a magazine of ammo), and reduced your collateral damage.

It is my hope that no one who reads this article ever finds themselves in a situation that warrants the use of a firearm to defend him or herself. But remember, Plan for the worst. Be safe, stay vertical.

Robert Lee Mullins
Extreme Shock Ammunition

CLINTWOOD, VA –-(AmmoLand.com)- Extreme Shock Ammunition, known for producing the world’s most advanced ammunition, has successfully produced the perfect round for Trophy Game Hunting.

Extreme Shock has accomplished what other bullet makers have been trying to do for years–design a hunting bullet that gives 3-4 inches of clean penetration into the animal before fragmenting to release 100% of it’s energy into the soft tissue. The Trophy Game is designed to penetrate through thick hide and dense bone then fragment when it impacts soft organic tissue and fluids.

Unlike other bullets that pass through the game, Trophy Game bullets deliver 100% of their kinetic energy inside the target, making for a safe, fast, and humane harvest with no loss of meat.

The Extreme Shock Trophy Game Hunting line of bullets exhibits superior performance in the target or through the intervening brush. Empirical testing clearly shows that the round nose bullet at moderate velocities travels through brush with minimal deflection. They also tend to follow a straight path inside an animal on their way to the vitals, which is why they are preferred for hunting extremely large game. The Trophy Game bullets are made with controlled expansion features which will work with absolute reliability.

About:
HyperCav Bullets

Cedar Hill, MO - -(AmmoLand.com)-Hypercav (HC) has integrated the worlds’ first “Ported” ammunition. Patent(s) Pending, the design incorporates small ports perpendicular to the base of the hollow point cavity, allowing the air, which normally becomes trapped after contact with the target to escape, allowing the target tissue to immediately fill the cavity causing the bullet to begin expanding just after impact.

Hypercav Hollow Point Bullets

The result is a bullet that is more reliable on expansion over a wider range of in-field conditions.

“Failure to expand (FTE) issues have long plagued the ammunition industry. As effective as HP ammo is, it’s no better than ball ammo if it doesn’t expand. The porting of the HP cavity increases reliability by venting the trapped air, which otherwise would have to be compressed by tissue material to a critical level, thus causing the bullet to begin expansion. During that time, energy is being lost, and many times so much so that the bullet never reaches that “critical mass” moment, and thus no expansion.

It’s a simple matter of physics.” Says ‘They’ (Yes, his real name)- The product designer.

This is a true advance in HP design, and is applicable to literally ALL handgun and rifle HP ammo classes.

Testing and evaluation is ongoing, but to date, results have been very promising. Currently, several manufacturers are looking at this project, and soon, we should see bullets with the new designation; “JHPHC”.

“There are many great bullet designs on the market today. With this simple idea, we can make all ammunition…better.”

Please see website of more information. www.hypercavbullets.com
Tags: The company who brought to life “the Gun that Won the West” is the same company who today continues to supply sportsmen with the best sporting ammunition in the world.

In December, 1980, the company’s board of directors authorized the restructuring of the Winchester Group to allow Olin to better focus more of the company’s resources on Winchester’s sporting and defense ammunition business. With this restructuring, Winchester’s U.S. sporting arms business, which had been part of the company for nearly half a century, was set up as a freestanding operation. In July, 1981, it was sold to the U.S. Repeating Arms Company in New Haven, Connecticut, which now produces Winchester brand rifles and shotguns under license from Olin Corporation.

In 1991, Olin’s Winchester Division again played a part during a war. When the Persian Gulf War broke out, Winchester provided a large amount of the ammunition used by U.S. troops during this conflict.
Tags: Brownells Gun Parts Catalog

Rifle Caliber / Bullet Twist – -(AmmoLand.com)- The information below will help you select the best barrel twist for your specific needs, providing of course there are multiple choices. If you’ll be shooting one bullet weight, choose a twist from the chart just fast enough to stabilize it. Too fast a twist simply overspins the bullet and may result in reduced accuracy. So if you’re going to be using several bullet weights, be sure to select a twist that will stabilize the heaviest one, since lighter bullets will also be stabilized.

By way of explanation, the numbers in the Twists column indicate how far the bullet must travel through the bore to make one full revolution. This is determined by the rate of rotation of the rifling. For example, a 9″ twist barrel spins the bullet one full turn when it travels 9 inches through the bore. In a 16″ twist barrel, the bullet makes on revolution in 16 inches. So at the same bullet velocity, the 9″ twist is faster (spins the bullet faster) than the 16″ twist. Consequently, as the chart reflects in the .224 CF section, the 9″ twist is necessary for stabilizing heavier bullet weights.

Again looking at the .224 CF section, if you’re planning to shoot 55-grain bullets, the 14″ twist is ideal. This twist is also the best choice for 52-and 53-grain match bullets driven at moderate velocities. But if you’re also contemplating shooting a 60-grainer, go with the 12″ twist, since it will stabilize all the bullets you’ll be using. As you can see from the 15″ and 16″ twists, higher velocities also spin the bullet faster and my enable a slower-than-recommended twist to stabilize a marginally overweight bullet.

More Brenneke Ammunition

Germany – The German firm Brenneke®, long known for their superb shotgun slugs, is now introducing their revolutionary Quik-Shok® Copper centerfire rifle bullets to U.S. hunters in loaded cartridges.

The Brenneke Quik-Shok Copper bullet is a completely lead-free design, providing a combination of excellent penetration with “controlled fragmentation” that results in a more powerful terminal effect than conventional rifle bullets can produce-regardless of bullet material.

While a conventional rifle bullet expands slowly and progressively during penetration, creating a single wound channel, the Quik-Shok Copper expands very quickly upon contact, then separates into four segments that continue to penetrate deeply. The result is a highly dynamic terminal action that creates expansion far larger than the bullet’s initial caliber, four wound channels versus just one, increased hemorrhage and more primary shock and blood loss than ordinary bullets can generate.

The principles of the Brenneke Quik-Shok Copper have been successfully researched and field-tested for well over 20 years. Traditional lead-based bullet designs are not adequate to create a lead-free projectile with exceptional accuracy, good velocity and fast, humane effectiveness on big game. The Brenneke Quik-Shok Copper’s distinctive design addresses these concerns, the result be ing a projectile with effectiveness that meets or exceeds that of any lead-based construction.

The Brenneke Quik-Shok Copper will initially be offered in 155 grain weights for the .30-06 and the .308. Additional calibers are planned. The .30-06 loading produces 2,953 fps velocity and 3,001 ft. lbs. of energy at the muzzle, while the .308 generates 2,789 fps and 2,675 ft.lbs. at the muzzle.

While best known in the U.S. for their slugs, Brenneke has manufactured rifle bullets since 1898, and tens of millions of Brenneke bullets have been sold around the world. The firm pioneered many elements of bullet construction taken for granted today, including one of the first boat-tail designs in 1910 (the Brenneke TIG®, or “torpedo tail”), and a sharp cutting edge “wadcutter” bullet in 1930. Both of these designs continue to be manufactured today. The new Quik-Shok Copper is the latest in a long line of projectile innovation that dates back over 100 years.

See the new Quik-Shok Copper at Brenneke’s booth no. 6842 at the SHOT Show 2009.
Tags: Fiocchi’s Extrema .32 Auto XTP

Loaded with the highly acclaimed XTP bullet, Fiocchi chose this bullet for its Extrema .32 Auto cartridge due to this bullet’s three main benefits controlled expansion, terminal penetration and superb accuracy. XTP bullets are famous for their ability to expand reliably across a wide range of velocities and still retain their weight. Special features in the nose facilitate and control expansion upon impact. This unique bullet’s specially engineered cannelure ensures the jacket and bullet core remain locked solid during expansion to retain bullet weight. Further, tests have shown that XTP bullets consistently deliver deep, terminal penetration. Finally, the XTP is widely recognized as one of the most accurate pistol bullets ever made.

A look at the ballistics of this cartridge bears this out. When fired from a 4-inch barrel, Fiocchi’s Extreme .32 Auto XTP 60-grain hollow point races out of the muzzle at 1,000 fps while producing 133 ft./lbs. of energy. At 50 yards, little ground is lost as the little .32 caliber bullet is still zipping along at 926 fps and generating 114 ft./lbs. of energy. Though well beyond self-defense range, at 100 yards velocity is still an impressive 867 fps while its energy is rated at 100 ft./lbs.

For more information on Fiocchi’s Extrema .32 Auto XTP 60-grain hollow point ammunition or Fiocchi’s full line of rifle, pistol, rimfire, shot shell and unique rounds contact: Fiocchi Ammunition, 1662 Nevada Way, Boulder City, Nevada, 89005 702-293-6174 or visit <a

This groundbreaking technology will be introduced for big bore handgun hunting, as well as the shotgun slug product lines.

“Offering the Dual Bond bullet design as both a shotgun sabot slug and big bore handgun bullet sets a new standard in bullet technology,” said Glen Weeks, Winchester Ammunition Centerfire Product Manager. “No other product on the market matches its design or performance characteristics. Dual Bond is clearly one of the most innovative bullet designs in the history of Winchester.”

The bullet within a bullet’ design results in 12 segments which deliver dramatic stopping power and massive tissue damage. The Supreme Elite Dual Bond is suitable for whitetail deer to large dangerous game, such as brown bear.

Why the dual jacket?
The outer jacket is designed for rapid and maximum upset and opens up to six dramatic segments. The inner jacket works with the bonded lead core and forms six additional segments at a controlled rate resulting in a mushroom that is 1.5 times larger than the original bullet diameter.

The heavy outer jacket is mechanically bonded to the inner bullet. The inner bullet utilizes a proprietary bonding process which welds the lead core to a second jacket which results in a design that provides for a combination of knockdown power, solid penetration and significant

tissue damage while retaining nearly 100% of the original weight. The Supreme Elite Dual Bond offers a large hollow point cavity, which provides consistent upsets at a variety of ranges and impact velocities. class="serendipity_imageComment_txt">Cactus Tactical

Cactus Tactical - -(AmmoLand.com)- The main difference between rifle powders is shape and chemistry. The shapes of the powder granules make some powder drop better from a powder measure. Chemistry affects the burn rate and is dependent on case dimensions, bore size, and bullet weight. Most powders are designed for a specific range of loads, however some powders are very versatile like IMR 4895. It can be used in everything from a 223 Rem to a 458 Win Mag. Using a powder engineered for your cartridge will result in better accuracy and safer loads. All powder charges listed in a reloading manual for your cartridge and bullet weight have been tested and do not generate excessive chamber pressures.

Primers: Any primer will ignite the powder but some powders need a hotter or longer burn to start the powder burning at the proper rate. Example: Win 748 powder requires a Magnum primer for proper ignition. A Standard primer will still make a bang but the results will be inconsistent. Consult your reloading manual for recommended Standard or Magnum primers for the selected powder.

Ammunition manufacturers do a lot of research before they sell a specified cartridge. They find the best velocity, bullet weight, primer and powder that will result in safe, accurate loads. Reloading can refine this process and make your rifle shoot better groups. It also adds the versatility of using bullets that may not be available in factory loads. Always try to replicate factory load velocities for the desired bullet weights. Hot loads seldom improve accuracy and accelerate barrel wear. Slower velocities may not spin the bullet fast enough to stabilize it.
<div

Buy a box of factory ammunition in the desired bullet weight. Chronograph 10 rounds, waiting at least 5 minutes between shots. Document the results; compute the average velocity and variations. Shoot 2- 5 shot groups at 100 yards or more (also 5 minutes between shots). Document the group sizes or save the targets. This will be the base line for your reloads.

Find a load in the reloading manual that replicates the average factory velocity (same weight bullet). Load 10 cartridges, two each in 1-grain increments starting at 2 grains below and going to 2
<div

Mark these loads and chronograph them starting with the lowest charge (5 min / shot). After each shot, inspect for flattened primers (high pressure indication). Do not fire heavier loads if you see signs of high pressure. Select the powder charge that replicates the average factory velocity. Load 20 cartridges with the selected charge (weighing each load). Chronograph 10 as before and shoot 2 -5 shot groups as before. Compare factory loads to reloads. Consistent velocities have a better potential for accuracy. If the reload velocities aren’t more consistent, then you need to try a different powder. If velocities are more consistent but group size is larger with reloads, then you have a bullet seating depth or case length problem. Once you see an improvement over factory loads, you can refine by adjusting the powder charge in 2/10-grain increments.

All powders develop higher pressures and velocities when cartridges are placed in a hot chamber. Most guns are more accurate after firing a few rounds to foul the barrel. NEVER mix different powders. NEVER use pistol primers in rifle cases. Anneal the brass case from shoulder to mouth. This softens the brass and allows the bullet to move forward before the pressure builds up resulting in less bullet jump shock, better pressure seal, and better accuracy. Use a <a
